Dear Alumni & Friends,Throughout 2012-2013 our Muskingum community celebrated 175 years of excellence. With great pride in your achievements and with profound appreciation for your commitment, we paid tribute to our historic past and together we moved forward into an exciting future.

Your generosity and your vision are evident across the University. You have brought to fruition five new, state-of-

the-art facilities—including our new Louis O. Palmer Gallery—and many significant campus renovation and restoration projects.

You have enabled Muskingum to broaden our range of academic majors, enhance internships and experiential learning offerings, expand study abroad opportunities, and enrich students’ co-curricular development through initiatives such as our new men’s and women’s varsity lacrosse teams.

You have established nine endowed chairs to ensure that superb teaching will remain a hallmark of our University, and you have helped to keep a Muskingum ed-ucation affordable for our students. Your gifts allow us to bring to life, every day, our timeless mission to educate students intellectually, spiritually, socially and physically.

With this report, we gratefully acknowledge the gifts you have given. We again celebrate the service and dedication of those Muskies who were honored during 2012-2013 with the President’s Medal, Distinguished Service Awards, Honorary Doctor of Science Degrees, Distinguished Faculty Awards, and induction into the Athletic Hall of Fame. And, we introduce you to two young alumni who exemplify what a Muskingum education can mean to individuals and to the global commu-nity —and how your gifts transform the lives of those who follow in your footsteps here on this campus.

Myron E. Moorehead II, M.D., ’58 Issues Call to Service

Our 2013 Undergraduate Commencement celebration began with inspiring words from longtime Muskingum Trustee Myron E. Moorehead II, M.D., ’58, who urged degree candidates to heed the call of service and do their part to change the world.

“Remember that you must first serve before you can lead,” Dr. Moorehead said. “Allow yourself to take a chance so you can make a change.”

Dr. Moorehead delivered the address May 11 at the Baccalaureate Ceremony, drawing on the values that have guided both his professional and civic life. Later that day during the Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony, he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science degree in recognition of his service and achievements.

The founder and director of the Women’s Laser Institute and the Fibroid Center of New Orleans, Dr. Moorehead pioneered laser microsurgery treatments that provide alter-natives to hysterectomy and give hope to infertility patients.

As New Orleans’ King Zulu in 1999, he arranged an unprecedented meeting between the kings of that city’s leading African American and white carnival krewes. The formal Lundi Gras (Fat Monday) meeting of the two Mardi Gras leaders has been an annual tradition ever since.

Dr. Moorehead holds a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in biology from Muskingum and a Doctor of Medicine degree from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee. He completed his residency in obstet-rics and gynecology at Walter Reed General Hospital in Washington, D.C. and served in the United States Air Force.

He is a leader in multiple professional societies, has served on many boards of directors, and was chairman of the board of Xavier University of Louisiana and of the Greater New Orleans Foundation. Dr. Moorehead and his wife, Patricia, live in Kenner, Louisiana. They have three children.

Frank Festi, Jr. ’75 Challenges Students to “Build a Better World”

Frank Festi, Jr. ’75 helped usher in the 2012-2013 aca-demic year with a convocation address that encouraged students to “… build a better you, so you can build a better world. Take advantage of everything this experience has to offer. Be honest, be positive and believe in yourself.”

Festi is executive principal of Rea & Associates, a leading Ohio accounting and consulting firm. Rea advises closely held private companies and prominent individuals, and has 11 locations and a staff of more than 200 professionals. 

Festi joined Rea in 1976 and has been a partner since 1981. A certified public accountant and certified financial planner, he provides personal financial planning and tax and business consulting services for clients of the firm’s Medina office. Festi has served as a 30-year member of the board of directors of the Ohio Society of CPAs and is active with the American Institute of CPAs and the Financial Planning Association.

He volunteers extensively on behalf of his community, education, the arts and economic development. Festi helped found, and served as president of, the Medina City School Foundation and the Medina County Performing Arts Foundation. He has been president of the Medina County Economic Development Corporation, the Rotary Club, the Medina Jaycees and the YMCA. He has also chaired fundraising for the United Way. Festi was recognized with the Jaycees Distinguished Service Award for his commit-ment to improving the quality of life in his community.

