I enjoy putting this magazine together but if we keep losing each week then this match day version will have to make way. 2 game and 2 losses. Their a top side and they will do well but we did ourselves no justice today. We have a full report for you in the magazine but here is what a couple of Toee fans thought of the game:-

1 What did you make of the game today?I thought it was very entertaining and very open. Lots of needless fouls from Swansea broke up our play a little, but no complaints.

2) Was it a fair result?I'd have to say that despite Swansea having chances, Everton were deserving of the win. It would be disrespectful to say we could have scored a hat ful, but I think it would be true.Swansea had chances to change the outcome at the end of the rst half, but missed their opportunity, and Moyes gave our defence a kicking at half time no doubt.

3) Who impressed you for the Swans?Williams. Looked a good player.

4) Where do you think the Swans will nish this year?Lower mid table. Too many strong teams to suggest they'll get higher.

1)What did you make of the game today? The rst 30 mins we were excellent and should of put the game to bed. The rest was great for a neutral.

2) Was it a fair result? The result is fair, however the score could of been a silly one.

3) Who impressed you for the Swans?I was surprised to see Routledge start ahead of Dyer, but he was good in spells.

4) Where do you think the Swans will nish this year?bove Liverpool.

The game came as no surprise to our optimistic Swans fans whose pre-match predictions was this on planet Swans:-Swans to go 1-0 up but then Everton draw level just before half time, Everton score another 2 in second half. Result 1-3 sadly

Everton are the perfect example of how to succeed in this leauge, throw in the skill factor plus their work work work policy is relentless , we match that and the game will be ours 2-0

1-3 ... Everton win.

Been right thus far, cant keep it up forever, so hoping for a wrong prediction today.

andy1300, oldjack Vermin hater and Danielsan2000 respectfully.

I hope you enjoy the review more than the game.

“Last goal wins!” shouted a supporter sat in the row behind me on Saturday in the East Stand, the kind of ‘gallows’ humour which brought a couple of half smiles to a gaggle of miserable faces around me as John De Guzman stepped up to take a free kick in the ninetieth minute of a woeful performance by Swansea City. I have to give full credit to Everton who were absolutely brilliant throughout and will be knocking very hard on the door of a top six nish this season in my opinion.

David Moyes has spent over a decade constructing his Everton side, and has always been praised for operating on a shoe string budget, but delivering extraor-dinary results for the Toees. Some very shrewd transfer dealings have paid dividends for the Merseyside club, particu-larly after the Scot masterminded a return to the club for South African maestro Steven Pienaar, and they have made a fantastic start this season in the premier league. I will not use the clichéd phrase ‘we won’t play a side of that quality every week’ because this is the premier league, but we may not face a side that functions as well as Everton do every week.

From back to front they are strong, physical and technically gifted. English international defender Phil Jagielka oers a composed and organised presence at the back in front of the ever reliable Tim Howard, while further forward the attack-ing talents of Pienaar and Mirallas work hard in the forward positions to support the striker, usually Jelavic, although he

missed out yesterday through injury. There are two players however that I would single out in David Moyes’s side who really make the dierence for Everton; Marouane Fellaini, and Leighton Baines. It is unfortunate for Baines that he has someone like Ashley Cole in front of him in the England set-up, defensively solid and brilliant in dead ball situations he operates as a second winger some-times when he makes overlapping runs to support and get crosses in. Belgian international Fellaini on the other hand is another prospect altogether, it seemed to me that Moyes almost gives him a free role in the middle of the park to express himself at both ends of the pitch. One moment he operates as a classy holding midelder, winning back possession and making his presence felt in the tackle, the next he bombs forward to oer support as another striker, small wonder then that both court the attentions of big clubs during each transfer window.

