Naturopathic Treatment There are several treatment modalities that a Doctor of

Naturopathy uses: Clinical Nutrition - Nutrition is a cornerstone of

Naturopathic practice. Many medical conditions can be treated more effectively with foods and nutritional supplements than they can by other means, with fewer complications and side effects.

Botanical Medicine - Many plant substances are powerful medicines. Where single chemically derived drugs may only address a single problem, botanical medicines are able to address a variety of problems simultaneously. There organic nature makes botanicals compatible with the body's own chemistry; hence, they can be gently effective with few toxic side effects.

Page 14: Support for Brain Injuryfremontcountybraininjurysupportgroup.jigsy.com/... · Relief of chronic pain Reduction in the symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia Antispastic

Naturopathic Treatment Homeopathic Medicine - Homeopathic medicine is

based on the principle of "like cures like". It works on a subtle yet powerful electromagnetic lever, gently acting to strengthen the body's healing and immune response.

Oriental Medicine - Oriental medicine is a complimentary healing philosophy to Naturopathic Medicine. Meridian theory offers an important understanding of the unity of the body and mind, and adds to the Western understanding of physiology. Acupuncture provides a method of treatment which can unify and harmonize the imbalances present in disease conditions, which if untreated, can result in illness.

Naturopathic Treatment Lifestyle Counseling - Mental attitudes and

emotional states may influence, or even cause, physical illness. Counseling, nutritional balancing, stress management and other therapies are used to help patients heal on psychological level.

Guided Imagery for reversing panic attacks, acute stress and PTSD. Dr. Allen is certified in the use of this technique.

Hormone Therapy – Bio-IdenticalsNeuroscientist Dr. Donald G. Stein and his colleagues have

been investigating this question and have discovered something remarkable — that the hormoneprogesterone confers profound neuroprotective effects that improve outcomes and reduce mortality following brain injuries.

Progesterone provides powerful neuroprotection to the fetus, particularly in late pregnancy, when it helps suppress neuronal excitation that can damage delicate new brain tissue. Dr. Stein and his colleagues have found that in addition to protecting the fetal brain, progesterone also protects and heals injured

brain tissue.

Massage Massage therapy involves the restoration of proper joint function of the

spine or extremities, and the strengthening of supporting muscles and soft tissues. Massage therapy stretches and loosens muscle and connective tissue, and improves blood flow and the movement of lymph fluid, speeding the removal of metabolic waste products resulting from exercise or inactivity, and allowing more oxygen and nutrients to reach the cells and tissues. Sensory receptors in the skin and muscles "wake up", bringing new awareness to areas that have felt "cut off" by chronic tension patterns.

Massage affects pain through the central nervous system. In one particular theory of pain called the "gate theory," messages of pain which normally travel from the injury to the brain, are blocked before reaching the centers responsible for interpreting pain. Massage helps stimulate and close the so-called gate of pain messages. As a result, the intensity of the pain perceived by the brain is decreased.

Page 18: Support for Brain Injuryfremontcountybraininjurysupportgroup.jigsy.com/... · Relief of chronic pain Reduction in the symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia Antispastic

MassageMassage can affect muscles directly by stimulating inactive muscles

whose inactivity is due to illness or injury. Deep continuous massage can relieve muscle tension and help prevent painful muscle spasms, which are common following injury. Also, massage can stretch and break down fibrous scar tissue that is not healing properly because it is not aligned to the adjoining muscle fibers.

Benefits include: increased circulation to promote healing, pain relief of spinal injuries and headaches by decreasing muscle tension, helps rehabilitate injuries by stretching connective tissues, relieves cramps and muscle spasms, and chronic stress, clinical depression, and anxiety can be greatly reduced with regular daily massage sessions.

Cranio-Sacral Therapy © 2008 The Upledger Institute, Inc.®

Cranio-Sacral Therapy (CST) was pioneered and developed by osteopathic physician John E. Upledger following extensive scientific studies from 1975 to 1983 at Michigan State University, where he served as a clinical researcher and Professor of

Biomechanics.CST is a gentle, hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing the

functioning of a physiological body system called the craniosacral system - comprised

of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain

and spinal cord.

