Executive Summary
This report consists of a summary of suggestions for a redesign of the website for popular
fiction author, Suzanne Collins. The design team was contacted by the webmaster for
www.suzannecollinsbooks.com to update the website, with the hopes of having a higher visitor
count and encourage users to revisit. The project team conducted research using the following
methods: benchmarking, an extensive survey, and multiple interviews. The data compiled from
each research method was used to confirm our designing goals and create concrete plans for the
redesign of the website’s architecture.
The current site serves as a place for those interested in Suzanne Collins and her authored
works, which could include the following types of individuals: teachers, aspiring authors,
students/young adults, adults, book-club members, parents of interested readers, librarians, and
interested readers. The current structure of the website inhibits users from interacting with the
website, in addition to the overall lack of content and site abilities.
The redesign plan stemmed from the analysis of research methods, extensive planning,
and including all elements needed to meet user needs and exceed expectations.
The following recommendations detail some of the design team’s recommendations:
• Address the lack of content available.
• Revise global navigation to include additional and changed content.
• Provide more biographical information for Suzanne Collins.
• Include a photo gallery.
• Include direct links for social media information.
• Allow users to create accounts and receive newsletters.
• Add a store.
• Include a portal for discussions, fan-fiction, and comments/ratings.
• Include thematic games for users.
• Include a search feature to enhance usability.
Any unfavorable results, for the website redesign, produced by the usability testing
methodologies and respective results will be taken into consideration based on predetermined
satisfactory requirements. The design team looks forward to upgrading Suzanne Collins’s
website and ultimately achieve the webmaster’s goal of increasing site visitors and encouraging
users to revisit by allowing users to engage with other members of the Suzanne Collins
community. By choosing our team’s redesign plans, the client and organization will supersede all
expectations.

Requirement Analysis
Organizational Purpose and Goals:
Suzanne Collins is the award winning and best-selling author who started working as a
television writer. Soon, she became the head writer for children’s shows at the WB Television
Network. Moving into authoring books, she created the popular Underland Chronicles and
earned a place on the New York Times Best Sellers list.
Although she has focused her career more on writing in the children’s genre, she is
probably best known for being the author of The Hunger Games series, which fits into the young
adult genre. This series became so wildly successful that they were eventually turned into
movies. Collins herself wrote the screenplay for the first movie in the series, The Hunger Games
(Biography.com Editors, 2016). It is reported that the franchise has grossed over $4 billion
(Statistic Brain, 2015).
Ms. Collins recently contacted our group and expressed an interest in having us revamp
her current website. She indicated that she wants the site to better reflect her personality and
creativity as well as utilize modern design styles and technical capabilities. While she believes
the current site was adequate when it was originally designed, her current level of success
demands that the site better support the needs of her fans and site visitors. Based on this request,
we have constructed the following redesign plan.
Purpose of the Website:
As with any research project, the purpose of a website’s design has organizational
realities and politics that must be considered. “In our dream world, we would design our
information architectures independent of technology, and then a team of system administrators
and software developers would build the infrastructure to support our vision” (Rosenfeld,
Morville, and Arango, 2015, p. 323). The purpose of the current SuzanneCollinsBooks.com is to
provide the author’s fans with a place to get information about the author. In addition, the
website provides information about the numerous works created by Suzanne Collins, whether it
be the world-famous Hunger Games trilogy or her popular Underland series. In addition to
information about her works, the website provides reviews from various sources of those works.
Goals of the Website Redesign:
The author’s current website lacks concrete organization and structure. Thus, the purpose
of the redesign of Suzanne Collins’ website is to enhance its quality to the level that reflects the
success of her literary career. Moreover, we plan to improve the structure and organization of
the author’s website. “Structuring involves determining the appropriate levels of granularity for
the information “atoms” in [an organization’s] product or service, and deciding how to relate

