Surgical Versus Non-surgical, a Personal Choice

§  Every one of my patients has what I call a “unique risk threshold.” In other words, some have a high tolerance for dental procedures, others are particularly squeamish – and still others fall somewhere in between.

§  One thing I’ve learned is that you can never tell by looking; I’ve had huge musclemen faint at the first sign of a needle and on the opposite side of the spectrum I’ve had teeny-tiny women easily take on much more surgical and involved procedures.

§  The fact of the matter is, having a surgical versus a non-surgical procedure is your choice; nobody else’s. Don’t let anyone, let alone your dental provider, talk, bully or pressure you into doing something you don’t need to do or, even worse, something you absolutely, positively don’t want to do.

§  That said, let’s talk openly and honestly about the various pros and cons of invasive versus non-invasive procedures:

Surgical Procedures

§  In my office, as in many dental offices around the country, I offer a variety of procedures with varying degrees of intensity, including more involved procedures like tooth extractions, implants, and gum surgery.

§  Let’s talk about why surgical procedures may or may not be right for you:

§  Pros: If your smile is really in need of an overhaul, for either cosmetic or even comfort reasons, surgery can perform a myriad of beneficial tasks to properly give you the effect you are looking for. It can actually provide drastic, life-changing results. Modern technology has also made surgery less painful, more effective and involving less recovery time than ever before.

§  Cons: Surgery can be intimidating to a lot of people; sadly, this is something they may not be able to overcome when trying to obtain their A-List Smile. Recovery times can occasionally be painful and prolonged, though most involve only soreness for no more than 1-2 days.

§  The great news is that many dentists offer various sedation techniques that can make your dental procedure a breeze! You can choose to be mildly sedated but remain awake during the procedure with just laughing gas (nitrous oxide), your dentist can prescribe valium to keep you awake but more relaxed, or you can request IV sedation where you sleep during the procedure. Consult with your dentist and medical physician to see if you are a healthy candidate for sedation.

Non-surgical Procedures

Surgical Versus Non-surgical, a Personal Choice

§  There are a variety of non-surgical cosmetic dental procedures that can help you attain your A-List Smile. (See Step 4 for details.) For instance, procedures like Invisalign® Clear Braces, porcelain veneers, ZOOM!® Teeth Whitening and the Snap-On Smile® are all non-surgical procedures that require minimal invasion. Here we examine some of the pros and cons of non-surgical procedures: §  Pros: With non-surgical procedures, obviously, you don’t have the

anxiety, pain, or longer recovery times of surgery. Most non-surgical procedures are done on an outpatient basis, meaning you typically go home right after the procedure with minimal recovery. There is rarely, if any, pain involved; results are typically immediate and long-lasting.

§  Cons: Some non-surgical procedures have limits. These procedures sometimes need maintenance and touching up more frequently than surgical procedures. Many times they only mask problems as opposed to correct or undo some of the more serious problems that surgery can handle.

§  The decision to have surgery or not have surgery is an entirely personal one. A good cosmetic dentist should present you with multiple options of treatment. Whatever you decide, know that there has never been a better time for dentistry. Today’s products and technology are cutting edge, more effective and safer than ever before. If timing really IS everything, then you are getting an A-List Smile at just the right time!

§  A-List Advice:

§  Don’t let others influence your final decision as you prepare for any procedure. By all means, listen to advice as it is given, but the final decision must be yours.

§  “Your smile helps you present your best you. You exude happiness when you smile.” ~ Maxwell
