Introduction
• Surfboard: long platform able to float in the water while supporting the weight of a human• Invented by Hawaïans. Known as “papa he‘e nalu”• Early surfboards were made of wood• Today they are made of polyurethane foam
covered with fiberglass that provides a light and strong board
• Some recent board are made of carbon fiber

Construction
Length• Long boards make paddling easier• For beginners the longer the board the better• The board should be 1-2 ft taller than youThickness• Thick boards provide easier paddling and more glide
when standingWidth• Wide boards are more stable and makes it easier to
paddle but harder to maneuver

Shortboards
• Length: 6-7 ft (1.8-2.1 m)• Small Easy to maneuver
but hard to catch small waves because lack of flotation
• Good for powerful waves• Pointed nose and between
2 to 5 fins

Longboards
• Length: 9-12 ft. (2.7-3.7 m)
• Round and wide nose• Good for beginners
good stability• Can catch small waves more practice
• Also called: Malibu boards

Funboard
• Mid-size board: 7-8 ft (2.1-2.4 m)• Provides the maneuverability of the
shortboard and the speed of the longboard• Other boards are a combination between
short, fun and long board.– It includes: guns, olos, fish, eggs, bonzers, tri-fin,
2+1, mini tanker, quads, tow-boards, and hydrofoils.

Wetsuits
• It’s a cloth made of foamed neopren and used for water sports
• Provides thermal insulation, abrasion resistance and floatability (buoyancy)
• A shorty or spring suit covers the torso and has short sleeves and long or short legs
• A full suit or steamer covers the torso and the full length of the arms and legs.
