The Sussex Air Quality Partnership (Sussex-air)

Sussex-air is made up from AQ professionals in all of the

Sussex local and county authorities with support from the

Health Protection Agency, the EA and Sussex Universities.

Sussex-air provides support to

service, modelling, policy

support, seminars and training.

What is the state of our air quality in our region?

Air Quality is measured across Sussex using air quality

monitoring stations (AQMS) and diffusive techniques (NO2).

Sussex contains 24

AQMS , measuring O3,

NO2, SO2, PM10 and

PM2.5

In rural, sub-urban and

roadside locations.

Air Quality Management Areas (AQMA)

Air Quality Management areas are designated when specific

measured pollutant concentrations are in breach of UK/EU

standards, these initiate Air Quality Action Plans.

Sussex = 5 LA AQMA’ s +3 (2010)

• pollutant PM10 (1) and NO2 (4)

• traffic sources

• exposure of people/schools near roads

• locations tend to be built-up narrow

streets (towns and villages) and/or

roads with high volumes of traffic

Ozone – a problem for all of us.

Some of the highest summer ozone concentrations are seen in South and South East England.Sussex measured 2nd highest ozone in UK (2006).

What are the challenges?

Transport emissions:

• Existing fleet and new fleet (Car clubs, LEZ’s, parking control)

• Procurement policy (Greening the fleet)

• Infra-structure (Public transport, low emission vehicles)

Sustainable development planning in the South East:

• Existing policy needs stronger links in air quality & climate

change: Regional Strategies (SE Plan), Local Development

Frameworks (LDF) Local development and Transport (LTP3).

What can/are we doing?

Manage impacts:

Engage:

Sussex-air/Lewes DC are member of Low Emissions Forum

and recently won Regional Group Initiative (RGI) funding to

develop a Low Emission Strategy in Sussex.

• Planning policy development (LDF & LTP3)

• SPD/tools/S106/CIL initiatives (guidance for developers)

• Linking air quality and climate change initiatives

• Pilot/assist Low Emission Vehicle initiatives






Manage impacts:

Encourage:

• LEZ development (with LA’s and CC’s

through EU projects)

• Pilot/assist LEV initiatives:

• Link in West Sussex electric vehicle

charge points to wider area

• Low emission initiatives (LES):

- Car clubs, bus partnerships

Reduce exposure:

• airAlert was developed in Sussex in 2006 to inform

vulnerable people when pollution levels become elevated.

• > 700 people

• airAlert in Herts, Beds and

Southampton (2010).





Sussex-air members are in public health protection

and delivering air quality and longer term climate

change solutions are where we need to move toward.
