United States Air Force aims highSTAFF REPORT
[email protected], ext. 5501
T he power of flight has been harnessed by the United States military
ever since the hot-air balloon was employed for spying and observation missions during the Civil War. Although bal-looning gave way to the “air machine” in the early 1900s, it was not until 1947 that the Air Force officially was born as its own branch of service.
On Aug. 1, 1907, the U.S. Army Signal Corps estab-lished the first aeronautical division, which was assigned to “take charge of all matters pertaining to military bal-looning, air machines and all kindred subjects,” according to the Air Force’s website,
www.af.mil.Just 10 years after the first
manned flight at Kitty Hawk, N.C., by the Wright brothers, the Army formed the First Air Squadron, in 1913, accord-ing to Lawrence Benson, Air Force historian.
The air service would earn its first significant duty in World War I, during which it grew to include 197,000 troops and 11,754 aircraft. The air service conducted 150 separate bombing attacks in which it dropped 138 tons of bombs, while losing 289 airplanes, according to www.af.mil.
The coming of age for the air service would be during World War II. In June 1941, the War Department cre-ated the Army Air Forces, as
a branch of the Army Ground Forces. After having shrunk to 26,000 troops and fewer than 2,000 planes after the first world war, the new AAF would swell to include 80,000 aircraft and 2.4 million troops by the end of World War II, Benson said. This would be
the largest air armada in his-tory.
In addition to flying over every theater of the war in Europe and Asia, it was the AAF that would deal the final blow to the Japanese war effort in August 1945, drop-ping the first two nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Having proven itself essen-tial to the Allied victory, the AAF became an independent entity and a full partner of the other branches of service on Sept. 18, 1947, when the United States Air Force was born.
New technology, such as the long-range B-36 bomber and the F-86 Saber jet fighter, became invaluable assets to those fighting on the ground
in Korea and Vietnam.American air power heav-
ily contributed to the end of the Cold War, Benson said. With the U.S. winning the arms race, while developing advancements such as the stealth bomber, the Soviets began to fall behind the Unit-ed States in military technol-ogy, especially in the air.
Today, the Air Force con-sists of 350,000 active-duty members and 193,500 reserv-ists. It has gone from being a small branch of the Army to an independent and instru-mental part of most military operations, either by flying missions, delivering supplies or gathering reconnaissance. The mission itself has evolved as well, according to www.af.mil.

Army born to fight in the RevolutionSTAFF REPORT
[email protected] 800-798-4085, ext. 5501
From the Greens of Lex-ington, Massachusetts, to the deserts of Iraq, the
United States Army has been a part of shaping American his-tory for 230 years.
Born of necessity in June 1775, the Army has grown from a collection of militias fighting an invading British army to one of the elite forces in military history.
The current war on terror in Iraq and Afghanistan is the lat-est incarnation of the Army’s history of duty and service to the United States.
“I am proud to be a con-tributor and do my part. I feel it is necessary and my way to preserve the safety of my family and my country,” Sgt.
Maj. David Murray said on the Army’s website, www.army.mil.
The active-duty soldiers in the U.S. Army are today’s link to a long history of service in the oldest branch of the military.
The Army dates back to June 14, 1775, when it was created by the Continental Congress, before America even was a sov-ereign nation. The war would be an 8-year conflict, officially end-ing on April 11, 1783. The Army likely never totaled more than 30,000 men under Gen. George Washington, commander of the Continental Army.
The Army again would be asked to answer the call of duty briefly in the War of 1812, when for a second time America would have to go to war with an invading British army.
The first draft in military his-tory came during the Civil War.
The Union army consisted of between 2.5 million and 2.75 million soldiers, according to www.civilwarhome.com. Union soldiers who fought and died in battle numbered 110,070. About 94,000 more Confederate sol-diers died in war.
The Civil War proved to be the first “technological” war as
telegraphs, railroads, and rifle artillery first were extensively used by the Army.
The draft would become a defining factor in future Ameri-can wars as the Army again was called overseas in 1917, to help turn the tide in World War I. With congressional approval of the Selective Service Act, 2 mil-lion American soldiers would go overseas. This war would be one of attrition in trench war-fare. More than 53,000 Ameri-cans lost their lives in battle during the “Great War.”
