• Backcasting from principles is more like chess – we don’t know exactly what success will look like, but we know the principles of checkmate – and we go about playing the game in a strategic ways, always keeping that vision of future success in mind.

ABCD Strategy for Desktop Manufacturing
• Awareness & Visioning:
– A team created with the responsibility of spreading awareness. This team should ensure that the raw materials used for manufacturing purpose are all following the sustainability principles.
– For desktop manufacturing we propose a vision of avoiding raw materials which are extracted from the earth's crust or are built up using the chemicals and compounds produced by the society
– The manufacturing process to have proper safety and environment measures so that we can lower the physical degradation and destruction of nature and natural processes.
– Manufacturing conditions to meet basic human needs
• Baseline Mapping:
– A Canterbury University study reported that the average power use for CRT monitors is 60–75 watts, and about half of that for equivalent-sized LCD displays. As the life of a monitor is directly related to the amount of time it is powered on, turning them off when not in use not only saves electricity but also extends their life
– So for our desktop manufacturing we will take this as an opportunity to improvise the energy consumption by our desktop computers and will emphasize on manufacturing of LCD desktops. An awareness campaign for the same can also be held

• Creative Solutions:– By backcasting on the usage of the product by the society at large, we
can strategize a move to ensure proper disposal of our products under proper compliance measures
– Techniques known as overwriting, degaussing and destruction can be used
• Decide on Priorities:– i) Does this action move us in the right direction?– ii) Can this action be built upon in future?– iii) Does this action bring an acceptable financial, ecological and/or
social return on investment?– This step involves step-by-step implementation and planning
