if we had been able to get married in our state sooner, we would have done so long ago. We met back in 2005 while studying abroad in Madrid, Spain. Now, nine years later we will be among the first gay couples married in illinois after the same-sex marriage law takes effect in June of 2014. This opens the door for the next step, starting a family, because it allows legal parental protection. We don’t want to have a child to fulfill our own needs, but rather to sacrifice part of our life to give to a baby. We are at the point in our lives where we are ready for that opportunity.

after many hours of research we found expect Miracles Surrogacy and noticed that they had a financial assistance program, we applied and started the journey together. We are so grateful for the medical advances and to organizations like this one that have opened the possibility for people like us

to start a family. We want to make parenthood as equal as possible so we’ve decided both of us will be donors. it will make it that much more special to have two babies with each other’s dNa. This will be as close as we can get to having children together and completing our family.

With a very strong support system and our families behind us 100%, we feel equipped to face the difficulties and challenges of raising children as a same gender couple. our families will be by our side every step of the way and are especially excited for grandchildren! We’ve waited a long time to make this official and in the process show others you don’t have to fit into a “traditional mold” to start a family. everyone should have the opportunity to an enriching life full of acceptance and that’s the type of life our children will be brought into.

Meeting the love of your life, getting married and starting a family is a dream shared by many; however the right to get legally married is still denied in certain states to same sex couples. Last fall the state of Illinois passed a law to recognize gay marriage. For Tom Neal and Mario Cruz-Lopez, who have been together for almost a decade, this news couldn’t have come sooner. But an even bigger opportunity is right around the corner, the newlyweds will be starting a family through surrogacy.

i am a mother of three beautiful children; Laylah (10), amayah (9) and asyaiah (7). My hus-band, Lorenzo, and i have been married for 11 years. He has served in the Military for a decade. although being a military family comes with chal-lenges, it has also made us stronger. For us, be-coming parents was our dream come true and we completed our family at a young age. i truly love being pregnant and wanted to help other couples, who were faced with obstacles, start a family.

My first journey began five years ago. i met the intended parents; we instantly connected and were excited to get started. Soon after, i found out i was pregnant with a baby girl. in december of 2008 their beautiful healthy baby was born. When you see how much love parents have for their newborn it makes the experience so satisfying. i am grateful to be part of that miracle.

My second surrogacy journey was an experi-

ence full of love but also loss. For this journey i decided to help a gay couple start a family. after meeting the dad’s we were all excited to move forward. We implanted one embryo and five days later got the positive results. i was pregnant! Both dads flew to my hometown for the big gen-der reveal. i knew the gender, because of a previ-ous ultrasound so i made them a cake and inside it was the color blue for a baby boy. We cut the cake and the dad’s found the exciting “color” an-nouncing their son! The due date approached fast and that summer their healthy baby was born.

i went into my second surrogacy thinking we may do a sibling project, meaning i would help them have another baby. But a year ago we heard some devastating news. The biological fa-ther found out he had brain cancer. He was strong and fought hard, but lost his battle in March of 2013. The last year was really hard for us all.

even though i had only known him for a little more than two years it was like losing a family member. it breaks my heart to say that cancer took his life but it did not take away all of the love we have for him. Before he got sick one of his goals was to start a surrogacy agency and help others find the joy that he and his partner found through the process. He knew i had always wanted to work for an agency as well. i wanted to not only be a sur-rogate but i be able to connect others and help them on their path of becoming parents. i recently was hired to to work for expect Miracles. This is another dream come true because i am not only doing this for me but for the amazing man we lost. i hope he is proud of me for achieving this goal. i love getting the chance to show that surrogacy is a very positive experience. it is my passion. i am here to help others and be the best mom, wife, friend and surrogate i can be.

The GreaTesT GifTBeginning a new chapter or taking a journey down a different path can open you up to new adventures. That experience may also introduce you to special people who become a significant part of your future. April Chavez, 31, opened a new door of opportunity when she decided to become a surrogate. After two successful journeys her heart is still open with more to give.

creating what has come to be known as Sur-ratt Law Practice has been natural for us. it start-ed with a desire to work in a law firm environment that was free from chaos. Then it developed into a desire to give my staff the same quality of life that i strived for. To achieve that goal we real-ized that our happiness was defined by who our clients were. We had to have clients that we be-lieved in and that we could be proud of the work

we produced. if we com-promised on that then the entire system would go down. i’m proud of my of-fice. i’m proud of my staff. i’m proud to say that our ethics are never compro-mised. The dream has come true and we know that the environment we have in our office carries over to the experience that our client’s have with our office. it is pure and it is honest.

i started my career in insurance defense and then moved into fam-

ily law. insurance defense work was not for me although some days i do miss the complexity of learning about a new product for a product liabil-ity case or getting to interview numerous miners regarding their mining practices. However, i have a good relationship with family law that is here to stay.

Today, i am a fellow with the american

academy of assisted reproductive Technology, american Society of reproductive Medicine, National center for Lesbian rights, National LgBT Bar association, Nevada Justice asso-ciation, and the National Family Law advisory council. i have been lobbying with the Nevada Justice association since 2004. i have lobbied for the passage of the Nevada domestic Part-nership Bill, the uniform collaborative Law act and numerous other family law and adoption statutes. i often speak on LgBT family law, as-sisted reproductive and parentage matters at conferences such as Lavendar Law and the Family Law institute for the National LgBT Bar association and National center for Lesbian rights, the american academy of assisted re-productive Technology attorneys and the Ne-vada State Bar Family Law conference.

My dream path for my career in family law has never wavered. i now work with three of the most amazing attorneys i could ever ask for and a staff that makes me smile when i arrive at work every day. My paralegal, dawn Kaufman, has been by my side every step of the way, which is a sign that i can’t live without her and that the client’s adore her.

Third ParTy rePrOducTiON For women and men who are unable to use their own eggs or sperm,

those who want to parent without a partner and same sex couples, preg-nancy may be achieved using donor eggs, donor sperm and/or a gestational carrier (gc) who will carry the baby to term for the intended parent(s). cer-tain genetic conditions may also necessitate using a third party.

every patients circumstances are unique and require a varying level of oversight and sensitivity- which is why we have assembled a team of pro-

fessionals specializing in third party reproduction. our staff understands the complex nature of these assisted reproductive therapies and is prepared to patiently walk you, your partner and your donor/gc through this process.

The Fertility center of Las Vegos works with agencies that provide careful screening and uphold strict criteria for egg and sperm donation and gesta-tional carriers. This is to ensure the highest medical safety and also protects future parents from potential legal complications.