The visitors took their chances very well, they had thirty attempts on goal during the game, and three made the dierence. Everton started by far the brighter and pressed us high up the pitch immediately from the kicko. The rst goal was laced with controversy as Fellaini appeared to handle the ball as he laid a cutback for Victor Anichebe to re home after some good build up play, but given the pressure they had put the Swans under, it had been coming. The second was a sweeping counter attack from the visitors half as Phil Neville dealt with a long ball towards Ki before nding Fellaini who in turn fed Pienaar to cross for Mirallas to bury a rebound after his initial eort came back o the crossbar. Fellaini had been brilliant

throughout with Baines always a danger on the overlap and from set pieces. The two combined brilliantly for Everton’s third as the Belgian reacted rst to a whipped in free kick from Baines to guide a header past Michel Vorm. The nal whistle, and food for thought for Michael Laudrup and his sta after being taught a real lesson by a team that will be very dicult to beat home and away this season it seems.

For Swansea, it is dicult to criticise the team selection when we were left with few options through injury, suspension and illness. What yesterday showed is how much we miss all the good work Leon Britton does on and o the ball when he is absent, and while Ki shows a nice touch and an eye for a pass, I wonder if his work rate will ever match the levels of the diminutive Londoner in centre mideld. The sending o of Nathan Dyer late on for two silly yellows is very disappointing, yet the return of Chico to the rst team once the nal match of his suspension (away to Crawley on Tuesday) is served will give Laudrup a timely boost when it comes to team selection for a challenging trip to the Britannia on Saturday. There are those will look for a scapegoat, but we should remember that two of the current back four are in their rst full Premier League campaign. Tate missed the majority of the last campaign with injury while Ben Davies is still adapting to life in the rst team at the Liberty, having said that, the latter is really impressing me the more I see him with his composure on the ball and showing maturity far in advance of his nineteen years.

Two defeats on the bounce is disappoint-

ing, but not fatal to our hopes for he season. The real time for concern would be if we were creating no chances whatso-ever, and even at two-nil yesterday we continued to create. Had Danny Graham connected with Rangel’s centre it could have been very dierent going into the break, while the Spaniard himself could have scored at the death of the rst half. There were chances for Michu, Hernandez, while Ki sent a 25 yard curler just wide of Howard’s goal as we looked for a route into the game, but to no avail. Laudrup has imposed a more open and attacking style on the team this season, which will inevitably leave space for the opposition to exploit, and it was cruelly exposed during Everton’s counter attack for the second goal, but I believe this mentality can bear fruit for us. With a little more luck in front of goal, we would have seen a much closer score-line.

I would urge Swansea fans to remain positive, the Premier league is a marathon, not a sprint, and there are more challenges yet to face. A testing trip to Stoke next up for Laudrup’s men before back to back home games against Read-ing and Wigan Athletic, two games that we must look to take the maximum from if we are to continue our progress in this division. Survival is still the aim for us, and I have no doubt that we will learn lessons from this defeat.

Until next time then!

Pl Rang ErtVorm: 8/10

Says it all that he was our best player. Very unlucky with the second goal after pulling off an outstanding save. Not to blame for any of the others and pulled off a couple of good saves early on to keep us in the game. Back to his best after a couple of poor games by his standards..

Davies: 5/10

Should have got a lot closer to Piennar for the second goal and failed to offer too much going forward. Played against the best side he’d faced in his career and at times it showed. Still doing well and deserves a good run in first team. I hope he doesn’t get disheartened .

Rangel: 6/10

Missed our best two chances of the game at a vital time in the match but its great to see our right back with that positive attitude to get forward. No tragic errors at the back, by far the best player in the back four at the moment.

Williams: 5/10

Pressure builds pressure and at the minute, for the first time in years, questions are being asked of the Welsh international. Not a great performance once again but played against a quality player today. Never great to see your centre half lose a header to a chest even if that chest is 6 foot 4.

