That is why we place great importance on the defi nition and implementation
of an ambitious sustainability strategy, for which Spadel is recognised as a
European leader. Because opting for a quality product like Brecon Carreg is also a
sustainable choice.
Franck Lecomte,General Manager, Brecon Carreg Spadel UK
Sustainability is one of the strategic pillars of Spadel. To secure our position as a leader, we have developed ambitious sustainability targets across all of our brands, including Brecon Carreg, which we plan to achieve through eight platforms, linked to concrete action plans.
Responsible and sustainable choices

• In 2014, the Spadel Group was awarded ‘Gold’ in the Ecovadis classifi cation. This rating defi nes our CSR performance around four themes (Environment, Social, Ethical and Suppliers) on a scale from 1 to 100. In its sector, Spadel ranks high on the list for each category, with a total score of 71/100, well above the industry average of 41/100. This places Spadel in the top 2% of all assessed enterprises.
• In 2014, the Spadel Group received the ‘Ruban d’honneur’ (badge of honor) in the ‘Environmental & Corporate Sustainability’ category of the prestigious European Business Awards. This ranks Spadel among Europe’s top 10 companies in the Sustainable Development category.
Awards and recognitions
• The Sustainable Development Charter is Wales’ highest profi le commitment to sustainable development and is a Welsh government initiative, aimed at improving the economic, social, environmental and cultural wellbeing of Wales. Being proudly Welsh, Brecon Carreg has demonstrated its commitment to a more sustainable Wales by signing the sustainable development charter, supporting the journey towards sustainability.
• Brecon Carreg has been independently accredited by the Ethical Company Organisation, after a detailed study focusing on environment, animals and people. Thanks to the high score of 90 out of 100, our brand is enlisted in The Good Shopping Guide.
Platform 3 Responsible sourcing
Our three biggest suppliers (PET and bottle caps suppliers and haulier) account for more than 80% of the total purchases of Brecon Carreg. They are all based locally in Wales and have signed our Sustainability Procurement Policy. Moreover, Ecovadis, as a third party, assesses the sustainability endeavors of all our strategic suppliers.

Our 2020 goal: Water footprint ≤ 1.6 litre to produce one litre of bottled water Brecon Carreg continuously invests in projects to reduce its water footprint. A separated drainage and purifi cation system has been installed to process the four types of water usage in the production facility:
• process water used to rinse the bottles • water used for cleaning purposes• backwash water from a fi ltering process• domestic water
The Water Exploitation Index (WEI) is a measure of the ratio between average annual water abstraction versus average annual water supply in a given area. For Brecon Carreg, the Water Exploitation Index is, at ~1,5 % well below the 10% threshold specifi ed by the European Environmental Agency.
If we feel responsible for the world around us, then we also have to do the same with regards to our internal team and ensure their welfare and wellbeing.
Brecon Carreg supports its employees’ journey towards a healthier lifestyle by off ering them 25% off their chosen gym membership, a Bike2Work scheme and complimentary entry to running events. As part of the annual company event we include advice on healthy choices and wellbeing.
Platform 8 Responsible partner for society
Platform 1
Our water begins as rain falling on the hills and valleys of the Brecon Beacons National Park, an area of outstanding natural beauty covering approximately 21,000 acres of Wales. Year after year, it streams, trickles and fi lters through the dense layers of limestone strata, being naturally purifi ed and gaining its unique taste and mineral content along the way.
In cooperation with the local authorities and national park administration, protection and prevention actions are put in place to sustainably protect the sources and the catchment area and to prevent all risk of pollution.
Platform 2 Natural products
Our 2020 goal: 100% of our products labelled ‘natural’
The still and sparkling waters of Brecon Carreg are by defi nition natural beverages. The soft drinks and fl avoured waters of the Spadel Group are all being developed based on natural ingredients.
Our 2020 goal: Carbon neutrality
We are working in several areas to achieve this ambitious objective as the Spadel Group. Through a comprehensive analysis of the life cycle, we have identifi ed the aspects that contribute signifi cantly to our carbon footprint.
Reduction of energy consumption
Through various investments and initiatives, Brecon Carreg has reduced the amount of energy used to produce one litre of bottled water by 34% over the last 10 years. Moreover, only green electricity is used at the production site.
As a socially responsible company, we at Brecon Carreg take into account the social dimension
of our activities. We are driven in this regard by a social ambition: respect for water and people.
There are two sources and two springs at Brecon Carreg. The natural mineral water of Brecon Carreg originates from the source named ‘Carreg’ inspired by Carreg Cennen Castle, the spectacular ruins nearby.
Brecon Carreg is from the heart of Wales and proud of its heritage. Therefore, we support our local community and Wales with contributions and projects. Here are a few examples:
• Two open days in 2014 and 2015 have enabled us to further build our relationship with local authorities and our communities.
• We provide wireless broadband to a remote part of Wales by erecting a mast and sharing it with the broadband provider at no cost.
• We let most of the 88 hectares we own to local farmers on which to graze their sheep and provide water to our neighbour all free of charge.
• We have contributed to improve the shared road we use to transport our products.
• Brecon Carreg endeavours to support key Welsh events promoting our heritage i.e.
The Royal Welsh Show and the National Eisteddfod.
Our 2020 goal: Contribute to a healthy lifestyle through hydration and balanced diets

Sustainable packaging policy
• All bottles are 100% recyclable.• Brecon Carreg is working
continuously on making its bottles lighter. In the last 15 years we have reduced the weight of our packaging by 30%.
Improvement of logistics
By palletising our bottles more eff ectively, we have been able to reduce the number of delivery vehicle journeys per year by 30.
A new IT system allows our haulier to scan the weight of each pallet so that the trucks are fi lled even more effi ciently. The haulier is also committed to improving their environmental impact and over 90% of their fl eet has been updated to Euro V vehicles over the last decade. We continue to collaborate with our haulier on initiatives to minimise the carbon footprint due to transport.
Our 2020 goal: 100% responsible sourcing
Sustainable water management & biodiversity
We aim to build an organisation where employees enjoy work and are constantly encouraged and stimulated to improve their individual and collective performance.
A satisfaction survey, independently conducted by ICMA, shows great job satisfaction among employees
throughout Spadel Group and particularly at Brecon Carreg. Our last survey revealed an impressive

• Brecon Carreg promotes healthy lives through running. Our partnerships include elite Welsh Athletics and social running groups via Run Wales suitable for all ages and abilities.
• Together with Recycle for Wales and Run 4 Wales, we delivered a #RunRecycle campaign to promote recycling plastic bottles at the World Half Marathon Championships in 2016.
CO2 Neutral
Spadel has set the target to reduce the carbon footprint by 20% between 2010 and 2015. This goal was acheived for the most part thanks to our own eff orts (15%), while the remainder (5%) was gained by using compensation from carbon off setting. As all Spadel sites, Brecon Carreg has received the “CO2 Neutral” label for its neutrality on scope 1 and 2. The target for 2020 remains the same: To achieve the full carbon emissions neutrality for scope 1, 2 and 3.
