I quickly developed a sense of empathy for Christians there who's faith put their very lives at risk. Recently I read an article that not only reminded me of my time in Africa, but also the challenge that we have to “stand firm” in our faith. John Garang is a man who has made a huge difference in the chaotic country of Sudan. Recently he died due to a helicopter crash, but prior to that time he worked tirelessly to bring freedom and hope to a people in great need. Since our presbytery and our church has a unique relationship with the Sudan I thought it might be useful to share his example of “standing firm” with you. Mr. Garang was by no means a man without controversy in his life. After two post graduate degrees earned in the United States he was drafted into the Sudanese army while lecturing in economics at the University of Khartoum. Because he was forced to combat fellow Africans and Christians in Southern Sudan he defected from the army. He shortly began to lead a rebel movement against the government because there was no other option left to stand up to the injustice that was taking place. A recent article in World magazine recounts some words he shared with a large group of the “Lost Boys” of Sudan. They are orphaned boys and some of the most forgotten and negatively affected individuals of the Sundanese conflict; hence the name “Lost Boys.” Here is what Mr. Garang said to them: “I would not be able to make the tough decisions of liberation if I never went to school. Lack of education is darker than the night, he added. Since you managed to escape Sudan, and the UN is helping you to go to school, take the paper and pen and I will take gun to fight. Christianity is more powerful and is more important than what I said. Pray before doing anything and God will be with you. Christianity is our foundation and he encouraged ‘Lost Boys’ to take a Christian name as their first name.” You and I cannot directly relate to the kind of challenges that Mr. Garang endured in his life, not the “Lost Boys” either for that matter. However, we do know that answering the call of discipleship is not without risk or cost. Making the gospel come alive in your life and mine involves “standing firm” for biblical principals. It involves opposing social injustice, prejudice, and the lure of materialism that exists all around us. “Standing firm” means reflecting more of the love of Jesus each and every day especially when it isn’t easy. Supplee Presbyterian Church is a congregation that has richly been blessed by the Lord. Let us endeavor to “stand firm” in the one we serve and the one we worship - Jesus Christ our Lord. “Standing Firm”

A number of years ago I had the privilege of spending some time in the Sudan. I quickly developed a sense of empathy for Christians there who's faith put their very lives at risk. Recently I read an article that not only reminded me of my time in Africa, but also the challenge that we have to “stand firm” in our faith. Half Truths: God Helps Those Who Help Themselves and Other Things the Bible Doesn’t Say

Led by Clay Frederick, Jan Wormington and Chuck Wormington, Parlor

Christians often say things that are well-worn clichés but are only partially true. Adam Hamilton, the senior pastor of The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in Kansas City, speaks across the U.S. on leadership and connecting with nonreligious and nominally religious people. He is considered a master at explaining questions of faith in a down-to-earth fashion. He will be presenting material that is bound to make you think more deeply about your faith and how it applies to your life. If you have not asked some of the questions he addresses, your nominally religious friends probably have. Join us to help understand your faith better and how you can articulate it to those who may question or be confused by some common simple phrases

Hymns, Songs, and the Bible

Led by Janice Brunner and Jay Eibner, Fellowship Hall

Do you enjoy the music during our worship services? Do you have a favorite praise song or hymn? Maybe you even find yourself humming one of them in the car on the way home. But sometimes, even when a song is stuck in our heads, we don’t really think about what the words mean. Christian music can often convey a powerful message, so it would be a shame for us to fail to understand what that message is. In this series we’re going to take a look at some of our favorite songs and hymns, dig into what they mean, and try to understand how the words relate to Biblical teachings. Our hope is that by the time we’re done we’ll all have a better understanding of the hymns and songs we’ve studied. That way, every time we hear them in the future, they’ll have even more impact on us than they do already.

We’re taking suggestions for hymns and songs to cover in the class, so if you have a favorite let Jay know and we’ll use as many of the suggestions as we can.

Different Religions

Led by Pastor Don Hoagland, Crossroads Center

Dr. Hoagland’s adult education class that meets in the Crossroads Center will resume on September 10th at 10:45 a.m. We will be looking at some of the differences between religions. All are welcome.

As the Women’s Association closes out its year, we are mindful of the chance to start again in September and many of us decide to begin new things and plan for the year. This year why don’t you decide to do something new and join a circle. It’s quick, it’s easy and it’s fun. You get additional friends and belong to a devoted group of women seeking to study together and plan to do God’s work. The only magical part about it is that now you can join in with such a group. Below is a listing of the circles, when they meet and the names and phone numbers of the leaders. Join one and find out the joy it will bring.

Notes From Supplee Youth Group by Evan Lehman

With summer ending and regular youth group starting back up, this marks the end of our blaze events at youth group. Blaze events are a casual evening around the fire pit that always end with a guest speaker. The guest speaker aspect is really one of my favorite parts of the

summer. The youth hear me talk to them all the time. Having guest speakers gives them a different perspective and a different voice in their ears. Also, the speakers bring different strengths and areas of knowledge to teach new ideas and concepts to the kids. There was one night in particular this past summer that really was a good message. We had a guest speaker who is involved in Christian racial reconciliation. His message challenged the kids with the idea that Christians should really be intentional when it comes to issues of race and hate. Avoiding and ignoring such a topic really is not being a light into the world or a city on a hill. His message walked through Jesus’ radical example when dealing with individuals who were different than him. It is never too early to start thinking about next summer. We are always looking for people of Supplee who can share with the youth. As a reader, if you have any thoughts you would want to share with the youth please do not hesitate to approach Evan Lehman about speaking next year.

News from the Nursery School by Karen Kohler

So, after all of our planning, prep, ordering, reservations, mailings and changes, WE ARE READY! We are ready to open our doors for the 2017-18 school year, one which we hope will be full of fun and excitement, growth and learning, for all of our little ones. During the summer, as part of our licensing inspection, a representative from the PA

Department of Human Services toured classroom to classroom, entered the kitchen and bathrooms, viewed the Crossroads Center and Fellowship Hall. Although government inspectors in general are not always what one might call affirming, this inspector said she was “very impressed.” She went on to praise our wealth of toys and supplies available, the size of our classrooms, how clean and well maintained the building is, how organized the files are, etc. Although we’ve always known that ours is a special school, it was quite nice to hear her comments. Supplee Nursery School is now 45 years old, just beginning our 46th year! I’m sure a math whiz among us could calculate the number of children who have passed through our hallways, but we could probably never realize the impact the school has had on our local communities. We feel sure that the love, kindness and love of learning has grown as the children left us and blossomed as they made their way through school and beyond. Please pray with us that the year will be a good one where each child flourishes within the warmth of

our care.

Can you help us with our cost-free fund raiser?..... If you have a Giant Bonus card, did you know you could earn dollars for the Nursery School without spending a dime? Starting on September 15, you can go to Giantfoodstores.com, click on Bonus Card, then on A+ Rewards. If you designate us as the school of your choice, we will receive a check in the spring based on your

purchases from October through March. Or just call the Nursery School; we can register you if you would prefer. Every dollar helps us hold down tuition, and is used for classroom and playground toys and equipment. Each year, we receive well over a thousand dollars! Spread the word, and thank you!
