ROCK FALLS – The smell of sawdust and the sound of nails being drilled into wooden studs filled the air Thursday at Thome Elementary School.

Since the beginning of the school year, eight male students at the school have participated in a shop class.

“This class teaches the kids life skills,” said Rob Berry, who teaches the class. “You never know when you have to cut a board or put in a screw or fix a light switch.”

Berry also said teaching students how to use dif-

ferent tools is a valuable life skill.

To help in launching the class, the Bi-County Spe-cial Education Coopera-tive gave the alternative school a $490 mini grant.

The cooperative pro-vides educational ser-vices for children with a wide range of disabilities, from autism to attention deficit disorder to physi-cal disabilities. Its bud-get comes from state and federal money.

“Any teacher in Bi-County can write a mini grant up to $500 for what-ever activity they want in the classroom that regu-lar funding won’t pay for,” Berry said. “We used

the money to pay for tools and toolboxes.”

Thome School enrolls students with behav-ior problems and emo-tional disabilities. Fifty elementary, middle and high school students are enrolled.

The grant money did not come until October, but Berry wanted to start the shop class before that. So, he put up some of his own money until the grant was available.

“It was only a couple hundred dollars, but it was worth it, and the kids really enjoyed it,” Berry said. “Teaching this class is very important to me.”

Photos by Philip Marruffo Thome Elementary School teacher Rob Berry teaches his students how to use a drill during his shop class. Berry used a grant from the Bi-County Special Educa-tion Cooperative to create the class.

Students spent more than an hour in the shop class Thursday learning how to drill a screw into a wooden stud.

“Everyone needs to know how to use a drill and screw,” Berry said.

Berry also taught the students how to use a cir-cular saw and cut a flat piece of wood.

Students will use the pieces of wood to make a box, which can be used for their school supplies.

The students have also done other projects.

At the beginning of the year, they wrote their name in pencil on a wood-en stud. Then, they used a hammer and pounded nails into the letters to make their name.

“We sanded off the pen-cil marks and the nails showed their name,” Berry said. “They had a nice little

name tag to take home.”Students enjoy the shop

class.“We can do things in

this school we couldn’t do in normal schools,” said Brandon, a seventh-grader. “At Montmorency School, my main school, they don’t have shop classes.”

Michael, a sixth-grader at Thome, said the shop class is fun.

“I like pounding nails and cutting the boards,” he said. “It’s a good class.”

BY CHRISTI WARREN

DIXON – One month after Lee County Sher-iff John Simonton took office, big changes are happening.

Besides the usual departmental and struc-tural changes of a new sheriff, some changes are a little more obvious.

T h o s e i n c l u d e a n u p d a t e d s h e r i f f ’ s department website, and a new social media presence: a Facebook fan page that, as of Wednesday afternoon, had garnered more than 1,200 likes since it was started Dec. 6.

As for the changes that are harder to see, Simon-ton has been working closely with Dixon Police Chief Danny Langloss and State’s Attorney Anna Sacco-Miller to cre-ate a sense of teamwork and to build a support system throughout the various departments in the county.

Simonton describes the changes in three major parts.

Part One: Mutual Aid

Dixon police officers’ roles were expanded, adding the ability to respond to high-level crimes and serious acci-dents, and to provide back-up to Lee County sheriff’s deputies, if need be, within a 5-mile radi-us outside of Dixon city limits. It’s part of a new mutual aid agreement that Langloss and Simon-ton presented Monday night to the Dixon City Council.

“It’s not a patrol effort by any means,” Simon-

ton said. “It’s just an additional response. If a Dixon officer can get there first and regain control of whatever that incident might be ... or back up the deputy if in fact they need it, I think that’s using our resources wisely.”

And, Simonton said, if anything goes awry, or officers make a mis-step, the liability will fall to the department that employs them. For the guys in brown, that’s the sheriff’s department and Simonton. For the guys in blue, that’s the city police department and Langloss.

“It’s more of a comfort feeling,” Simonton said. “I only have two depu-ties out on the road on the day shift, and with a county as big as what we have, ... we’ve got to help each other out. But with regard to patrol, we’re going to keep [Dixon offi-cers] in the city limits for that.”

“The agreement in general is good for both agencies,” Langloss said, “because it increases the number of officers we can have respond to an emergency situation. Just last week, we had the armed robbery/vehicle invasion. Our two officers responded to it. The offi-cers saw people running [and with the help of the two deputy squads that arrived], they were able to set up a perimeter. ... The fact that the county was dispatched simulta-neously with us allowed one of the deputies to make an observation in a residence that allowed us to break the case so quickly.

