From the Principal

Year 11/12 Outcome Improvement

We have been looking into the structure of Year 11 and Year 12 with the opportunity to improve student outcomes.

One of the most important factors that has been highlighted is the significantly less time a Year 12 student has at

school before their final WACE exams compared to other years. Having researched a number of options or

alternative time structures, the College will be moving to a new structure for Years 11 and 12 in relation to Terms

and Exams.

The first thing modified was the move of Year 12 Mock Exams to the holidays, gaining some additional teaching

Page 2: Swan Christian College 1 Week … · related topics. They thought VM Ware was a clothing line and that Drop Box was literally a box that you dropped. The visitors were set straight

time. This has been in place for two years now, and we still require additional teaching time to ensure students can

achieve their best. From 2014, Year 12 courses will start in Term 4 of Year 11. In essence what this means is that

students will be in Year 11 for Terms 1, 2 and 3 and come back to Term 4 for Year 11 exams. As soon as these

exams are finished, the students will start their new course covering Year 12 work. They will then work through until

Years 7-10 go to their final exams.

We are aware that this means students who typically expect to finish after their final Year 11 exams and not return

to school will be at school longer than previous Year 11 students. In providing these details 18 months in advance,

we trust that you understand the need to improve the structure of the Year 11 and 12 courses to ensure every

opportunity for improved outcomes. Thank you for working with us on this matter as we encourage, educate and

equip your children in their future.

Congratulations to Mr David YoungmanMr Youngman, the College Director of Innovation has been listed as one of two finalists in the 22nd WAiTTA (WA

Information and Telecommunications Awards). WAiTTA recognises outstanding performance and contributions by

members of the ICT community in Western Australia.

He will make a 30-minute presentation in the 'Professional Domain - ICT Educator of the Year' category to panelists

during the first week of May and the winner will be announced at a Presentation Dinner in June.

Compass Student Leadership ConferenceEarlier this year the College Captains and Vice Captains attended the Compass Schools Conference in Canberra.

The theme of the conference, which was attended by school leaders from across Australia, was 'know the gospel;

know the culture: translate'. Over four intensive days the leaders reflected on their personal values, the values and

culture of the College and leadership. The skills and knowledge gained by the students throughout the conference

will hold them in good stead as they serve the College community. In addition to a full conference schedule,

delegates participated in educational programs/tours to the Australian War Memorial, Museum of Australian

Democracy and Parliament House.

'The Compass Conference was a great opportunity for us to grow and develop as leaders. One of the best things

about the trip, in my opinion, was the visit to the war memorial. It was truly amazing, humbling and devastating to

see what happened in our nation's past and how the brave men and women of Australia stood up and fought not

only to protect our nation but to help other nations.' Josiah Lewis - College Captain.

'Spending time with other leaders like myself was what made the conference truly special. I grew in my faith and

was able to bond with other awesome students in a safe and convivial environment.' Austin Allen - College Vice-

Captain.

'The Canberra Compass Conference was a really great experience. The speakers were enthusiastic, the other

student leaders were passionate and the weekend was filled with such inspiration because of them. It was a

wonderful opportunity to allow our faith and leadership to grow'. Bonnie McGeady - College Captain

'The Compass Conference was a wonderful experience and we met many passionate student leaders and teachers

from around Australia. It was an amazing opportunity to learn how our faith can influence our leadership and how to

develop both'. Emily D'arcy - College Vice-Captain

Uniform PolicyIt is a requirement that students wear the correct College uniform to school in the morning and from school in the

afternoon. This includes public areas such as Midland Gate and the train station. The continued support of parents

in monitoring uniform standards is appreciated.

Winter uniform is to be worn from Monday 6 May 2013 (first day of Term 2). The Uniform Shop has extended

opening hours should you require additional/new winter uniform items. Please check the website for hours and

appointment times leading up to the holiday break.

On Wednesday 10 April Year 6P led the Junior School Assembly. The 6P students took the parents and the rest of

the students on a visit to 'Device World'. Visitors came to 'Device World' totally clueless about all sorts of device

related topics. They thought VM Ware was a clothing line and that Drop Box was literally a box that you dropped.

The visitors were set straight by the natives of Device World and at the end finished with the thought that it was all

as easy as 'Click, Touch, Swipe' - a rendition of the Jackson 5 song - A, B, C.

Students enjoyed their performance and parents learnt a little bit more about this sometimes almost foreign

language their children use for device work.

