GOOD Environmental Choice Australia (GECA) has announced the release of its newest standard for adhesives, fillers and sealants, which now covers a wider variety of products and sets a new environmental benchmark for the industry.

The new standard, which replaces GECA’s previous adhesives standard, now includes recognition for joint sealants and fillers, plus a stronger focus on industrial and commercial adhesives. GECA chose to expand the scope of the standard in response to increased demand from industry professionals for greater certification options.

Products can be certified under the Adhesives, Fillers and Sealants standard to demonstrate that they meet GECA’s strict criteria for lower environmental impact, human health and safety, and ethical working conditions for workers.

Key criteria in the updated standard include:• products must not contain substances which have been classified as known

carcinogens, toxins, mutagens, or toxic to reproduction;• heavy metals, such as lead, cadmium, chromium, arsenic and others, must not be

intentionally added to the product;• products which may lead to the release of respirable powders/dust (eg, products

such as fillers which may be sanded) must not contain any added crystalline silica (quartz) or mica. If used, effective measures must be in place to control exposure of workers;

• the final product must only contain limited amounts of volatile organic compounds (VICs). Formaldehyde or formaldehyde-shedding substances must not be intentionally added to a product;

• emissions to air and water during the manufacturing process must be effectively managed and documented. there must also be waste minimisation and energy management procedures in place;

• limits on substances toxic to aquatic life. This new standard has been submitted to the Green Building Council of Australia

(GBCA). Once approved, products certified under it can contribute to achieving points under the relevant GBCA’s Green Star tools.●

A new collaboration between Australia’s furniture and joinery manufacturers and designers has formed to assist in creating a globally recognised “brand Australia” to boost the profile of Australian-made furniture.

META, a collaborative network of manufacturers and researchers, has partnered with the Furniture Cabinets Joinery Alliance (FCJA) to launch the META Furniture Cabinet and Joinery Hub, which brings together business leaders from across the Australian furniture industry in an effort to share ideas and enhance local collaboration.

Through the Hub, Australian furniture designers, manufacturers and researchers will develop an industry growth plan to raise the profile of Australian-made products both here and abroad.

META Managing Director, Zoran Angelkovski, said the Hub will help

refine the strategies and projects for furniture manufacturers to foster ongoing growth.

“The furniture, cabinet and joinery industry employs over 130,000 people in Australia and contributes $33 billion annually to the nation’s economy,” Mr Angelkovski said.

“It is one of our major manufacturing industries, but the majority of companies are small or micro-businesses meaning the work is dispersed and very little collaboration occurs. The Hub will help industry provide a more holistic, end-to-end offering for customers, bringing together manufacturers of furniture, in-built cabinets, kitchens, bathrooms, windows, doors as well as shop and office fittings.

“This collaboration will form the basis for a unique Australian signature profile which can be promoted and recognised in international markets.”

According to Darren Doggett,

Managing Director of retail fit-out company Clarke & Doggett Building Concepts: “There has been a race to the bottom for many furniture manufacturers in terms of price and certainly in the last five to seven years there has been a monumental shift in our clients importing their fixtures and fittings.

“Australia doesn’t have an established or recognised manufacturing brand the likes of Germany and Italy. We are innovative but, as yet, we are not very good at mobilising ourselves to successfully develop and promote our brand.

“The hub has generated energy around the industry and helped bring together a diverse sector which wouldn’t have come together as effectively as it now promises. The Hub provides a great opportunity for businesses and the industry on a whole to collaborate and in turn grow.” ●

INTEGRATED Joinery Solutions has announced the appointment of Peter Duff to the newly created role of General Manager.

Peter’s appointment is a result of the incredible growth experienced by Integrated Joinery Solutions over the past 12 months.

He comes to Integrated Joinery Solutions with a wealth of industry experience as a qualified cabinetmaker for over 38 years. He has successfully owned and managed numerous businesses including office furniture, solid surface fabrication, general cabinetmaking and software. “I am getting in on the ground floor of what will be the benchmark software in our industry. This is very exciting and fulfilling for me, and I am looking forward to meeting and helping manufacturing business owners become more efficient and profitable. The 24 to 28 May period has been chosen to keep Xylexpo − that will celebrate its 25th edition − safely away from Ascension Day (Thursday, May 5) and Whitsun (Sunday, May 15), both popular holidays in German-speaking countries, as well as in France and the Netherlands.

“We have fixed a calendar to allow as many industry people as possible

Nover staff and delegates returned from a recent trip to Vanuatu reporting another wildly successful Star Partner program.

Nover’s Star Partner program

News

The annual program, offered to all eligible Nover customers, saw delegates travel to the tropical paradise of Vanuatu in September 2014. Staying at the beautiful Warwick Le Lagon Resort, guests were treated to unspoiled tropical waters, group dinners, a selection of fun activities, unparalleled networking opportunities and the chance to completely relax with their families and industry peers.

The Vanuatu experience involved a range of activities including helicopter rides, dune buggies, snorkeling, ocean walks, kayaking, cultural tours, an island themed gala dinner and a very special ‘build a bike’ event, during which, Star Partners built children’s bikes as a team activity. These were then presented to a group of local children who had never had a bike before.

The whole experience was great fun and extremely rewarding.

“Nover’s Star Partner program is the largest customer-based conference

program held within the industry – with an average attendance of 200 to 300 delegates each year,” explained Daniella Laurenzi, Nover’s Marketing Manager.

“The program continues to lead the way as our industry’s most recognised and rewarding loyalty program.”

In 2011, delegates enjoyed a trip in Bali, in 2012 it was a luxury resort in Fiji, in 2013 delegates were treated to a trip to the picturesque location of Rotorua, New Zealand and in 2014 delegates jetted off to the tropical paradise of Vanuatu. 2015 will see Nover’s Star Partners packing their bags for four nights in the adventure capital of Queenstown in New Zealand.

“The Star Partner program is an ideal way for our hard working customers and business owners to get away for a short break – with everything taken care of, including flights, accommodation, meals, activities, entertainment and all other arrangements. It’s an ideal getaway for busy people, where Nover and a dedicated conference management team look after everyone to ensure a fantastic experience,” said Daniella.

THE Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) has launched Energy Star qualified windows in consultation with the Window Association of New Zealand (WANZ) and Building Research Association of New Zealand (BRANZ), to ensure a technically robust certification process.

EECA Senior Technical Advisor Christian Hoerning said Energy Star qualified windows will give homeowners assurance about the energy efficiency of their windows, adding that an Energy Star qualified window must have a minimum R value of 0.32 for an individual window or a house lot, reducing heat loss by more than 18% compared to standard aluminium framed double glazing.

“Energy Star qualified windows are a step up in thermal performance over standard aluminium framed double glazing and will make houses warmer and more comfortable.”

BRANZ Senior Scientist, John Burgess said the Energy Star qualified windows programme is open to all manufacturers and suppliers.●

AMERICAN hardwood exports to Australia and New Zealand have reached a record high.

