SUSTAINABILITY

Over seventy years of experience have proved to us that passion and understanding,

combined with hard work both in the vineyards and the winery, are essential to get the utmost

which nature provide. In order to maintain our winery’s growth and to ensure that it may

continue, we have adopted a strategy for both environmental and social sustainability. This

means and enduring commitment, which is now the duty of the whole company to continue to

respect the environment and our responsibility to the greater society.

We have taken on ourselves some important challenges, about which we aim at total

transparency. We shall continue to report on progress as to how we meet these objectives,

relative to our wines and our brands, and how we ensure that our winery continues along an

enduring and sustainable path.

Stay tuned!

50% of emissions associated with a bottle of wine come from the

packaging and transport of glass bottles.

During 2012 Cantine Bonelli made very significant savings in CO2

emissions by reducing the weight of the bottles, as can be seen in this

graph. In 2013 a strategy was planned to reduce the bottles supply

transport distances and to increase the number of bottles with a higher

percentage of recycled materials.

2012 reduced bottle weight by 8.4% of the production

to optimise the fungicides use and guaratee an high quality of the grapes

2013. A brand new Malvasia di Candia aromatica vineyard was planted

according to the rules of sustainability: root stock choice, spacing

organization, drip irrigation, stainless steel poles and wires

The Due Querce (Two Oaks) vineyards of Cantine Bonelli only grow

indigenous varieties, maintaining the natural environment and traditional

wine making. The ground is home to wild flowers and grasses and

treated only with natural fertilizers. The grasses prevent soil erosion and

allow machinery to operate without damaging the ground, even after

heavy rainfall. Parasites and insects are controlled in the most natural

manner possible, so as to cause the minimum of environmental damage

whilst still protecting the vines.

Wineries can consume a lot of water. Cantine Bonelli strictly controls its

water consumption and in 2013 used 46% less water than the European

average. Specifically two projects have contributed to a saving water: the

new bottling line with high technology machines and the abolition of the

reuse of washed bottles. Both these actions considerably reduce the

impact of the winery on the local water systems. The planting and care of

the vineyards is designed to minimize the need for irrigation. Moreover a

questionnaire accomplished in 2013 proved than many grape suppliers do

not irrigate but in case of extreme need.

Cantine Bonelli started its move to organic wines in 2011 by vinifying

organic vines. In 2012 the process moved inside the winery and increased

the company commitment in the respect of nature and preservation of

their territory, the Trebbia valley. The aim is to continue this strategy. In

2013 we have for sale 6,000 bottles of organic Trebbianino Val Trebbia

DOC Colli Piacentini ORGANIC and 8,000 bottles of Barbera DOC Colli

Piacentini ORGANIC.

In 2011 the company installed 448 sq. m of photovoltaic cells on

the winery roof. In 2013 the photovoltaics produced 27% (42,543

Kwh) of the total electrical consumption for the winery (157,086

kwh). A part of that, 31% (19,551 kwh), was given to ENEL and

contributed to increase the national share of renewable energy.

2013 Replacement of a Malvasia di Candia aromatica vine to

optimise costs and management

In 1996 the company bought 7.8 hectares of vineyard at Borghignone di

Carpaneto Piacentino. New vines were planted, the local environment

improved and new local jobs created.

This new venture was very positive and the Due Querce vineyards have

new been increased to 15 hectares, of which 5.5 Ha given to the white

varietals Malvasia and Ortrugo and 9.5 Ha to the reds, Barbera and

Bonarda. In 2013 a new Malvasia di Candia aromatic vine was planted.

events

The company hosts many events at the winery uniting the local

community, wine consumers and friends in the business, reinforcing the

contribution to the area in every sense.

Events focus on art and the art of wine-making, involving painters,

sculptors and musicians. Starting from 2007 we commit in culture with

the annual festival “Earth is the Mother of Wine” which is a huge

success attended by many hundreds. Besides we organize a free summer

concert in the winery courtyard. In 2013 the company introduced its

Sustainability project at the international Fair Vinitaly in Verona. The title

was “Sostenuto assai”.