A native of Dover, Ohio, Festi holds a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in economics. While at Muskingum, he was a varsity football player, student leader, resident assistant and resident director.

Festi and his wife, Spring Sardelli Festi ’76, live in Medina. They have two children.

D. Tom McCalmont ’76 Urges Graduates to Push Forward Fearlessly”

Muskingum Trustee D. Tom McCalmont ’76 called on the Class of 2013 to “Make good use of what you know, and push forward fearlessly.”

It was a fitting message from a serial entrepreneur who has tapped his knowledge to earn 13 patents and a place among the nation’s solar energy pioneers.

McCalmont also reminded graduates that one individ-ual—in his case, an extraordinary teacher who provided an equally extraordinary learning experience—can make a difference that lasts a lifetime.

He delivered his remarks May 9 during Muskingum’s 21st Graduate Commencement for students earning mas-ter’s degrees in teaching, education, and information strategy, systems and technology. McCalmont was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science degree for his leadership, entrepreneurial and technological achievements, environmental stewardship, and longstanding support of his alma mater.

McCalmont is co-founder and president of the California-based McCalmont Engineering, a leading designer of large-scale solar power plants and related renewable energy technology. He also is co-founder and chairman of SolarTech, a nonprofit public/private consor-tium that tackles the technological and market challenges that hinder the widespread adoption of solar energy.

In addition to serving on the Muskingum Board of Trustees, McCalmont is a member of the Santa Clara University Industry Advisory Board, Joint Venture: Silicon Valley Network, and Climate Prosperity Council, a Silicon Valley initiative dedicated to creating economic prosperity through green initiatives.

He holds a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in physics from Muskingum and a Master of Science degree with a major in electrical engineering from Stanford University.

McCalmont lives in San Jose, California, with his wife, Darlene, co-founder and CEO of McCalmont Engineering. They have two children.

Wiley W. Souba, M.D., ’75 Emphasizes Aspirations, ActionsUndergraduate Commencement speaker Wiley W. Souba, M.D., ’75 urged the Class of 2013 to “Be bold, be confi-dent and don’t be afraid to set the bar high. Your actions are the best definition of your true self.”

In recognition of his contributions and accomplish-ments, Dr. Souba was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science degree during the undergraduate ceremony May 11. He serves Dartmouth College in New Hampshire as vice president for health affairs, dean of the Geisel School of Medicine, professor of surgery and professor of busi-ness administration in the Tuck School of Business.

A highly regarded physician, scientist, educator and leader, Dr. Souba is considered one of the nation’s top surgical oncologists. His research on amino acid metab-olism in relation to intestinal cancer has been funded by the National Institutes of Health and reported in over 300 peer-reviewed scientific articles.

Dr. Souba is co-editor of the Journal of Surgical Research and a frequent lecturer and workshop presenter on health care leadership and leadership development. He is active in multiple professional societies and serves on the administrative board of the Association of American Medical Colleges.

Dr. Souba has a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in chemistry from Muskingum, a Doctor of Medi-cine degree from the University of Texas Medical School at Houston, a Doctor of Science degree in nutritional bio-chemistry from the Harvard School of Public Health and a Master of Business Administration from Boston University College of Business. He and his wife, Lynne Hayes Souba, live in Hanover, N.H., and have two children.

Dr. Wehage came to Muskingum in 1991 to head the German program. Under his leadership, the program has grown significantly, adding student exchange opportunities and courses in German film and literature. He earned his Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts and doctoral degrees from the University at Albany, State University of New York. The award for excellence in scholarship is named in honor of William Rainey Harper, Muskingum class of 1870, recognized as one of America’s greatest education innovators. Dr. Harper was the founding president of the University of Chicago.

Dr. Laura Hilton, Associate Professor of History and Department Chair, Cora I. Orr Faculty Service Award for leadership and service on and off campus. Dr. Callaghan cited Dr. Hilton’s “sheer number of service roles,” “the quality and dedication of her leadership and service” and her involvement with projects that “not only make Muskingum University an even greater institution, but which further enhance our reputa-tion and impact, both regionally and beyond.”