them to one another. Organizing involves grouping those components into meaningful and
distinctive categories, creating the right contexts for users to understand the environment they are
in and what they’re looking at...” (Rosenfeld, Morville, and Arango, 2015, p. 25). By achieving
our purpose and goals, we will add value to Suzanne Collins’ literary brand; and provide her
many fans with an effective tool to explore and experience her many wonderful works.
Suzanne Collins’ website—in its present form—is out-of-date and does not provide any
avenues for the author and her fans to engage and interact. Therefore, we plan to redesign the
website in a way that facilitates fan/author interaction and collaboration. The long-term strategic
goals of our plan are to improve Suzanne Collins’ website’s functional capabilities.
Furthermore, our vision encompasses a desire to provide users with an effective tool to navigate
the website and have a pleasant experience when searching for the author’s books. To
accomplish our vision, the following are the goals we have established for the redesign of
Suzanne Collins’ website:
• Organization system - The content of the site will be grouped based on a new
categorization plan. This will help the users be able to more easily find content they are
interested in. This includes the works produced by Ms. Collins, products sold and
information about her. An example includes how the store content will be sorted into the
categories of Accessories, Action Figures, Books, Clothing, Movies, Mugs, and Music.
• Labeling system - Based on the preferences indicated by the users of the site, labeling
terms used will be those that the site visitors can identify with. One example is that the
site will call the section about Ms. Collins’ life the Bio section.
• Navigation system – The new design will incorporate a global navigation system that will
be enhanced to include links to the additional features being requested by the site visitors.
These links will be placed strategically on all pages, thus providing global access to them.
An example is the addition of the site page links to News &Events.
• Controlled vocabulary – The controlled vocabulary will be updated to support the new
site. It will include metadata definitions and an extensive thesaurus. This will support
the users’ ability to run searches that will produce relevant results lists.
Data Collection
To have a successful web presence, research and data collection are essential steps that
must be taken to ensure usability. Before beginning the research process, it is important to
consider what types of audiences may be users of the website. When considering the users of
Suzanne Collins’ website, we determined that, at the very least, the visitors would be comprised
of young readers, their parents/guardians, other writers of young adult literature, and adult

readers. To design the best possible website that would benefit each type of user, we decided to
use multiple types of data collection techniques to determine what aspects of the website need to
be altered, added, eliminated, or redesigned. To gather such information, we used the following
methods: survey, interviews, and benchmarking. Each method used in the data collection process
is described at length below. The results of each method are listed in the Appendix.
Survey
To gather information regarding what users thought about proposed alterations to the
website of Suzanne Collins, a survey was taken by 26 participants through a link shared on social
media. Each user identified one of four outlined age groups and indicated whether he or she
visited the website before answering the following queries; at the beginning of the survey, it was
suggested that a few minutes be spent viewing the website www.suzannecollinsbooks.com. Each
question was framed by stating that the user should base their responses on the changes they
would like to see on the website, regardless of whether he or she would utilize each available
additional element. The answer choices were “strongly agree,” “agree,” “disagree,” and
“strongly disagree.” For the purposes of dissemination and data compilation, “strongly agree”
and “agree” were considered a definitive “yes,” while “disagree” and “strongly disagree” were
classified as a resounding “no.” To determine the user group for each participant, assumptions
would need to be made since age range was the only personal data collected. After calculating
percentages, the data showed that there was overwhelming support for our project goals. Lists of
survey questions, as well as the results, are included within Appendix 1.
Interviews
To gather impressions and feedback from the major user groups, six interviews were
given to gather thoughts about the site. In four of the six interviews, each interviewee was asked
to list ten observations for the website. The purpose of that interview structure was to determine
what each user group noticed, without any direction from the interviewer, to get raw, impartial
data. For the remaining two interviews, each interviewee was asked to compile a “pro” and
“con” list for the website, which would force the participants to analyze and rate each aspect of
the website.
Upon completion of this research step, data was analyzed and it was determined that
people had overwhelmingly negative reactions to Suzanne Collins’ website. When asked to
compare “pros” and “cons,” “cons” more than doubled the “pros” listed. By watching the users
interact with the website, it was clear that the website was lacking basic functionalities which
limited the overall capabilities. The data given and synthesized from the interviews reinforced
our project’s proposed goals. Results from the interview process are included in Appendix 2.

