Wisconsin Governor Scott Walkerannounced April 9 that U.S. 41 in the easternpart of the state has been officially added tothe Interstate System as I-41.
"The Interstate designation is the culmina-tion of years of hard work by federal, state, and local officials that will stimulate economicopportunities from Milwaukee to Green Bayand beyond," Governor Walker said. "OurInterstate system is a critical part of our infra-structure, which fuels commerce, helps growthe economy, and create jobs."
The Federal Highway Administration(FHWA) officially approved the Interstate des-ignation - the final step in a process that begannearly 10 years ago. Installation of about3,000 new signs will begin this summer withsigning expected to be completed byNovember 2015.
"The official designation of I-41 is tremen-dous news that will support the safe, efficientmovement of people and commerce for manyyears to come," said Wisconsin Department ofTransportation Secretary Mark Gottlieb."Along with Governor Walker's leadership, Iwant to thank former Congressman Tom Petri,
our current Congressional delegation, statelegislators, local government officials, andcommunity leaders who helped make I-41 areality."
Wisconsin's newest Interstate route runsconcurrently with US 41 for the entire route. I-41 begins at the I-94/US 41 interchange locat-ed about one mile south of theWisconsin/Illinois border. It follows I-94 northto the Mitchell Interchange, I-894 and US 45around Milwaukee and then joins US 41 northto Green Bay where it ends at the I-43Interchange.
Existing US 41 in the Milwaukee area willbe re-routed to follow I-41 along I-894 and US45. Current US 41 along Lisbon Avenue andAppleton Avenue from I-94 at the StadiumInterchange northwesterly to the interchangewith US 45 will be re-numbered WIS 175.

One of two major events in theGermantown School District March 20 and21 was the educational summit held at a con-ference center in the village.
The summit — held at the Florian ParkConference Center — was described as“Version 1.0” and included participation by
approximately 90 people. According to adraft summit overview from the district, the pur-pose of the summit was “to bring some defini-tion to the ‘Germantown School District Way’through what it means to ‘Empower andInspire Every Student to Success.’”
“The Germantown Way” was the titlegiven by district officials to develop the dis-trict’s own curriculum and standards after theSchool Board decided against accepting theCommon Core Standards in December 2014.
The summit was subtitled “Movingbeyond standardization into the future oflearning for our students.” Standardizationwas mentioned in one of the first subject areasin a summit overview that was prepared bydistrict staff following the summits.
“Through the Industrial Age to today, standardization has increased the ability to
efficiently produce the quality and quantity ofthings we need and want in our lives,” a draftof the summit overview stated. “The problemis that the business and manufacturing men-tality of standards and standardizationimpedes our work to help children grow, learnand develop into productive, capable, caring, thinking, creative human beings — all withunique talents, strength, interests and overallpersona.”
In area of standardization, two ideaswere suggested, according to the summitoverview: that “the mentality of standardiza-tion could be one of the biggest challengesfacing education today given that there isnothing ‘standard’ about our kids, nor do wewant to make them all the same” and possi-ble benefits of “shifting our focus on stan-dardized academic content acquisition as the
end of schooling” to engage students in learn-

(NAPSI)—While most motorists are fondof what’s known as that “new car smell,”there are some other specific odors thatmotorists should also be aware of.
Identifying these suspect smells earlyon can help car owners be car care awareand avoid the hassle and expense of anunexpected breakdown.
The Car Care Council recommends asniff test of your vehicle to identify anyunusual smells, including the following sixwarning signs:
1. The smell of burnt rubber could beslipping drive belts or misplaced loosehoses that might be rubbing against rotat-ing accessory drive pulleys. Do not reachin if the engine compartment is hot.
2. The smell of hot oil could mean that
oil is leaking onto the exhaust system. Toverify the leak, look for oil on the pavementor smoke coming from the engine area.
3. The smell of gasoline is likely thesign of a gas leak in some area of the vehi-cle such as a fuel injector line or the fueltank. Any smell of fuel can result in a pos-sible fire hazard, so immediate attentionshould be given.
4. The sweet smell of syrup may be a
sign that your car is leaking engine coolantfrom a leaky component related to thecar’s cooling system. Do not open the radi-ator cap when it is hot.
5. The smell of burning carpet could bea sign of brake trouble and a safety haz-ard. Have your brakes checked right away, especially if this smell is happening duringnormal driving conditions.
6. If the smell of rotten eggs is comingfrom your vehicle, it could mean a problemwith your catalytic converter or a poorlyrunning engine causing the catalytic con-verter to become overloaded and fail dueto meltdown.
“When you smell any peculiar odor, you should not ignore it. Instead, bringyour vehicle to a professional service tech-
nician that you trust to get an informedopinion on the nature of the odor,” saidRich White, executive director, Car CareCouncil.
The Car Care Council is the source ofinformation for the “Be Car Care Aware”campaign promoting the benefits of regu-lar vehicle care. For a copy of the council’s“Car Care Guide” or for more information, visit www.carcare.org.