Dr. Hilton joined the faculty in 2001. She is an advisor to many student groups and serves on numerous committees and task forces. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of New Rochelle, her Master of Arts degree from Fordham University and her doctoral degree from The Ohio State University. The service award is named in honor of a fac-ulty member and administrator who served Muskingum with devotion and distinction for four decades.

Distinguished Faculty Awards

Every year, Muskingum recognizes three faculty mem-bers for their outstanding contributions in teaching, scholarship and service. For 2012-2013, Distin-guished Faculty Awards were presented to:

Gary Golden, Associate Professor of Business, William Oxley Thompson Award for Excellence in Teaching for his energy, passion for education and knowledge, and ability to generate that same passion in his students. “Professor Golden genuinely loves teaching, and seems to be happiest when he is with his students,” said Dr. James E. Callaghan, Vice President for Academic Affairs, who presented the awards. “Students, similarly, respect him immensely, enjoy being in his classroom and are inordinately attentive. He is a great teacher.”

Golden joined the Muskingum faculty in 1999. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Ithaca College and a Master of Business Administration from Southern Illinois University. The award for excellence in teaching is named in honor of an alumnus, class of 1878, who went on to become one of the most influential presidents of The Ohio State University.

Dr. Franz-Joseph Wehage, Professor of German, William Rainey Harper Award for Outstanding Scholarship, including his co-authorship of Geschäftsdeutsch: An Introduction to German Business Culture. In its first year of publication, the book was ad-opted as a textbook by 16 universities. Dr. Callaghan described the textbook as “a towering accomplishment” that will benefit students and professors of German around the world.

Susanne Hussey Burlingame ’63 was awarded the President’s Medal for embracing a life of service and having a powerful, enduring impact on our University, her community and communities across the nation.

She accepted the award with humility, saying, “I share this award with my deserving classmates. I am honored to be among the Long

Magenta Line of alumni whose lives have been transformed by our Musking-um education—and who recognize our responsibility to provide that same opportunity to future generations.”

She earned her Muskingum Bachelor of Science degree magna cum laude in chemistry. Throughout her life, she has demonstrated a strong commitment to education, as a teacher of high school chemistry and mathematics, and as a champion of the local library and its seminal role in opening the doors to knowledge for community members of all ages.

A dedicated volunteer, Sue Burlingame devotes her time and talents to her Presbyterian Church, civic groups in her Chatham, New Jersey communities, and the Pioneers, the largest industry-related service organization in the world. For-

merly known as the Telephone Pioneers of America, the Pioneers group links current and retired telecommunications employees across the United States and Canada. She has worked in partnership with her husband Harold W. (Hal) Burlingame, Class of 1962, to develop the capacity of the Pioneers and enhance the organization’s ability to carry out its grassroots mission of service “country to country, city to city, and neighbor to neighbor.” She has helped her com-munity build on the foundation of a significant Pioneers initiative to feed the homeless, sharing her expertise and service ethos in the creation of the Inter-faith Council for Homeless Families. Now known as Family Promise of Morris County, New Jersey, this non-sectarian, non-profit agency brings together more than 1,600 congregants from 75 congregations of differing faiths to provide shelter and services for homeless children and their families.

Since Hal Burlingame’s 1994 election as Chair of the Board of Trustees, Sue Burlingame has served Muskingum by designing and leading significant special events for alumni and friends across the nation, campus community members, and Trustee families. She has joined Hal Burlingame in generous philanthropy to Muskingum, which has shaped the University’s future and helped ensure that its historic excellence will continue to endure throughout time.

Sue and Hal Burlingame are the parents of Marjorie Burlingame Han-cock, Class of 1991, and Betsy Burlingame Wood. Their Muskingum legacy family includes their mothers M. Elizabeth Pickens Hussey, Class of 1932—one of Muskingum’s first graduates to major in geology—and Elsie Wagner Burlingame, Class of 1960.

Professor Emeritus Robert Owen Jones ’63Robert Owen Jones—performer, conductor and professor emeritus—was named a 2013 Distinguished Service Award recipient for enriching the lives of Muskingum students and community members through his music. The award is spon-sored by the Muskingum University Alumni Council.

