getting to know the different club representatives.

Class Rep Training and Class Rep Council- I helped with the formulation of notes for the training, I

Hello and welcome to the first edition of S.U.R.F.Throughout the year the team and I will use S.U.R.F to inform you of both the work we’ve done and of our plans to follow. This will ensure we’re kept on our toes as a team, as well as giving the “they do nothing but organise parties” people plenty to read about .On July 1st we officially took office and hit the ground running. Niall and Kenneth had already been here for a few weeks to cross-over so we were already well underway. The part timers were of huge assistance to us over the summer months including those who wouldn’t be residents of Tralee. The six of them took a lot of pressure off Niall, Kenneth and I which enabled us to get a lot more done. I’m very impressed and proud of the new team so far.To keep it brief the Summer months consisted of team bonding, U.O.S training, welfare workshops, numerous working groups, numerous national councils, cardiac first response training, re-designing of ITTSU’s website, launching of our first twitter and boards.ie accounts, camp out protest outside the department of the environment, numerous radio and newspaper interviews, hosting two grant and accommodation information evenings, complete revamping of our three offices, undergraduate meeting in google headquarters, canteen committee meetings, C.O visits to other colleges (both U.S.I and non U.S.I), revamping of the class rep’ system, freshers fortnight, orientation, numerous case work, academic council, governing body, EAAC, EARC, liaising with the crèche, residents committee meetings, student services meetings, the list goes on Our main issue at the moment is of course the upcoming budget. After numerous meetings with U.S.I and a very active class rep’ group of 2011-2012, we’re proceeding with a 7 step plan of action. As voted on by the reps’ further localised action is required to ensure our voice is heard. If you’re a student, parenting a student, related to a student, this concerns you. Get involved and make a difference, the time to act is now!...before it’s too late. Contact your class rep’ or the Students Union for more information. That’s all from me. If you have any suggestions to how we can improve the Students Union please don’t hesitate to contact me on [email protected] Have a nice day,Mike ThompsonPresidentI.T. Tralee Students Union

Hi all, just a quick round-up of some of the sporting events so far this semester. The sports year kicked off to a great start with clubs day proving to be a major success. Hundreds and Hun-

dreds of students’ signed up for sports across the 29 clubs.

The ladies soccer team have their first win of the season under their belt. The girls were 5-3 winners over NUIG on Wednesday after-noon. Scorers for Tralee on the day were Barbra, Karen, Ashling

and Caroline netted 2. Well done girls keep up the good workI.T.T Men’s soccer team were unlucky to lose out against C.I.T during the week. Left Mid-Fielder Fergal Mansuell got Tralee off to the perfect start sending the I.T.Tralee boys 2-1 up but C.I.T fought hard and got 3 goals back to come out on top. The Boys are out again Tuesday 18th October against W.I.T in Jackman Park, Limerick. Best of Luck lads!

The Men’s Rugby Team were out against C.I.T during the week but unfortunately it wasn’t to be their day. It was valuable game time and experience for all involved with the defence really coming out strong in the second half. The final result was C.I.T 26- I.T.T 7 The men’s hurling team are build-ing on their success from the Ryan Cup last year and came out comfortable winners over L.I.T Tipperary on Tuesday. The I.T.T

men led from the beginning and won on a final score-line of I.T.T 2-18 L.I.T Tipperary 1-9.

After winning the Division 2 league title last year the men’s senior football team are now competing at the highest division of

Third Level Colleges Gaelic football. The boys were out against UCC Wednesday evening. After a closely contested match the boys were unlucky not to get all three points from the encounter; a hearty team display from the ITT lads saw the game finish in a draw 1-7 to 1-7. This gives the management great grounds upon which to build for the upcoming year. The Fresher’s Footballers also had a tough encounter with UCC freshers during the week. The lads showed great courage, unity and

fought to the very end but lost out to a stronger side on the day.

