Welcome to the 26th
Annual Jazz in the Woods
We’re excited that you’re here in Corporate Woods this weekend to celebrate
the 26th year of Jazz in the Woods. It’s remarkable to me that Jazz in the
Woods has grown into a marquee event for the Kansas City metro area and
this is due largely to the efforts of the Overland Park South Rotary Club.
Jazz in the Woods brings together folks of all ages and walks of life so that
they can sit back, relax and enjoy a weekend with the local and national
bands that love to perform under the stars. This is one of the largest,
admission-free events in the Midwest and it simultaneously provides a
family-friendly weekend of outstanding music while raising funds for local
charities that support the needs of Kansas City’s children. Jazz in the Woods
has raised over $1 million dollars in its 26 year span and 100% of those
dollars go directly to our designated KC Charities. For 2015, those charities
include Operation Breakthrough, Sunflower House, Growing Futures Early
Education Center and the Overland Park South Rotary Club’s “Future of
Hope” Foundation.
Last year’s donations were used to provide much needed services to the
most vulnerable in our city. For example, the Jazz in the Woods charities
were able to bring therapy to children with special needs, provide pre-
school and after-school opportunities to inner-city youth, and provide
food to those who struggle to make ends meet. The volunteers from these
charities and the volunteers from Overland Park South Rotary have given
countless hours to make Jazz in the Woods free for all the fans.
We are excited this year to introduce the opportunity to accept donations
via mobile pledging and hope to use this tool as a great avenue to raise some
funds for our charities. Please see page 5 for complete details.
We thank you for sharing your weekend with us and hope that you enjoy
the exceptional musical talent that Jazz in the Woods is bringing to Over-
land Park for this special weekend!

More than three decades after his earliest recordings, Lorber has come full circle. His new recording, “Haci-enda,” revisits a sound he helped pioneer. The album takes the experiment that he started with his GRAM-MY®-nominated CD, “Now is the Time’,” and his 2012
album, “Galaxy,” up a notch with 11 exciting and energetic new compositions performed by some of the biggest names in jazz today. Co-produced by Lorber and bassist/composer Jimmy Haslip, “Hacienda” also features saxophonist Eric Marienthal, a longtime collaborator with Lorber and his collective. lorber.com
A dynamic lead bass player from Kansas City, bassist Julian Vaughn is rapidly becoming a major player in the contemporary jazz genre. As an artist, he debuted on the scene in 2010 with his CD titled, “The Purpose Project,” an album
that would later pave the way to his 2012 album “Breakthrough.” Vaughn has had two top 10 singles on the Billboard charts. Vaughn stays current on industry trends but doesn’t try to write every song to fit the radio format. “I know what flavor works in the music industry but I don’t write all my material based on that. I write from my heart. Whatever is moving me at the moment is what dictates the end. I want to make music for the people not format,” explains Vaughn. “Music is my everything; that’s why I love doing what I do.” julianvaughnmusic.com
Taking their name from a small mountain town in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, DOTSERO means “Something Unique” accord-ing to Ute Native American legend to some. It means DOT-ZERO on
the earliest geographical railroad maps to others, but to jazz fans world-wide DOTSERO means Smooth Jazz at its best, full of life, energy and spontaneity that few artists in the genre have been able to match. DOTSE-RO is a no-nonsense sax and guitar driven thrill ride of energy and excite-ment. As much fun to watch as they are to listen to. dotseroband.com

EVENT SCHEDULE: FRIDAY, JUNE 19
Born in The Bronx to Puerto Rican immigrants, Spanish was Haslip’s first language and he learned to speak English in kindergarten. Haslip began playing drums and moved onto other instruments such as trumpet and tuba until playing bass at age 15. Although he took music lessons and even went to a private music school, Haslip considers himself self-taught.
Haslip is both an electric bass player and record producer, best known as a founding but ex-member of the pioneering fusion group Yellowjackets. He was also an early user of the 5-string electric bass. jimmyhaslipbass.com
Eric started his professional career in 1980 with famed New Orleans trumpeter Al Hirt. After returning to Los Angeles Eric became a member of the Chick Corea Elektric Band. He recorded six CD’s with Chick Corea’s band and received two of his five GRAMMY nominations. He’s won one GRAMMY award as part of the “GRP Super Live” CD.
Among Eric’s 13 solo CD’s, his latest is entitled “It’s Love,” on Peak Records. Nine of the songs that Eric has recorded have made it to the top 10 of the National Con-temporary Jazz Radio Charts and three have made it to No. 1. ericmarienthal.com
