Sustainability StudiesMajorING IN SuStaINabIlIty StudIeS The Sustainability Studies major focuses on the relationship between human beings and the natural world. Students in this program are prepared to pursue employment and graduate study in sustainable economic development (such as ecotourism and energy independence), maintenance of healthy communities (water quality and green space design), and environmental conservation. The program is designed to complement and facilitate dual study with several other majors at D&E, including Business, Economics, Hospitality, Adventure Recreation, English, Biology and Environmental Science.

Why Davis & Elkins College?D&E is a private liberal arts institution located in the mountain highlands of West Virginia. We offer small classes (with a student-faculty ratio of 16:1) taught by extraordinary faculty dedicated to your academic success. The Sustainability Studies major is committed to both interdisciplinary and experiential explorations of sustainable development and sustainability–the challenge of meeting needs of the present (such as health, energy, food, shelter, and transportation) while ensuring a viable world for future generations. Sustainability Studies is an interdisciplinary major that includes coursework in Natural Sciences, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Social Sciences, Humanities, Adventure Recreation, as well as community service. Sustainability Studies students have recently had a variety of great hands-on experiences, ranging from red spruce restoration in Canaan Valley and creating a micro-farm in an urban setting, to working on “green” projects both on and off campus and conducting research abroad. D&E’s Center for Sustainability Studies (or CSS) was created to inspire both the academic and experiential explorations of sustainable development and sustainability. The CSS has been successful in securing grants for community agriculture, recycling and composting efforts, solar and energy efficiency projects, and student internships and research -- most recently from the National Resources Conservation Service, U.S. Fish

and Wildlife Service, the WV Department of Agriculture and the WV Department of Environmental Protection.

Active LearningThe professional environment in which Davis & Elkins College is located offers Sustainability Studies students a wide range of possible internships. The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, the U.S. Forest Service, The Nature Conservancy and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service all have offices in Elkins. The Monongahela National Forest, Blackwater Falls State Park, Canaan Valley State Park, Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge and the Bowden Fish Hatchery are nearby. Students learn about internship opportunities through the Center for Sustainability Studies, in partnership with the College’s Office of Career Services, and often find related community projects for their senior capstone experience. Internships not only equip students for a position in their area of interest, they also test and confirm genuine interests in particular fields, and contribute to strong resumés when students seek employment. Recent seasonal internships have included positions with The Nature Conservancy, The Randolph County Community Agriculture Program, The Highland Meadows Program and the US Forest Service.
