'Run to the Sun!'

Yes, just in case you've forgotten, that round yellowy object over there is a very big star at the centre of our solar system called The Sun. At this

time of year, rumour has it that this celestial being has been know to put in an appearance for up to 17 hours in any one day! No such chance this year

though! Apart from a spell of about a week towards the second half of July, this summer has seen a serious lack of our big yellow friend! So here at SURPHANG we decided we all needed a bit of a

summery pick-me-up and so here it is – the Summer Shots Special, full of some uplifting sunny sizzlers to keep you all in there until the Sun makes its much anticipated comeback in the hopefully not too distant future, which I only pray had better be

before September! So here's to the summer!

Think France, think surf and this spot might not be the frst to come to

mind but Lacanau certainly has a lot to ofer. To help put it all better into perspective, Lacanau is to Hossegor

what Croyde is to Newquay. In other words, Lacanau is smaller but no less

vibrant still with some quality surf that is no less crowded! But in the

summer months, while Hossegor is eagerly awaiting the autumn swells

and the Quiksilver Pro, Lacanau takes centre stage as the up coming talent of the surfng world comes to town for the Sooruz Pro, making for

some electric action out in the fun summer waves 'a la plage'. So let's take a look at summer in Lacanau.

Diego Mignot

Diego Mignot makes the most of the summer waves at Lacanau.

Diegot is Nomme Mignot's slightly older cousin. He too spends his summers based in Lacanau inFrance but then jets of to Mexico in the winterwhere he surfs in the warmer Pacifc at Sayulita.Diego is as they say getting the best of bothworlds and it certainly shows in his surfng.

Diego also loves the lefts at Lacanau.

Following a winter of training, Diego cameback to a surfng season that began almostjust down the road for him in Panama at theWorld Junior Surfng Games. Here he tookadvantage of the repercharge, fnally rising to an overall 6th position in the Under 16s division, just beneath the 5th of his cousin.

Diego's surfing has certainly been pointing in the right direction this summer.

Since then, Diego has been in pretty muchevery fnal of every competition he's enteredso far this year, winning many of them too! From Rip Curl's Grom Searches to Quiksilver'sKing of the Groms, Diego has been up there at them all, dominating the Under 16s division.

Page 73: Surphang Magazine Issue 7

SM – 72

Hot ShotsThis summer though, Diego has really

proven his worth as he's taken on mucholder surfers on the ASP European Pro Junior circuit and still done very well!

So far he's made the Quarters, then the Semis and even reached 3rd place in a

Final in three consecutive events. This has launched him to an overall 11th

position on the current ASP European Pro Junior rankings. And with now one

fnal event at his home break of Lacanau, we're sure to be seeing a strong fnale to Diego's European season before he once

again jets back of for some winter warmth back in his other second home of Mexico!

The GossCouldn't let an issue go by without a bit

of gossip and so while Team GB are rising up the ranks of the Medals table at London 2012, our own Team GB surfers are similarly rising up the ASP rankings

on the European Pro Junior tour.

Luke Dillon is currently 38th while Harry Timson has made it up to 26th.

But current leader of the Brit pack is Luis Eyre who has rocketed up to 9th.We wish them all the very best as the

season reaches its climatic final in Lacanau next week. Go Team GB!

Next Issue

Hopefully that's reminded you all how good summer really can be! And hopefully there'll

be a couple more sizzling sessions like this one at Croyde where Woolacombe wanderer

Stu Campbell scored some sweet little sections and so went suitably big reminding us all why he's current British Open Champ.

And so that seemed a great place to start Issue 8, catching up with Stu in the 'Champ

Chat's' section as he hits Europe this summer. Our 'Hot Shots' section will put some of the Croyde Crew under the spotlight. Plus keep an eye out for our all new 'Fab Five' section. So as the real swells start rolling in there'll be plenty to look forward to in September!
