b) Letters dated 16-Oct-2010, 18-Oct-2010 & 22-Oct-2010 from Prof P Venugopal about the Membership Status of Dr Ketan Desai:The President-USI reported that the Board of Governors in supersession of the Medical Council of India had suspended the medical registration of Dr Ketan Desai in the light of the recent allegations against him. According to the USI Constitution, the eligibility criterion for membership of the USI is that he/she has to be a registered medical practitioner. A show cause notice was sent to Dr Ketan Desai and there was no response. Members pointed out that the Gujarat Medical Council had not taken any action, the Gujarat University had elected him to the Senate and Dr Ketan Desai has been reinstated as the Dean of the Medical Faculty. Health is a state subject and Dr Desai continues to practice modern medicine in Gujarat. This matter was discussed at the GCM held on 21-Jan-2011 where members pointed out that there was still some ambiguity in the matter as the Gujarat Medical Council had not cancelled his medical registration. After a detailed discussion, it was RESOLVED that status quo be maintained till further clarification was available.

Online CME Sessions may be started on the web site and credit points can be awarded. The President-USI suggested that the Governing Council should look into these suggestions.

d) Letter dated 01-Dec-2010 from PP Rao regarding “the last megashow of the year 2010 in Urology at Medicity Medanta, Gurgaon”: PP Rao had pointed out in his letter that meetings and workshops were continued to be held within two months of the USICON in spite of strict guidelines from the AGM last year. NP Gupta [Past President-USI] had organized this workshop and the brochure displayed that the President-Elect and Honorary Treasurer were part of the scientific program. The President-USI reassured that the Governing Council will reiterate the guidelines for holding of scientific programs, workshops and conferences by USI members.

27. Any other matters with permission of the Chair:a) It was intimated by Dr Ganesh Gopalakrishnan and Dr Keshavmurthy that the family of the

Late Prof HS Bhat were keen to donate for an oration named after him, to be read at the USICON. President USI opined that the present programme grid did not allow for any more named orations and requested the proposers to consider an existing awardto be named after the illustrious teacher. Dr G Gopalakrishnan agreed to look into the matter of instituting a 2-week International member Travel Fellowship named after Prof Bhat.

b) Dr PP Rao and Dr Date asked why the USI was concentrating solely on Residents' training programmes when postgraduate teaching was primarily the responsibility of teaching institutions. They pointed out that CUEs were poorly attended by residents and were eating into time for scientific activities of members. The President USI informed the house that he had already tasked the Board of Education with starting teaching activities for middle level and even senior level members in the future.

Friends,

Greetings from the city of the Taj!

It is my pleasant duty to inform you that our society is in robust health, with its

membership and financial assets growing at a healthy rate. The total membership

of USI has grown from 1800 to more than 2400 members, an increase of 33% in

the last two years. The total assets of USI now stand at Rs 3.48 Lakhs a significant rise from Rs 2.75

Lakhs in April 2009.

The long-standing dream of establishing a permanent office for USI has been fulfilled, thanks largely

to the contribution from Prof N P Gupta from the savings from the ACU. The central office is fully

functional now and all the activities of USI will be carried out from the new office. You can visit the

website of USI www.usi.org.in for details about the central office.

At the USICON 2012, you'll receive the new members' directory complete with photographs (please

mail yours if it is missing) in addition to the usual updated details, painstakingly collected by the

Directory Editor Dr Amit Ghose. You can also log onto the USI website not only to browse the details,

but also to update your information, using your membership number as the log-in id, and the password

mailed to you earlier (you can requisition it through the website if needed).

You are requested to invite all your expatriate urologist friends to avail the specially subsidized one-

time life membership fee join the USI as International members. We are actively pursuing this

objective by approaching all Urologists of Indian origin settled abroad.

I thank the President Prof P B Singh, Hon Secretary Prof S K Singh, and all the Council members for

their help and support in the past year. I would also like to thank Mr Navneet Arora for taking care of

the central office of USI, and Mr Rahul Sabbarwal for looking after the treasurer's office, with extreme

dedication and efficiency.

Looking forward to see you at USICON 2012, Bengaluru,