Benchmarking
Having a frame of reference for a website is fundamental. To benchmark, we considered
crucial elements for each website as proposed by Kimberley Grabas in her article “11 Author
Website Must Have Elements.” By comparing the website of Suzanne Collins to the websites of
other popular authors, it was realized how much is clearly lacking.
When comparing the websites, we selected those of Stephen King, J.K. Rowling,
Stephanie Meyer, Ransom Riggs, Veronica Roth, and Meg Cabot, all of which are relatively
famous authors of young adult literature. We looked at the following elements that could be
included on an author’s website: good first impression, an about/bio page, contact information,
email registration/updates, testimonials, social media, books/products/services, a blog, upcoming
events/latest news, press page/media kit, and bonuses/extras (Grabas, 2013). After comparing
each author’s respective website to the one created for Suzanne Collins, it was concluded that the
website was in desperate need of redesigning. Only two of the suggested elements were found
(biography and testimonials). Several elements are displayed poorly, while many are missing.
Further evidence is listed in the Benchmarking table provided in Appendix 3.
Personas/Scenarios
Based on the major user groups (young readers, their parents/guardians, authors of young
adult literature, and adult readers) four personas, with examples listed below, were created to
detail the types of visitors that may visit the website for Suzanne Collins.

Persona 1 [Parent of Young Reader]:

Helen Lewis is a 45-year-old mother of 3,
whose oldest daughter, Ellie (age 14), loves The
Hunger Games. She is interested in books with
strong female characters as a role model for her
daughter.
Scenario: Helen notices that Ellie is very
interested in reading and would like to
encourage her to do more. Helen also notices
that Ellie has started to feel self-conscious about
her appearance and her intelligence. Helen
looks for books with strong female characters
for Ellie to relate to and/or admire. Helen
comes across the Suzanne Collins website and
tries to learn more about The Hunger Games
Trilogy.
Persona 2 [Adult Reader]:

Stephen Wright is a 32-year-old software
developer who loves science fiction and is
looking for a new series to read.
Scenario: Stephen has been an avid reader of
science fiction since his youth. Although he is
very busy with his career, he still likes to escape
from the real world into a well-written story. He
is always checking online and at the library for
the latest releases of science fiction books. When
he hears about a new series called The Hunger
Games, he investigates the series further and
decides to go to the author’s website to learn
more about her and her works.
Persona 3 [Young Reader]:
(Pazham, 2013)
Garrett Parker is a 12-year-old student at
Hometown Middle School. While in summer
camp this year he started reading the Underland
series. Although he doesn’t live in a big city, he
quickly related to Gregor’s imagination.
Scenario: Garrett has read two of the books about
Gregor. When he is assigned a book report he
chooses the book Gregor and the Underland by
Suzanne Collins. Part of the report must be about
the author, so he goes online to Suzanne Collins’
website to learn more.

Persona 4 [Writer of Young Adult
literature]:

Kenzie Guinn is 25-years-old with a Bachelor's of
Arts degree and has been writing young adult
fiction since her teens. Although she has not
formally published any of her work, she has
submitted several fan-fiction manuscripts to
websites.
Scenario: Kenzie’s real-life responsibilities don’t
permit her to become a full-time author. She still
spends most of her free time writing and scouring
other authors’ sites looking for ideas. She
religiously reads her favorite authors’ blogs. She
has become a member of all their sites and
receives any mailings they provide. Whenever an
author she follows is appearing near her town,
she makes every effort to attend the event.
Site Redesign Structure
Current Design
The current website for Suzanne Collins is basic in its overall design. Currently, there are
only four global navigation headings (Home, Works, Bio, and Interview). There is no searching
feature, awards and reviews are placed sporadically, and there is empty white space. The
“Home” page (see Figure 1) includes one picture of Suzanne Collins, very little information
about her, some book title images, some awards, a few reviews, and many design flaws. The
“Works” page (see Figure 2) includes photos of each work and a summary. The current “Bio”
page contains a small picture of Suzanne Collins accompanied by a five-paragraph entry
detailing her 25-year literary career: from her beginnings at Nickelodeon, to her ascension in
becoming one of the bestselling authors in the nation. The “Interview” page takes users to a page
that lists thirteen questions, which were answered by the author. To view the current

By clicking on the “home” page (Figure 1), the viewer is taken to a landing page where
there is a welcome message from Suzanne Collins, a picture of her, and several of her works:
“The Hunger Games: Mockingjay”; “Year of the Jungle”; and “Mockingjay.” Each page of the
website is linked to a section that contains “selected works” such as: “Year of the Jungle,”
“Mockingjay” and “Catching Fire.” By clicking on any of the title’s links in the selected works’
section, there are synopses of the works by book reviewers including School Library Journal,
Midwest Book Review, and Kirkus Reviews.

of Suzanne Collins’ works, with a brief description of each. When clicking on an image beside
each work’s descriptions, users are not taken to another page detailing more information
regarding the work or a place in which to buy the item.

the author, view social media, purchase anything, have discussions, rate/review works, write/post
fan-fiction, enter fan contests, see latest events, or see more than one photo. This design is very
limited in content and capability.

