Sustainability [suh-stey-nuh-bil-i-tee]

noun The quality of not being harmful to the environment or depleting natural resources, thereby

supporting long-term ecological balance.

What is a Biosphere Eco-City?

The Biosphere Eco-City (BEC) is an urban-centred region where people and organizations

demonstrate how to make their city more sustainable through individual initiative,

cooperation and sharing of information. Biosphere means “sphere of life” and it is the Earth’s

outer shell of land, water and atmosphere that supports all life. EcoCity is an international

movement for sustainable cities that began 25 years ago.

Colonel By’s Sustainability Plan

The creation of this plan was simple. Sixteen student leaders volunteered to learn more about

sustainable practices. After being trained on how to lead discussion groups, these leaders ran

workshops in eight classes, where junior CB students contributed their ideas about

“sustainability” issues, as well as possible solutions and implementation strategies.

Group leaders gathered these ideas, then consolidated and organized them - with the end

result being this document.

Page 3: Sustainability Plan - Obecobec-evbo.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Colonel-By... · 2018. 3. 10. · EcoCity is an international movement for sustainable cities that began 25 years

It is intended that this plan of action be used in the school community for years to come. A

more sustainable world can be achieved by using these guidelines as inspiration for possible

project ideas, and by detailing ways to tackle them effectively. A price range and rough time

frame is also given in order to keep track of progress. It is hoped that the entire school and

larger community will become involved with this initiative and its implementation. Starting

here at Colonel By, we can aim to eliminate unsustainable practises by executing projects

which were conceived by individuals with a vested interest in our future; our own student

body!

There is no planet B. The plan that follows was created within the framework of these 10 guiding themes of

sustainability:

Student Testimonials

“Being a part of the creation of Colonel By's first sustainability plan was a tremendous pleasure

and amazing experience. I worked with incredible people in creating this plan and learned a lot about

sustainability, the biosphere and the environment in general. As a school, Colonel By came up with

several ideas and actions that can be implemented as a community, school or at home in order to

maintain a sustainable community and city. The creation of this sustainability plan is a great step

towards making Colonel By a more eco-friendly and sustainable school and I am excited to implement

many of the ideas we have came up with as a group over the following years. It was a pleasure to be a

part of this initiative and I am eager to see how else we can improve our planet.”

- Karen Jiang, gr. 11

“Although Colonel By is home to a countless number of clubs, joining FROGG and creating our

sustainability plan really was a unique experience. I feel that the impact we made, and continue to

make, on the school and community is both significant and real. Being able to work with such a

wonderful group of people did not just teach me leadership and teamwork, but also the importance of

protecting our environment, both on a global and individual level. Knowing this plan will allow our

school to continually develop as an eco-friendly community, I look forward for the years to come.”

- Milong Wang, gr. 12

“Colonel By is my home away from home. It is a place of learning and being able to partake in

new activities. By being a part of FROGG and having the opportunity to create our very own

Sustainability Plan, I finally feel like I’m giving back to a school that provides so much for me. My

school is on its way to becoming a sustainable and eco-friendly environment with the ideas from both

students who have been here for a long time and students who have just stepped through our doors. I

am so proud and thankful for all my peers, teachers/supervisors and members of Ottawa Biosphere

Eco-City Initiative for giving us the opportunity to kickstart a better, greener Colonel By Secondary

School.”

- Tiffany Chen, gr. 11