Using a soft touch generally no greater than 5 grams, or about the weight of a

nickel, practitioners release restrictions in the craniosacral system to improve the

functioning of the central nervous system.

Lymph Drainage Lymph Drainage Therapy (LDT) is an original hands-on method of

lymphatic drainage developed by Bruno Chikly, MD, of France. Using exacting anatomical science and distinctive manual processes, LDT enables practitioners to detect the specific rhythm, direction, depth and quality of the lymph flow anywhere in the body. From there they can use their hands to perform Manual Lymphatic Mapping (MLM) of the vessels to assess overall circulation and determine the best alternate pathways for draining body-fluid stagnations.

Therapists work with flat hands, using all the fingers to simulate gentle, specific wave-like movements. These subtle manual maneuvers activate lymph and interstitial fluid circulation as well as stimulate the functioning of the immune and parasympathetic nervous systems.

Massage for TMJ About ten million Americans who suffer from such seemingly disparate

symptoms as headaches, earaches, tenderness of the jaw muscles, or dull, aching facial pain often share a common problem. They all suffer from what has come to be known as temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. These disorders can have a variety of causes and are believed to result when the chewing muscles and jaw joints do not work together correctly. In many cases, TMJ disorders can be successfully treated.

HOW THE CHEWING MUSCLES AND JAW JOINTS WORKThe structures that make it possible to open and close the mouth are very

specialized and work together when you chew, speak and swallow. These structures include the muscles, ligaments, bones and joints of the jaw.

Massage for TMJ Five pairs of muscles allow you to open and close your

mouth. They also control forward, backward, and side-to-side movements of the lower jaw. Also involved in these movements are the temporomandibular joints. Each of these important joints has two sections, connected by a disk, that make possible the hinge and gliding actions needed to open the mouth widely.

Any problem that prevents this complex system of muscles, ligaments, bones, and joints from working together properly may result in a TMJ disorder.

Massage for TMJ SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF TMJ DISORDERS

TMJ disorders have many signs and symptoms. Some of the most common include the following:

Pain in or around the ear. This pain often spreads to the face.

Tenderness of the jaw muscles.

Clicking/popping noises when one opens or closes the mouth.

Difficulty in opening one's mouth.

Jaws that get stuck, lock, or go out.

Pain brought on by yawning, chewing, or opening the mouth widely.

Certain types of headaches or neck aches

Massage for TMJ Although accidents such as injuries to the jaw, head or neck, or diseases such as

arthritis, may result in some TMJ problems, factors relating to the teeth and bite are also believed to be common causes of TMJ disorders.

Among these factors are the following:Oral habits such as clenching the teeth or grinding the teeth. These habits can tire

the muscles and cause them to go into spasm. The spasm causes pain, which in turn causes more spasm. The end result of this spasm-pain-spasm cycle may eventually be a TMJ disorder. Many people unconsciously "clench" their teeth during the day, often in response to unperceived environmental stressors.

Problems in the way the teeth fit together or bite. Improperly aligned teeth can sometimes place the chewing muscles under stress and cause them to go into spasm, thus setting off the harmful cycle described above.

Oral habits and problems with the bite often work together to cause TMJ disorders.

ReflexologyThe ancient healing art of reflexology has been known to man for many thousands of years. It was first practiced by the early Indian, Chinese andEgyptian peoples.

In 1913 Dr. William Fitzgerald, an American ear, nose and throat surgeon, introduced this therapy to the West. He noted that pressure on specific parts of the body could have an anaesthetising effect on a related area. Developing this theory, he divided the body into ten equal and vertical zones, ending in the fingers and toes. He concluded that pressure on one part of a zone could affect everything else within that zone. Thus, reflex areas on the feet and hands are linked to other areas and organs of the body within the same zone.

In the 1930's, Eunice Ingham, a therapist, further developed and refined the zone therapy into what is now known as foot reflexology. She observed that congestion or tension in any part of the foot mirrors congestion or tension in a corresponding part of the body. Thus, when you treat the big toes there is a related effect in the head, and treating the whole foot can have a relaxing and healing effect on the whole body.

ReflexologyThe body has the ability to heal itself. Following illness, stress, injury or disease, it is in a state of "imbalance", and vital energy pathways are blocked, preventing the body from functioning effectively. Reflexology can be used to restore and maintain the body's natural equilibrium and encourage healing.