Recent export figures show that January to September 2014 was the most successful period to date for American hardwood lumber exports to Australia and New Zealand. Australia saw a 54% increase in volume to 10,323 m3 and a 46% value increase compared with the same period in 2013. New Zealand also saw growth of 26% volume and 31% value in the same period.

Roderick Wiles, Director for the American Hardwood Export Council for Oceania said of the news: “We are increasingly contacted by Australian and New Zealand designers and architects who are considering using American hardwoods in their work. White oak and ash are the perennial favourites, but many are exploring working with the less well known US species, including tulipwood and red oak.

“Above all, American hardwoods have compelling, and proven, environmental credentials, which is, rightly, a high priority for all designers and specifiers now.”.●

The roughly six thousand accredited operators from 95 foreign countries who arrived in Pordenone for the SICAM fair indicate that, compared to the German operators that still hold first position, interest is rapidly growing from the Russian market.

Well over four hundred operators arrived from Russia (just under 7% of the total), and another 1000 from the other republics of Central and Eastern Europe – mainly Poland, Serbia and Ukraine.

There has also been a significant increase in operators visiting from several North African countries such as Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco: a sign of the opportunities that these emerging markets represent for the components and accessories sectors that are present at the SICAM fair.

Carlo Giobbi, organiser of the event in Pordenone, said:

“Every year, innovations in design and materials are presented at the fair because the components and accessories sectors are ever-changing and live on generating innovation at a fast pace.

“The entire global furniture sector benefits from this, in particular the future product lines to be presented at the spring edition of the exhibition. Each country, with its industries, is able to find at the fair those ideas and solutions that will allow it to emerge into the international arena.”

While industrial manufacturing companies (44%) are those most present at the fair, 20% of the registrations related to the handicraft industry. If the number of visitors has increased slightly compared to the previous edition, the increase in the number of companies that visited SICAM 2014 is even more

evident. In analysing the registrations, more than 6500 different companies were present.

In 2015, the fair will be held in Pordenone from 13 to 16 October. SICAM will also be present in 20 trade fairs around the world including Iran, India, Brazil, Mexico, Germany,

Indonesia. The attention is, therefore, already on various emerging countries, where an increase in participation is expected, as well as on countries that are traditionally a reference point for business relationships of many of the exhibitors, as is the case of Germany for example. ●

A strong turnout of 120 participants took part in this year’s CMA WA – Planit Golf Day on 7 November.

Perth’s weather once again delivered, covering the golf course with sunshine. This year’s event was supported by major sponsor Planit Cutting Edge Solutions, as well as silver sponsors including Woodworking Machinery Services and Apollo Risk Services.

A new inclusion for this year’s event was raising money for the Variety Children’s Charity with a total of $480 raised. Part of the fundraising was the display of Car 44 from the 2014 Trans Australia Bash WA, which belongs to CMA WA member, Sam Cirillo from Kenwick Cabinet Works. It provided an interesting point of conversation during the day.

After lunch the 30 teams made their way to their starting hole as part of the Ambrose format. Utilising Wembley’s new Tuart Course, players enjoyed a relaxed day away from the factory. With a variety of skill levels on show, everyone had a good laugh watching selected teams constantly trying to find their golf balls in the scrub, as well as admiring the skills of more regular players.

Eric Lytton, Executive Director for the CMA WA, commented that: “Many of the cabinet makers and suppliers came up to let me know how much they enjoyed the day. This year’s golf day was certainly one of the best days we’ve had”.

His comments were supported by Alan Gibson (Western Australia Territory Manager for Planit), who commented: “It was a great day – great for Planit to show our support of the cabinet making industry as well as catching up with everyone”.

The day concluded with a social dinner and drinks, with the opportunity to network and socialise with others in the industry. Last year’s winners, Kitchen Craftsmen, had to settle for second place with the Anthony Johns Cabinets taking out first place. STD Kitchens claimed third place whilst Lincoln Sentry also took out the infamous NAGA prize.●

Once again Grass has demonstrated its ability to anticipate trends with two new additions to the Tiomos range. Both of these movement innovations give particularly demanding door applications the unique high-tech functionality of Tiomos.

With their feel for the design trends of tomorrow, the product developers from Grass now present Tiomos Mirro and Tiomos M9: two versions of the unique hinge system Tiomos for glass and mirror glass doors as well as for wooden doors with slender proportions or mitred application on all four sides.

Three years ago, Tiomos won an honourable mention in the Red Dot Award 2010 for its outstanding logic of detail. The jury was thoroughly impressed by the sophisticated inner workings of the hinge arm, which conceals the integrated damping technology that allows tool-free adjustment as well as enabling furniture doors to be opened with exceptional ease.

This is also the striking feature of the latest two versions: Tiomos Mirro and Tiomos M9. Developer and product

manager Tarek Utturkar explained: “Within the Tiomos range, we have created genuine milestones for special design solutions with the two front connectors. This enables Tiomos to meet the toughest challenges in modern bathroom and living spaces.”

Tiomos Mirro for mirror and glass doorsWith Tiomos Mirro, the hinge system is fixed to a stainless steel adapter on the door using an eccentric screw. That means no drilling of the glass. The hinge arm can also be fitted to existing self-adhesive adapters without any problem.

Impressive double

Unique: Soft-close damping inside Tiomos Mirro also enables the use of the proven, fully integrated soft-close damping for glass and mirror doors. The entire damping technology is concealed inside the hinge so that the hinge is outwardly identical – either with or without soft-close damping.

Slender materials its strong point: Tiomos M9Sensitivity and strength are also united in Tiomos M9. Specially conceived for use with very slender furniture doors and mitred application on all four sides, Tiomos M9 features an extremely shallow hinge cup. Even with a front thickness of just 10 millimetres, the unique hinge system remains solidly seated in any position.

High-tech functionality in modern furniture designDespite the fact that each of the two new Grass products is designed for a highly specific use, both offer the unrivalled Tiomos comfort. That includes not only the three-dimensional adjusting facility and stepless height adjustment, but above all the ingenious kinematics, which ensure that furniture doors open with unprecedented ease. ●

Over 200 design-savvy guests attended the KBDi Designer Awards 2014 gala event in Brisbane in August, where members, sponsors and guests celebrated the ‘inspiration, innovation and imagination’ of Australia’s finest kitchen and bathroom designers.

The winners of the three major awards of the evening had plenty to celebrate – their highly-esteemed awards not only position them at the top of their field, but secure them each a place on the KBDi Designers International Tour next year. The trio will be visiting IMM/LivingKitchen 2015 in Cologne and Maison&Objet Paris in January – they’re packing their coats and scarves and preparing for the trip of a lifetime!

Darren JamesQueensland designer Darren James, of Interiors by Darren James, accepted the highly esteemed award of KBDi

Australian Certified Designer of the Year 2014 at the end of a very successful evening, after collecting trophies for both KBDi Designer – Large Kitchens Queensland 2014 and KBDi Kitchen Designer of the Year 2014 – Queensland.

