Union criticises self-employment’s ‘lackof stable income and poor job security’SELF-EMPLOYMENT accounts for 44 percent of the rise in employment since mid-2010, with pensioners, part-time workers and‘odd-jobbers’ the fastest growing groups ofBritain’s new self-employed workforce, saysthe TUC.

The TUC analysis shows that despite self-employment being a relatively small part ofthe UK jobs market – just one in seven work-ers are self-employed – it has accounted for 44per cent of all employment growth since thelast election.

Workers aged 50 plus account for half theincrease in self-employment, with self-em-ployed workers aged 65 and over the fastestgrowing group in the labour market (increas-ing by 29 per cent since the end of 2010).

More than 40 per cent of all the self-em-ployed jobs created since mid-2010 are also

part-time. The TUC is concerned people areonly taking this kind of work because theycannot find jobs which provide the stableemployment they really want.

Self-employment has been going up steadilysince early 2008, even when unemploymentwas rising sharply, and has increased evenmore in recent years.

The TUC is concerned the growth of self-employment is at the expense of more securejobs.

Other forms of self-employment – for exam-ple selling goods online or registering as self-employed to do the occasional ‘oddjob’ – tendnot to pay enough to make a decent living,says the TUC.

Self-employed workers also have no rightto paid sick, holiday, maternity or paternityleave, redundancy pay or protection against

unfair dismissal – a particular problem forself-employed workers who are sub-contract-ed to another employer.

Self-employed workers are often poorlypaid, says the TUC.

Recent Resolution Foundation researchfound that earnings from self-employmentfell by a fifth between 2006 and 2010, while of-ficial figures published by Parliament foundthat the average annual income from self-employment is less than £10,000 for women.

The TUC is concerned insecure workincluding self-employment, agency work andzero-hours contracts is becoming a perma-nent feature, even as the economy recovers.

TUC general secretary Frances O’Gradysaid: “Self-employment accounts for almosthalf of all the new jobs created under thisgovernment.

“But only a tiny fraction run their ownbusinesses, while the vast majority work forthemselves or another employer – often withfewer rights, less pay and no job security.

“While some choose to be self-employed,many people are forced into it because thereis no alternative work.

“The lack of a stable income and poor jobsecurity often associated with self-employ-ment makes it hard for people to pay theirbills, arrange childcare, plan holidays or evenbuy or rent a home.

“The economy is finally back in recoveryyet people’s wages are still shrinking andmany are unable to find stable employment.

“Until we see decent pay rises and better jobsecurity, working people will continue to feelthat the recovery is passing them by.”