A reflexologist uses hands only to apply gentle pressure to the feet. For each person the application and the effect of the therapy is unique. Sensitive, trained hands can detect tiny deposits and imbalances in the feet, and by working on these points the reflexologist can release blockages and restore the free flow of energy to the whole body. Tensions are eased, and circulation and elimination is improved. This gentle therapy encourages the body to heal itself at its own pace, often counteracting a lifetime of misuse.

Ayravedic & Quantum Healing Ayurveda is considered to be a form of complementary and

alternative medicine (CAM) within the western world, where several of its methods, such as the use of herbs, massage, and Yoga as exercise or alternative medicine, are applied on their own as a form of CAM treatment.[6]

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Quantum healing is healing the bodymind from a quantum level. That means from a level which is not manifest at a sensory level. Our bodies ultimately are fields of information, intelligence and energy. Quantum healing involves a shift in the fields of energy information, so as to bring about a correction in an idea that has gone wrong. So quantum healing involves healing one mode of consciousness, mind, to bring about changes in another mode of consciousness, body. --Deepak Chopra

QigongIt is similar to acupuncture, but it is something that the patient and

family can do for themselves rather than an outside practitioner. There are many types and methods.

The word Qigong (pronounced "chee gong") is a combination of two ideas: "Qi" means air, breath of life, or vital energy of the body, and "gong" means the self-discipline skill of working, cultivating, and balancing Qi. The art of Qigong consists primarily of the use of intention, meditation, relaxation, physical movement or posture, mind-body integration, and breathing exercises. Practitioners of Qigong develop an awareness of qi sensations (energy) in their body and use their mind to guide the Qi for improving their health, all of which can easily be learned by almost anyone. Medical Qigong has been extensively studied scientifically more than any other alternative therapy and it has been shown to be a cost-effective therapy.

QigongAlthough the term "Qigong" was coined around 1948,

Qigong is a self-initiated health practice that has its roots in pre-historic China. Ancient dao yin, nei gong, and yangsheng practices combined with other Taoist exercises to form the basis of Qigong. Qigong is a pre-cursor to but considered part of Traditional Chinese Medicine, along with herbal medicine, acupuncture, and acupressure. Qigong can be considered acupuncture without the needles because both practices involve manipulation and balancing of the body's energy. Qigong differs from acupuncture in that Qigong additionally includes cultivation and balancing over time of the body's energy through self-initiated practices

PrayerThe power of prayer on healing has long been debated but

pretty hard to prove to everyone’s satisfaction. The following are some excerpts from an ABC.com article on healing with prayer.

There have been over 190 studies on what they call "remote healing." One such study was conducted at the Mid America Heart Institute in Kansas City, Mo. Dr. Harris wanted to make his experiment impervious to any placebo effects. He did not tell patients they were being prayed for — or even that they were part of any kind of experiment. For an entire year, about 1,000 heart patients admitted to the institute's critical care unit were secretly divided into two groups. Half were prayed for by a group of volunteers and the hospital's chaplain; the other half were not.

Page 36: Support for Brain Injuryfremontcountybraininjurysupportgroup.jigsy.com/... · Relief of chronic pain Reduction in the symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia Antispastic

Prayer

All the patients were followed for a year, and then their health was scored according to pre-set rules by a third party who did not know which patients had been prayed for and which had not. The results: The patients who were prayed for had 11 percent fewer heart attacks, strokes and life-threatening complications.

Dr. Elizabeth Targ, a psychiatrist at the Pacific College of Medicine in San Francisco, has also tested out prayer on critically ill AIDS patients. All 20 patients in the study got pretty much the same medical treatment, but only half of them were prayed for by spiritual healers. Ultimately, 10 of the prayed-for patients lived, while four who had not been prayed for died.

PrayerI personally believe prayer helps and will continue to

pray. What if I am wrong, well it certainly does not hurt to be prayed for and I do think the act of prayer has a positive impact on the well-being of those doing the praying. I also know I gained a lot of strength from the care and concern of people who pray for me.

