EBRD’s Sustainability Awards 2019 – Panel of Judges Mark Hurley is the Head of Planning at WSP. The Planning business is composed of environmental consultants, development experts, development managers, infrastructure specialists, geospatial and land specialists and includes chartered town planners, Fellows of the Royal Geographical Society, consultation experts, transport specialists, master planners, economists as well as maritime and water specialists. Mark is also the executive business leader responsible for WSP’s Manchester presence where he has led WSP’s efforts to support the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, the Mayor’s Green Summit and in making Manchester a Future Ready City. Since entering the consultancy world some 20+ years ago he has been involved in establishing, leading and motivating professional land, environmental, planning and information management teams. He initially joined WSP in 2013 to lead the Environmental discipline which through both acquisition and organic growth went from around 300 people to over 1000 in 5 years, having started his consulting career with Parkman Limited. Now Head of Planning at WSP, Mark is driven to make sure we bring the very best consultancy to bear and he is passionate about recruiting and developing new talent and supports this by chairing WSP’s Professional Growth Network for early career professionals and he has been fortunate to see substantial growth and diversity in both graduate and apprentice recruitment. Mark has worked on many major infrastructure and local authority schemes where securing public engagement, delivering statutory processes including Compulsory Purchase Orders, Development Consent Orders and Hybrid Bills were critical to developing a successful scheme. Geoff Lane is a Partner for PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) LLP in the UK, with responsibility for its work on sustainability and climate change issues. He is part of a team of eight Partners and over 100 full-time staff, working on a range of projects related to sustainable development, climate change and corporate responsibility. In addition to his work with clients, Geoff is also PwC's Liaison Delegate at the World Business Council for Sustainable Development and is a Board member of Earthwatch. Ms. Gulbin Bekit started her finance career in 1992 at STFA Enerkom and later continued as an executive at Garanti Bank from 1995 up until she joined Akfen Holding in 1998, where she is the active CFO as of today. Ms. Bekit is overseeing and managing the project financing and refinancing processes of many investments of Akfen Group companies, as well as acquisitions and disposals and related financing of such operations. In addition to debt and asset management of the Group, she manages public offering, bond and Eurobond issuance, privatization and corporate restructuring processes.During her term of duty in Akfen, she executed and directed a total of 1.4 billion TL bond issuance, 450 m USD Eurobond issuance, 2.1 billion USD project financing, 1.6 billion USD share sale and 354 m USD IPO&SPO operations. Mr Ian Brown is the head of EBRD’s office in Sarajevo, where he leads a team of 15 in the Bank’s Sarajevo Resident Office. He has been in Sarajevo since late 2015, and has seen the Bank’s investment in the country grow from EUR 65 million in 2015 to EUR 200 million in 2018, with projects funded during this time including the first PPP for district heating in the country, with a majority private sector partner leading the investment in a new biomass fired district heating boiler that replaced outdated and heavily polluting heavy fuel oil. In the steel making town of Zenica, in Central Bosnia, a project signed by EBRD in March 2019 will finance, together with a partner commercial bank, the changeover of the coal fired boilers to process gas. This plant provides the heating for the city of Zenica together with the needs of the steel plant, and the project will result in CO2 savings of over 200,000 tonnes.