Darren presented two stunning kitchens as per the requirements for the category of Certified Designer of the Year. In the first project, the clients’ brief was met and exceeded with an excellent design solution. They wanted the kitchen to be the visual centrepiece for the living area, and a space where they could cook, eat and entertain and Darren achieved this with a visually stunning and practically laid out design.

In the second project, the clients dreamed of a gourmet kitchen that would accommodate their intense love for cooking and reflect the beautiful surroundings of their acreage property.

The designer responded with a beautiful design solution that oozes warmth and invitation, without compromising on cooking practicalities.

The KBDi Certified Designer’s documentation was flawless and a perfect representation of the standard required for this category. All plans and specifications were clear, concise and technically correct, and compliant with Australian Standards. The projects presented were designed and finished with extraordinary attention to detail and stunning aesthetic finesse, making the designer the obvious winner of the coveted title of Australian Certified Designer of the Year.

The award for KBDi Australian Certified Designer of the Year 2014 was proudly sponsored by Lincoln Sentry.

Liam MurphyNew South Wales designer, Liam Murphy, made his way to the stage early in the evening, collecting the award for KBDi Designer – Medium Kitchens NSW 2014. He returned shortly after to take out the title of KBDi Kitchen Designer of the Year 2014 – NSW, before accepting the prestigious title of KBDi Australian Kitchen Designer of the Year 2014.

The judges were suitably impressed with the high level of documentation supporting Liam’s winning project. The striking kitchen design wowed the panel, and the designer’s meticulous attention to detail was evident in every aspect.

The clients’ wish to have an island that ‘looked more like a piece of furniture’ was certainly granted – a

mirrored kick gives the island a sense of weightlessness, while a clever installation of drawers ensures it remains a functional part of the kitchen, too. Finishes were beautifully balanced, with the contrasting tones of the Espresso Linea veneer and Vivid White cabinetry being skilfully drawn together with a Corian Clamshell benchtop.

The KBDi 2014 kitchen awards were proudly sponsored by registered training organisation, Designer Training Pty Ltd.

Darren GennerDesigner Darren Genner of Minosa – last year’s KBDi Australian Bathroom Designer of the Year – continued his winning streak by collecting a number of awards. The first of the evening was the accolade for KBDi Designer – Small Bathrooms NSW 2014, followed soon after by the award for KBDi Designer – Large Bathrooms NSW 2014.

Darren’s entry in the large bathroom category then went on to secure him the title of KBDi Bathroom Designer of the Year 2014 – NSW and the coveted title of KBDi Australian Bathroom Designer of the Year for the second year running.

Design prowess and acute attention to detail are the key attributes of Australia’s finest designers, and this designer has ticked both the boxes with his winning bathroom design. The clients had very specific desires for a modern and contemporary styled bathroom with a ‘touch of bling’, to match their recently completed renovations. Their existing bathroom space had limitations – the area was narrow and dominated by a large colonial style window that could not be altered. The designer successfully manipulated the challenging area, meeting the practical needs of the homeowners and conquering the physical constraints of the space. He then completed the room with a stunning combination of finishes and features that pleased both the clients and the judging panel.

The KBDi bathroom awards were proudly sponsored by Pytha 3-D CAD Systems.●

Sublime Architectural Interiors has been recognised as one of the world’s best, winning the Asia Pacific Best Kitchen Design at the 2014 International Design and Architecture Awards in London, UK.

The awards are hosted by design et al, a leading UK interior design magazine with the aim of commending international design and recognising talent.

Design director, Kim Duffin, was recognised for his work in transforming a derelict set of flats in Annie Street, New Farm, Queensland into a magnificent home. He was up against international design firms from China, Singapore and India.

While this is the first international design award won by Mr Duffin, it takes his award tally to over 80 regional, national and international awards in eight years.

“Being recognised at an

international level is something all Australian designers aspire to. The design community here in Brisbane has really come of age and is up there with the world’s best,” he said.

Mr Duffin said that despite winning Australian Kitchen Designer of the Year five times, this award win is especially exciting as it is a stepping stone into the exploding Asian market.

“It was a privilege to be able to breathe new life into an old character home. This project highlights how our lifestyle revolves around our beautiful climate and that the blur between indoor and outdoor living is a necessity in our daily lives.

“My wife, Rebecca and I are thrilled to be recognised at this level. We have a great in-house team of six to thank, in addition to our suppliers and the ancillary tradesmen that worked on the project.”●

A second generation hinge with integrated damping, the Titus ST-i2 and Basic-i2, is designed to satisfy the furniture user’s requirements for a gentle, silent, fast and safe door closing.

Its sleek design with hidden fixing screws enhances the look of the furniture. The design follows the concept of the proven Glissando add-on hinge soft closing system, widely recognised for its consistent and reliable damping action.

An easily accessible adjustment button and an intuitive procedure of the damping adjustment provide consistent soft closing on a variety of furniture doors. It is available for the whole range of ST ‘snap-on’ 110 hinges and Basic ‘slide-on’ 110 hinges, and uses the standard ST and Basic mounting plates and requires no change to current drilling specifications.

Glissando TL 170 The new Glissando TL add-on hinge damper for hinges with wide opening angle assures a life-long reliable performance and a confident close of the furniture door: gentle, silent, fast and safe. The tool-free mounting enhances the user experience and facilitates its use. An easily accessible adjustment button and intuitive adjusting procedure of the damping action provides a consistent soft closing on a wide range of furniture doors. A detachment guard assures perfect attachment and secure functioning in the life-cycle of the product.

ST-i2, Basic-i2 and Glissando TL 170 are members of the growing Titus family of furniture soft closing solutions, which includes add-on, stand-alone and integrated hinge damping solutions as well as universal damping systems for metal boxes and wooden drawers.●

Winner in the Timber Veneers category of the 2014 Australian Timber Design Award was the residents’ lounge in The Quays development, located in Melbourne’s Docklands.

The Quays provides one, two and three bedroom apartment living and the residents’ lounge offers boardroom facilities, a cinema lounge and a private dining room.

Architects McBride Charles Ryan (MCR) explained that The Quays is a

massive project “housing the number of people you might find in a country town”. Timber is sometimes left out of such large high rise projects, but was specifically chosen for The Quays to help to humanise the interior, in particular the residents’ lounge.

Spotted gum veneer was used extensively, with smaller areas of American white oak and Tasmanian oak. Seating was designed with crown cut and quarter cut spotted

gum, random matched, with solid spotted gum edging for wear resistance. Boardroom panelling also features crown cut spotted gum veneer.

MCR Architects particularly commented on the flexibility that timber veneer provided, allowing for full expression of the design aesthetic – natural, stained black, or stained red, timber veneer suits many moods. ●

Waste

Sometimes you find cultural history in unexpected places – for instance when you look at the history of separating household waste. It too provides an indication of what people’s lives were like in certain epochs. Even in ancient Rome, waste was separated and recycled. Back then and for long periods throughout history, however, this was not based on ecological considerations. Instead, it was driven by a shortage of resources and enabled certain materials to be used again.

When people rose to affluence after World War II, the amounts of waste they generated grew. But the oil crises and ecology movements of the 1970s put a stop to that. People started thinking about the concept of recycling – this time motivated by ecological reasons as well. However, it was still quite some time until sorting waste became required by law.