The Ladies Footballers are out against Mary I in the first round of the league on Thursday 13th October. Best of Luck girls! The Outdoor Pursuits Club are surfing on Saturday 15th October. There will be a bus leaving North Campus at 2pm and Surfing will take place from 3pm-5pm in Banna. The cost for this enjoyable afternoon out is only €20; this includes a two hour lesson and all the surfing gear. Finally I would like to congratulate Sarah Milley (1st Year Health and Leisure) on winning the Junior Ladies Football Final at the weekend. Sarah is a member of the Wicklow team who were triumphant over New York. I would also like to congratulate Emma Morris (4th year Health and Leisure) who won the Intermediate Ladies Football All- Ireland on Sunday. Emma is a member of the Westmeath Team who after a close

Societies have gotten off to a great start this year with Societies Day being a huge success in both campuses. We had live animals from Wildlife, a gun show and camouflage from Airsoft, a 12 foot Harry Potter stand and a Tardis from SciFi, jugglers wandering around campus and BANGfm doing an Outside Broadcast (OB for those in the know). There was a huge uptake of members from all societies which is amazing.

Since Societies Day there have been great ideas and plans for various events. Some of these are with societies working individually and other societies are teaming up for events. At an all Socs meeting last Monday everyone discussed their ideas and plans. The main upcoming events are;LGBT are hosting The Big SEX Quiz in Stoker’s Lodge on the 25th of October same night as the Halloween Ball. It kicks off at 7.30pm. There are some great spot prizes lined up and fancy dress is optional, but advisable! €20 per table of four people.Because of the success of the Young Ag’s Farmer’s Ball it is being rolled out again. Get your wellies, shirt and farmer’s hat ready for the 8th of November. There is a possibility of live

animals on campus that day.

Radio Society are running a table quiz in the middle of November. Tune into BANGfm to hear more about this.

Other things in the pipeline are;

- UV Party ran by SciFi - Shooting competition ran by Airsoft - Young Ag’s are doing their annual Car Wash during the year

- Film Soc are looking for actors, cameramen and people interested in any part of the film making process. - SciFi are also in the process of making a short SciFi film.

Art society are going to be supplying a board for students to sign whatever they want with the intention of displaying this piece of art in college. At the moment societies holding weekly meetings are: - Art Thursdays 6.30pm R107. - Airsoft Tuesdays

6.30pm R106 and Thursdays 6.30 R100 - Photography Thursdays 1pm R102 - Sign Language Tuesdays 1.15pm B120 and Thursdays 1.15pm R100 - LOL Soc Wednesdays 1pm R100 - Film Monday 5pm S114 and Wednesdays 1pm S114 - Radio Mondays 1pm R100 - Net Soc Tuesdays 6pm T300 and T302 - Yoga Mondays 6.15pm and 7.15pm R107 - Dance Tuesdays 7pm Aerobics Studio SC - Salsa Thursdays 6pm Studio 2 SC - SciFi Mondays 5pm S110 - MAG Tuesdays 5pm T118 and Wednesdays 4pm T116

On a final note www.ittraleesocs.ie is currently being modified. Each Society is sending in a little blurb about them, what they do and what they’re about. The best way to keep updated is to keep an eye on your student emails for the regular updates of society meetings.

have applied for support under the student grant scheme, to appeal. The new board will include a representative from the Union of Students in Ireland. From the Journal:MINISTER FOR EDUCATION Ruairí Quinn has set up an independent board to review university grant appeals, in a move which has been welcomed by students’ unions. The inaugural Student Grant Appeals Board is to be established today, chaired by a former government official and comprising academics and education experts. It will allow students who have applied for grants for this academic year to have any appeals determined by one central, independent authority. Minister Quinn called the Board “an historic development in the area of student grants”.Before the Student Support Act was passed earlier this year, all student grants were awarded by 66 individual local authorities and VECs across Ireland, and appeals had to be directed to the student’s own awarding body. From September 2012, all student grant applications will be handled by one central authority, with the Appeals Board as a separate entity.Gary Redmond, president of the Union of Students in Ireland, this morning welcomed the move. He told TheJournal.ie: “We’re extremely happy. What this means for the average student is that they have someone independent to turn to, and grant criteria will be applied fairly and impartially to everybody.”He said previously, the criteria “might have been applied in slightly different ways across the awarding authorities”.The Board will be chaired by Maureen Waldron, former Secretary General of the Department of Social Protection. Its members will include Padraig McNamara, former chief of the State Examinations Commission; Dr Marie Clarke, head of education at UCD; Rebecca Murphy, former UCC Student Union welfare officer; and Brenna Clarke, retired professor of English at St Patrick’s College of Education.Minister Quinn said: “The experience and expertise that the members will bring to the process will be an important contribution to improving the grant experience for students.”

