As summer winds down, we now turn our attention to the fall season ahead.With Covid-19 still affecting our daily lives, the Town of Orangetown Parksand Recreation Department continues to work hard to keep our parks andother outdoor amenities safe for everyone to enjoy. There is truly no betterplace to get out and enjoy the foliage than from one of the many trails withinOrangetown’s extensive network of State, County, and Town parks here in theLower Hudson Valley. We continue to thank the Parks Department for theircontinued focus on and commitment to offering excellent programs and tomaintaining the natural beauty of our parks and recreational resources toenrich the quality of our life here in Orangetown.

From a variety of well-organized sporting programs to recreational classes,Orangetown provides a wide selection of fun family-oriented activities forchildren, adults, and senior citizens of all abilities. Our staff's mission is todeliver quality, affordable programming within a safe environment to meetthe needs of an ever-growing and changing community. I encourage allresidents to look through the Fall Brochure to find an activity that meets theirinterests.

Registration Policyon line /mail-in

Registration for all fall programming contained in this brochure will beginat 6:00pm on Wednesday, September 16th.

Please take the time to read the information carefully so your registration is correctlyprocessed. All mail in registration forms require payment in full in order to beprocessed. Online registration will end 4 days prior to the start of a program unlessa program has filled up to allow for program administration decisions.

Since the Spring of 2019 the Office of Recreation and Parks has partnered withCommunity Pass as our recreation software package in order to better serve ourresidents. If you have registered with us over the last 15 months you are already togo. Just sign in to your account once registration opens and you can get started. Firsttime registrants may visit our website and click on the on-line registration button inorder to create a new household. An account can be set up at any time prior to thestart of registration. This new software contains all residential addresses inOrangetown, therefore, proof of residency will no longer be required. If your residen-tial address is in Orangetown you will be viewed as a resident and if your residence isoutside of Orangetown you will be viewed as a non-resident. The non-resident reg-istration policy will still be in effect for non-resident households and they may onlyregister 7 business days prior to the start of the program. The registration website isnow located at www.orangetown.com/groups/department/parks Registration for allfall programming contained in this brochure will begin at 6:00pm on Wednesday,September 16th. You may choose to mail-in your registration based on the informa-tion listed below, but please be advised that some programs may be closed if you waitto use the mail-in procedure.

Mail-in RegistrationMail in registration must be postmarked September 16, 2020 or later. Mail receivedin this office postmarked prior to September 16 will be returned by mail to the reg-istrant. Mail in registration will continue until the start of the program unless aprogram fills.

All registrants are advised that many programs have limited availability and registra-tion is accepted on a first come first served basis. To better serve you, it is recommend-ed that you use and familiarize yourself with the on-line system. The on-line systemnow accepts all major credit cards and you will receive an emailed receipt upon suc-cessful completion of your registration. Mail-in registration forms are available in theback of the brochure. Mail-in registrations will be processed as soon as possible. Ifyour registration is approved, you will receive an emailed receipt. Registrants thathave conflicts will receive an email advising you of your registration status as well asrequesting any additional information. Registration for closed classes will be kept onfile, registrants will be notified, and payment returned.

Refund Policy: Refunds will be considered only for medical purposes upon presentationof a physician’s certificate, except in cases where a program is canceled by the Office ofRecreation and Parks. Credits will be issued only prior to the start of a program. Creditsor refunds will not be considered after the start of a program. Cancellations less thanfive business days prior to the start of a program will be assessed a $5.00 administra-tion fee.

NON-RESIDENT POLICY1. Non-resident registration will be accepted no earlier than 7 business days prior to

the start of a program, provided there is availability.2. Non-residents will be admitted on a restricted basis and only after Orangetown

residents have had sufficient time to register.3. Not all programs allow for Non-Resident participation.4. Non-Residents are required to pay an additional 25% of the program fee.

Programs, dates and times are subject to change. All checks are made payable to theTown of Orangetown and must show an Orangetown Residence. Checks listing aNon-Orangetown address will not be accepted.

Refunds and or make-ups are not guaranteed for classes canceled due to inclementweather or school activities.

Corona Virus GuidelinesAll youth and adult programming will include the following procedures to protect allinvolved in our programs. Every staff member and registrant will need to pass through a medical screening tentprior to the start of each program. The screening will include a temperature check andthe checking for any signs of flu like symptoms. Staff and registrants will also berequired to immediately inform the Orangetown Parks & Recreation Office if they testpositive or come in contact with anyone testing positive of Corona Virus as well, if theydevelop any flu like symptoms.