Tate: 4/10

I get quite annoyed with peoples opinion of Tate. The boy was Com-pletely out of his depth but I think Fellaini and Everton will do this to a few centre backs this season. He just looked shaken and he struggled from early on, faked being disappointed to be taken off but I think he must have been relieved it was over. Not as bad as people like to think so

Ki: 7/10

The best outfield Swans player on the pitch and the player who looked like making something happen. Ending the game at centre back, which was a waste and a real kick in the teeth to both he and Tate. Done enough for a start v Stoke.

De Guzman: 5/10

Another on an off game for the Dutchman, his delivery from corners was outstanding and for the first time in years I got excited when we won them. We lost the whole midfield battle and he never really looked up for a fight in there

Michu: 6/10

He looks a real handful. A nightmare. Not the greatest game hell ever play but he still looked like he could score at any minute. Strong, clever and will be too good to stay with us for another season. Enjoy him while he’s here.

Dyer: 5/10

Played a ball to an imaginary man early on when a good break happened and never excited too much. He never got good ball and tried too much when he did. He put in a great ball at the end of the first half which deserved a finish.

Routledge: 6/10

The ball he played for Rangel was as good as Beckham at his prime but he struggled to have too much an impact on the game. Rightfully picked above Dyer and will inevitably get another run out at Stoke but ill need to do better.

Graham: 5/10

Its not happening for him at the moment, worked hard as ever but we need a bit more and I think its time to give one of the contenders a go. 1 goal in 5 is better than how he started last season but he looked more lively last term. No harm in being dropped from time to time

Subs:Britton: We really missed him, he mopped up well when he cam on but it was too late.

Schakter: Won a free-kick late on but never got involved before then. No idea why Moore didn’t come on and 20 minutes earlier too.

Dyer: Ummm. Unlucky, I suppose, frustrating 2 games, banned for next, the impressive start has become less so.

The game at Goodison was largely a case of sitting back and hoping for a draw as happened a few days earlier against Newcastle. The game at the Liberty was more even but Everton were professional and took their chances.

Watching Everton's game against Newcastle on Monday night was a frighten-ing experience for a Swans fan, in particular the way Everton played in the rst half, regularly taking Newcastle apart, in particular down the left hand side.

Baines, Pienaar and Osman in particular were players who caught my eye with Baines involved in all 6 of the top passing combinations:

From the stats it was also noticeable the comparison in successful take-ons past players for both sides:

The arrival of Everton on Saturday brings one of only three teams to do the double in the league over Swansea (the others being Norwich and Man Utd), arguably Everton were the most convincing of those three and are have one of the best blends of talent and hard work in the league.

Swansea only registered two shots on target over the two games, the lowest they had against any side (next lowest was vs. Stoke with 5):

Osman was tidy but also has an eye for goal with Pienaar provid-ing assists for both Everton's goals.

Thank god though for the second half when Newcastle were a far better outt and caused Everton some problems or I would have been even more worried about Saturday than I am now. Given our injury/suspension issues in defence I can see this being a really open game and I'd be more than happy with another 2-2 at home.

It's too easy to get scared by the names in the opposition but with Pablo, Michu, Dyer et al, there's plenty for Everton to be worried about too.

The most famous clash between the two clubs, from the Swans’ point of view, was in 1964. On 15th February, Swansea Town met Stoke at the Victoria Ground in the FA Cup 5th Round. Despite Stanley Matthews opening the scoring, the game ended in a 2-2 draw. This was in fact the great Stan’s last ever goal before he retired. Matthews had also scored in an FA Cup game at the Vetch, nearly 30 years previously in 1935.