In Europe, recycling and sorting waste has become part of everyday life. The member countries of the EU have set themselves the target of achieving a 50% recycling rate by 2020. Whilst some countries already satisfy this quota, others will probably fail to meet the target. Recycling concepts are implemented all over the world, although in very different ways. And besides influencing consumer behaviour, that affects the way kitchen waste systems are designed as well.

The Swiss, for instance, buy something called a Kerichtsack with a volume of 35 litres. The price of the garbage bag already includes charges for the collection and subsequent recycling of the waste it contains. The system has its advantages: the Swiss only pay for the waste they actually generate – although of course it also means that the bin has to have a volume

of 35 litres as well so as to make the most of the bag’s capacity.

In other countries it’s common practice to separate one’s own waste at home. Residual waste, organic waste, plastic and packaging are collected in different containers. In England, people get a grant if they separate their waste into three 10-litre containers. In Germany and Italy, waste disposal is organised at local level: in some municipalities, unsorted waste is put out on the street in bins or sacks, in others it is separated beforehand.

Waste systems manufacturers are responding to these different requirements with flexible solutions. Vauth-Sagel, for instance, offers three families of products

whose common ground lies in their modularity. Whether consumers need the Swiss variant or separate their waste at home, Vauth-Sagel provides convenient kitchen solutions for any waste disposal model. The systems from Hailo, Naber and Blanco also reflect the trend towards individual configurability. Some of the models are even dishwasher-safe or come with odour-absorbing lids for organic waste.

Kitchens are well-equipped to achieve a 100% recycling rate. But for all the progress being made in this area, there’s still something citizens could do better: avoid waste completely. That doesn’t just make ecological sense, it saves many a trip to the bin as well. ●

Hideaway Bins has reached a milestone of 10 years of distribution in Australia and aims to continue the strong relationships with its distribution partners.

A family owned and operated company, Kitchen King Ltd is proud to have reached the milestone of 10 years of distribution of Hideaway Bins in Australia – something of which the father and daughter team of Allen and Jamie Bertelsen is incredibly proud.

Together they have worked alongside their valued distribution partners Hettich, Nover and Galvin Hardware to promote Hideaway Bins and gain awareness of the product in the market place.

The innovative hidden storage solutions have gained momentum year on year as the Hideaway Bin brand has become known as

a quality storage solution for the residential market.

“A Hideaway Bin provides a simple answer for storing waste and recycling within a kitchen, hygienically disposing of bathroom waste or sorting whites from colours in the laundry,” said Jamie. “Having a broad range of hidden bin offerings and price point options has seen Hideaway Bins become a brand of choice for all types of residential projects such as in apartments, high end kitchens and designer laundries.”

The commitment to using high quality materials in manufacture has secured Hideaway Bins a place

in large commercial specifications. Hideaway Bins are frequently specified in commercial office kitchens as recycling stations and also office work stations to assist in keeping desks clear, both installations promoting a green office environment.

The powder coated zinc-treated steel framework ensures the unit is strong and robust but is also easy to clean in a fast paced environment. Running on high quality with a dynamic weight loading of 52kgs ensures that a Hideaway Bin is a product that can be trusted to live up to the pressures of a commercial environment.

Both Jamie and Allen know that the success of Hideaway Bins is down to their strong relationships with their distribution partners and the support they provide ensuring that Hideaway Bins are sold and delivered to customers throughout Australia.

With the business being based in New Zealand the realisation of 10 years of business in Australia is something to be celebrated and the long history is testament to the quality of Hideaway Bins. The Bertelsen family is grateful for the high level of support provided by its distribution partnerships.●

Skill 1536 stars as creator of elaborate movie sets for busy Gold Coast factory.By Jim Bowden

In the Disney movie, actor Jeremy Sumpter as Peter Pan flies down a grand staircase erected at Warner Bros Movieworld on the Gold Coast.

In The Railway Man, actor Colin Firth as prisoner-of-war Eric Lomax meets Pattie Wallace, played by Nicole Kidman, in a railroad car, an authentic 1940s replica.

Certain sets on these movies, including those used as ‘hero items’, were produced by Tony Phillips at his Gold Coast factory on what he terms the “beating heart” of his workshop, a Biesse Skill 1536 G FT CNC router.

“We went for this machine (and when I say we, I also mean the guys on the floor who complete orders to exacting specifications and must approve the technology)

because technical capability is important and good service and technical support are paramount in a business that often works around the clock,” Tony said.

He has grown with his business, Intone Projects at Burleigh Gardens, Queensland, realising a dream he had 28 years ago as a 16-year-old apprentice cabinet maker.

Intone now employs 22 staff and is looking to recruit more to meet a steady uplift in production from small shop fronts and movie sets to the latest, biggest and most ambitious project – a total fit-out of the new Harris Scarfe 2700 m2 retail store at the Westfield shopping complex, Carindale, Brisbane, which will be completed in early December. This includes flooring, shelving, point-of-

sale counters, change rooms and shop fronts.

“You need imagination to create products for jobs like this, especially the elaborate designs and shapes required for movie sets, so with this machine, the Biesse Skill 1536, we can create anything you can imagine,” Tony said.

Intone Projects also cuts different materials, such as complete signage packages, from full colour vinyl supply and application through to fabricated letters with led lighting and 3D motion outdoor signs.

Production in the factory keeps pace with demand and up to four work teams are installing on site at any one time, often completing architectural joinery, cabinet

making, solid timber work and lettering at night to avoid interruption of clients’ daytime trading.

“Much of our work pushes the design boundaries,” Tony said. “That’s why we need to be very systematic in our production flows or we can easily have staff sitting around waiting.

“Because of the size of the operation and variety of work, we also need a machine that is going to operate trouble free and one that is backed by an instant support service that keeps downtime to a minimum. So the Biesse buy was a good decision.”

Intone Projects had another issue – it had large contracts to process and needed a machine that could be

installed quickly, rather than being built in Europe and then shipped out.

“When we installed the machine about three years ago, Biesse fulfilled all of these requirements; they had a range of machines that could be custom-built to our needs and they had stock on hand that could be commissioned straight away,” Tony said.

“And of course, price was important.”

Tony said the tooling set up was great for handling differing materials; existing software didn’t need to be altered and was compatible with the new machine. Also, the table size at 3600 mm x 1500 mm was just right

for Intone, allowing the processing of most board sizes.

“I was impressed by the Biesse Australia representatives – firstly when we were looking at our options, and secondly they had the answers to any questions straight away.”

The Skill G FT series, the new generation of gantry CNC machining centres, is designed for nesting applications, which allow great flexibility of use for the processing of panel and solid wood elements. Rivelino D'Souza knows a lot about the Felder brand. He ought to, he's got a factory full of them. And not just the smaller machine's we've all been used to. No, Lulu, as he likes to be called, has taken advantage of Felder's Format-4 range of exciting, quality machines designed to meet the most demanding and technical needs of the furniture and cabinet manufacturer.

