At an event geared to tomorrows workforce, the presidentof a local manufacturing firm presented the case for blue col-lar careers .

As a country, you can see that manufacturing is going tobecome more important down the road, ChristopherBarnard, president and chief executive officer of WackerNeuson Corporation, said during opening comments at theManufacturing and Career Expo at Davians in MenomoneeFalls Oct. 9. The company is a leading manufacturing of lightconstruction equipment and compacting machines. ItsAmerican headquarters are located in Menomonee Falls.

The Manufacturing and Career Expo which is organ-ized by the Menomonee Falls, Germantown and Sussexchambers of commerce featured booths from more than 20area manufacturing firms. Students from the MenomoneeFalls, Germantown and Hamilton school districts attended dur-ing sessions on Oct. 10. There was also time set aside for thepublic at large to attend the event.

During his opening comments, Barnard said that every $1in manufacturing produces a multiplier of $1.35. Also accord-ing to data cited by Barnard:

If manufacturing in the United States was a country, itwould be the 10th largest country in the world. The manufac-turing sector in the United States is slightly smaller than Russia

A decision by the Wisconsin State Patrolhas prompted a change in the way the villageof Menomonee Falls will collect leaves t his fall.

The changes were explained by PublicWorks Director Arlyn Johnson during the Oct.7 Village Board meeting.

The village collects leaves in portions ofthe village with curb and gutter to prevent theleaves from clogging sewers. Under the villagepolicy, only leaves are picked up; the villagewill not pick up clipped grass or other lawndebris. Johnson said the leaves are composted

by the village and then used in lawn restora-tion projects.

According to Johnson, the village hadbeen using two trucks that had vacuums mount-ed to collect the leaves. However, there wereaccidents in Sheboygan in November 2011and Neenah in 2012 that involved similar leafcollection trucks, with the 2011 accident killinga person. In both accidents, it was determinedvisibility was a factor, since the vacuums goover the front of the truck. The State Patrolparked the trucks due to the obstructed view.

The village has two such trucks which it hasused for 11 years, both of which are now outof service due to the State Patrol ruling. In themeantime, Johnson said the village is develop-ing a new method for which leaves are pushedinto garbage trucks using custom built loadingramps by smaller articulated pusher vehicles.

For the new process, the village is rentingtwo garbage trucks to rent leaves. The truckswere rented by a firm in Florida, and Johnsonsaid transportation covered part of the cost of

the rental. He added that it costs $2,000 perweek to rent the trucks.

Johnson sa id there will be fewer trips usingthe rented packer trucks, since they will getmore leaves in the truck.

Our intent is to be as efficient as possiblewith the collection, Johnson said. He said theoperation will save on resources used for leafcollection.

but larger than Spain, India, Canada and 60percent the size of Germany; In the United States, the average value

added per worker in manufacturing is$118,419. In China , it is $13,266.

The value added per U.S. manufacturingworker is almost 10 times the value of China,Barnard said.

Barnard said manufacturing should bethe engine for the future and it should be anarea in which both schools and public policyfocus for such a long period of time.Unfortunately, we dont see t hat happening.

According to Barnard, the United Stateshas gone from being an energy importer

toward being an energy exporter. By 2020,the United States will be energy independent,he said.

Seven years ago, you would never, everhave believed that was going to happen, hesaid.

The implication of that will be an increasedemphasis on jobs in the manufacturing sector,as there will be 3.3 million new jobs being cre-ated due to energy independence. Also, $468billion will be added to the gross domesticproduct and $258 billion will be added to theannual industrial output.

The bottom line is we have to continue to

focus in manufacturing as our future. In thenext five to 10 years, its going to be very clear

that the United States is going to be the pre-eminent manufacturer in the world, Barnardsaid.

He said the single biggest challenge isfinding the people to work in the manufactur-ing sector and explained that businesses in themanufacturing sector will have to continue tochange and plan for the jobs of tomorrow.

If we do that properly, then people willlook at manufacturing not as a plant, not as anold job classification, not as whether youreunion or non-union, as a machinist or anassembler theyll be looking at manufactur-ing as the anchor on which this country is

going to grow for the next 10 to 15 years,Barnard said. I really mean that because thatreally is our future.

Harvey Neu of Neus Building Centeradded that a strong manufacturing communi-ty makes for a strong community strongschools, strong housing market, strong every-thing.

Neu added that he is amazed what isproduced in the area which is created by thelocal workforce and used globally.

We want that workforce to continue togrow and support these manufacturers, Neusaid.

Unexpected and unannounced at leastto Kohel - Representatives from OfficeMax sur-prised the Shady Lane fourth-grade teacherwith $1,000 of classroom supplies, includinga new chair and Amazon Kindle Fire.

A surprised Kohel was told not to partici-pate in crazy hair day because photos wereto be taken of her class. She had no ideawhat was really happening.

Principal Brad Hoffman nominated Kohel. She is among 1,000 teachers across the coun-try to receive the honor.

"Not only does Mrs. Kohel care deeplyabout her students and make sure they learn

every day, she is also a leader in our school,"said Hoffman. "She is always an early imple-menter when there is new district trainings orcurricula."

Kohel is a mentor, a member of ShadyLanes leadership team and is the coach forthe schools Positive Behavior Interventionsand Supports (PBIS).

"Mrs. Kohel has worked hard to create an

environment where students, parents and staffknow what the expectations are, not only aca-demically, but behaviorally as well," Hoffmansaid. "The expectations are clear, and expect-ed behaviors are taught, recognized and rein-forced."

Typical of Kohels character, she instantlysaid she would share the huge box of supplieswith the rest of the school.

OfficeMax and AdoptAClassroom.orgjoined together to create A Day Made Betterto help ease the financial burden for teachers.Selected teachers were nominated by theirprincipals for demonstrating passion, dedica-tion and innovation in the classroom.

    HUNTERS PROTECT YOUR HEARING

DURING HUNTING SEASON!People who use firearms are more likely to develop hearing loss than those who do

not. Firearm users tend to have high-frequency permanent hearing loss, which meansthat they may have trouble hearing speech sounds like "s," "th," or "v" and other high-pitched sounds.

The good news is that people can prevent hearing loss by using appropriate hearing pro-tective devices (HPDs), such as earmuffs or earplugs. However, studies have shown thatonly about half of shooters wear hearing protection all the time when shooting. Huntersare even less likely to wear hearing protection because they say they cannot hearapproaching game or other noises. Call us today to schedule your free appointment so wecan help you choose the type of hearing protection that is right for you.

TIPSTO PROTECTYOURHEARINGAlways use some type of hearing protection any time you fire a gun.Always have disposable HPDs handymake them part of your gear. Double-protect your ears, like putting muffs over plugs, when shooting big-bore firearms. Choose smaller caliber firearms for shooting and hunting. Choose single-shot firearms instead of lever action, pump, or semi-automatic guns.

Avoid shooting in groups or in reverberant environments. Use electronic or nonlinear HPDs for hunting.