Jones has been a soloist with the New York Philharmonic and Boston Symphony orchestras and has appeared in leading roles with major opera companies nationwide. He was professor of music and director of choral activities at Muskingum for three decades, conducting the Concert Choir, Chamber Singers, and Choral Society, and leading them in performances in Great Britain, Switzerland and Austria. Jones has been a frequent faculty recitalist and touring clinician and guest conductor for university, high school and community choirs.

He established the Muskingum Alumni Choir in 1989 and has conducted its Alumni Weekend performances ever since. As a Muskingum student in 1960, Jones led his classmates in forming the “Animals 8” men’s choral ensemble. He has been honored with Muskingum’s Cora I. Orr Faculty Service Award, the All-Ohio Youth Choir Distinguished Service Award, and the Cambridge Singers Rigel Award for Musical Contributions to the Community.

Jones has a Bachelor of Science degree from Muskingum and a Master of Science degree from the Juilliard School of Music in New York City. He performs as a soloist, with his wife Carol Wil-cox-Jones as a duo, and with their children as “The Jones Family.”

Professor Emeritus Dr. Steve Kokovich ’63Professor Emeritus Steve Kokovich changed the lives of genera-tions of Muskingum students and community members through his academic innovations and alumni outreach, as a faculty member, and as special assistant to the president. These achieve-ments earned him the 2013 Distinguished Service Award.

Dr. Kokovich was a teacher, principal and assistant superintendent before joining Muskingum in 1978. He established Muskingum’s first graduate degree program, the Master of Arts in Education, and developed an educational support system to allow students with dyslexia to fully partici-pate in the Muskingum curriculum. That support system formed the basis for today’s nationally recognized PLUS Program for students with learning disabilities.

Dr. Kokovich was the founding director of the Alumni Leadership Initiative, which brings distinguished alumni to campus to share their knowledge with current students, and has resulted in alumni-hosted student internships, mentoring partnerships and career networks.

For more than 25 years, Dr. Kokovich was Muskingum’s faculty representative to the NCAA. He is a longtime member of the New Concord Village Council, has served on the Board of Directors of the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy, and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Evergreen Retirement Village.

Dr. Kokovich earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Muskingum and his Master of Education and Doctor of Phi-losophy degrees from Ohio University. He and his wife, Susan Wade Kokovich ’63, have a daughter, Kelly Kokovich Rinkes ’91 and son-in-law, Charles Rinkes ’91—and a grandson.

Hugh Martin ’09 Poet and Stanford Fellow

Hugh Martin ’09 was at Musking-um for one semester when his Army National Guard unit was called to serve in Iraq. Eighteen months later, he returned to Muskingum and honed the skills that enabled him to give witness to his Iraq experiences—and

to earn national recognition as a poet.Martin is a Stegner Fellow in the Creative Writing

Program at Stanford University in California, an honor reserved for five poets worldwide each year. The Stick Soldiers, poems about his tour of duty in Iraq, was published in April and won the A. Poulin, Jr. Poetry Prize, which recognizes a poet’s first book. The Stick Soldiers also was named a 2013 Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle selection. Two of Martin’s essays have been published in The New York Times “At War” blog.

“Most of my work is inspired by my experience in the war,” Martin said. “Generally speaking, if you’re involved in anything as foreign or dangerous as combat, you’re going to want to talk about it in some way. It’s challenging, but it also feels good to express it to the world.”

Martin wrote his first poems for a class at Muskingum. His professors recognized his talent immediately and provided the support that set him on his current course. Faculty members encouraged him to keep writing and to go on to graduate school.

As a result, in addition to his bachelor’s degree from Muskingum, Martin has a Master of Fine Arts from Arizona State University. He also is succeeding in a career that he otherwise would not even have considered.

“I don’t know what I’d be doing now if I hadn’t taken creative writing at Muskingum,” Martin said.

Dr. Amy Iler ’05 Scientist, Rocky Mountain Biological LaboratoryFrom May through September, Dr. Amy Iler ’05 can be found scouring the meadows and forests surrounding Colorado’s Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory (RMBL), examin-ing flowers, tracking hummingbirds, and recording plants’ responses to warmer temperatures.

