SEMESTER EXCHANGE IN AVEIRO study for one semester at portugal's leading university UNIVERSIDADE DE AVEIRO Created in 1973, the University of Aveiro has quickly become one of the most dynamic and innovative universities in Portugal. As public foundation operating under private law, it develops its mission to provide undergraduate and postgraduate education, to generate research and to promote cooperation with society. UA has achieved a significant position amongst higher education institutions in Portugal, being one of the top universities regarding the quality of its infrastructures, the strength of its research and the excellence of its staff. It is attended by some 15,000 students. Location Aveiro is located in the central coastal region of Portugal, about two hours driving distance north of Lisbon. Aveiro is surrounded by a distinctive delta called the Vouga Delta, better known as Ria de Aveiro. Aveiro is served by excellent rail and road connections to Lisbon and to the inland towns as well as to the close by cities of Oporto and Coimbra. Sá Carneiro international airport, which is less than 1 hour away, provides convenient connections throughout Europe. Accommodation Exchange students receive help from the International Office to find accommodation in one of the University Halls of Residence. For students who do not live at the Universi- ty Halls there are other options. With the help of the Erasmus Student Network (ESN), many students look for flats close to the campus or in the nearby city centre. Typical prices for student accommodation range from €180 to €250 per month. Living costs As an estimate, a student in Aveiro will need somewhere between €550 and €600 per month for accommodation, eating, transport, study material and other basic expenses. Visas Non-EU students should check whether they need a visa and a residence permit. Students make their visa request in their home country, at the Portuguese consulate, before travelling to Portugal. Student Life Students at UA have a lot of support from the University and from each other. The Students Union and the University Social Services provide shops, advice centres, medical care, sports facilities and entertain- ment. · Visiting Students - EUR 1500,00

· Fee waivers may apply in the case of student

exchange schemes like Erasmus.

· Students wishing to do a single course unit

from an Exchange Package can opt to apply

for “isolated course units” where the fees

range from €40,00 - €60.00 per ECTS credit,

depending on subject area.

COURSE UNITS

· 47555 Energy and environment

(6,0 ECTS)

The understanding of the energy-environment

relation is essential to perceive the meaning of

the concept of sustainable development. For

that purpose, at first it is intended to provide a

look at the World, European and national

energy scenarios. Sustainable development

and, in particular, the global climatic change

issues are discussed, and environmental policy

instruments are presented, namely fundamen-

tal conventions as the Kyoto Protocol, and

documents as the EU Green Paper for Energy.

Then, the fundamental concepts of energy,

entropy and exergy, together with their

interrelations, are analysed and integrated in

thermo-economic concepts.

· 47512 Conversion of conventional energies

(6,0 ECTS)

This course approaches in an integrated

manner the following subjects: energy and

energy resources; energy conversion; use of

fuels during energy conversion processes;

energy conversion technologies. At the end of

the course, the student should be able to

analyse in a broad sense the problems

associated with energy resources and energy

conversion particularly in technologies,

efficiency and pollutants emissions; charac-

terize the fundamental properties of fuels;

define a methodology and select and design

in conceptual terms the equipment required

for a given energy conversion process;

calculate emissions and define processes per

pollutants abatement; define the operating

parameters of a given equipment; define and

analyse the performance of a given energy

conversion equipment.

· 47610 Energy management (6,0 ECTS)

This course deals with planning and operation

of energy-related production and consumption

units. Therefore, the main goal of this course is

to use the knowledge of environmental

management, production management,

logistics, energy and other established

scientific areas in order to analyse energetically

different technological processes in the quality

of energy consumers and producers.

(choose one of the two following course units)

· 47559 Energy, mobility and transports

(6,0 ECTS)

The course Energy, Mobility and Transporta-

tion has as main objectives the comprehen-

sion of the present situation of the transporta-

tion sector in terms of energy and environ-

ment; the identification of the main propulsion

technologies (conventional and alternatives)

on the different transportation modes; the use

numerical modelling tools to calculate

pollutant emissions and fuel consumption; the

analyse of problems of urban mobility and

identify solutions for a sustainable mobility in

terms of energy and environment and the

identification of alternative fuels and

alternative propulsion technologies.

· 40498 Industrial ecology (6,0 ECTS)

The course in Industrial ecology includes the

full analysis of material and energy flows

through industrial systems, what factors

influence these flows, and how environmental

impacts can be reduced. This course’s focus

is on state-of-the-art methods for environ-

mental systems analysis and strategies for

policy and management, as well as on the

application of such strategies and methods to

critical systems. The skills to be developed by

the students includes the understanding of

the relationship between production,

consumption, sustainability and industrial

ecology and the application of industrial

ecology quantitative analytical methods.

Option 2

(choose one of the two following course units)

· 47761 Energy Systems Project (6,0 ECTS)

In the Energy system project the students

are assigned a design project, which will

involve application and acquisition of

advanced knowledge on energy, system

engineering, design and Computational

Mechanics. A presentation and a project

report are to be delivered.

· 43821 Environmental Systems Modelling

(6,0 ECTS)

The objectives of the course of Modelling

Environmental Systems are learning: (i) the

method for modelling system dynamics; (ii)

the use of a computer program for modelling

system dynamics; (iii) elementary tools and

techniques for the analysis of continuous

systems. Therefore, at the end of the course,

the students are should be able to: (i) build

models of environmental systems; (ii) use

computer programs to investigate the

behaviour of environmental systems models;

(iii) describe simple continuous systems in

terms of their feedback structures; (iv) apply

elementary tools and techniques for the

analysis of continuous systems; (v) withdraw

conclusions on the structure/behaviour of the

models and modify them in order to reach

alternative goals.
