The past fiscal year has been an exciting time for Seacrest Village Retirement Communities, and we are honored to share the 2013-2014 Annual Report with you as we enter the beginning of our 71st year of service and dedication to San Diego’s seniors.

Our many successes in the past year would not have been possible without your unwavering support. The Resident Assistance Fund experienced another fruitful year with charitable care as the primary beneficiary of this year’s philanthropic effort, raising over half a million dollars. Contributing to the success of the Fund includes: our visionaries of eldercare and their leadership support as members of The 211 Club; proceeds from two stellar events: the 36th Annual Women’s Auxiliary Gala, “Sapphire Jubilee,” and the Guardians of San Diego’s 23rd Annual Golf & Tennis Tournament; as well as our Annual Appeal, the Legacy of Caring Tribute Program, and an array of other meaningful giving opportunities.

In addition to our philanthropic accomplishments, we would be remiss not to mention some of our other organizational achievements – specifically that our Sam & Rose Stein Center, located on our Encinitas campus, will soon provide day services to those with mild cognitive impairment; our affiliate, Seacrest at Home, a non-medical home care agency, is available to serve those in our greater community; and our Joseph & Dorothy Goldberg Healthcare Center once again had a successful annual Department of Health Services State Survey. We thank you, our supporters, for giving us the opportunity to serve San Diego seniors at this impeccable standard.

As you know, Seacrest Village Retirement Communities is a development of San Diego Hebrew Homes, a non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization serving the ever-growing San Diego community in the Jewish tradition since 1944. Between our Encinitas and Rancho Bernardo campuses, Seacrest Village works with over 400 clients daily through an array of programs and services, embracing their changing needs every step of the way. Our communities and our affiliate, Seacrest at Home, offer unsurpassed service as well as a continued commitment to the highest standards in independent, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, rehabilitation, home care, and adult day services.

Created and maintained through the generous support of families in San Diego and beyond, our campuses and affiliates reflect the sincerest dedication to our seniors. We encourage you to continue your support of Seacrest Village. Every gift and every act of service allows us to continue our mission to provide services to seniors in a Jewish environment that promotes community, independence and innovation. Celebrating 10+ years of Support and Compassion Having just celebrated the Jewish New Year, we began to reflect on the New Year ahead for the Seacrest Foundation. The purpose and goal of the Foundation is to support Seacrest Village Retirement Communities in its service to the elderly; and thanks to you, our contributors, we have been able to carry out that mission for 10+ wonderful years. By virtue of your investment of both time and resources, our support continues to grow in beautiful ways. Thank you.

A little story: A few months ago, Seacrest Foundation was the recipient of an estate gift that was originally established in the early 1980s. The couple who set up this gift never intended to live in the Homes but had a passion for the work that was being done for those in need. Upon their passing, and over thirty years after the gift instrument was established, their generosity and foresight is today funding charitable care needs for those who have no place to turn. The children of this beautiful couple had never been to Seacrest Village until recently. Sitting in Robin’s office they shared thoughts and stories and the love began to shine through. After their visit to Seacrest and hearing about the current and planned work of the Homes and the Seacrest Foundation, the children could clearly understand their parents’ passion for Jewish eldercare. It was an inspiring moment for all.

As two people who are very close to and feel so passionate about the Homes, “we want to give a shout out” - as our kids would say - to the good work that is being done across all Seacrest affiliates. A tremendous move is being made in the provision of senior care, and Seacrest Village Retirement Communities has positioned itself so that it is able to embrace the shifting times and meet these needs. Between the creation of Seacrest at Home, which opened its doors close to two years ago and provides home care services so that people can remain in their own homes with a little extra help, and the opening of the Sam and Rose Stein Day Care Center, which will provide day services for those who need a safe and stimulating environment (outside of their home) during the day, Seacrest is again leading the way in the provision of elder care. We are very proud of these efforts.

Since the creation of Seacrest Foundation, many gifts have been established for the “Legacy of Promise” planned giving program. Seacrest Foundation is grateful for your legacy giving, which will ensure that those in need have warm and loving care for generations to come. In return, Seacrest Foundation promises to support Seacrest Village Retirement Communities in its ongoing and successful pursuit of excellence. While we know that many of our generous contributors may never utilize the services that Seacrest Village provides, we are grateful for their vision and compassion to care for others.