Simple Exercises –Breathing Want a diaphragmatic breathing exercise for energy, alertness and

clear thinking? This exercise is not only calming and relaxing but easy to learn and takes only a few minutes of your time. It's even helpful on headaches!

This one is also a brain exercise, because it promotes the creation of neural pathways — good for brain health, intelligence, creativity and general cognitive ability.

It's especially good for whole-brain functioning or whole-brain synchrony and hemispheric balance by thickening and strengthening the corpus callosum.

This corpus callosum is a broad thick band of brain tissue made of massive nerve fibers that acts as a bridge between the left and right hemispheres of your brain. It's what allows your hemispheres to communicate in whole-brain thinking.

Page 39: Support for Brain Injuryfremontcountybraininjurysupportgroup.jigsy.com/... · Relief of chronic pain Reduction in the symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia Antispastic

Simple Exercises - BreathingMost of us tend to be predominantly left- or right-brain

thinkers, creating an imbalance in hemispheric brain activity and development. Want a healthy brain? You have to develop whole-brain health, which translates into hemispheric balance.

Alternate Nostril Breathing is a technique that specifically promotes whole-brain development and hemispheric balance. When you breathe in through the left nostril, you are actually promoting right brain activity. Likewise, breathing in through the right nostril will activate the left hemisphere.

By alternating your breathing between left and right nostrils, you are creating healthy brain development. This brain exercise will help with mental clarity and alertness, giving you energy and vitality.

Guided Imagery – Visualization-Hypnosis – EFT Emotional Freedom Techniques Guided Imagery

Guided imagery is the use of relaxation and mental visualization to improve mood and/or physical well-being.

PurposeThe connection between the mind and physical health has been well documented and

extensively studied. Positive mental imagery can promote relaxation and reduce stress, improve mood, control high blood pressure, alleviate pain, boost the immune system, and lower cholesterol and blood sugar levels. Through guided imagery techniques, patients can learn to control functions normally controlled by the autonomic nervous system, such as heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, and body temperature.

One of the biggest benefits of using guided imagery as a therapeutic tool is its availability. Imagery can be used virtually anywhere, anytime. It is also an equal opportunity therapy.

The technique is induced by a therapist who guides the patient. The resulting mental imagery used is solely a product of the individual's imagination. Some individuals have difficulty imagining. They may not get actual clear images but perhaps vague feelings about the guided journey. However these individuals' brains and nervous systems responses seem to be the same as those with more detailed imaginings.

Patients who feel uncomfortable "opening up" in a traditional therapist-patient session may feel more at ease with a self-directed therapy like guided imagery.

Guided Imagery – Visualization-Hypnosis – EFT Emotional Freedom Techniques

Visualizaion also known as Meditation is an approach that anyone can use to help them cope with medical problems, stress, and anxiety by way of thought, contemplation, and reflection.

It encompasses a variety of practices that are somewhat different, while holding to the basic principles of consideration and quiet thought to bring about a state of rumination. Various types of visualization & meditation that are recognized include transcendental meditation, prayer, Zen meditation, Taoist meditation, mindfulness meditation, and Buddhist meditation. Some methods of may require the body being absolutely still or to be moved with controlled deliberation, while other types allow for free movement of the body. While the methods are different, the end goal of all types of meditation lead to a mind that is quieted and free from stress by the use of quiet contemplation and reflection.

Hypnosis is a relaxing, naturally occurring state of mind which happens to us every day. Each time we read a captivating novel, float off in a daydream or see an engrossing movie we are in a natural state of hypnosis.

For thousands of years people have recognized the power of hypnosis to enhance learning, heal emotional scars, improve performance, change habits and speed the healing process.

Guided Imagery – Visualization- Hypnosis – EFT Emotional Freedom Techniques Gary Craig. What is EFT? EFT is a powerful new discovery that combines two well

established sciences so you can benefit from both at the same time: Mind Body Medicine Acupuncture (without needles).

In essence, EFT is an emotional version of acupuncture wherein we stimulate certain meridian points by tapping on them with our fingertips. This addresses a new cause for emotional issues (unbalanced energy meridians). Properly done, this frequently reduces the therapeutic process from months or years down to hours or minutes. And, since emotional stress can contribute to pain, disease and physical ailments, we often find that EFT provides astonishing physical relief.
