Priyanka is a full time Accounting student at UKZN, and part time model for ICE. While growing up many family members and friends hinted the thought of a modeling career. Not Just a Pretty FaceShakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll was born on February 2, 1977 and has been singing since she was a kid. Sure she’s the queen of wild hair and pelvic thrusts but did you know that she can speak four languages fl uently? The Columbian also likes to help the world, like, a lot. She has founded a charity that cre-ates schools for poor children in Columbia, sung at countless benefi t concerts and is a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. In 2007 she went to Bangladesh to support the victims of Cyclone Sidr and to encourage a call to aid. She visited children and gave out family kits and clothes for three days. We like a celeb that can get down and dirty to save the world, and so did Oxford University when they invited her to give a speech about her work with children. Shakira clearly has a heart too big for her body, and is trying to share it wherever possible. What a woman!

in Jeffreys Bay is a modern restaurant that uses locally grown organic produce

in all their dishes. The menu has a wide range from pizza to sushi and the daily specials make use of the veggies available in season, so they are always the freshest possible. They also have a bar called the ‘Fish Tank’ with a deck and awesome view to sip sundowners on; doesn’t sound too bad, does it?

8 at Spier near Stellenbosch is unique because of its décor. Most of the furniture is made from

recycled materials or reclaimed wood and they have feature lights made from colourful bottles. It also sits next to the Eerste River, so the views are amazing! The food there is made with organic ingredients that they grow on their farm. They try to keep their carbon footprint to a minimum by getting everything they use through local suppliers, so their menu is seasonal and depends on what veggies are available. If you go there for breakfast, you have to try their rolled oats with yoghurt, berries and honey; it’s like heaven on your tongue!

Juicy Luicy is big time eco now and you can see

it in their eco-friendly interiors and the fact that they use non-toxic paint for their walls. They’ve also got a brand spanking new menu that is crying out to be tried. With only natural ingredients used in the meals, the smoothies, open sandwiches and burgers taste oh so good and are healthy to boot. They are eco-fying their stores one by one, so check out the Amanzimtoti one in Gal-leria to get in on the goodness yourself!

Try This At Home

Leaf MobileAutumn is just around the corner, and what better way to reconnect with nature than making use of the leaves in your back yard? This leaf mobile looks awesome and so simple to make!

What you need• leaves• a twig - about 30cm long• thread• scissors

The deed1. Tie a piece of thread around the centre of the twig and suspend from a hook or nail.2. Wrap one end of a length of thread around the stem of one of your leaves a few times, tie in a knot to secure.3. Tie the other end to the twig (making sure the leaf hangs at a length that you’re happy with) and cut off excess thread.4. Continue adding leaves one at a time, tying them onto the twig so it balances and hangs horizontally.

TIP If you want to add some sparkle to your mobile, use some cool beads to thread in before your leaves.

Kiara Worth is a consultant for sus-tainable development specialising in climate change adaptation while using theatre to communicate social messages worldwide. That’s quite a mouthful; basically she’s helping to save the world in her own cool way!

What did you study?I’ve done a Bachelor of Social Sciences ma-joring in Drama, Politics and Rural Develop-ment, an Honours in Agriculture, focusing on the use of theatre in rural development and I have just completed a Masters of Agriculture focusing on Climate Change Communication through Theatre. I have always had a passion for drama and the arts and find that it is one of the most powerful ways of communicating ideas and inspiring social change.

Does your faith have a huge part in what you do?Absolutely. One of the main teachings of the Baha’i Faith is that of the equality of all people and the great need to live in a unified world. I am very grateful that I have had prin-ciples of equality, unity, love and compassion instilled within me for everything that I strive to do.

Tell us more about what you’ve been up to.I have been exploring issues of climate change, particularly adaptation, and how we can respond to it using theatre as a main mode of communication. It started with a community theatre group in Mpophomeni in KZN. We looked at different social issues and how to respond to them, and so a play called

‘Roots of My Hope’ was born. Eventually a short documentary was made and aired on SABC. I then wrote and performed a one-woman show called ‘Theatre of Survival’ at the United Nations for the Commission on Sustainable Development, which had great response – you can see the play on YouTube. From there, I started working with a lo-cal community group in Amaoti discussing climate change adaptation through theatre, and created a play called ‘Fish Out of Water,’ which was performed at International Climate Action Day.