The High Court heard that current students could not legitimately have expected their grants to be cut by so much - in some cases seeing their grant cut from €6,100 to €2,445 as a result of the new boundary changes.USI President Gary Redmond said the Government encouraged school leavers to go onto college and mature students to return to education but that the recent grant cuts would force many of those to emigrate or onto ever increasing ‘dole’ queues.

Gary Redmond said:“The biggest victims of these cuts are students from the most financially disadvantaged backgrounds who rely on the grant to stay in education. If this cut is not reversed many of these students will have no choice but to drop out. This is yet another example of disjointed Government policies. While they claim to promote upskilling and building a smart, knowledge based economy the Minister for Education is threatening the future of up to 25,000 students.”Test casesUSI represented by Dublin based legal firm Mangan O’Beirne Solicitors is supporting a number of the cases of a number of plaintiffs as part of its legal action, including one example where a student has effectively been forced out of college entirely. The cut in her grant means she can no longer afford to live in Galway, where she studies – but public transport from her native Clare means she cannot make it to college until after 11am each morning.Redmond said that while students understand the country’s financial situation, a cut of 60 per cent was “unprecedented, savage and unjust” given that grants have already been cut by 5% in 2010 and a further 4% in 2011.In February, days before the general election, Ruairí Quinn, then Labour spokesperson on Education & Skills, signed a USI pledge promising that the Labour Party would not increase student fees or cut student grants in the next Government. The High Court has given the Minister for Education Ruairí Quinn; another 3 weeks to file a motion of opposition in the USI supported case re: grant cuts.

Grants Appeal BoardStudents who have been refused grants can now appeal to a new Grant Appeals Board. This independent board will allow students, who

USI held the Lobby of the Oireachtas on the 28th of September, during which USI officers and IT Tralee SU were given the opportunity to discuss student issues with a wide range of Government representatives. Here are some of the responses we received when lobbying. Jimmy Deenihan (FG) – Promised to engage with the Minister on the issues raised in the Lobby Document. We are still waiting his response on the actins promised.Aurthur spring (LB) – Writing a letter to the minister on Student Contribution Charge. We are still waiting his response on the actins promised.Michael Healy Rae (IND) – Raising parliamentary questions on: PQ on instalments of Student Contribution Charge. PQ on freeze on the Student Contribution Charge. PQ on the reversal of changes to criteria to qualify for the non adjacent rate of the grant. He has delivered on his promise.Senator Mary Moran (LB) – Raising questions at the Seaned on all 4 issues. She has delivered on his promise. We are still awaiting a response form more TD’s that we met that day. It is important to note that this is the first step in our national plan of action.

Court CaseStudents Launch High Court Challenge against ‘Savage’ Cuts to GrantsThe High Court has granted the Union of Students in Ireland (USI), the national union for Higher & Further Education students, leave to challenge a reform of student grants, which will see some students face cuts of over 60 per cent in their grants this year.USI had sought leave to judicially review changes to the new student grant scheme proposed in last year's Budget, which made major changes to the rules governing how far a student must live from college in order to receive a higher (non-adjacent) rate of grant payment. The last Budget replaced the 24 kilometres threshold with a new one of 45 kilometres - the Government claiming that improvements to public transport made it more feasible to commute to college from long distances.USI insists this is simply not the case and that thousands of current students are facing unmanageable cuts of over 60 per cent in their grants as a result.

it reaches a critical state.

Sagittarius (Nov 23 - Dec 21)You may have a variety of things to do week, and yet it's significant that you keep up the appearance of being a strong leader at work and at home. However, you might not know the exact recipe to make this happen. Forget about the how-to book filled with step-by-step instructions. Instead, reclaim your power by trusting your instincts.

Capricorn (Dec 22 - Jan 20)Your current dilemma pits your need for independence against your desire for relationship security. Unfortunately, there aren't any quick fixes to your deep cravings for a meaningful and spiritual connection. You may long to rediscover a missing sense of purpose that you set aside to climb a corporate or social ladder. Instead of expecting everything to make sense week, simply focus on the most immediate tasks and leave the bigger issues for another week.