The largest mobilization in U.S. Army history was during World War II. By 1945, 7.9 mil-lion soldiers were mobilized, with casualties for the army reaching 165,800 dead or miss-ing, according to www.wikipe-dia.org.
Following World War II, there
were two Asian conflicts, Korea and Vietnam. Korea never officially was declared a war in America, rather it was termed a police action, according to www.wikipedia.org. The con-flict lasted from 1950 to 1953.
The Vietnam War is the only conflict in which the United States failed to achieve its objective. During the pro-tracted conflict that lasted from 1960 to 1975, 58,226 soldiers died.
Today, the Army continues its duty to serve America. It is not serving only in Iraq or Afghani-stan, but 273,000 American soldiers also are serving in 120 countries. For all the changes, advances, and hardships the Army has endured over more than two centuries, success still comes down to the individual character of each soldier.

MISSION STATEMENT:
Coast Guard patrolling waves at homeSTAFF REPORT
[email protected], ext. 5501
T he U.S. Navy is not solely responsible for protect-ing America’s interests
on the waves. Since the 18th century, the U.S. Coast Guard and the various services that preceded it have patrolled the nation’s shoreline against ter-rorist threats, drug smugglers and illegal immigrants, while enforcing the nation’s tariff and trade laws and maintaining security.
In 1789, when Congress fed-eralized lighthouses built by the colonies to help with mari-time navigation, it created the Lighthouse Service, which was placed under the control of the Treasury Department.
In 1790, Congress created the Revenue Cutter Service by authorizing the construction of 10 vessels to enforce tariff and trade laws, prevent smuggling, and protect the collection of federal revenue.
During the 19th century, Con-gress created the Steamboat Inspection Service to provide for the security of passengers on board such vessels. Con-gress also created the U.S. Life-Saving Service and the Bureau of Navigation.
Before the turn of the 20th century, these assorted agen-cies were separately charged with enforcing laws against slavery, piracy and smuggling, protecting the environment and charting the nation’s coastlines. In 1915, Woodrow
Wilson signed the Act to Create the Coast Guard, which com-bined the Life-Saving Service and Revenue Cutter Service. The other services and bureaus eventually were folded into the Coast Guard, as well.
The Coast Guard was moved
from the Department of Trans-portation to the Department of Homeland Security in 2003, to provide security at the nation’s seaports.
In 1967, the Coast Guard joined the Department of Transportation.
The Coast Guard works as far south as the Florida Keys and as far north as the polar region.
Today, the Coast Guard’s 39,000 active duty personnel’s activities include intercepting illegal immigrants from Cuba and Haiti, rescuing people in distress at sea, patrolling for drug runners and breaking up ice in the northern polar regions for search-and-rescue operations.
The Coast Guard began hunt-ing drug runners in the 1920s,
when Congress tasked the service to curtail alcohol smug-gling. The first drug seizure in Coast Guard history was in 1973, when the USCGC Daunt-less boarded a 38-foot boat with more than a ton of mari-juana on board.
In 2005, the Coast Guard intercepted $9.7 billion worth of drugs, up from $7.7 billion the previous year.
In 1986, the Coast Guard added helicopter rescue teams that drop into any type of water and weather conditions in order to rescue people at sea.
The Coast Guard has 12 dis-tricts covering the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, the Gulf of Mexi-co and the Great Lakes.

The Coast Guard and its prede-cessors have served in the U.S. Civil War, the Spanish-American War, World War II, Vietnam and the Gulf War.
During the Spanish-American War, cutters fought in the Carib-bean Sea and provided guard against attack of the Spanish Fleet along the shoreline.
During the Civil War, Revenue Cutters patrolled the seas against commerce raiders and provided firing support for troops on shore.
The Coast Guard helped enforce U.N. sanctions during Operation Desert Shield, which was in place to protect Saudi Arabia, leading up to the Gulf War.
Notable guard members include actor Beau Bridges, comedian Sid Caesar, journalist Walter Cronkite, football player Otto Graham and author Alex Haley.