Tell us more about ‘Fish Out Of Water’?We identified a number of key adaptation responses to climate change, which formed part of a greater study for the UN and the eThekwini Municipality. On a more personal note though, I think that the whole process had a huge impact on the people that partici-pated – over a period of several months we got to know each other, battled through our differences, shared in laughter and tears, and ultimately worked together to create some-thing that was of benefit to ourselves and our audience. To go through a process like that teaches you a lot about yourself, the way you view the world and inspires you to do more for the world. To me, this kind of innovative thinking and inspiration is exactly what we need in the world.

How do you manage to do so much good? You know, at the end of the day it really comes down to doing what you can to look after the environment and the people of this world. If it means that you recycle paper, or start a worm farm, or think twice about buy-ing a plastic bag at a shop, then that’s your contribution. I’m lucky to have had the op-portunity to perform at the UN and work with different community groups, but it’s really about all of us doing what we can, where we can, however we can, to make a difference. So just do it! Don’t worry about whether it’s not a big enough initiative or whether it has

great recognition, none of that is important – just commit yourself to making your own personal difference and the impact that it has will be huge.

Best and worst thing about your job?The best thing about my job is the oppor-tunity to travel and learn. I have travelled to so many places because of the work I’m involved in, experienced so many things and interacted with such amazing people – all while doing something constructive and constantly learning more about myself and the world around me. As for the worst part, it certainly is exhausting and there’s always a lot of admin to deal with, but that is a small price to pay for all the wonderful experiences that I’ve had.

Of all the countries you have seen, which one has been your favourite?Tough question – each country I’ve been to has certain magic to it. I must say though that Sudan and Ethiopia are two of the most amazing countries that I’ve been to in Africa. They have a certain quality about them that is totally different from anything I have seen. At the moment I’m in Papua New Guinea and this is also an amazing place – tropical island paradise on the equator – who could ask for anything more!

Tips for readers on how to make a positive difference to the environment?Do what works for you. The biggest contri-bution you can make to the planet is to do something consistently, so whatever it is, no matter how big or how small, make sure that it is sustainable and just keep on doing it. But, on top of that – you need to become

aware of what’s going on around you. Under-stand what’s happening in the world. Educate yourself. Get involved. Make good decisions. And recognise that this planet is for us all to share so commit yourself to doing your part in making it a beautiful place for everyone. Check out Kiara’s blog at african-gypsy.blogspot.com

nitely changed from when they first released “Like You Madly” about 13 years ago. It’s a lot mellower especially with tracks like “Safer” giving you plenty of opportunity to snuggle up next to your boy. Ultimately, although the album grows on you the more you listen to it and there are a few definite hits in there, it doesn’t have much impact and could easily play unnoticed in the background. - SB

TOKIO HOTELHumanoid

What did Bill Kaulitz do with his cha-risma? With his

over-the-top goth-pop vocals — and even more pretty punk hairspray and mascara styl-ing — the 20-year-old singer has made this German band one of Europe’s most popular and irresistible groups. But on Humanoid, he sounds strangely reduced. With the excep-tion of ‘Hey You’ and ‘World Behind My Wall’ the album is melodically dull and strangely low-key. Luckily ‘Automatic’ is catchy enough to stay in our headspace for just a little while longer. But subtle is not a mode that suits Tokio Hotel. - JW

OWL CITYOcean Eyes

When I first heard these guys I thought Postal Service or

Death Cab for Cutie. Owl City’s sound is great for a long drive or just to make you smile. Adam Young’s voice is soothing and easy on the ears. The songs do have a similar sound but the words are just like the sounds of the music - soft and meaningful. Favourites at the moment are “Fireflies” and “The Salt Water Room”. If you’re following them on Twitter, use the link below to download a free Twitter Owl City talking owl. ONE REPUBLICWaking Up

This album is cer-tainly a mish – mash of creativity. Whilst

some critics say that One Republic is losing their spark and that no song on this album comes close to ‘Stop and Stare’ or their former ‘Apologise’, I believe that this move away from the mainstream has definitely led them to produce an incredible album. ‘Wakin Up’ and ‘Marchin’ On’ are tracks that you just have to listen to! - JA

SANDEE’S SANITY: My ramblings & works

Sometimes you don’t always need to get a piece of paper to prove your abilities, and Sandee’s blog is proof of that! She is a mixed media artist with no training in art and yet her blog just explodes with creativity and amazing pieces of art! She creates her artwork through “trial and error and a bit of luck!” I could waste an entire day browsing her blog, there is just so much fun and energy in her stuff, check it out at sandees-sanity.blogspot.com

