Thanks to IE Singapore, SPRING Singapore and all delegates for their support and close engagement in this business mission.

Special gratitude to ILFA for the meticulous care and hospitality extended to the SLA delegates in Indonesia, as well as coordinating and contributing to the success of this business mission.

Mission HighlightsDuring the mission, delegates were given the opportunity to meet with key business stakeholders, officials at each site and business prospects within the ILFA community. There were business matching dinners in both cities which offered networking as well as interactions amongst the delegates, ILFA member-companies and leading industry players.

In Surabaya, the SLA delegation enjoyed the unsurpassed hospitality of ILFA led by Dr Norbertus Hengky Pratoko, aside from his dedicated effort to pack the best itinerary during the short stay. The presentations on developments, lucid sharing during discussions as well as the enlightening tours at Pelindo III, PT Surabaya Industrial Estate Rungkut (PIER/SIER), Teluk Lamong Port, Java Integrated Industrial and Ports Estate (JIIPE) and Terminal Petikemas Surabaya (TPS), all provided good insights on the extend of development of the logistics industry in Surabaya.

In Jakarta, Mr Yukki Nugrahawan Hanafi – ILFA Chairman was instrumental in charting the entire programme with Mr Theo Kumaat who joined the trip from Surabaya on 19 January till we depart from the Jakarta airport on 23 January. Through the detailed presentations, exchanges on recent and future developments coupled with site tours at Cikarang Dry Port, Pelindo II, Jakarta International Container Terminal, IPC Car Terminal and Port of Tanjung Priok, Kawasan Berikat Nusantara (KBN), Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), Indonesian Customs Office and Angkasa Pura II Airport Terminal, the delegates are now better placed to assess the business opportunities in Jakarta and the region.

Indeed, it was a fruitful trip and feedbacks received from the delegates were generally positive. For some, the trip helped prep their own readiness and for others, gear up on their impending collaborations.

Heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) with a maximum laden weight (MLW) exceeding 12 tonnes and buses with MLW exceeding 8 tonnes will be required by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) to install additional blind-spot mirrors as part of the continuing efforts to improve road safety.

HGVs and buses typically have higher windscreens and window sills and therefore have blind-spots below the windscreen and at the passenger door. The additional mirrors will provide drivers with a better view of the area directly adjacent to the passenger side of the vehicle or below the windscreen. This will enable them to be aware of pedestrians, cyclists and other motorists near their vehicles, especially when turning at traffic junctions or changing lanes.

New HGVs registered from 1 April 2015 will need to comply with either the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe Regulation 46 or the Japanese Safety Regulation Article 44.

Existing HGVs and buses can either retrofit the additional blind-spot mirrors or fit a Fresnel lens on the passenger side window.

These new requirements will be checked at the vehicles’ periodic inspectionsfrom 1 October 2015. Non-compliant HGVs and buses will not be able topass the inspection.

For enquiries or assistance, please call LTA Hotline at 1800-2255 582.

In partnership with Caliberlink, Singapore Logistics Association (SLA) organized a recruitment cum networking event entitled, “Career & Life in Logistics & Supply Chain Sector” on 29 January 2015 at the Lifelong Learning Institute. The thematic recruitment afternoon session provided a unique opportunity for participating companies to meet and network with local mid-career professionals across various disciplines while sussing out the right talents for a second conversation.

Some 75 PMEs attended and they were mostly there to explore the career and life of a professional working in the logistics & supply chain sector. From their positive feedback, many received enriching insights from both industry speakers, Mr Thomas Chee - General Manager of Batamindo Shipping & Warehousing, and Mr Tong Yek Meng - Manager, Learning & Development from the YCH Group.

Mr Tong delved on the Human Resource aspects while Mr Chee touched on the 5 skill sets to enhance an aspiring professional’s chance of making the right or winning career transition: Core Functional Skills; IT Skills; Leadership Skills; Global Management

Skills; and Life Skills. He said, “ If you want to engineer your own career path in the logistics and supply chain sector, do not wait for all success factors to appear in your path, you need to go out and get them!” He ended his sharing with an inspirational thought, “Man’s flight through life is sustained by the power of his knowledge”.

9 companies set up booths on site, namely, CEVA Logistics Singapore, DHL Express (Singapore), GAC (Singapore), Global Projects Services, Kuehne + Nagel, SDV Logistics (Singapore), ST Logistics and YCH Group. They were the hiring employers and they lost no time in their recruitment drive to engage the PMEs following the presentations.

The event was hosted by Ms Charmaine Fu, an associate lecturer with The Logistics Academy and ended with Ms Ng Soo Hwa – SLA Executive Director presenting tokens of appreciation to Mr Chee, Mr Tong and Ms Fu.