In the replay, Swansea went through 2-0 with goals from Todd and McLaughlin, (and went on to beat Liverpool away in the quarter-nal!).100 years ago:

The closest game to the next upcoming xture 100 years ago was a home Welsh League game against Merthyr Town on 28th September 1912. The reserves were away at Milford Town on the same day.History against Stoke:Stoke and the Swans have played each other 58 times in competitive games. The overall record is P58, W19, D18, L21. Their rst League match was on Christmas day 1925, which ended 1-1 at the Vetch. However, Swansea have played Stoke City 6 times in the FA Cup, and Stoke have never won. Adrian Forbes will forever be fondly remembered by Swansea City supporters for a number of reasons. There are those who will remember him for his impact on the side following his move from Luton Town, bringing his experience and pace to Kenny Jackett’s side in that memorable campaign which was our last at the Vetch. Perhaps some will point to his honest, energetic, and hard-working perfor-mances every time he pulled on the white shirt. I think for many though he will be remembered for scoring two very important goals in the clubs history. The rst coming in the nal league game at the Vetch eld to not only take the chase for promotion down to the nal day that season, but gave the Vetch the best possible send o. The second goal stands out as my own everlasting memory of him in Swansea colours.

It came on May 7th, Bury v Swansea City, and the nal game of the 2005 season. I was lucky enough to be one of ve thousand Jacks who made their way to Bury knowing that if we could win and third placed Southend United failed to take three points away at Grimsby, then it would be enough to snatch the nal automatic promotion spot in League two that season. An incredible atmosphere began to build before kicko, and it was not long before the travelling support had something to celebrate. After just 25 seconds, a long ball from the defence bounced in front of mideld dynamo Adrian Forbes, who controlled the ball brilliantly with his forehead before smashing an angled volley past Glyn Garner in the Bury goal; cue pandemonium, and the rst of two pitch invasions that afternoon!. That goal was to be the winner, and when news came through that Southend had drawn at Grimsby, our promotion was conrmed. It could be argued that it was that sunny afternoon in May over seven years ago that marked the beginning of an incredible journey to the very top of the football pyramid, and Adrian Forbes played his part in that rise.

The Greenford born midelder played for a number of clubs during a playing career that spanned fourteen years. He began at Norwich City, where he spent six years and established himself as a rst team regular. He then moved to Luton Town before spells at Swansea, Blackpool, Millwall and Grimsby. He spent a short time with non league Lowestoft town before retiring as a professional footballer in May 2012. During his time at Swansea he scored eleven goals in almost seventy appearances for the club and became a rm fans favourite. His release in 2006 following defeat to Barnsley in the league one playo nal was a disappointing end to what had otherwise been a great period for him and the club.

This year Swansea City celebrates it’s 100th birthday, so I sought out the man aectionately known as ‘Forbsey’ by the Jack Army, to see what he made of our rise to the Premier League, his part in it all, and what he remembers from his days at the club.

ESV: Hi Adrian! Following your departure from Luton Town in 2004, what persuaded you to move to South Wales? When I knew I had to leave Luton Town due to them having nancial trouble I set about trying to nd a new club. I had quite a bit of interest but narrowed it down to Yeovil town or Swansea. I went to

Yeovil rst and had a good look around and had a good chat with Gary Johnson. Myself and my agent left Yeovil and drove straight to Swansea and from the moment I met Huw Jenkins and Kenny Jackett my mind was made up. Their characters and vision for what they wanted to do long and short term for the club made me realise quite quickly this was the place I wanted to be and I genuinely feel I made the right decision.

ESV: What are you best memories of your time with Swansea? My best memories must be the atmosphere at the Vetch and of course scoring two rather important goals. The last league goal at the Vetch and the promotion clinching goal a week later.

ESV: What do you make of the progress of the club in recent years? The progress the club has made in recent years is amazing but no real shock to me. As I said in my previous answer, I knew the vision the club had several years ago and to see them achieve it is superb and now the next vision must be to become an established premier league club for several years to come.

ESV: Was there a feeling that Swansea could reach the top during your time there?I also felt the club was going places with the building of the Liberty stadium and just missing out to Barnsley at the Millen-nium stadium to stop back to back promotions, but you just knew the club was going to continue to rise and grow and I believe the rest of the squad felt that way as well. We weren’t wrong.