A post-doctoral research associate in the University of Maryland Department of Biology, Dr. Iler’s primary interest is plant community ecology. Five months of the year, she is stationed at RMBL, engaged in research with her advisor, Dr. David Inouye.

Drawing on four decades of data on over 120 plant species, the two scientists have concluded that rising temperatures are affecting plants and broad-tailed hummingbirds. The biologists’ findings were reported in the journal Ecology and highlighted by the National Science Foundation.

Dr. Iler’s first conservation-related field experience came the summer between her sophomore and junior years at Muskingum, when she was selected for an internship with the Audubon Center for Research of Endangered Species (ACRES) in Louisiana. At the time, Muskingum Trustee Myron E. Moorehead II, M.D., ’58 served on the board of the Audubon Nature Institute, which runs ACRES. He en-couraged Muskingum students to apply for the intern slots.

When Dr. Iler looks back on that summer, she remembers helping to herd whooping crane chicks and bringing them indoors to safety during Tropical Storm Bill. She also recalls how the experience reinforced her determination to pursue a career that reflects her appreciation for biodiversity.

The internship is one of many reasons Dr. Iler treasures her ties to Muskingum. “I am honored to be associated with such a great institution,” she says. “It really is a special place.”

Dr. Iler has a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in conservation science from Muskingum and a doctoral degree in evolution, ecology and organismal biology from The Ohio State University.

Four alumni—Rex Hoon ’48, Doug Morgan ’90, Laurie Deal ’93 and Ashley Layman-Bennett ’02—are the 2012 inductees to the Muskingum Athletic Hall of Fame.

Rex was selected for his athletic accomplishments while at Muskingum and for his avid support and loyalty ever since. He earned 11 letters: four each in football and track and three in basket-ball. He was named All-Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) in 1946 for football and set the Muskingum record in the discus in 1948. Rex took a break from his studies to serve in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was awarded a Purple Heart and in 2009 was named a Cheva-lier (Knight) of the Legion of Honor of the French Republic, the highest honor bestowed upon individuals by the French

government. Rex earned his Bachelor of Arts degree with majors in health and physical education.

Doug came to Muskingum as a transfer student and made significant contributions to Muskie football. He capped his gridiron career by earning

the OAC’s Mike Gregory Award for top offensive lineman in 1989. That same year, he earned Pizza Hut and Don Henson All-American honors. Doug was a two-time All-OAC honoree and a 1989 Preseason All-American. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in business administration.

Laurie, a four-year letterwinner in basketball, scored a total of 1,060 points. She was a member of three straight NCAA Tournament teams and helped lead Muskingum to a second-place finish in the 1991 NCAA Tournament Final Four. Laurie was a member of the 1991 OAC Tournament championship team, the 1993 OAC regular season

championship team and was named All-OAC in basketball and track. She set the Muskie record for the high jump, at 5 feet 3 inches, and received the Anne White Strive for Excellence Award

for two-sport student-athletes. Laurie earned her Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in speech communication.

Ashley holds the Muskie record for career volleyball blocks, with 650, and ranks second for career kills, with 1,479. In 1998, she was a key member of the NCAA regional championship team, helping lead the Muskies to the Elite Eight. A year later, she was instrumental in the team’s rise to third in the nation at the NCAA Tournament. Ashley was a three-time All-OAC and All-Great Lakes Region honoree and a three-time Academic All-OAC honoree. In 2001-2002 she wrapped up her Muskie career by earning two top honors: the Academic All-American Award and the Clyde A. Lamb Scholar-Athlete Award, which is OAC’s highest academic honor. She has a Bachelor of Science degree with majors in business and psychology.

M embers of the Class of ’63 marked their golden anni-versary by making a record gift of $3,461,236.18 to their alma mater. Class

representatives presented the gift to Muskingum President Anne C. Steele on Saturday, June 15, during the luncheon. More than two-thirds of Class of ’63 alumni contributed, underscoring their commitment to Muskingum and their recognition of the University’s role in their success. President Steele expressed her heartfelt appreciation for the Class of ’63’s extraordinary generosity, noting its profound impact on the entire Muskingum community.