His new premises in the Melbourne suburb of Tullamarine is a virtual Felder showroom and includes a range of classic Felder machines. The company also owns several high-spec (Felder) Format-4 machines including a four-and-a-half axis CNC nesting machine and a brand new zero-joint edge banding machine that is one of only five in the country. A European-made Felder panel feeding system will be installed early in the New Year to fully automate this impressive array of equipment.

Lulu arrived in Australia in 2005 and started working in the commercial kitchen industry. Already qualified with India's most prestigious technical institute, he started working weekends from home and soon developed a reputation for quality and know-how.

Within two years his client base outgrew his part-time

garage workshop and it was time to start his own full-time business; Chryselle Cabinets and More. The "more" paid homage to Lulu's ability to turn his hand to residential and commercial cabinet work and commercial building projects. A stickler for prompt delivery and attention to detail, Lulu's success is partly due to his being able to take on all sorts of diverse paying jobs. His work can be found in restaurants, shops, medical centres, universities, offices, domestic and commercial kitchens, bathrooms and living spaces.

As a user of cut-to-size panels himself, Lulu soon

Edging solutions, growing with Felder

realised that the current supply of quality edge finished panels was not good enough for some of his high end clients and designer installations. The solution? Start another company to provide a better product. Edging Solutions was the result and started trading just a few months ago.

Edging Solutions supplies quality cut-to-size, drilled, routered and edged panels to the cabinet making industry at an affordable price using the new Format-4 equipment.

In addition to panels edged with hot melt glue, Edging solutions also produce high gloss, zero joint panels of

the same quality as premium high gloss two-pack painted panels. They cost 30% less to produce, are waterproof, environmentally friendly and outperform all normally edged panels by a long way.

But why Felder and Format-4, especially for someone who's cultural heritage is to get the best possible deal?

Felder is not the most expensive brand but it's not the cheapest either. No, the decision to go with the Felder brand was influenced by more intangible benefits – benefits that pay dividends over time and that add to the value of his investment.

Rivelino enjoys the zero joint

According to Lulu, it's the personalised service that sets Felder apart. “It's being able to call a technician at 8pm on a weekday or on a Saturday, something you don't get with some other suppliers,” he said. “It's also the professional four year relationship we have had with Felder and the instant, personalised service with genuine people. When you

call Felder, they find a solution and call you back and that means a lot.”

Felder is one of the oldest woodworking machine suppliers but only recently has the Austrian company turned its hand to the high-technology end of wood processing. In spite of the late entry to this competitive market, Felder is turning heads all over

the world with the Format-4 equipment.

At the last Ligna show no less than 200 machines and 33 new products were on display and even the directors of some of Germany's leading machine suppliers were taking a good look. I saw it for myself! Look out because Format-4 machines have arrived in force and

are poised to become a major player in the Australian furniture and cabinet industries.

The proof is Lulu's Edging Solutions installation of the latest Perfect 710 edge banding machine with the German Schugoma zero joint technology on board. As far as I know it's only the fifth machine in the country to be able to apply the latest laser edge tape and this is going to make a big difference to what Lulu can offer his clients.

Zero joint edge banding was the stand-out new technology at the 2012 AWISA fair. It's been a talking point ever since and, this year, the technology is available on all the major machine brands.

Lulu and Priya.

Manufacturing

Some machine suppliers have developed their own systems and there is some very good technologies to choose from.

Felder's approach, along with quite a few other machine manufacturers, is to stick with the original inventor and option the reliable Schugoma system on the machine. At this year's AWISA there were four machines with the zero joint technology on display and while Australian manufacturers have been slow to take up the new equipment, the machines and the all-important co-extruded laser edge tapes are now readily available.

The Felder Format-4 machine is capable of using normal hot melt glue, of course, but the addition of the Schugoma hot air system means it can also produce zero joint panels using the latest co-extruded edge tapes made especially for laser applications.

These tapes were originally designed so that a laser could be used to soften the inner

(active) layer of the edge tape. This is pressed onto the board. It results in an extremely strong bond that is almost impossible to remove.

Because laser is an expensive technology, Schugoma developed a way of heating the inner edge of the tape using compressed hot air. The cost is much lower and the system can be fitted to a standard edge banding machine.

Lulu's Format-4 Perfect 710 edge banding machine is completely automatic; in fact you hardly ever have to open the cover. All the setting is done on the main console and pictures guide the operator through the short set-up process.

The machine features a two cutter pre-milling unit; electrically adjusted in-feed fence; infra red heating of the panel for perfect adhesion; fully controlled cut-off, trimming, rounding and scraping units; surface polishing and buffing.

What you get is a panel

where the edge join is invisible. Any change to the cutters and saws only needs a new reference point entered into the console and all the units are automatically set to the new reference.

We've seen quite a few machinery suppliers come and go but Felder and their Format-4 industrial machine range is here for the long haul. It's Austrian quality, made in Europe. Felder make machines for every possible application and their knowledge and expertise is outstanding. Lulu, his partner Priya and their production team of James, Tony, Louie and Allan love the Felder gear and it's the only brand they work with.

Lulu did his own research on the issue of zero joint panels and came to the conclusion that the technology could soon become the industry standard for quality cabinetry. Once he'd reached that conclusion the decision to add another of Felder's Format-4 machines was quite an easy one to

make. In this case, Felder did not sell the machine to Edging Solutions. Quite the opposite, Edging Solutions made the decision by themselves.

It's fair to say that most manufacturers are aware of zero joint technology. It might not seem like a big deal but as the Australian cabinet industry gets more competitive, quality becomes more of an issue. Not many companies have looked at the new technology, preferring to leave it alone because of machine cost and edge tape availability.

Lulu has faced his share of quality hurdles in the past and doesn't intend to let the current level of panel production hold him back. His investment in a Format-4 zero-joint edge bander will provide Edging Solutions with the ability to compete at all levels. Lulu won't lose a job because he can't do the work. With only a handful of machines in the country, Lulu has set himself up as a leading contender in the cut-to-size panel industry.●

Mix the names Mastersound, Bluegrass, Starline Messiah and Fyrbyrd with Tommy Emmanuel, Pink, Diesel, Keith Urban, John Williamson, Neil Finn and Neil Diamond and you come up with Maton – Australia's finest guitar manufacturer. By Philip Ashley, Supplier Magazine Technology Editor

Maton's head of product development, Patrick Evans says that the best guitar is the one the market wants and Maton punches well above their weight when it comes to world class acoustic, jazz and electric guitars. Every Maton guitar embodies the passion and skill of 50 Maton craftsmen, each of them drawing on almost 70 years of experience and dedication to produce a truly remarkable musical instrument.

Over the years Maton has produced in excess of 1,200 models and currently manufactures around 20 popular variants and, more recently, top-end ukuleles. Maton's production requirements are both diverse and demanding, requiring

a mix of technology and craft skills to reach the highest levels of quality and performance produced at an affordable cost.