ESV: You scored the last league goal at the Vetch (V Shrewsbury Town) and against future England goalkeeper Joe Hart. What are your memories of that day?I’ve got great memories of the day I scored the last league goal at the Vetch. It was a must win game for us to stay in contention for automatic promotion so the pressure was really on, that coupled with what was obviously going to be a very emotional day for everyone watching made for a truly amazing afternoon. To get a goal at a packed Vetch was always amazing but to score a goal like that past the future England number one and on such a special occasion was just magnicent

ESV: Following promotion at Bury where you again stole the headlines with another winning goal, what was the mood like in the club at that time? A new stadium, promotion, the club must have been a great place to be at that time? After winning promotion up at Bury in front of 5000+ crazy jacks/ Willy getting arrested and what can only be described as the most amazing /hilarious trip back to Swansea just made life at the club amazing. We knew the club would be playing league one football in the beautiful Liberty stadium in front of 20000 people each week. The city as a whole was a superb place to be, as the success on the pitch seemed to lift everyone. Condence and belief was certainly high going into that season.

ESV: Many of the players you played alongside are still at the club, the likes of Gary Monk, Alan Tate, and Leon Britton. Did you ever imagine you’d see them lining up against the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool at the top of English football?

To see Britts/Monks and Tatey playing in the premier league is brilliant. Would I have loved to still be alongside them?well yes of course. To see them playing against the best players in the world at some of the best grounds in the world is a pleasure and I couldn’t be happier for them. They are a credit to themselves and the club that they are still there from league two to the premier league. So serious dreams have come true there.

ESV: Who was the best player you ever played alongside at Swansea?I was very fortunate to play alongside several superb players in my time at Swansea. Andy Robinson, Leon Britton, Sam Ricketts, Gary Monk, and Alan Tate to name but a few. I have to say Lee Trundle was superb. His ability on the ball was just outstanding and some of the things he could do with a football were just ridiculous. I’m sure many a defender went home and had sleepless nights after playing against Trunds!

ESV: You scored around eleven goals for Swansea, two of which were very important. Is there one that sticks out in your memory in particular? And why?Obviously the goals against Shrewsbury and Bury speak for themselves and nothing gets close to those two for importance and timing, but a goal I scored against Nottingham Forest away is also very memorable. I was playing out on the right wing and made a run in eld between their two centre backs. Roberto Martinez played a perfect pass over all the defenders I then jumped and met the ball in mid air to lob the keeper from just outside the area. The Jack army went mad. To score a goal like that at a ground like that was amazing.

ESV: The 05-06 season was to be your last at the club, and it ended with playo defeat to Barnsley. Following your release, you said at the time that it left ‘a bitter taste in the mouth’. What was the most disappointing aspect about not being kept on at the club, despite being a rm fans favourite? The most disappointment thing about leaving Swansea was purely the fact that I loved all aspects of my time there. The club was a great play to play and the fans were amazing and a joy to play in front of and I was never really given the chance to say a proper goodbye to them all. I also had my two young boys settled and going to school in Killay and we all loved living there. I was oered a new contract at the club and everything was agreed and it just needed to be signed, however every time I asked for it so I could sign it and dierent excuse was made

ESV: Where do you think Swansea can realistically nish this season? What can the club achieve with a football legend in Michael Laudrup as manager? The start Swansea have made this season has been a dream but we are only a month into the season and there’s a lot of hard work ahead. The clubs rst thought must be to retain Premier league status for next season. With a manager like Michael Laudrup in charge they will hopefully improve on last season’s nishing spot, which would be a superb achievement.

ESV: Finally, what plans do you have for the future?I am currently coaching at Norwich City and loving being back where it all started for me. It’s the perfect start on the coaching ladder for me with superb facilities and other very good coaches for me to learn from. My long term plan is to become a coach in the premier league as I never had the chance to play there and I intend to work my socks o to hopefully someday achieve that. Could that happen at Swansea I wonder?? Well I would love the opportunity to one day be back at the Liberty in a coaching capacity and pick up where I left o, especially as I feel that I have unnished business there. Time will tell whether I’m fortunate enough to have that dream come true. At the moment I’m very fortunate to be working with some superb players at a superb club.