Seacrest Foundation has experience in helping to structure planned gifts that fulfill charitable, financial, and estate planning goals. Event Highlights

36th Annual Women’s Auxiliary Gala, “Sapphire Jubilee”On February 1, 2014, the Women’s Auxiliary of Seacrest Village Retirement Communities held its 36th Annual

Gala, “Sapphire Jubilee,” at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla in honor of Sylvia & David Geffen for their philanthropic

impact on the Jewish community. The event raised over $350,000 to be used for the provision of charitable

care for those residents who, many due to illness or injury, have exhausted their financial resources.

Guests received a Blue Carpet greeting to coincide with the

sapphire theme and enjoyed cocktails prepared by the Flairaholiks

(juggling bartenders). The evening commenced with a warm

welcome by Robert Haimsohn, Chairman of the Board, followed

by Dan Cohen, Master of Ceremonies and Emmy Award winning

Morning Anchor of CBS News 8. Mr. Haimsohn thanked everyone

for their support of Seacrest Village and gave special recognition

to the Board of Trustees and Executive staff. Pam Ferris, President

& CEO welcomed her colleagues and three VIP tables of Seacrest

Village residents who were in attendance.

Honorees Sylvia and David Geffen were moved to tears after

watching a brief video, including tributes from respected friends

and community philanthropists Jerome Katzin z”l, Melissa and Michael Bartell, Silvana and Richard Christy, and

Suzi and Bernie Feldman. Everyone in attendance agreed with a standing ovation that the Geffens have helped

to build a brighter and stronger San Diego through their selfless acts of philanthropy and leadership.

Past Gala Co-Chair, Larry Bloch, gave his personal testimony as to why the Resident Assistance Fund is a

priority, and guests responded enthusiastically by raising their bid numbers. Larry shared the following advice

from his mother to inspire the audience to make a charitable contribution to Seacrest Village: “You will never go

poor helping out someone in need.” It was truly an evening to remember filled with friends, fine food, and funds

raised dedicated to the residents at Seacrest Village Retirement Communities.

15th Annual 211 Club Patron Recognition PartyMagical, fantastic, elegant — just some of the ways in which to

describe the ambiance for this year’s 211 Club Patron Recognition

Party, held on Sunday, July 13, 2014, at the residence of Lee &

Frank Goldberg. The entire Seacrest Village family is truly grateful

for the Goldbergs’ warmth and hospitality, as they welcomed over

130 of our most generous supporters into their home, proudly

named “Rancho Encantado” or Magical Ranch.

and new acquaintances. The evening’s fare was finely crafted by Pamplemousse Grille’s Executive Chef and Owner,

Jeffrey Strauss.

Members of The 211 Club — an arm of the Milton D. and Madeline L. Goldberg Resident Assistance Fund — are a

prestigious group of community leaders who are the cornerstone of a tremendous fundraising effort. Their individual

contributions of $1,000 or more annually help to ensure the greatest possible quality of life for our residents. This

annual appreciation party recognized our July 2013–June 2014 supporters, as a way to express our gratitude for the

care and services that are made possible through their generosity.

23rd Annual Guardians of San Diego Golf & Tennis TournamentGuardians of San Diego raised over $150,000 for Seacrest Village

Retirement Communities at the 23rd Annual Golf & Tennis Tournament

“Take a Swing for Seniors.” The tournament presented by the William

Gumpert Foundation was held July 28th at the exclusive Del Mar

Country Club.

The all-day sporting event included a silent auction, BBQ buffet lunch,

V’s Barbershop sunscreen station, cocktail style reception and an awards

program in Del Mar’s private Club House. The hot item in the auction

was the opportunity to fund a Frozen Yogurt Machine to keep residents,

family and friends cool at the Seacrest Village Encinitas campus; other

auction items included golf at The Bridges, The Crosby, The Country

Club of Rancho Bernardo, along with date nights, family trips and beauty

packages for men and women, a limited edition Wyland lithograph, and

much more.

Contest winners are Paul Stubbs for Men’s Closest to the Pin, Jenny Liu

for Women’s Closest to the Pin, Curtis Burkhead for Longest Drive, and

Chris Warren for Straightest Drive. Jane Ottenstein won the sold out

raffle drawing for a Jetson Electric Bike. This year’s committee was led

by co-chairs Devin Chodorow and Earl Altshuler, and included members