COP OUT9 AprilComedy Action

Kevin Smith has a knack for directing com-edies, which one can see in ‘Clerks’, ‘Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back’ and ‘Zack and Miri Make a Porno’. But I find myself wonder-ing if ‘Cop Out’ deserves a spot with these greats. Two NYPD cops, Jimmy (Bruce Willis) and Paul (Tracy Morgan) is on the search for Jimmy’s rare baseball card that was stolen and meant to pay for his daughter’s wedding. But Paul is finding it hard to concentrate on the case while he suspects his wife is cheat-ing on him. The two end up coming against a ruthless gangster obsessed with collectibles and things start to get a little interesting. This film is a lot more family friendly than Kevin Smith’s earlier works and the humour a little weak. The cameos from Sean William Scott and Adam Brody sweeten the deal slightly, but you might just want to wait for DVD.

GAIA WARRIORSBy Nicola Dav-iews****If you think you can’t make a real difference to the environment, this book will change

THE GOODE FAMILY, SEASON 1Animation

Another animated series is coming to our screens, this time about an environmentally re-sponsible, although slightly crazy, family struggling with the times and political correctness. From the creators of

‘Beavis and Butthead’ and ‘King of the Hill’, this show is bound to get you laughing! From the vegan pet dog to using plastic bags at a natural food store, the Goode Family face getting in line with modern society. A definite must see this month on MNet!

ON THE TEllY

DATE NIGHT9 AprilComedy

Claire and Phil foster are your typical middle age couple, doing the same thing all the time. The spark is gone. We finally get to witness the hilarious Tina Fey and Steve Carrel hit the big screen together, just the lead characters give this witty action comedy away. Their usual “date night” turns to be more than they bargained for. Their mistaken identity throws them into a side of the city they have never seen and a night of non-stop adventure. How different is their marriage after this eventful date? You’ll have to see if a night of excite-ment and danger can rekindle their romance. If you enjoyed ‘Did you hear about the Mor-gans?’ this comedy will be sure to have you laughing out loud. Mark Wahlberg makes an appearance too. Yum!

GAMEsLIPSXbox 360Take note though that you need wire-less microphones! ‘Lips’ offers a great selection of tracks which you certainly won’t get bored of in a hurry. Songs that feature on this

karaoke – like game includes: ‘Bleeding Love’ by Leona Lewis, ‘Umbrella’ by Rihanna and ‘Another one bites the dust’ by Queen. In total there are 40 tracks to choose from and sing-ing along, especially with a friend is über fun! Xbox has also received a lot of compliments about their microphones, which are said to be the best on the market, the games graphics are amazing and the fact that this is some-thing the whole family can do together makes the game worth every cent.

BLUE BLOODSBy Melissa De la Cruz*****If you love ‘Gossip Girl’ you will love his book. Think Manhat-tan’s elite teenagers that all go to some fancy pants school – the love-hate relation-

ship between best friends and the quiet girl’s climb to the top of the social ladder. Now mix in a lot of vampire action, a bite of love and it’s the perfect accessory to your book collection. ‘Blue Bloods’ gives us a quirky explanation on who vampires are with an indulgent look into their lives. This is a four book series and we cannot wait to read the next one.

Paris Hilton, a philanthropist? Yep, we thought that was weird too. In the past the heiress has been involved in philan-thropic causes, but somehow falls short of the nail when it comes to her state-ments. What gave this away? Her choice of words, according to Wellsphere, “I have, like, a million clothes and more than 500 pairs of shoes, so I’m going to give a bunch of them to orphanages and children’s hospitals. I never wear some-thing twice.” Because a fi ve-year-old or-phan desperately needs a pair of pumps and a mini, right? You thought that was bad? When Paris had her charity 28th birthday party at club Butter in New York,

a guest was told to “donate to cute little brown kids in Africa,” claims website Zing Zama. Makes you want to cringe, doesn’t it? To top it all off, once upon a time in Rus-sia, Paris saw dwarves in blue body paint doing promotions and decided that she just had to have one! The Blemish says that she started talking to them in a baby voice, saying that she had always wanted a smurf as a kid and was willing to adopt them. She was heard saying, “Can I take them home? I didn’t realise that this is where they came from.” As you can guess, the dwarves were pretty offended. Don’t give up, Paris, you’ll get it right, eventually…

Paris Hilton said WHAT?
