Message from the President
Welcome to Term 1! I hope you had a refreshing break and are ready for the year ahead.
We have been busy over the break moving to the new building. The new space is very
exciting and opens up many opportunities for us to support the mathematics community
onsite. You are welcome to pop in to see us in Building D (just across the carpark from our
old building). Stay tuned to hear about our Office Warming once we unpack all the boxes
and set up!
SACE has released the news that moderation is now online for all Stage 2 mathematics
subjects. There will be opportunity to discuss this change and its implications at the Year 12
Conferences in February. With a little preparation and planning we can make this process
smooth for teachers.
The April holidays take us into our Annual Conference. Our theme this year is “Engage and
Inspire” and we are excited to hear the keynote addresses already! The program will come
out shortly, so please consider submitting a proposal to present a workshop here if you
have something that will support this theme.
Helen Booth will start her role as MASA Professional Officer and we are thrilled to have her
on the team. She will be focusing on developing resources and professional learning. Feel
free to make contact if you need some mathematics support. Helen will also be
coordinating the Remote and Rural Schools Mathematics Program (RRSMP) this year. We
are looking forward to continuing to support the teachers we have visited so far and the
new ones we will meet this year.
I hope to see many of you this term at one of our events!

The Australian Challenge The International Mathematical Modeling Challenge (IM²C) is a new team-based mathematical
competition for Australian secondary students.
Operating in teams, comprising up to four students from the same school, participants must work
collaboratively to solve a problem (set globally) by devising and applying an original
mathematical model.
Constrained to a period of five consecutive days, teams unpack the given problem, hypothesise,
test, and develop a working solution, before preparing and submitting a report on their solution
to the Australian judging panel. The best two solutions then progress to compete against the
other participating countries on an international level.
Completely free to enter, the IM²C exists to support the real-world application of learning, build
proficiency, encourage collaboration, and challenge students to use mathematics to make a real
difference to the world around them.

MASA a Supplier of DUAL-Oh! Maths Card Games At the 2018 MASA Annual Conference, we were impressed by the Dual-Oh! Maths card games
developed by a West Australian Educational Consultant and MASA has become a supplier. The
rules are simple, but it is the maths that is increasingly challenging as you move through proficiency
from reception to upper primary level. The games can be played as simple or complex as you work
with students of different levels. Scale of prices make multiple purchases attractive.

Survey extended to Term 1 2020
Professional Development Opportunity for Years 5, 6, and 7
Maths Teachers in an International Research Project
Profs David Clarke (University of Melbourne) and Doug Clarke (Australian Catholic University) are
running a research project that studies mathematics teachers’ thinking processes during lesson
planning, teaching, and reflection. We are currently recruiting Years 5, 6, and 7 teachers to take
part in the project.
If you agree to participate in this project, you will be asked to adapt and teach a provided lesson
plan (Lesson 1) and then create a lesson plan yourself for a follow-up lesson and teach the lesson
(Lesson 2). You will also be asked to complete several online questionnaires before and after
teaching Lessons 1 and 2. Participation in this project will involve approximately 10 hours in total
(including the teaching of Lessons 1 and 2). Your time commitment in this project can count
towards your professional development to meet registration requirements if you are a registered
teacher in South Australia. (If you are registered in a different state or territory in Australia, your
participation time may still count towards your required professional development but please
check your local requirements.)
To register your interest in participating in the project or to find out more,
