We' praise Thee, 0 God: we acknowledge Thee to be the Lord. All the earth doth worship Thee: the Father everlasting. To Thee all Angels cry aloud: the heave1is and all the powers therein. To Thee Cherubim and Seraphim: continually do cry, Holy, Holy, Holy: Lord God of Sabaoth; Heaven and earth are full of the Majesty: ofThy glory. The glorious company of the Apostles praise Thee. The goodly fellowship of the Prophets praise Thee. The noble army of Martyrs praise Thee. The holy Church throughout all the world doth acknowledge Thee. The Father of an infinite Majesty; Thine honourable, true and only Son; Also the Holy Ghosc, the Comforter. Thou art rhe King of glory, 0 Christ. Thou art the everlasting Son of the Father. When Thou tookest upon Thee to

deliver man Thou didst nor abhor the Virgin's womb. When Thou hadst overcome the sharpness of death Thou didst open the kingdom of heaven to all believers. Thou sirtest at the right hand of God in che glory of the Father. We believe that Thou shalt come to be our Judge. We therefore pray Thee, help Thy servants, whom Thou hast redeemed with Thy precious blood. Make them to be numbered with Thy Saints in Glory everlasting. 0 Lord, save Thy people and bless Thine heritage. Govern them and lift them up for ever. Day by day we magnify Thee; And we worship Thy Name ever world without end. VoudlSafe, 0 Lord, to keep us this day without sin. 0 Lord, have mercy upon us; have mercy upon us. 0 Lord, Ice Thy mercy lighten upon us as ot1r trust is in Thec.'O Lord, in Thee have I trusted; let me never be confot1ndcd.

SS: 7. Hildegard of Bingen, Ave generosa (Hymn)

1. Ave, generosa, gloriosa, et intacta puella. Tu pupilla castitatis, tu materia sanctitatis, Que Deo plaaril:.

2 Nam hec supema infusio ... in te camem induit.

3. Tu candidum lilium ... inspexit.

4. 0 pulcherrima et dulcissima ..• de te lactatus est.

5. Venter enim tuus ... ubi castitas tua in Deo danrit.

6. Viscera tua gaudium ... o mater omnis gaudii

7. Nunc omnis ecclesia ... Dei genitricem. Amen.

Hail, noble girl, shimmering, and unpolluted. You pupil in the eye of chastity, you essence of sanctity, Which was pleasing to God.

For the heavenly potion was poured into you, in that the heavenly word received a ra1ment of flesh in you.

You are the lily that dazzles, whom God knew before all others.

0 most beautiful and delectable one; how greatly God delighted in you! In the clasp of Hi'; fire He implanted in you so that His son might be suckled by you.

Thus your womb held joy, when the harmony of all heaven chimed out from you, because, Virgin, you carried OU'ist whence your chastity blazed in God.

Your flesh has known delight, like the grassland touched by dew and immersed in :its freshness: so it was with you, mother of all joy.

Now let the sunrise of joy be over all the church and let it resound in music for the sweetest Virgin, Mary, compelling all praise, Mother of God. Amen.

To sing I must of what I'd rather not, so much does he of whom I am the lover embitter me; yet I love !Um more than anything in the world. To no av.ill are my beaury or politeness, my goodness, or my virtue and good sense. For I have been cheated and betrayed, as if I had been disagreeable to him.

In this strophic song, or canso, from the second half of the twelfth cenrury, four distinct melodic components are arranged in the form AB ABC DB. All lines but one end on an unaccented syllable, a circumstance emphasized

And, since beyond any creature's your virtue excels, I cm honestly say: Rose, lily, spring, greenery, flower, balm, and very sweet fragrance, beautiful lady, you surpass in sweomess.

The rondeau is a form in which the full refrain, heard at the beginning and the end, contains all the music. In Rose, liz the first part of the refrain has two lines and closes without finality on D, while the second part has one line and closes on the keytone C. The first couplet, of two lines, is set to the music of the first part of the refrain; the second couplet, of thtee lines, uses all the music. The musical form for the 13 lines is ABaAabAB (capital letters indicate that both the music and the text of the refrain are sung):

Line: 1 ·. 2 3 4 s .. 6(1) . 7(2) 8 9 10 11(1) 12(2) . 13(3)

Rhyme:

Music:

A and B are linked by having similar final rhymes and musical phrases (compare measures 20-25 and 32-36).

As in Machaut's secular songs in general, the music is constructed around a two-voice framework in which the tenor serves as a slower-moving support to the cantus, the only voice provided with a text (although all of the voices may have been sung). The contratenor, in the same range as the tenor, reinforces or complements it, while the triplum shares the upper octave and exchanges motives with the cantus. A diatonic descending-fourth figure dominates the tenor part and at one point is taken up by the triplum (compare tenor, measures 11-12, and triplum, measures 15-16). Thirds and sixths sweeten the harmony along the way but are suppressed at the final note of poetic lines and caesuras, where Machaut preferred the octave and fifth. What may sound like syncopations are really the effect of herniola, parts simultaneously organized in duple and triple divisions (~ and ! in the transcription).

Characteristic of French fourteenth-century secular music is the long melisrna at the beginning of lines and sometimes also in the middle. These melismas, occupying as much as four measures, do not fall on important words, nor even necessarily on accented syllables. They have a formal and decorative function and help convey the mood of the text.

Machaut's Messe de Notre Dame was one of the earliest polyphonic settings of the Ordinary. At least four more or less complete anonymous cycles preceded it, but Machaut's stands out for its spacious dimensions, its control of consonance and dissonance in a four-part texture, and its carefully planned isorhythmic structureS. Although it is not unified, as some later Masses, by a single cantus firmus---<!ach movement is based on a different one-there is a unity of approach and style and a tonal focus on D and F that hold the movements together.

The Kyrie, Sanctus, Agnus Dei, and lte, missa est are organized by means of isorhythm, a manner of construction Machaut used in his motets. The Agnus Dei is typical of the isorhythmic movements. The tenor melody is taken from the setting of that text in the plainchant Mass numbered XVII in modern chant books (Liber usuali.s, p. 61), though in a slightly different version. The isorhythmic structure begins at the words "qui tollis" -that is, after the intonation of each Agnus (Agnus ill repeats Agnus I). Since the "qui tollis" section of the chant is identical in Agnus I and II, the two statements of this constitute the two colores. The first color (Agnus I) has two taleae, each of twelve notes; the. second color (Agnus II) has six taleae, each of four notes. The more frequent cadences at the end of the short taleae of Agnus II