Aquarius (Jan 21 - Feb 19)You have been moving quickly to keep up with all the social activities in your life. Now, however, it's time to slow down and reconnect with the more mundane aspects of your existence, such as work. But don't bother making big plans or looking too far ahead, or you'll just end up in a state of confusion. Save the dreaming for another week while you focus on the current daily grind.

Pisces (Feb 20 - Mar 20)Someone may not approve of what you are doing, but you aren't sure why. The more you investigate, the more convoluted the whole situation becomes. You may be ready to give up and simply let the winds of change carry you wherever they will. Unfortunately, your current obligations prevent you from escaping this week because other people are counting on you and you can't just run out on them.

non-essential purchase and focus on building trust instead.

Leo (Jul 24 - Aug 23)Attending to financial issues can take precedence over encouraging the whimsical dreams of others. As much as you might want to help a friend turn a fantasy into reality, don't let your concentration on the material world lapse. You may need to set aside some of your big-hearted generosity in order to get serious about money. Take care of business first so you can offer your support later.

Virgo (Aug 24 - Sep 23)You know what must be done this week, but might be paralysed with fear of doing something wrong. You have probably taken on a lot of responsibility at work, but when you return home later, you'll still need to handle unfinished domestic chores. Don't let all your running around during the week distract you from the important personal work that still needs to be addressed. Your desire for perfection doesn't need to get in your way.

Libra (Sep 24 - Oct 23)Your romantic dreams motivate you to take action, so you don't end up stuck in a world of illusions without achieving success. But accomplishing your goals may not bring you the recognition you want or the love you seek. Being caught up in an exciting flurry of emotions is invigorating, but it's still crucial to refocus on your core beliefs before taking care of business.

Scorpio (Oct 24 - Nov 22)Your issues about your family of origin are more pressing week, possibly bringing a tough situation to a head. Although you might prefer to sidestep a direct confrontation and move on, you can feel your emotions gaining in strength and you know something will have to give way. Naturally, it's healthier to express your concerns before they become serious problems. Resolve your differences quickly and aim to handle potential conflict before

HOROSCOPESAries (Mar 21 - Apr 20)You may be fast-talking early in the week, but you could grow tired of listening to the sound of your own voice and you might think that it's wiser to say nothing at all. However, withholding your desires can be as problematic as sharing too much information. Fortunately, you don't need to encourage a melodrama that evolves from an all-or-nothing strategy. Walk away from the internal tug-of-war and just appreciate every moment for what it is.

Taurus (Apr 21 - May 21)Financial pressures may turn a wonderful week into one filled with angst. It helps to remember that there are some things that are simply out of your control this week, including how much money you have on hand. Still, you're responsible for specific behaviours that can immediately affect the current situation. For example, spending less can truly work in your favour now. A conservative approach ensures that you'll have what you need tomorrow.

Gemini (May 22 - Jun 22)You might not be very cooperative this week, even if you care deeply for your friends and associates. You want others to be successful at whatever they choose to do, but you prefer to keep the energy low-key and not share your feelings. Although conserving your energy is a smart strategy, it won't hurt to just nod your head in approval so others, at least, know that you heard what was said. The best plan might be to take a bit of time to be alone so you can sort out your thoughts.

Cancer (Jun23 - Jul 23)The events of the week may raise issues of doubt about your chosen path but you have a way with words now and might choose to hide your uncertainties behind a mask of humour. Unfortunately, your desire to acquire something beautiful could create its own complicated story. Postpone a

IT Tralee secures more money for the students that are most in need!

There is a budget allocated to the HEA every year for the alleviation of issues surrounding access to education for disadvantaged students. This budget is spread between a number of funds

including the student assistance fund. This year for the first time the amount each college receives will be based on the following criteria a) 50% based on total student numbers, b) 50% based on

access student numbers e.g. disabled students, student from lower socio-economic backgrounds, mature students etc. to ensure that

the fund is targeted at those most in need.

It had initially been envisaged that the Student Assistance Fund would be allocated €5 million similar to last year, however; USI

and the HEA have been able to provide another €4 million to the fund for this year by reworking a number of other budgets. The

result of this is that the SAF will have a total of €9 million for the current academic year. Below we have included a table below which

outlines how much each college received last year, the additional amount and the amount that will be allocated this year. This is massive news for students in IT Tralee who are facing extreme

financial pressures.