S ix men worked together to hoist the makeshift flagpole consisting of
a battle flag and a long, heavy steel pipe. One steadied the bases while the other five shoved the heavy standard into place.
It was just a simple photo-graph taken by a battlefield correspondent on the island of Iwo Jima, and it has been re-created countless times, captured in bronze, appeared in American history books, and hailed in song.
It has become one of the most recognizable images of Ameri-ca’s fighting men and women. The raising of the flag marked the end of one of the bloodiest battles in Marine Corps his-tory. In 36 days of fighting on the tiny Pacific Island in 1945, during World War II, 25,851 Marines were killed or wound-ed, one-third of the invading force.
It would be one of the defin-ing moments in the 231-year history of the Corps – a his-tory that goes back to the very founding of the country itself.
On this day in 1775, the Sec-ond Continental Congress passed a resolution forming two battalions of Marines.
Though they would be count-ed among the Continental Army’s ranks, the edict made it clear this would be a force designed for fighting on land and sea:
“Particular care will be taken that no persons be appointed to office, or enlisted into said battalions, but such as good seamen, or so acquainted with maritime affairs as to be able to serve to advantage by sea when required.”
Although the new battalions were well accomplished in the revolution under the command of the first commandant, Maj. Samuel Nichols, the first incar-nation of the Corps soon would be disbanded.
With the end of the war, both
the Navy and the Marines were decommissioned, and the gov-ernment sold off all the Navy’s ships.
On July 11, 1798, President John Quincy Adams would sign the Corps back into existence.
From then on, Marines would play a significant role in every American conflict large and small. They fought alongside Gen. Andrew Jack-son during the Battle of New Orleans and helped defend the Capitol in the War of 1812.
During the Mexican War, Marines famously fought their way from the sea to the “Halls of Montezuma,” which was memorialized in the open-ing lyric of the Marine Corps Hymn.
During the Civil War, Marines mostly fought along-side the Navy, particularly aiding in the Union blockade of Confederate ports. Follow-ing campaigns at the end of the 19th century in Cuba, the Philippines and Guam, the Marines came into their own in the 20th century.
In 1912, the Corps added flight to its land and sea capa-bilities.
In 1918, during World War I, they earned their nickname “Devil Dogs” for their fight in Belleau Wood, where nearly 12,000 Marines were killed or wounded in less than 2 years of fighting.
World War II marked the great modernization of the Corps.
During WWII, participa-
tion in the Marines peaked at 485,113 troops comprising six divisions and five airborne units.
During the Korean War, 424,000 Marines served. Of those, more than 4,500 gave their lives for their country, and 26,000 more were wound-ed.
Vietnam proved to be the Marines’ longest and most taxing engagement. More than 13,000 Marines would die in Vietnam, with 88,000 wounded.
Marines activities rounded out the 20th century with involvement in several smaller campaigns. In the early 1990s the Marines took a leading role in the first Gulf War, mobilizing 92,000 troops in Kuwait.
Keeping true to their recruit-ing slogan, “The few, the proud,” Marines today make up the smallest of the U.S. Armed Forces. There are 180,000 active duty Marines and 40,000 reserves.

To maintain, train and equip combat-ready Naval forces capable of winning wars, deterring aggression and maintaining freedom of the seasMISSION STATEMENT:
Maintaining freedom from sea to shining seaSTAFF REPORT
[email protected] 800-798-4085, ext. 5501
W ith water making up more than 70 per-cent of the Earth’s
surface, the United States Navy has a lot of territory to cover. For more than 230 years, its fleets have defend-ed the nation in locations throughout the world.
The U.S. Navy is the branch of the armed forces responsi-ble for conducting naval oper-ations. Its mission is “to main-tain, train and equip combat-ready naval forces capable of winning wars, deterring aggression and maintaining freedom of the seas,” accord-ing to www.navy.mil.
The U.S. Navy traces its ori-gins to the Continental Navy. The Continental Congress established the Continental
Navy on Oct. 13, 1775, by authorizing two ships to abate those supplying the British Army during the Revolution-ary War. Today, Oct. 13 is cel-ebrated as the birthday of the U.S. Navy.
