MessAge fRoM the BoARd ChAiR And pResident / CeoThe past fiscal year has been an exciting time for Seacrest Village Retirement Communities, and we are honored to share the 2012-2013 Annual Report with you as we enter the beginning of our 70th year of service and dedication to San Diego’s seniors. We experienced a banner year for the Resident Assistance Fund, raising nearly $1 million for charitable care at Seacrest Village, and we saw impactful growth in our newest affiliate – Seacrest at Home. A special “thank you” to our outgoing Board Chair, Stanley Pappelbaum, MD, for his tireless efforts in making Seacrest at Home a reality.

Our many successes in the past year would not have been possible without your unwavering support. Our 35th Annual Women’s Auxiliary Gala raised significant funds for both charitable care as well as a brand-new bus for the residents of Seacrest Village at Encinitas; Jeffrey Strauss opened his newly-remodeled home with gorgeous coastal views to our most generous supporters at the annual 211 Club Patron Recognition Party; and Guardians of San Diego held its 22nd Annual Golf & Tennis Tournament at the exquisite Del Mar Country Club to benefit the Resident Assistance Fund at Seacrest Village.

Also, we would be remiss not to mention that our Joseph & Dorothy Goldberg Healthcare Center received “zero” deficiencies on its annual Department of Health Services State Survey. Additionally, as we were composing

this letter, the news came through that Joseph & Dorothy Goldberg Healthcare Center also received zero deficiencies on a surprise Federal Life Safety Inspection – it simply doesn’t get any better than

that, and we thank you, our supporters, for giving us the opportunity to serve San Diego seniors at this impeccable standard.

As you know, Seacrest Village Retirement Communities is a development of San Diego Hebrew Homes, a non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization serving the ever-growing San Diego community in the Jewish tradition since 1944. Between our Encinitas and Rancho Bernardo campuses, Seacrest Village works with over 400 clients daily through an array of programs and

services, embracing their changing needs every step of the way. Through comprehensive and progressive care options and delivery systems, we encourage and support a life of dignity and

spirituality. Our communities offer unsurpassed service as well as continuing commitment to the highest standards in independent, assisted living, memory care and skilled nursing and rehabilitation. The highest possible quality of care for our residents is our

foremost priority.

Created and maintained through the generous support of families in San Diego and beyond, our campuses and affiliates reflect the sincerest dedication to our seniors. We encourage you to continue your support of Seacrest Village. Every gift and every act of service allows us to continue our mission to provide services to seniors in a Jewish environment that promotes community, independence and innovation. We thank you for another outstanding year and welcome your further involvement with Seacrest Village.

fRoM the foundAtion pResident And ViCe pResidentCelebrating 10 years of Support and Compassion

We hope that the New Year brings you and your families only good health and special times together. As you know, the purpose of Seacrest Foundation is to support Seacrest Village Retirement Communities in its service to the elderly, and thanks to you, our supporters, we have been able to carry out that mission for 10 wonderful years.

In the past five years, we have raised approximately $11 million to help Seacrest Village Retirement Communities design, build and open the Ottenstein Vitality Center. This tremendous addition to the organization’s Encinitas Campus houses the Esther & Bud Fischer Aquatics & Fitness Center and the Ellen & Ingram Chodorow Synagogue. These buildings allow residents to develop both their physical and spiritual well-being in an environment conducive to overall well-being. In addition, Seacrest expanded the Lee & Frank Goldberg Residence Court by adding 30 apartments to meet the needs and desires of those who want different features and amenities than what had previously been available. This building was fully occupied within a short while of its opening.

Seacrest Foundation has also raised significant funding to support the charitable needs of clients receiving care from Seacrest at Home. Seacrest at Home is the newest affiliate of Seacrest Village Retirement Communities and is dedicated to the provision of companionship and other services to make it possible for those who want to remain in their own homes to do so. Clients of Seacrest at Home interact with staff who embody the same level of professionalism and compassion found in the staff who work in one of the Seacrest Village communities.

