8 –THE COOTAMUNDRA HERALD, Wednesday, December 11, 2013 THE COOTAMUNDRA HERALD, Wednesday, December 11, 2013 – 13 The Curtain & Blind Specialists FABRICS Desi s & Blinds Celebrating 40 years in business DESI’S Fabrics is a testament to the fact that great personalised service equals longevity in the world of small business. A much-loved Cootamundra institution Desi’s Fabrics will cel- ebrate 40 years of service to the Cootamundra District this Friday. Desi’s Fabrics Pty Ltd opened at 99 Wallendoon Street on Thursday, December 13 in 1973. Don and Neta Manwaring and Des and Mary Guthrie were the original proprietors of the busi- ness and John Harris was on staff. In September 1976, the busi- ness moved to 226 Parker Street (which is now CW Jewellers). The store has always prided it- self on being a family owned and operated business and Geoff Manwaring joined the business in January 1979 and is still there today. After a fire destroyed the busi- ness next door in 1982, they pur- chased 228 Parker Street and again moved, the larger premises allowing Desi’s Fabrics to expand their stock and services. They are still located here today. After more than a decade with the business John Harris resigned in December 1989 and moved from Cootamundra. Des and Mary retired from the business in June 1990 to take on a new challenge and Bill Manwar- ing and sister Wendy Bell joined the family business in April 1990. After years of dedication to customer service and growing their business, Don and Neta de- cided to retire from the business in August 2002, leaving the busi- ness in the capable hands of their children Geoff, Bill and Wendy. 2002 was also the year that Desi’s Fabrics secured the ex- pertise of Cheryl Collins, who is still a valued member of the team Bill left the business in June 2011 to persue other work inter- ests. These days Geoff, Wendy and CELEBRATING: Cootamundra’s Desi’s Fabrics celebrates its 40th birthday this Friday. Pictured are the cur- rent team Wendy Bell, Geoff Manwaring and Cheryl Collins. Cheryl are still provid- ing the same quality service that Coota- mundra and district res- idents have come to expect. The business un- dertakes a lot of work in surrounding districts and has travelled as far as Sydney, Melbourne and lots of towns and cities between. Initially Desi’s Fab- rics sold dress fabrics, haberdashery and man- chester. Over time the busi- ness went out of the dress fabrics and haber- dashery and expanded into giftware which is now a significant part of the business. Window furnishings and blinds have been, and continue to be, a major component of the business for the entire 40 years. Desi’s Fabrics still offer free measure and quotes and continue to provide the same first class personalised serv- ice, which began with Don, Neta, Des and Mary 40 years ago. Don said celebrating four decades is not only a milestone for the busi- ness but also for Coota- mundra. So what does Don put the business’ success and longevity down to? “It’s a hands on fam- ily business and every- body that has been involved has put a lot of time and dedication into it,” Don said. “It’s been a lot of hard work - it’s not just standing behind the counter. There’s been a lot of kilometres and a lot of curtains and blinds, we’ve travelled thousands and thou- sands of kilometres. “It’s been a long trip,” Don said. Don commented it was still fantastic to see Geoff and Wendy at helm. “It’s still as strong as ever and it’s wonderful to see that they are so in- terested,” Don said. Wendy paid tribute to their loyal customers who have been so sup- portive for four decades. During late night shopping tomorrow night Don and Neta and Des and Mary will be in store to help celebrate and to catch up with some of their old cus- tomers.