Early on, naval power played a significant role in the nation’s defense, from the War of 1812 to the Civil War, where the Union had a dis-tinct advantage over the Con-federacy on the seas.
In 1907, several of the Navy’s ships, dubbed the Great White Fleet, were showcased in a 14-month tour of the world to demonstrate the Navy’s abil-ity to fight on a global stage.
The Navy might have seen little action during World War I, but it grew strong in the years before World War II.
The U.S. fleet suffered a devastating loss of men and
ships at the hands of Japanese pilots when they attacked the fleet in dock on Dec. 7, 1941, in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
Five of eight battleships at Pearl Harbor were sunk or sinking, the rest of the fleet damaged. Three light cruis-ers, three destroyers and three smaller vessels were lost along with 188 aircraft.
Nearly 2,400 Americans were killed, including 68 civilians, and 1,178 were wounded.
Dubbed a date that will “live in infamy” by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, the attack propelled America into WWII.
The U.S. Navy grew tre-mendously, faced with a two-front war on the seas in both Europe and in the Pacific, where the U.S. Navy achieved acclaim during the Allies’ “island-hopping” campaign.
The Navy continued to play major roles in later conflicts. It served to blockade Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis, and was active in Korea, Vietnam and the Gulf War.
Today, the U.S. Navy main-tains a sizable presence in the world, deploying in such areas
as East Asia, Southern Europe, and the Middle East with the ongoing war on terrorism. There are nearly 500,000 men and women on active duty or in the Navy Reserve. The Navy operates 282 ships in active service and more than 4,000 aircraft.
Many sailors who served in the U.S. Navy have gone on to fame, including U.S. Presidents John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter and George H.W. Bush, comedians Jack Benny and Bill Cosby, rap artist Stan-ley “MC Hammer” Burrell, jazz saxophonist John Col-trane, astronaut Alan Shepa-rd, Jr., actors Tony Curtis, Kirk Douglas and Henry Fonda, and professional wrestler and former Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura.

Sauk Valley portraits part of traveling exhibit STAFF REPORT
[email protected], ext. 5501
SPRINGFIELD – An unusual and touching memorial to Illinois mili-tary members lost to the war on terrorism is avail-able for groups to request to exhibit, or for viewing online.
“Portrait of a Soldier” is an exhibit of hand-drawn portraits of Illinois military personnel who have been killed since Sept. 11, 2001, in the global war on terror.
The portraits are copies of the original, which has been given to the fallen soldiers’ next of kin.
The exhibit, which trav-els throughout the state, includes portraits of six of Sauk Valley’s fallen.
The project began in August 2004, when art-ist Cameron Schilling of Mattoon, then a student at Eastern Illinois Uni-versity, drew a portrait of Army Spc. Charles Neeley, a Mattoon native who was killed in Iraq.
Schilling gave the sketch to Neeley’s parents, to convey his sympathy. In October 2005, he decided to draw a portrait of every Illinoisan who has fallen in the war against terror.
Local service men and women represented in the exhibit include:
• Army Pfc. Scott Tyr-rell, 21, of Sterling, died Nov. 20, 2003, of wounds received 6 days earlier in Tikrit, Iraq.
• Marine Lance Cpl. Andrew G. Patten, 19,
of Byron, killed Dec. 1, 2005, by a roadside bomb in Fallujah, Iraq.
• Army Sgt. Jessica M. Housby, 23, of Milan, assigned to the Army National Guard 1644th Transportation Company in Rock Falls, killed Feb. 9, 2009, by a roadside bomb in Route Golden, Iraq.
• Army Pfc. Norman L. Cain III, 22, of Mount Morris, killed March 15, 2009, by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan.
• Marine Staff Sgt. Justus
S. Bartelt, of Polo, killed in combat in Afghanistan on July 16, 2010.
• Marine Lance Cpl. Alec E. Catherwood, of Byron, killed during a combat mission Oct. 14, 2010, in Afghanistan.
Organizations are invit-ed to request the exhibit for display. Call the Illinois Department or Veterans Affairs at 217-782-0244 or go to tinyurl.com/PortraitOfASoldier to view the portraits or for more information.