“Before the agreement, county squads may or

may not have responded if they know something was going on in the city. The big change is that if they know something’s going on in the city, a major call, they’re being dispatched right away.”

Part Two: Regional Unit

Simonton has also cre-ated a regional SWAT team that will combine the city police depart-ment’s nine-person team with the county’s six-per-son team to create a sin-gle 15-member unit with one person in charge, rather than two smaller teams with different lead-ers.

“So, if there’s any inci-dent, whether it’s inside the city limits, or in the county, that entire team would go,” Simonton said.

The sheriff take lead on training exercises for the regional team, as well as lead action they might have to take.

Part Three: Cross Jurisdictions

Nine city police officers from the DPD investiga-tions and street crimes divisions were deputized, which grants them full police powers through-out the county. The expansion of their pow-ers, a move that hasn’t happened in Lee County since the 1970s, is an effort they hope will help them to crack down on crime in the county, spe-cifically when it comes to major crimes and drug investigations that might have multiple geographic ties: to Dixon, to Amboy, to Franklin Grove, to wherever.

“Crime doesn’t have jurisdictional bound-

aries,” Simonton said. “A crime that occurs in Dixon might be done by someone who commits a related crime in the county.”

“There’s a lot of time when we’re working a drug case, and we flip somebody, and they’re ready to go to their source,” Langloss said. “But if they’re out of the city, everything slows down and stops. The more work we’ve done in the Sauk Valley, the smarter the drug dealers have become. You’ve just got to go. ... It allows us to take action immediately because if they’re supply-ing, if they’re supplying Dixon, even if they’re out in the county, it’s impact-ing Dixon.”

Perfect dish for cold nightsTomato soup and melted-cheese

croutons restore spirits BY LEAH ESKINTribune News Service

One morning on the snowboard. One afternoon in the

ER. One day of vacation shot.

Slopes contraindicated, the boy in the wrist cast melts into despair: How will he fill 24 level hours?

Then rescue arrives. Uncle Hero pulls up in a hybrid, pops the trunk and drags out a rigid plas-tic panel, almost as long and wide as the car. He announces: “We’re going to blow things up.”

Can the sidelined teen know words any sweeter?

Uncle and nephew work side by side, aiming the rays of the high-altitude sun through the ripples of the enormous plastic lens. Applying the inge-nious combination of optical-engineer know-how and fearless-teen bravado, they explode soup cans, incinerate marshmallows, singe cin-der block.

It’s an exhilarating day in the mountains, marveling at the collusion of man and nature, burnt and fro-zen, exuberance and expe-rience. Followed by the combination of tomato soup and melted-cheese croutons. Ingenious.

Tomato Soup with Melted-Cheese Croutons

Prep: 20 minutesCook: 45 minutesMakes: 4 servings4 teaspoons finely

chopped fresh basil2 teaspoons finely

chopped fresh thymeKosher salt2 tablespoons unsalted

butter1 onion, chopped1 carrot, chopped1 clove garlic, chopped! teaspoon freshly

ground black pepper2 tablespoons each:

tomato paste, sugar2 cans (28 ounces

each) whole peeled plum tomatoes in juice, emp-tied into the blender and reduced to a slurry

2 cups chicken broth6 tablespoons heavy

cream4 slices white sandwich

breadSalted butter2 ounces sharp ched-

dar, slicedToss: Mix together basil,

thyme and a pinch of salt. Set aside.

Soften: In a large sauce-pan set over medium heat, melt unsalted butter. Tumble in onion, carrot, garlic, 1 teaspoon salt and the pepper. Cook, stirring, until vegetables soften and onions begin to color, about 10 minutes.

Simmer: Stir in tomato paste and sugar. Pour in tomato slurry and chicken broth. When soup begins to bubble, reduce heat and simmer, partially covered, until flavors meld and soup begins to thicken, 25-30 minutes.

Blend: Turn off heat. Using an immersion blend-er and caution about spat-ters (or a standard blender and respect for the “hot fill” line), puree soup smooth.

Stir in cream. Cover and keep warm over very low heat.

Melt: Butter both sides of each slice of bread with salted butter. Make two sandwiches, each filled with 1 ounce cheddar.

Toast sandwiches in a dry skillet over medium-low heat until outside is golden brown and inside is delightfully melty, about 3 minutes per side.

Serve: Let sandwiches rest 1 minute. Slice away

crusts. Cut each sandwich into nine neat croutons. Scoop soup into bowls. Scatter on mixed herbs and melted-cheese croutons. Enjoy right away.

Tribune News Service A classic combo gets a bit of a twist when a grilled cheese sandwich is cubed for croutons to top tomato soup.