New Design
The proposed redesign for Suzanne Collins’s website is detailed in Figures 4-12.
Figure 4 shows a blueprint for the redesign, which includes the following new global navigation
headings: Home, Bio, News & Events, Works, Store, Blog, and Message Board.
Figure 5 represents a detailed blueprint for the Login or Sign Up page, as well as the which
functions require login and steps required to create an account.
Figure 6 details the blueprint for the created “Store” page, which includes many items and works
for sale directly from Suzanne Collins’s website.
Figure 7 includes a task-oriented blueprint for the created “Discussion Post” added feature.
Figure 8 is a visual showing the redesigned “Home” page. The global navigation has been
expanded to incorporate more of the content areas of the site, providing context for users when
navigating.
Figure 9 shows a visual representation of the proposed design for the created “Store” page.
Figure 10 shows the wireframe for the newly created “Message Board” page, which helps users
to connect with one another through communication in one determined location.
Figure 11 shows a wireframe for the redesigned “Bio” page of Suzanne Collins.
Figure 12 shows the wireframe for the page where users are directed to when they decide to
create an account.

Task Description for Discussion Post
Assumptions: The site visitor is not currently a member of the site. They must sign up for
membership to be able to post to the Discussion Board.
Step 1 Sign up for Membership
From the home page, the site visitor selects to sign up for a membership. The site visitor can
continue to fill out the form or cancel and return to the home page.
The site visitor fills out the Sign-Up Form. If an invalid entry occurs, they are notified in the
field and can make changes. They are also able to cancel and return to the home page.
Step 2 Review Terms & Conditions
When the sign-up form is submitted, the site visitor must agree to the terms and conditions of the
membership. They can select that they agree or they are able to select cancel. If they select to
cancel they are returned to the sign form.
When the form is completed and the terms and conditions accepted, the site visitor will receive a
confirmation of their membership.
Step 3 Select Book Discussion Page
The member can select the book discussion page of their choice. Note that this page would have
been visible to the site visitor before logging in as a member.
The member selects the Topic “Catching Fire” from the list of Book Discussions. They can
cancel and return to the Book Discussion page.
The member selects to make a post in the “Parade” discussion area. They can cancel and they
will be returned to the Topic page.
Step 4 Enter Post
The member can enter a new post. They are also able to save the post as a draft and continue
making changes to it. They are also able to cancel and return to the post subject page.

The redesigned “Homepage” (Figure 8) of SuzanneCollinsBooks.com significant changes
should be made to both the content and the layout of the author’s website. The redesigned global
navigation has been expanded to include seven categories and is located prominently in the
center of an image banner at the top of the page. The categories that can be found in the upper

global navigation are as follows: Home, Bio, News & Events, Works, Store, Blog, Message
Boards. The upper left-hand corner of the page has a link back to the homepage, while the upper
right-hand corner has the “search” utility tool and a “Log-in or Sign-up” button. Information
about memberships benefits can be easily found by clicking the banner directly below the global
navigation menu. The main content of the homepage can be found below the “Membership
Benefits Banner” and contains boxes that contain some of the highlights of the second level
pages of the site. Also included on the homepage is a portal to the author’s Twitter feed, as well
as trailers for the different Hunger Games movies. Below the main content section of the
homepage is an extended version of the global navigation located in the footer. This includes two
additional categories: FAQ and Contact. Located below the lower global navigation bar are links
to three of the author’s social media accounts: Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.
When comparing the current and new designs, the location of the content on the redesigned
site is easily more recognizable and accessible. The placement of the content areas on the
original site caused confusion, as it was difficult to differentiate where the different content areas
existed. Each content area on the new site includes links to a second level page, which contains
additional information on the subject, which was lacking on the original site.