To achieve this, Maton turned to Biesse, a world leader in CNC machining technology in order to realise its highest expectations. A great guitar is both a work of art and a fine musical instrument. To achieve these two attributes you need equipment that can work both heavy and delicate sections, perform 3D shaping and work to the finest tolerances. Biesse provides Maton with advanced machining processes that adds quality but more importantly, creates more time to hand finish its unique product.

Maton and Biesse, making music together

Page 29: Supplier Nov-Dec 2014

SupplierNov/Dec 2014 | 29www.suppliermagazine.com.au

Maton is not new to CNC manufacturing. Their first machine was installed in 1995 but limitations in the machine's capabilities and software meant that Maton needed to look for new equipment that more closely matched its needs. After looking at several other brands Maton chose a Biesse C6.40 FT machine in 2008 and now has two such machines working in tandem.

The Biesse C6.40 is a high precision flat table

machine ideal for nesting but also suitable for the application of complex jigs to hold Maton's uniquely shaped guitar components. A newly designed cover provides excellent visibility of the operating units. The machine also features high acceleration of the cutting units and a high flow universal table that holds down even the most difficult of Maton's hundreds of components using custom-made jigs.

Biesse is not just a flat pack kitchen machine producer. The impressive range of machinery is capable of the finest woodworking in a range of materials. In creative hands, Biesse can be a craftsperson's tool. Patrick Evans said: "People can be CNC obsessed and try to make everything on the CNC machine when what they should be doing is getting the right machines to do the job.

“Having said that, we found that there is a whole lot more you can do on the Biesse than we first realised."

Maton uses its two Biesse C6 machines to prototype new product, make its own complex CNC jigs and almost every single part that goes into a Maton guitar.

Maton needs a variety of tools and cutters to do the complex shapes needed to produce the extensive range. With so many guitar models, it's important that the changeover from one

job to the next is as quick as possible. EdgeCam software produces a 3D program that is loaded into the Biesse C6 as basic G-code. Patrick and his crew are then able to alter the code and make minor changes to the program. This allows Maton to change from one part to the next in as little as 10 minutes.

Production speed is an absolute necessity and Patrick said he can push the Biesse C6 to high speeds even on the most complex parts such as the beautifully crafted guitar neck. These are machined on top and bottom surfaces requiring a complex machining process on two separate set-ups.

"While it's possible to make as many parts as can fit onto the table, we usually produce in batches of ten because this is what works best for the production of our 20 popular models. We need the flexibility to switch to another model quickly and Biesse 30

Page 30: Supplier Nov-Dec 2014

30 | SupplierNov/Dec 2014 www.suppliermagazine.com.au

Manufacturing

allows us to do this very effectively," he said

The Biesse is also used to prototype new product and, this year, eight new guitar models have been released. An example of the Biesse C6 flexibility is two prototype guitar necks made on the Biesse in seven minutes! Made by hand, the same two necks would have taken a whole day.

Biesse allows the user the creative freedom to produce almost any concept and to make prototypes for evaluation quickly and efficiently. "You can realise ideas a lot quicker with the Biesse CNC," said Patrick. "All our factory jigs are also made on the Biesse, no matter what other machine the jigs are used on."

When American made guitars came to Australia in large numbers they challenged Maton, who were seen as the number two, but more expensive brand. This forced Maton to lift its quality to exceed the competition. The introduction of the Biesse machines has enabled Maton

to spend more time finishing for quality and less time machining the parts.

Every Maton guitar is hand finished by a skilled team of dedicated luthiers. It's part of the Maton quality. The Biesse machine produce shapes and surfaces that's incredibly close to the final product but, as Patrick said: "You reach a point of negative returns where further machining is not going to give you any better result that you get with hand-finishing the product. We don't want to miss more effective solutions by being CNC obsessed. You have to understand the strengths of CNC and balance this with traditional equipment and methods of production".

Maton acoustic guitars have a style and sound all of their own and this comes mainly from the soundboard or front of the guitar body. The thickness and accuracy of the body combined with the delicate woodwork on the underside of the guitar face is what gives the unique tone of each guitar. Maton calls this

the "tap frequency" and each guitar needs to be perfect. Each model has a variance that can be stylistic or is a preference of the user. These variances produce brighter or darker sounds and it's not unusual for a recording studio to have at least 20 guitars on hand to get the right sound on your CD. Biesse is able to machine all these parts to extremely fine tolerances and allow Maton to use different species of timber and get the tone they and the customer are looking for.

Maton has a never-ending program of improvement and seek the finest range of tones and sounds. To achieve this, Maton experiments with Australian timbers such as blackwood, bunya, Queensland maple, Queensland walnut and now satin box to replace

endangered species. Maton founder Bill May

pioneered the use of many Australian wood species in guitar construction and is regarded by many Australian luthiers as the founding father of their industry. Maton is now able to satisfy the demanding Australian market and realise big overseas sales.

As a company, Maton has proved that you can make a quality, world-class product in Australia using mostly Australian timbers and leading edge technology. The company is committed to manufacturing in Australia and strives to be amongst the best in the world.

Maton certainly know how to design and build a unique, well made guitar and, with Biesse as a valued partner, the finest quality guitars in the world come to life. ●

The SCM K400 pre-milling range of edgebanders was released in Australia in early 2014. Since then delivery times have regularly blown out, with Gabbett Machinery (the local agent) taking forward orders – in some cases up to nine months in advance.

Lee Gabbett of Gabbett Machinery explains why this is the case.

Easy to useThe K400TER1 uses a state-of-the-art, intuitive touch screen controller. Programs are called up at the touch of a button and are easily modified if required. The StarTouch controller can be seen in action on the Gabbett Machinery website.

Perfect edgesAnti-adhesive spray is applied prior to the pre-milling station. This means that anything that lands on the laminated faces of the panel, glue for example, wont stick to the surface – you get a finished, clean panel every time.

SCM also uses a unique air blower system to clean the panel prior to entering the glue zone. This ensures a better glue bond on the panel, with a better glue line and a cleaner glue pot.

The K400 is equipped with an infrared ceramic lamp that heats the edge of the panel prior to entering the glue zone. The heating unit is used to ensure the panel edge is at a certain temperature to ensure maximum adhesion,

which improves the bonding process.

The K400 is equipped with a mist spray system suitable for polished and delicate edges with or without a protective film. The system sprays a fine mist of lubricant directly to the edge strip or protective film to ensure no damage is caused to the high gloss finish by the copying devices.

The tiltable top and bottom trimmers have both vertical and horizontal copying device with large rotating disc. Discs instead of shoes means no scratching of the tapes.

Designed for long life. The pre-millers and the corner rounding unit come with diamond tools as

standard. It costs more to fit the machine with these, but gives you massively reduced servicing costs over the lifetime of the machine.

SCM also uses a Teflon coated glue pot, which is quick release for easy maintenance. The Gabbettt service department runs a gluepot changeover service, giving you zero downtime when doing a pot clean. Even the simple buffing wheel has been redesigned with reverse direction to reduce friction – giving you a longer life on the buffers.