Adrian Forbes ensured his name will forever be remembered in the annuls of Swansea City with his contribution to this football club. He is a true Swansea legend in every sense of the word. And for those who were not fortunate enough to be at Bury seven years ago? Have a look at this…http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ul3s6QbVYjI

With more racism this week in football plus huge discussions about what chants are funny and what oversteps the line, it got me thinking about us and our attitudes towards opposing fans and those lower league boys down the M4.

Firstly, racism has absolutely no place in football or society. It is the ultimate in stupidity to belittle, mock or make assump-tions of somebody due to their race or colour of their skin. Now I must say I think this is obvious and more than 99% of football fans agree with this and the others are idiotic no hopers who seek to blame other people for their atrocious life which they have built for themselves.

But we do want chants in football and I want fans having banter, funny banter, abusive banter, but there is a denitely a line.

‘Who’s that coming out of William Hill? It’s Michael Chopra!! It’s Michael Chopra!!!!’

I sang this to the little rat when he set foot on gods grass and I, like many, found it funny. Which side of the line is that? The man had a gambling problem, an addiction, is it Ok to poke fun at someone with an addiction?

‘He has a hole in his heart, Joe Kinnear, Joe Kinnear’

Going back a few years now but this chant was sung to the then Luton manager when visiting the Vetch after his continued heart problems. Not in great taste I must admit but I joined in, found it funny and still do to be honest.

Channel 5’s ‘The Wright Stu’ had a discussion on chants this week and one viewer who phoned in was cut short while singing ‘Park, Park wherever you may be, you eat dogs in your own country, well it could be worst, you could be a Scouse, eating a rat in your council house’. Now for me that is a good chant, it’s amusing. Matthew Wright stated that cannot be right and brought up the Hillsborough disaster. Now this is unmentioned, any referral to the Hillsborough disaster or the Munich air disaster or anywhere where there is a loss of life or a major accident has taken place is without doubt wrong and MILES over the line but that doesn’t mean that you can’t chant anything towards that team.

Over the last decade the Swans and football as a whole has become more, let’s say, middle classed. And generally I don’t like it. Football and the Swans are not for the working classes anymore which is detrimental to both the game and society BUT (and I never thought I’d ever say this) I do prefer our ‘more mature’ and ‘more respectful’ relationship with our main enemy and visitors to South Wales. I don’t think the majority of fans would sing that to

Joe Kinnear now, which if I’m honest is probably a good thing. I’m not saying that poor, working class people have less morels, (I hope not anyway because I certainly lie in that bracket) but I think its blatantly obvious that there are ‘dierent’ fans in the Liberty than there were at the North bank and they generally have more money, are less drunk, swear less and do have a slightly greater interest in the game rather than the away fans (much to footballs loss I must add).

Our Customer claims handler in the printers is a Cardi fan and we naturally have a lot of banter. He says that their going through the same changes as we have but a few years behind. Their new stadium, like ours, has attracted more families, more auent, well behaved fans. We both agree that we would happily go back in time: give me the Vetch everyday of the week (where we had no money, drank more, swore more and had a slightly greater interest in the away fans than the football) and he wants Ninium Park back

W i L? (but then who would want a lego stadium? an accident waiting to happen). But with these growing new Cardi fans I would hope that we don’t have to tolerate horse riding actions referring to the tragic death of Terry Coles next time we play the boys in Blue (I mean red, or whatever they are playing in by then, lets face it, we wont be playing them for a few years yet). That is also MILES over the line and a complete disgraceful.

Now I hope clubs leave the Liberty thinking that we have an intimidating environment but we’re good humoured and a friendly club and I think most do. I think we know where that line is here and we represent ourselves well.

Proud to be a Jack!! (in our nancy pancy stadium with sober judges)

Is calling Michael Chopra a rat this side of the line? lets face it, I was being kind.
