1. Introduction
1.1. The VE-Toolkits
The IES VE-Toolkits are a set of analyses that can be run to help influence and direct early stage
building designs. These fast analyses can be run with basic model inputs to allow indicative
assessment of design options taking into account climate, building fabric, energy & carbon, thermal
loads, daylighting and solar shading. Further options offer an assessment of the potential for Low or
Zero Carbon technologies and water reduction.
Using the VE-Toolkits for LEED the building model can be appraised against LEED credits to give an
indicative result based on credits that cover daylighting, comfort, water and Renewables.
1.2. Access
The VE-Toolkits can be accessed from the IES <VE> plug-ins for Google SketchUp and Autodesk
Revit.
The IES Toolbar in each plug-in has a VE-Toolkits button that will launch the Toolkits dialog.

3. Sustainability VE-Toolkit
The Sustainability VE-Toolkit is divided over two tabs; Overview and Sustainability.
The Overview tab can be used to give a greater understanding of the implications of the building
location by understating climate and uses this information to offer guidance on building fabric design,
materials and potential strategies for further investigation.
The Sustainability tab allows early stage analysis of Energy and Carbon emissions, Heating and
Cooling Loads, solar shading and daylight assessment and Water and Low or Zero Carbon
Technologies reviews based on building design and simple inputs.

3.1. Overview
Climate Metrics
Allows analysis of climate data for the location and summarises relevant metrics related to climate
that play a key role in understanding buildings and design responses. Output on ASHRAE/Koeppen-
Geiger climate classification, temperature, moisture/humidity, wind, precipitation, solar energy, diurnal
swing and Mahoney comfort stress analysis.
Sustainability Toolkit
VE 6.3 VE-Toolkits 8
Climate Index
A building independent rating created by IES. It provides designers with perspective on the potential
the climate has to affect the amount of energy a building needs to achieve occupant comfort. Heating,
cooling, humidification and dehumidification energy is explored. The output report includes global
comparison and breakdown of potential energy types.
Natural Resources
Building design and climate are interrogated to provide a report giving an indication of the potential
scale that solar energy, wind energy and rainwater resources could impact on the design.
Building Metrics
Allows an advanced understanding of the key characteristics of the building. Report includes
classification of skin or internally driven loads, surface area to volume ratios, glazing areas and
orientation, breakdown of solar and casual loads, thermal mass and natural ventilation form.
Materials Review
Report provides a summary of the materials used in the building includes predominant types and
potential impact of waste in the construction process.

3.2. Analysis
Energy/Carbon Simulation
Dynamic thermal simulation is run on the building model and report generated gives whole building
energy and carbon results (including comparison with 2030 Challenge benchmark), energy
breakdown by usage, monthly carbon emissions, room comfort levels (max/min temperature, humidity
and PPD) and peak room loads.

solar shading and advanced solar penetration.
Water Review
Water review allows the investigation of potential ways the building design may benefit from water
reduction and through use of waste water technologies.
To define water usage (based on occupancy and fixtures) in the building and any waste water
technologies in use click the Edit appliance data button. Select the regulatory system (options are
LEED-USA, BREEAM, Greenstar or LEED-INDIA) then make changes in the Water Uses dialog.
The report generated will give results on overall consumption (with breakdown by end usage) and
water scarcity for the proposed and baseline designs. Water reduction and waste technologies are
reviewed and compared to give levels of effectiveness.

Heating and Cooling Loads
Perform CIBSE or ASHRAE Loads calculations.
Select method from the options before running the
calculation.
The output graphically reports peak heating and cooling loads, loads split per usage and air flow
rates. There is also tabular display of breakdown of loads for each HVAC system and each room in
the building.
Solar Shading
Create an animation showing solar shading across the building including effects of local shading
devices.
Edit settings to change time of year results are
displayed for and alter the azimuth and altitude of the
camera view.
Daylight Assessment
Daylighting calculation is performed on the model to measure light penetration into the building
through external windows (advanced option also measures penetration through internal openings).
Select quality of calculation:
Simple – light is only measured through external windows
Advanced – light is measured passing through internal openings
Note: advanced calculations can take significantly longer to run.

Rooms can be included/excluded from the calculation as desired by
using the Edit spaces in analysis button to access the Spaces in
analysis dialog.
The report shows total daylight illumination and daylight factor for all
rooms in the analysis and gives this as a % of floor area over the
fixed threshold 300lex (25 f.c.). Room by room breakdown allows
the rooms that are performing badly and are poorly lit to be
highlighted to help improve building design.
Low/Zero Carbon Technologies
Assess potential benefits from including Renewables and low-carbon technologies in the building.
These are related to simulation results and put in context of delivered Energy and carbon emission
mitigation and savings.
Select the Edit LZCT Data button to input details of any renewables, low carbon and green power
technologies that may be included in the building and to define Energy costs for the region that will be
used to calculate savings.