This year the Senior School Drum Corp, led by a former student Andrew Taylor, performed at the Baby Proms

concert in the Maali Mia. The Year 3 Percussion Ensemble played I Wanna CCC on the Marimbas, Glockenspiels

and African Djembes. The orchestra performed a dramatic piece entitled Magma conducted by Mrs Anne Wheat,

Samuel Tye from Year 12 made a special appearance as Beethoven in Meet the Instruments of the Orchestra, and

Year 7 performed Inspector Gadget.

Special thanks to the parents and teachers for their support of this inspirational concert, and thank you to the

Jumbie Jam Group and the Year 9 players.

Pirate Day

On Friday 12 April the Year 1 classes celebrated Pirate Day. All the students and the teachers dressed up in their

best pirate wear and participated in a range of pirate-related activities. The students began the day with a fashion

parade, showing off their costumes and then went on a treasure hunt around the College and discovered some

buried treasure! With the assistance of our amazing parent helpers the students created their own pirate face

biscuits complete with a liquorice eye patch. Thank you to all the parents for their efforts with their child's costume.

Everyone looked amazing and had a fantastic day!

We asked our students in Year 1 what they liked best about Pirate Day. Here is what they had to say:

'I liked the treasure hunt' Jack

'The chocolate in the treasure hunt' Tahlley

On Tuesday 12 March Bonnie McGeady and Emily D'Arcy, College Captain and Vice Captain, and Mrs Bailey, were

invited to an International Women's Day breakfast held at La Salle College. It was a time for us to come together

and celebrate women and the power of women. Julie Smith-Massara, co-founder of Australian Mine Services, a

specialist provider of engineering and maintenance services to the mining industry, give an inspirational address

through the re-telling of some of her own personal struggles. She reminded us that with dedication and

determination we can be successful and achieve our goals.

It was a great breakfast and we would like to thank La Salle College for inviting us, and Mrs Bailey for taking us.

ANZAC Assembly

On April 15, Swan Christian College Senior School held its annual ANZAC Day assembly in the Swan Centre. The

Honorable David Johnston, Senator for Western Australia and Shadow Minister for Defence addressed the

students, reflecting that the commemoration of ANZAC Day was not a glorification of war, rather the remembering

of the ANZAC traits of courage, mateship and sacrifice.

Literature students are strongly encouraged to attend Drama events and as such, teacher-selected drama evenings

are suggested throughout the course of the year - at this stage we are planning one per semester.

The play Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller has been selected to coincide with the Literature course this year

and is playing at the Heath Ledger Theatre, State Theatre Centre of WA in Northbridge, early in Term 2 from 4-19

May. It is recommended that Literature students try to attend such events.

Swan Super Soupers

Last year the Salvation Army came to the College to speak to our students about addressing the plight of the

homeless people in Perth. The students learned that the Salvos could only afford powdered soup to give to the

homeless due to funding restrictions, and this touched our students' hearts. After some discussion the students

came up with the idea of cooking soups for homeless people once a month.

At the end of last year we had a trial run and in 2013 our group has gone into full swing, we have had two sessions

so far. On Monday 8 April our Home Economics kitchen turned into a hive of activity. Fifteen students and staff

washed, peeled and chopped vegetables for seven 30L pots of soup, producing pumpkin, potato and leek, celery

and corn, and mixed vegetable soups.

Needless to say, suppling this amount of soup to the Salvos would not happen without the donations and

contributions of many people. It is such a delight to see the bags of vegetables, meats etc, being delivered to the

College and we thank you all for your generosity. We would also like to thank the people at the Midland Farmers

Markets for produce and National Foodservice Equipment in Belmont for donating 6 x 32 Litre aluminium pots with

lids to hold all the soup.

With your help, we will continue this monthly venture next term. As winter is drawing near the plight of the homeless

is getting worse. If you would like to help but are unable to bring in vegetables, you can make a donation to the

Swan Super Soupers at the Senior School administration and we will use this money to buy produce.

The next Swan Super Soupers will be on Monday 13 May 2013 (second week of Term 2)

If you have any queries, please contact Fabienne Clicteur on [email protected].

Missions Update

Live Below the Line

Live Below the Line is an initiative of the Oaktree Foundation which aims to address issues of extreme poverty in

the world. Swan Christian College seeks to partner with Oaktree in providing both education and action. Oak Tree

foundation will conduct a seminar for Year 9 to 11 students on 10 May which will help them to understand the

desperation for over 2.8 billion people in the world who live on less than $2 a day.

A number of Swan students have already signed up to the Live Below the Line Program where they will attempt to

eat for less than $2 a day for 5 days in Week 2, Term 2. This will help to create empathy for the poorest in the world

as well as to raise vital funds to address these issues. More information on Live below the Line can be found

www.livebelowtheline.com.au .

If students would like to be involved in Live below the Line they can put their name down in Student Services.
