Transcript of Survey monkey audience completed

By Hannah Hopgood

I posted my survey on popular social networking sites to engage audiences to take part in it, therefore creating non-bias more accture information, making my overall responses more reliable. 24 people in total responded to the survey, from different age ranges and genders, a small response so from this, I will also complete focus groups and interviews to gather more in-depth research as this is a vital role into our project as without research I would have no understanding of the audience or the genre.

The gender here shows to me that the majority of people that answered this survey were female but overall the indie genre is dominated by males within the industry. This shows to me that all products must be gender neutral which will impact the colour scheme as I will chose colours that are relatable to both gender rather than one such as pink being a very dominant female e colour as it stereotypically linked to the gender, I should also think of the colours and what they represent.

The dominant age range as shown to the right hand side was 15-30, this is my primary audience and for my secondary audience it is shown as 31-60 year olds. Having this knowledge I can make sure that the subject matter, language used and images are suitable in relation to audience’s age.

Having knowledge of this will help to allocate the amount of screen time each member will have during the music video. As we can see here the lead singer is seen as the most important to audience and therefore should be featured most within the music video or even in the composition of the band, being featured at the front to visual represent his authority in the band’s dynamics. Steven Morrissey shown in the foreground of this photography and other band members in the background showing his authority.

This question was answered very equally, showing to me that the viewer of a music video react well to both narrative and performance based videos, I could combine both these aspects by having a narrative in which the characters are band members talking the lyrics much like The Arctic Monkeys' Music video “Why do you only call me when you’re high?” where front man; Alex Turner features as the protagonist, shown in the image below.

Looking back at the dominant gender and age of the target audience I found that they and secondary audience members responded best with the subject matter of relationships., this would be a good subject matter to approach in the music video as it appeals to both female and male gender as well as any age group as everyone has experienced affectation or love and therefore will understand the emotions behind it which will help to make the audience make a personal connection with the music video’s message.

Linking with the design of the ancillary products I asked the audience what colours they link with the genre to assist me in how to represent the products in a modern day style yet relate to the indie genre.

The colours that the majority of audience members responded best to were neutral tones such as browns, creams, light greens etc, I aim to incorpate this into the house colours of the artist’s iconography to their brand identity established across all products, making the artist’s style recognisable to the viewer.

This question involved a personal written response from the audience, the most popular items featured were artistic subjects such as photography, art etc, vintage clothing style, time period, social networking sites and musical instruments. To make the products more aesthetically pleasing to the audience and the indie genre to help the identity of the music genre through stereotypically conventions, I aim to include these elements into each product appealing. I aim to research into these areas more through visual social networking sites such as Pinterest and Tumblr to create mood boards that will aid me in constructing the artist and the products.

This shows that overall I should create in-depth planning into the album, music video and how the audience can interactive with the artist such as through social networking sites which will help to employ the use of web 2.0 into my products. I feel that social networking sites would be an important aspect as many fans nowadays communicate through the web as this is their main source of entrainment and interaction. I could asking the audience what social networking sites and how they interactive with their favourite music artists to understand what sites I should link into my website design and contact information on the album’s design. As for the album and music video I could explore further by looking into pre-exsistngproducts as well as artist that could help impact the design and concept of each initial idea which I do later on in my planning section.

This will benefit my website and digipak design as I will include popular sites associated with each platform into the design to make my products more user friendly as the information for listening to or purchasing it can be found through popular sites they use on a daily basis. I found that YouTube, Spotify, physical CD, iTunes and Amazon were the polar sites that would work best with the audience’s response to this question.

Linking to Goodwin's theory of illustrated, exaggerated and disjunctive visuals in relation to the meaning and text of the song I asked this question to understand what concept they like best. The overall response from the audience is that they engaged more into the songs if the visuals matched up with the lyrics and meaning of the song as from this they have a better understanding through emplict message set out by producers to understand the media text.

In conclusion, this survey has help me to identify both audience areas, being primary (both genders, 15-30) and secondary (both gender, 31-60), this is important as it will impact the products I aim to construct including elements appealing to the target audience. The music video and ancillary products will be affected by these results as the choices to the questions that got the best results shows to me what elements would work best for each product increasing the popularity of the products, aiding them into more pleasing astheicathics gaining a larger audience. I also discovered that audience interaction is a vital aspect of the products as it allows a connection from artist to fan, this can be employed through social networking sites which also appeals to morden day audiences. From my research into production roles for each product I found the music video to be the most demanding so I chose to ask many detailed questions about the concept audiences prefer best to help me achieve the best result for my product, I found that illustrated, performance and narrative concept music videos about relationships were best responded to .