The added “store” page (Figure 9) on SuzanneCollinsBooks.com uses three different
means for providing users with a sense of place within the overall site. First, there is a store
banner just below the global navigation bar that alerts users to the intent of the page. Secondly,
there is a breadcrumb navigation tool in the upper left-hand corner of the content section to help
users navigate back through the site. Lastly, the “Store” label within the global navigation is
larger than those of the other categories. Regarding the major navigation features of the page, the
“store” uses the same global navigation system as the rest of the pages on the site. However,
there is a noticeable difference as there is a vertical local navigation bar to the left of the content
section of the page. The local navigation bar includes a list of merchandise categories and
subcategories so that users can find the products that they are looking for more efficiently. The
main “store” page lists products that are broken down into thematic categories (New Releases,
Most Popular, etc.), and contains a scroll bar to view these products. For viewing the user’s
shopping cart or checking-out, there is a button in the upper right-hand corner of the “Store”
banner that provides access to these functions. Lastly, just below the “Store” banner is a link
that directs users to more information about SuzanneCollinsBooks.Com memberships.

The “message board” page (see Figure 10) shares the same global and local navigation
layout as the “store” page, in that the global navigation is located horizontally at the top of the
page, while the local navigation is located vertically on the left side of the content area. Also,
like the “store” page, there are three different means of providing users with a sense of place

within the overall site (1. “Message Boards’ banner, breadcrumbs, and enlarged global
navigation label). The middle of the content area includes a box that provides content relating to
the message board. To the right of the main content box are two different elements that enrich
the user’s experience. First, the “Members Online” box allows users to view other members
participating on the message boards, as well as providing the ability to access each user’s
individual member page by clicking on their screen name. The “Newest Posts” element provides
the same access to user’s individual pages as the “Members Online” page, however users can
also view the message post.

By looking at Figure 11, the redesigned “Bio” page includes many upgrades from the
current design. Underneath the author’s name, there is a banner of photos, which can be scrolled

through. There is also an option to “see all photos” which will direct that users to the full
photography gallery. Beneath the photos, there would be a detailed biography listing important
life events and information related to Suzanne Collins. Adjacent to her biographical information,
there is a designated area for her “awards and honors,” which can be scrolled through as to see
them all in one concentrated place. Underneath the “awards and honors,” users can click on the
“Printable Book List” PDF. By downloading that document, users can see a list of all authored
works by Suzanne Collins, as well as the series order and publication dates for each selective
title.
Near the bottom, there is a “subscribe” banner which will allow users to enter their email address
and register to receive newsletters, which will include information related to news, events,
contests, top blog posts, and other elements that might be of interest. Members can also
automatically be subscribed to email newsletters during the creation of the account. Upon
clicking “create an account,” users are directed to a “terms and conditions” page, which they
must accept before completion. On that page, there will also be an option for members to
automatically receive newsletters to the email address they provided. If at any time they want to
change the option, he or she may visit their account settings to make that change.
The redesign goals have been met for the biography page, as there are more pictures to view, as
well as having a concentrated place to include awards, honors, and a book list. The social media
links are present on each page so users will have instant access to Suzanne Collins’s Twitter,
Facebook, and Instagram pages. By including breadcrumbs, users can tell how they arrived at
that page. The global navigation allows people to navigate throughout all elements of the website
with ease, and in no order.

This created page (Figure 12) has a section that details the many benefits of becoming a member,
as well as an attractive graphic to grab the attention of the user. Underneath the information,
users will be able to enter information and create his or her account. They may browse and
upload a profile photo from their device, select a username, register with an email address, and

create a password to accompany the username for login purposes. Users are also instructed to
enter their date of birth, as well as completing a CAPTCHA to prove that he or she is not a robot.
By clicking on the button labeled “Create Account” users will be directed to accept “terms and
conditions” as well as select whether he or she would like to automatically receive emailed
newsletters.
To reach more subscribers, there is an included “subscribe to newsletters” banner, which
provides a space for users to enter their email address to receive e-newsletters, which provide
information related to events, new arrivals, contests, coupons, and more. At the bottom, the same
navigation links from the top are provided, as well as “FAQ” and “Contact Us.” Users are also
able to find the social media links on the icons at the bottom of the pages.
The Suzanne Collins website redesign goals for creating an account have been realized. Upon
visiting the “create an account” page, users will know what can be done with an account, how to
sign up, and what elements are required to complete registration. Users are also able to register to
receive emailed newsletters. That registration is complete in only two steps - entering the email
address desired and clicking “subscribe.” Registration for email newsletters can also be done
during the process of completing an account, as there is an option available for users before
accepting “terms and conditions” after clicking “create an account” on the “sign up” page. Once
account creation has been completed, users are able to post on the discussion board, play games,
rate books and products, and enjoy other benefits given to members.

