PRINCIPAL’S REPORT | SCOTT DIAMOND
The 2019 school year has begun with a rush. We are so excited to welcome so many new students and their families to the
SCSC community. This year we have 200 Year 7 students who began their secondary school journey with us while a
further 43 students have joined the College across Year 8 -11. Already these students have shown great enthusiasm for
their studies and we feel very fortunate that so many students and their families have placed their trust in the College. This
growth has taken our population to 931 students. What has been so impressive is the positive way all students have
adapted to this growth in the school from finding new classrooms to respectfully moving around the school at break times.
This positive approach by the students has really supported the College to make a smooth start to the year.
Term 1 is always a busy one with many events happening. This term we have the House Swimming Carnival on February
21st and the House Athletics Carnival on March 22nd. These events always provide a great opportunity for students and
staff together and we look forward to all students representing their house by dressing up in their colours and
participating strongly in all events.
STRIVE - Student Leaders
We held our first assembly for the year on Monday where the senior student leaders for 2019 were presented to all
students and staff. This year I am again proud to report that the students in these roles really are wonderful role models for
our school community and I know they will do a wonderful job in leading the student body and representing the college
with distinction.
This year our student leaders are:
College Captains
· Riley Beer, Eloise Kerrison and Caitlin McCaffrey
College Vice Captains
· Lachie Smith, Breanna Sweeney and Max Virgona
House Captains
· Zeally - Chris Walsh, Max Virgona and Riley Beer
· Bells - Taylor Higgins and Ben Harrop
· Birdrock - Tess Robb and Lachie Smith
· Roadkinght - Eloise Kerrison Breanna Sweeney and Caitlin McCaffrey
Achieving a student leadership role really is a huge accomplishment and something each and every one of these students
and their families should be most proud of. Congratulations!
UNITE – New Staff
The growth in our student numbers has allowed the College to expand the staff team. This year we welcome nine new
teachers to the College:
Olivia O’Brien – Olivia joins our school having previously worked at Baimbridge College in Hamilton. Olivia will be teaching
Year 7 FUSE and Year 11 Biology.
Maddi Panozzo – Maddi previously worked at Brunswick Secondary College. Maddi will be working in the Year 7 FUSE
team and also teaching Year 11 English.
Sheridan Graham – Sheridan was a foundation teacher at Hazelglen College and will be working in our Year 8 FUSE
program as well as teaching Year 11 English.
Jules Kent – Jules is a graduate teacher having previously worked as a Marine Biologist. Jules will be working in the Year 8
FUSE team and teaching Year 10 Chemistry. This is her first full year of teaching.
Tim Mawdsley – Tim is an experienced teacher having worked in many settings including Special Education. Tim will be
working in our Year 8 FUSE team.
Amy Snow – Joins our Year 9 FUSE team. Amy has previously worked as an Assistant Principal at Northern Bay College
and will bring a huge level of leadership and professionalism to our team.
Abbey Speed – Abbey is a graduate teacher. Abbey completed her teaching rounds at SCSC last year and as such knows
many members of our school community already.
Mark Orton – Mark is an experienced Indonesian and EAL teacher and joins our Indonesian team with a lot of enthusiasm
and passion for teaching Indonesian.
Cassie Blakeway – Cassie is also a graduate teacher who has previously completed her teaching rounds at SCSC. Cassie
will be teaching PE and VET sport and Recreation. Also look out for Cassie representing Geelong in the AFLW competition.
Along with these staff members we welcome back Luci Reuben, Marley Dalziel, Simon Gale and Ben Reid. Luci, Marley,
Ben and Simon are such valuable members of our school and we are so happy to have them back on board for 2019.
STRIVE – Sports Academy
The SCSC Sports academy continues to be run by Team Hemley in 2019. This year over 60 students have enrolled in the
program. This year training sessions will be held before and after school. The sessions which include sport specific as well
as general athlete development sessions are run at the College and see the students receive expert coaching and athlete
analysis. The SCSC Sports Academy really has moved to whole new level of professionalism and we are really excited to
see how these changes impact positively on all aspects of school life for the students involved. To find out more about the
programs available please contact Team Hemley on [email protected]

Parents and guardians are reminded that the Department of Education and Surf Coast Secondary College do not provide
personal accident insurance or ambulance cover for students.

WHAT’S ON AT SCSC? The Pathways Foundation has been supporting young people’s transition from child to adult through their Rites of
Passage program for over 20 years. The Surf Coast Secondary College community has been generously invited by the
Pathways Foundation to host a free “Raising Teenagers” presentation to strengthen our local community.
The “Raising Teenagers” presentation recognises that adolescence can be a tumultuous stage in the lives of young
people and their families. The presentation seeks to empower parents by equipping them with an understanding of
normal adolescent behaviours such as risk taking and testing limits. Parents also leave the evening with practical
strategies to help develop healthy boundaries, negotiate changing responsibilities and to support their kids to maintain
positive self-esteem.
The talk is for parents only and is not suitable for young people to attend. Please register your interest through the
College’s Facebook page or via e-mail ([email protected])
The event will be held on Monday February 18th from 7pm to 9pm at SCSC in the Humanities Building.

Year 9 – Ambisie Guest Speaker!
The Year 9 Future Ambitions Group was very lucky to
have ‘Ambisie’ organise a guest speaker for our students
on Monday. The Ambisie purpose is to inspire the next
generation by encouraging them to follow their passion.
They do this by connecting talented people (like business
owners, entrepreneurs and people who are great at their
passion) with schools to share their stories with the next
generation from real-life experiences. Our cohort
listened intently to Kate Williams who is a Certified
Personal Trainer, Holistic Health Coach and owner of
Retreat Yourself, a wellness hub that creates a seasonal
health retreat in a box, designed to inspire and
encourage you to lead a healthy & fulfilled life. She
shared her stories, pathways and passion for her work
which is exactly what we want our Future Ambitions
students to do themselves!