Together Strong Using avatars and apps to help troubled vetsBY TODD SOUTHMCT News Service
H ector hasn’t left his house in weeks, and he’s been drinking
alone. Hector is a veteran who needs help.
Hector also is an avatar, a vir-tual character, featured in one of the scenarios presented in a new online and mobile applica-tion called Together Strong.
The app is an interactive game designed to aid those who are close to a veteran – to sharpen skills to notice warn-ing signs and guide troubled vets to seek help. It allows users to role-play situations involv-ing troubled military veterans with virtual characters, and to choose responses that might help them.
People who have had trau-matic experiences or fall into substance abuse may avoid seeking help as a rule, but vet-erans are especially vulnerable, worrying that they may be seen as weak if they seek help or tell others their problems, experts said.
The app – developed by Kogni-to, a Manhattan-based company that creates virtual situations to help improve health care, in partnership with the U.S. Depart-
ment of Veterans Affairs – helps the player navigate each scenario, offering tips and information. It awards gold stars when the player makes a good decision.
The app was developed over 7 months with teams of VA staff, military service members and veteran volunteers, said Ann Feder, manager of the VA’s New York/New Jersey mental health programs. While available to any-one free until the end of the year, the app was developed for the mental health system’s veterans.
Kognito CEO Ron Goldman said the company is offering the appli-cation to other veteran-focused organizations to use with their clients after the deadline, but it will not be available for individual purchase or download outside of the New York/New Jersey VA net-work after Dec. 31.
The VA estimates there are more than 720,00 veterans liv-ing in New York and New Jersey area covered by the network, and about 300,000 are enrolled. About
80,000 vets visit VA facilities each year.
VA staff and Kognito wanted the app to have as real a feel as pos-sible, so they adjusted the pro-gram based on feedback during several rounds of tests. They got notes about specific issues, such as how a despondent veteran might speak to others, dress, or take care of himself or herself.
Inside Hector’s apartment, for example, there’s a dead houseplant, multiple six-packs of beer atop the refrigerator and clothing scattered about. Hector looks tired, there are bags under his eyes and he slumps into the couch. The main character – acti-vated by the player – knows this is not Hector’s usual demeanor.
A common thread in each sce-nario is the way in which veter-ans downplay their problems or avoid asking for help.
This is common to many people who have had traumatic experi-ences, said Sam Spinelli, chief of the Substance Use Disorder Ser-
vices at the VA Medical Center in East Orange.
Spinelli worked in the VA devel-opment team to give feedback on the behaviors he’s seen in his nearly 25 years of working with veterans.
“What are they going to listen to? What are they not going to lis-ten to?” Spinelli said, noting that those concerns always are the focus of building the conversa-tions in developing the applica-tion.
This is the second app produced by Kognito with the New York/New Jersey system. The first, Family of Heroes, was released in 2011, to help families of veterans learn how to talk with their vet-eran about potential problems and how to seek help.
Since its release, it has been used by more than 62,000 people, Feder said.
It cost $200,000 to produce. The Together Strong program was made at a cost of $215,000.
In 2011, the New York/New
Jersey VA network looked at non-traditional ways to reach veter-ans, Feder said.
“How do you find that veteran that isn’t knocking on the door?” she said. Two ways are through the family and through fellow vet-erans, she said.
The VA in the last 3 years has built a peer network of 800 vet-erans working in VA facilities to assist other veterans. Feder said a way to expand the peer initiative was by giving anyone the tools to approach a fellow veteran, and Together Strong was enlisted to advance that mission.
Over its 10 years in operation, the 45-employee company has worked mostly with educational software, serving more than 450 clients, including Rutgers Uni-versity, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the U.S. Air Force Space Command, Goldman said.
Goldman said that the expecta-tions of learners, especially the generations familiar with the Internet and video games, require education to be interactive.
“You are active in it, making decisions, navigating the experi-ence, you are in control learning through practice,” he said. “If we don’t give that to them, they’ll just ignore what we’re doing.”
’’‘‘You are active in it, making decisions, navigating the experience, you are in control learning through practice.