Since the creation of Seacrest Foundation, many gifts have been made to the “Legacy of Promise” planned giving program. Seacrest Foundation is grateful for your legacy giving – which will ensure that those in need have warm and loving care for generations to come. Seacrest Foundation promises to support Seacrest Village Retirement Communities in its ongoing and successful pursuit of excellence. While we know that many of our generous contributors may never utilize the services that Seacrest Village provides, we are grateful for their vision and compassion to care for others.

The test of man’s insight is his willingness to plant a tree under whose shade he may never sit.

Seacrest Foundation has experience in helping to structure planned gifts that fulfill charitable, financial and estate planning goals. Your planning can make a difference in countless lives – and for generations to come. We welcome you to become a part of Seacrest Foundation as we seek to help make life as meaningful as possible for those who came before us.

special gratitude to the Katzin family for establishing the Judith silverman Memorial fund at the seacrest foundation.

A fAMily’s speCiAl loVeKatzin Family’s Generosity to Seacrest Foundation is Far-Reaching

When Jerry and Miriam Katzin’s niece, Judith Silverman, recently passed away their hearts were very heavy. Judith was a special part of their lives and they will miss her dearly. Through their grief, and that of their entire family, they have established the Judith Silverman Memorial Fund which will provide charitable care and make it possible to change the lives of so many people—and for generations to come. Jerry and Miriam adored Judith, as they do her husband and children.

With sincere gratitude and friendship we thank the Katzin family for continuing their mission of taking care of those in need, just as Judith did during her lifetime.

Text below provided by the Silverman family.

Judith Mindelle silverman11/21/1945 - 05/30/2013Judith Mindelle Silverman was born in Chicago, IL to Samuel and Sarah Jastromb on November 21, 1945. She attended the University of Arizona, where she majored in education and fell in love with her husband, Dr. H. Arthur Silverman. The Silvermans moved to La Jolla in 1972, where Judy worked as a librarian and educator at several schools including Torrey Pines Elementary School, The Jewish Academy, and Del Mar Pines Elementary School. She finished her career at her beloved Francis Parker School. Over the years, she changed the lives of both the students and the teachers. Her dedication and compassion were unparalleled.

Judy enjoyed traveling with her husband and family. Her most memorable adventures included riding a camel in Israel, rafting on the Colorado River, standing on a glacier in Alaska, hiking in Portugal and Italy, a Mediterranean cruise, traveling to Norway, and driving a one person underwater submarine in Cozumel. In 1973, Art and Judy fell in love with Sun Valley, Idaho and this became their home every summer and winter break. In Sun Valley, Judy loved hiking, outdoor concerts, pies from the farmer’s market, Perry’s chocolate chip cookies, reading her book, sitting in the window seat, and being with her family.

Judy passed away peacefully at her La Jolla home surrounded by her loving family on May 30, 2013. She put up an incredible fight against a rare and aggressive lymphoma, inspiring her family, doctors, and nurses with her strength and will.

She is survived by her husband, Dr. Silverman; four children, Rachel, Deborah, Sam, and Sarah; her sons-in-law John and Matt; daughter-in-law Ginger; and five grandchildren, Hannah, Will, Cody, Maggie, and Brooke; plus six grand-dogs. In addition, she is remembered by her brother, Joel Jastromb and his family in Chicago, IL, and her Aunt and Uncle, Miriam and Jerome Katzin of La Jolla, CA. Judy was passionate about her family, being a grandmother, teaching, reading and cooking. She is remembered as a loving wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, sister, niece, aunt, friend, and educator.

She is dearly missed by her family, friends, colleagues, and students.

on the coverThe watercolor Hearts by Livia was created in February, 2013 as part of the Memories in the Making Alzheimer’s Association art therapy program for individuals with Alzheimer’s and related dementias. Volunteer facilitators help people with dementia – many of whom often have no art background – create drawings and paintings. These sessions provide participants social interaction and boost their self-esteem while opening the channels of communication with loved ones. Livia has been a resident of The Katzin Residence since November 2009.