6 reasons why SCM K400 pre-milling machines are so popular

Page 33: Supplier Nov-Dec 2014

“Strong, solid and reliable, that’s how most people describe the SCM spindle moulder range,” said Simon Nanni of Gabbett Machinery.

“The changes in Australian manufacturing towards a panel based industry means machines like spindle moulders are not as popular as they used to be. However, for those that do need one, having an SCM machine is a big advantage.

“SCM are renowned for their spindle range.” added Simon. “They are built strong – the large cast iron tables, sturdy bases and oversized motors mean they are versatile as well. No matter what job you throw at them, they just keep on working.”

One of the more recent additions to the SCM range

at Gabbett machinery is the Nova range. Designed to be simple, the Nova is a ‘no frills’ machine – but still has all the important attributes for which SCM are famous.

The large cast iron worktable looks like it weighs a tonne. The aluminium fences and adjustments are right in front of the operator with easy to use adjustments.

All SCM machines are CE compliant, meaning they have some of the most stringent safety systems inbuilt. The Nova range has inbuilt hold down and pressure shoes as part of the guard, meaning the operator doesn’t need to get near the cutter.

“And, because of the size, the cast iron tables are also perfect for a feed unit to be mounted to,” said Simon. ●

SCM spindle moulders – the factory workhorse

FlexibleThe K400 has two independent end saws. In addition to a straight flush cut, you have two additional saws, which can apply a 1mm radius with just the touch of a button.

One touch program call up, and auto head movements mean tape changeovers are quick and easy.

Nesting capacityThe machine has nesting friendly units to allow for panels with pre-drilled hinge holes to pass through without any problems.

SCM’s system is industry tested throughout the world – it is reliable and effective.

EngineeringThe SCM engineers its machines from the ground up – aiming for a compact machine that pumps out panels quickly. Short panel gaps, high thickness capacities and increased feed speeds are standard on the K400 range

All this adds up to spending less time in front of your edgebander. After all, wouldn’t you rather be doing something else? ●

With manufacturers now spanning Australia the ordering systems’ success says much about the cabinet making industry of today.

The team at goCabinets believes that a range of factors are responsible for this astounding 800% increase in overall use. One is the refreshed branding of the product. goCabinets is also incredibly accessible – since it’s free to use it encourages the industry to explore the benefits of online ordering in a no-obligation environment.

Another key contributing factor is that the industry is collectively looking for a more efficient way to do their jobs.

“It seems that the momentum is really only just starting to build and we are at the beginning of what will be a historical shift in the industry,” said Gary Cannard, Senior Technical Director at goCabinets

and the brains behind the product.

“It’s exciting to see that cabinet makers are finally starting to embrace software and the associated advantages.”

goCabinets takes care of cut lists, quotes, job entry and processing. It makes a practice that may have taken days whittle down to just minutes. It is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week from anywhere in the world – allowing for an ultra-flexible approach to cabinet making.

“We can really only see goCabinets flourishing from here and we are eager to see what the future brings,” said Cannard.

*goCabinets is a cloud-based

online cabinetry ordering system for the trade. The software has been developed by an experienced team of cabinet makers in collaboration with some of the best software programmers in the country. goCabinets is fully Australian made and owned. ●

There were some very clear messages received from the many joinery businesses we spoke with at AWISA in August 2014 that are worth sharing.

Manufacturing is not deadThe reality of the industry is a far cry from the negative media messages of the past few years. Joinery manufacturing is alive and well and, in fact, many businesses are struggling to keep up with demand. The much touted threat from cheaper imports has had an impact but not to the extent the media would have us believe. Clients are valuing local suppliers who can deliver quality product quickly. Yes, the industry has rationalised but it is far from dead!

Need for flexibilityThe nature of many joinery businesses has shifted over the past few years. They are now competing in an environment where there is a need to be flexible and act quickly to meet the changing needs of clients.

Successful businesses act quickly, deliver within tighter timeframes and extend beyond their traditional markets to meet emerging or niche market needs. The ability to work within many different markets, where clients place value on

quality, is now paramount to remaining successful.

Process is kingSuccessful businesses recognise that process improvement is the key to remaining profitable in an ever changing environment. Their ongoing focus is on streamlining processes to become more efficient but at the same time remaining flexible and reducing time to market.

Businesses that focussed on removing manual processes and investing in the tools to work faster and smarter have gone from strength to strength.

Technology is an ongoing investmentTechnology has been the key for businesses that have been successful in improving processes. These businesses recognised that if they were to continue to work with the same tools as 10 years ago, they will produce the same results as 10 years ago – and this was simply not good enough in the current market.

Our industry is able to easily access state of the art technology from a hardware, software and machinery perspective. Successful businesses have been, and will continue to be, those who stay ahead of the technology curve and continue to invest in new technology that will support

their business now and also into the future.

These businesses view technology not as a cost to their business but an investment – one that is repaid many times over through increased productivity and profitability.

Change is necessaryChange is a hard but necessary part of business life. And it is even harder when faced with the challenge of meeting busy production schedules. But successful businesses have understood that investing in change is, in fact, investing in their future.

Outgrowing current technologyWe heard many times at AWISA that businesses feel they have outgrown their current technology, particularly their CAD/CAM software. They are recognising that rather than assisting them it is restricting them.

Those businesses who have already taken the step to change their CAD/CAM software solution recognised that it was better to make a major change now that will take their business through for the next 10 to 15 years rather than continue to invest in current technology that is simply not performing to current industry standards.

Successful change strategiesMany businesses we spoke with highlighted that they know they need to make changes, particularly with their software. Some were struggling with how to implement new technology and processes with their current tight production schedules and staffing levels.

Change, such as implementing a new CAD/CAM software solution, does need to be thought through carefully to ensure it succeeds. There is little point investing in new technology

AWISA highlights now is the time for changeBy Anne Charlton, Marketing Manager, Integrated Joinery Solutions

“A defining moment for many businesses we spoke with at AWISA 2014 was the understanding that if they continued to work the same way, with the same tools, then they would continue to produce the same results. And that this is no longer good enough.”

TopSolid’Wood; your solution for the future

TopSolid’Wood is quickly becoming the CAD/CAM solution of choice for the industry. Since bringing the solution to Australia and New Zealand a little over 12 months ago we have been working hard to meet the high demand from the joinery industry, with over 70 licenses already in use.

Advantages of TopSolid’Wood• Increased ProductivityBusinesses are seeing that TopSolid’Wood is quickly repaying their initial investment with increased productivity. Some businesses are reporting a 30 to 40% increase in set out productivity allowing them to take on more jobs with their current staffing.

• Removal of set-out bottlenecksTopSolid’Wood is

an integrated software solution which supports a more efficient process

model, where a number of processes are done at the same time.

The concurrent process supported by Topsolid’Wood allows each set-out operator to take control of an entire job from design right through to generating code to send to machine. This improves the efficiency of the set-out department, removing a key bottleneck for many joinery businesses.

As you have one set-out operator assigned to a project from beginning to end you substantially reduce the amount of double handling for the project. You no longer have to brief multiple staff on each job, you minimise miscommunication and reduce the time to fix errors or make changes.