Usability Testing
Problem Statement
The current design for Suzanne Collins’s website has several problems. Now, there is
limited content and biographical information, users are unable to truly interact with the site, and
there is no way to purchase items. With the present layout, visitors to the site are unable to
become members and there is little to no reason for site visitors to return. Modern standards are
not being adequately represented, especially considering the features, functionalities, and content
displayed.
Testing Objectives
The successes and/or failures of the redesigned website for Suzanne Collins will be
measured by the following testing objectives:
• Prove that the user can become a member.
• Prove that the user can purchase merchandise.
• Prove that the user can view all images.
• Prove that the user can view the events.
• Prove that the user can download the printable book list.
• Prove that the user can subscribe to e-newsletters.
• Prove that the user can post comments.
• Prove that the user can submit fanfiction.
• Prove that the user can navigate through content without confusion.
Methodologies and Testing Environments
To maximize usability efforts, the redesign team has designed three usability tests to
measure the effectiveness of the website redesign.
1. Focus Group - A focus group, consisting of at least 15 members, will be placed into a
room, which contains three different stations. The first station consists of computer desks,
while the second station includes touch-screen tablets. The third station will have cellular
phones, both iOS and Android operating systems. Each participant will spend 30 minutes
per station interacting with the redesigned www.suzannecollinsbooks.com. Prior to
moving to the next station, participants are instructed to join their other station members
at their respective stations in a discussion (consisting of 15-30 minutes), which will
include having a dialogue describing the likes and dislikes of the website. The cycle will
repeat until each participant has had the chance to visit all three stations. The redesign
team will be sitting in another room, viewing and listening to the focus group usability
test. The results of the focus group activities will be compiled and analyzed. Any changes
resulting from the focus group will be made on an as-needed basis.
2. Ease of Use Experiment - At least 15 participants (5 persons on each of the following:
computers, touch screen tablets, and cellular phones) will engage in an ease of use
experiment. Each participant will be tested independently. For each experiment, the

participants will be handed a list of tasks, like a “scavenger hunt,” which can be finished
by visiting www.suzannecollinsbooks.com and using the redesigned website. Each
function task listed with have an allotted amount of time, as well as a maximum amount
of mouse clicks/screen interactions, unbeknownst to the participant and kept private by
the proctor. If the participant completes each task in a timely manner with a minimum
number of clicks, then the experiment will be proven a success. Results will be
considered heavily and changes will be made to the redesign on an as-needed basis.
3. Closed Card Sorting - Closed card sorting will give the design team an idea of how users
may organize the website’s labeling scheme. There will be at least 20 participants tested
independently for the purposes of individual perspectives. First, each user will be given
some cards which represents the site’s high-level categories, created during the redesign
process. Also included are cards which include different content items from the website.
Each person will be asked to organize the cards in such a way that each content card is
paired with the most applicable high-level category, determined by the participant him or
herself with no outside input. The design team will then analyze results and reevaluate
the organization of the site’s architecture pending unfavorable results.
Evaluation
After the usability tests have been completed, the redesign team will use the data
collected to determine the successes or failures of the redesign implementations. The focus group
and card sorting testing observations will be listed and analyzed, by considering both recurrences
and degrees of sensibility. For the “Ease of Use” experiment, if 80% of the testing objectives
were completed in the predetermined amount of time and mouse clicks/screen interactions
allotted, then the current design will be considered successful to both the redesign and the
webmaster.

To gather information regarding what users thought about proposed alterations to the
website of Suzanne Collins, a survey was taken by 26 participants through a link shared on social
media. Each survey participant had the option to choose one of the following regarding each
question: yes, or no, strongly agree, agree, disagree, or strongly disagree. The options “strongly
agree” and “agree” indicated a “yes” response, while “disagree” and “strongly disagree”
indicated a “no” response. Below are the results of the survey broken down into responses by
