MARCH 2016 THE SKIPPER Regional News 13 Ocean Venture II Lighter, faster midwater trawl from Swan Net-Gundry A new remarkable DynIce net for Albacore Tuna pioneered by Swan Net Gundry has been succesfully trialed during the 2015 season by the Castletownbere trawler “Ocean Venture II”. The 768-metre pair midwater trawl is the only one of its kind in Ireland. The all-Dyneema net is less than half the weight and has significantly less resistance when towing that a comparative nylon trawl. This makes it faster in the water for less fuel usage and more successful capture of the quick-swimming Albacore. Designed and manufactured for Neilly and Ross Minihane’s “Ocean Venture II”, the success of the net last season has led to considerable interest from other tuna skippers. “We have had a lot of questions and enquiries about it”, admitted Johnny Gallagher, design and marketing, Swan Net-Gundry. “This is the only net of its kind in this country; the only all- Dyneema net made for anyone in the Irish fleet.” The Minihanes reported that the gear was very easy to shoot and, although their previous trawl had the same dimensions, the new one had considerably less resistance. “We had great readings in the front and back end and we felt the trawl was always very sharp in the water. But the best indication that this gear is fishing well is the hauls were larger than expected from what was seen in the sounder,” Ross Minihane said. He added that their previous trawl with the same dimensions was 2,738Kgs and the new DynIce trawl was 1,200Kgs which Ross described as a “massive reduction”.