The method supported by outdated, non-integrated software requires each process to be completed one after the other, rather than at the same time. This is due to the need to export through to multiple different softwares – an outdated and inefficient process. 38

• Minimise double handlingWith TopSolid’Wood,

production is an integral part of the solution. Machining can be safely assigned from the beginning of the design process as you are not exporting through to another software solution to apply machining.

As all dimensions have advanced parametric functionality, the production information is automatically updated should changes be made to the model.

This makes for reduced double handling as you do not need to redraw or reassign machining when clients make changes.

• New MarketsA key to success in the

current market is being able to quickly adapt to market trends and new markets. With TopSolid’Wood you have all the advantages of

advanced library functionality for standard, repetitive work and the functionality of a true 3D modelling system for those custom projects. This allows you to say YES to more projects with confidence.

Months before the next edition of interzum, the event has recorded an increase of 6% in registration levels compared to 2013 figures. Exhibitors in 2015 will include returning and new companies, as well as companies from countries

which have never taken part before. Project Manager Matthias Pollmann reports very good initial figures for interzum 2015 and sees these early positive results as confirmation of the status of the leading fair for the furniture supply and interior

construction industry. There are still five months

to go before the furniture supply fair begins in early May 2015. Koelnmesse has received 809 registrations to date; at the same time in 2013, registrations were at 765. That is an increase of

6% in early registrations. Pollmann estimates that

the present registration levels could mean a slight increase in the exhibition area of interzum 2015: around 90% of the area currently available is already reserved.

New countries are also demonstrating interest – in 2015, interzum will welcome its first ever exhibitors from Columbia. Overall, Koelnmesse is expecting an increase in the fair’s international character, in its exhibitors but also in its visitors.

“interzum is the world’s leading fair in the furniture supply and interior construction industry. In 2015, we are confident that the fair will once again live up to its high standards,” said Pollmann.

The next interzum takes place from 5 to 8 May 2015 in Cologne, Germany. ●

Wood Processing Machinery & Intermob 2014 Fairs were held in September with the participation of 861 company and company representatives from 30 countries.

During the five days, the

fairs became a trade hub for 60,046 professional visitors from 102 countries making it the biggest meeting platform of the sector in Eurasia.

The next fairs will take place from 10 to 14 October, 2015.

A market is not just made up of the large international players – it is also defined by smaller manufacturers and, while they might not wield as much weight, they often make up for this by being extremely versatile and creative. It is just this market structure that the international kitchen event LivingKitchen will be delivering in Cologne this coming January. As well as large producers, the trade fair will also present a number of smaller companies, many of which are overseas, that will bring more life to the fair and make it a considerably more attractive prospect for visitors.

The most important German and international companies from the kitchen furniture, appliances and

accessories industries will be there. However, ultimately it is not just the big companies that will set the trends and create a furore: Smaller companies and specialist manufacturers are characterised by the creation of many new developments and in particular by being brave enough to stray from the beaten track.

“There are lots of smaller and less well-known companies – many of them from abroad – that have registered for LivingKitchen that have attracted attention in the past thanks to an interesting product portfolio, or that have the potential to do so in the future. They are the kind of companies that really make the market ‘colourful’,” sais Eike Fuchs, LivingKitchen Project Manager.

There are also many interesting accessories companies floating around the market, aiming to secure international contacts at LivingKitchen. As well as Lithuanian kitchen sink manufacturer Aquasanita, there are producers like Concept Swiss from Lucerne in Switzerland, which offers a wide range of products from sinks to vents; materials specialist Polyston from Slovakia; Idealstones from Poland, with worktops and sinks made from quartz; or fittings supplier Insinkerator from England.

The trade fair takes place alongside imm cologne from 19 to25 January 2015.●

Business

Ask any life coach and they will likely tell you, life can be greatly enhanced by having clear goals and plans to achieve them. In business these are generally referred to as Key Performance Indicators or KPIs.

There are two types of KPIs – Leading KPIs and Lagging KPIs. Leading KPIs are those that drive activity and results and Lagging KPIs are those that measure the results.

In business, if your goal is to improve profit and cash flow and ability to grow your business you need to work out what are the key drivers impacting results. Let’s discuss both types of KPIs

Leading KPIs1. Product/service development: If you want to maintain an edge over your competitors you need to have a plan to constantly develop your products and services. KPIs to ensure improvement here might be: • number of new products/

services launched;• number of R&D projects

undertaken.

2. Marketing: If you want to keep pace with the market you need to keep letting them know who you are and that you are ready and willing to help. KPIs here could be; • number of visitors to your

website or premises;• number of enquiries

received from a particular marketing source;

• another useful KPI to ensure a good return

on investment of your marketing dollars could be cost per enquiry. This helps you to gauge the value of all marketing dollars spent;

• number of contacts on database or customer relationship management system (CRM).

3. Sales: Once you’ve got interest from the market you need to convert that interest into sales and ultimately dollars onto your bottom line. KPIs here could be;• number of quotes

provided;• number of quotes won; • number of quotes lost;• sales conversion rate i.e.

number of sales calls made compared to those converted;

• upselling rate i.e. how many add on products/services were sold to customers.

4. Operations: When you have made a sale and it’s time to deliver to your customer. To ensure a consistently high level of service, it’s vital to measure your operational performance. KPIs here could be:• personnel productivity i.e.

how many hours have been sold compared to those paid to service staff

• work in progress days i.e. how many days are jobs in progress prior to finishing

• rework hours – to fix mistakes on jobs

• stock turnover rate• level of backorders• number of days for

customers to receive orders

• product returns/complaints/defects

• hours downtime of staff/equipment

• overtime hours

5. Customer Service: Once you have a customer, it’s much easier to retain them than it is to get new ones. KPIs here could be;• customer retention rate• number of new customers

acquired• number of major client

visits attended• customer complaints

received• testimonials acquired• referrals received

6. Finance: Happy customers have no reason not to pay on time, so if everything else is in order, some KPIs here could be• accounts receivable days

i.e. how many days are customers taking to pay, on average

• profit by:o customer or type of

customer;o product/service or

type of product/service;

o division;• accounts payable days

i.e. how many days are you taking to pay your suppliers;

• number of price increases or discounts given.

7. Human Resources: Happy staff provide great service to happy customers

who are happy to pay, so how happy are they?• WHS incidents/hazards;• staff turnover;• staff satisfaction;• ideas for improvement

submitted/suggested;• staff training hours/events

attended;• incentive payments made.

Lagging KPIsThese are mainly results oriented indicators measured both monthly and year to date such as::• sales versus budget and

last year;• gross profit percentage

versus budget and last year;

• overheads versus budget and last year;

• overheads as a percentage of sales versus budget and last year;

• net profit percentage versus budget and last year;

• current ratio;• net equity;• sales growth percentage;• inventory days;• work in progress days.

Notice how the list of Leading KPIs is much larger than the Lagging KPIs? That’s because it takes a lot to achieve a result in most businesses. Many business people tend to focus on the Lagging KPIs and fail to measure the Leading KPIs.