By Tresa EricksonWhen it comes time to buy a new car,
some people sell their old one while oth-ers use it for a trade-in. While selling usu-ally brings the best price, trading in a vehi-cle is a lot less hassle. The dealership usu-ally handles all of the paperwork for thetrade-in, and all you have to do is sign onthe dotted line. Dealerships won’t pay asmuch for trade-ins due to the costs incurredin selling them, but you can get a fair priceby prepping your car for the trade before-hand.
Clean sells, so clean your car, inside
and out. Wash and wax the exterior.Vacuum and dust the interior. Clean the
engine and top off the fluids. Car still notup to your standards? Have it detailed. While it will cost you, a good detail jobcan get you hundreds more in trade-invalue.
Condition sells, so make sure your caris in good condition. Have your vehicleinspected by a quality mechanic andmake any necessary minor repairs. Havethe oil changed and the tires rotated.Gather your maintenance records, alongwith a vehicle history report and an
inspection report, to prove that yindeed taken care of your car.
Do your homework and resetrade-in value of your car. There aal websites to assist you with this or and you will probably uncoveaverage and high retail value. Doestimate the trade-in value of yChances are the dealership will gthe average trade-in value, unlesslot of wear and tear. In that camight receive a low trade-in value
Once you know the trade-in vacan determine where the best dand negotiate a good deal. If thoffered for your trade-in seems tyou can use the knowledge anmentation you have gathered to gter deal.

By Tresa EricksonWhether new or used, a vehicle is a big
investment. Most people cannot afford topay for a car outright and must make pay-ments on it instead, usually for three to fiveyears. Regular maintenance is a must to pro-tect such an investment and extend the life ofa vehicle. Without it, the vehicle can breakdown and require big bucks to repair.
Remember, the moment you drive thevehicle off the lot, it is yours to care for. Readthe owner’s manual and follow the recom-mended maintenance schedule. Regular oilchanges and tire pressure checks are essen-tial for keeping cars running their best andusing as little gas as possible. Change youroil every 30,000 miles or as recommendedby the manufacturer. You can do this yourselfor have it done by a professional at a rea-sonable cost. Know the correct tire pressureand keep your tires properly inflated. Toextend the life of your tires and ensure even
wear, have them rotated regularly. There are many other components to avehicle’s engine, and it pays to have themchecked out from time to time. Again, followthe manufacturer’s recommended mainte-nance schedule. A quality mechanic is yourbest bet, unless you have extensive knowl-edge of the workings of a car. A mechaniccan check the air filter, brakes, fluids, exhaustsystem, battery and radiator, among otherthings.
Regular car washes are another must.Bird and pest residue, tar and other sub-stances can do major damage to a vehicle’sexterior over time. It pays to keep your newcar clean, inside and out. That’s right. Take
the time to vacuum and clean the interior. This is especially important if you haveyoung riders. Greasy fingers and stickyfoods and drinks can wreak havoc on interi-or upholstery and carpeting.
Even with the best of care, vehicles canbreak down. You are the first line of defensein avoiding expensive repairs. Know yourcar. Pay attention to the way it sounds andfeels, and at the first sign of trouble, get it toa repair shop. The smaller the problem, theeasier and cheaper it will be to fix.