Early Fall ProgramsIn an effort to start some of our outdoor fall programs earlier, they will now be listed inthis brochure. Registration for these programs will be available on-line beginning Tuesday,September 1, 2020 at 6:00pm. Mail-in must be postmarked September 1st or later. ADULT TENNIS DRILL & PLAYGet a chance to play matches against other players at your ability level and learn matchstrategy from a USPTA professional in a supervised setting. Tuesday: Beginner to AdvancedBeginner - The goal of the class is to introduce the game with an emphasis on fundamen-tals, technique, and FUN! Wednesday: Intermediate and Advanced players. TENNIS 55Attention Seniors 55 and over. This class will offer a special 5 week clinic designed forseniors in a fun, relaxed, and non-competitive atmosphere. All aspects of the game will becovered including grip, stance, proper and safe technique for forehands, backhands,volleys, serves as well as point and game structure. Rackets will be supplied to use duringthe classes free of charge. The lessons will be held on the Veteran’s Memorial Park TennisCourts.

Orange “Bike” RoadFamily Bike Day

Veterans’ Memorial Highway and Orangeburg Road will turn into Orange”Bike” Road for3 hours of family biking. The start and finish point will be Blue Hill Plaza and there will be2 courses. One course is 6.5 miles long and will take you from the Blue Hill Plaza to LesterDrive in Orangeburg, through the Besty Ross area of Orangeburg and Pearl River whilethe second course will take you down to Blaisdell Road around Veteran’s Memorial Parkand back. One lane of the road will be for bicycles only along with the shoulder while theinside lane will be coned off for cars. Pre-registration is suggested prior to October 16th,on-site registration will take place if space allows. All bicyclists will be required to wear ahelmet. Registrants must be able to safely ride a bike on a roadway and training wheelsare not suggested.

FAMILY OUTDOOR SKATING NIGHTJoin the recreation staff for a night of outdoor skating on East Pond at Veteran’s MemorialPark. Portable lights will be brought in to light the pond. We will set up an area for a“cozy”campfire. Hot chocolate will be served along with other refreshments. This eventis open to Orangetown Residents only. Residents should check our website and Facebookpage for the most up to date information regarding these programs, as we will try to runthis program on any weekend if mother nature gives a cold snap to create the correct icedepth.

Skyhawks provides a wide variety of fun, safe and positive programs that emphasizecritical lessons in sports and life, such as teamwork, respect and sportsmanship. Ourprograms are designed to give each child a positive introduction into sports while fosteringa lifelong love for an active, healthy lifestyle. For this program, our patient and knowl-edgeable staff use a variety of skill-building games and activities to give each athlete acomplete understanding and overview of many different popular sports and games.Sports and games include capture the flag, soccer, ultimate frisbee, , kickball, baseball, 4square, and many more.

Kids on Wheels A LEARN TO IN-LINE SKATE PROGRAM

In-Line Skating instruction, skills development and Roller Sports. In this popular class, thechildren are grouped according to ability. Let’s Get StartedGETTING READY FOR YOUTH SPORTS PROGRAMS

Children ages 4 & 5 and their parent(s) will work collaboratively in a supervised setting todevelop the skills considered basic to formal participation in sports: catching, throwing,kicking and batting. This program will provide an opportunity for the parent(s) to partici-pate with their child in activities carefully designed to enhance development of perceptu-al-motor sk ills which are important stepping stones to involvement in many types oforganized athletic programs. Training activities will be presented in a developmentallysequential manner such that participants will be required to master each of the four skillsat easier performance levels before attempting more difficult ones. This approach isdesigned to maximize opportunities to achieve success and contribute to development ofconfidence and enjoyment of athletic involvement. Want to see how comics are made? This introduction to comic book creation will give ahands-on experience at how it's done. Each day you will learn about the different stagesof creating a comic, and see exactly how the big Super Hero comics are made. Each new comic creator will develop their own story and learn how to take itfrom an idea to reality. HIKING WITH HUDSONBBBBBBBBLongtime staff member and physical fitness enthusiast, Bob Hudson,will lead residents on a hike through local hiking paths on Clausland

Mountain and at Tallman State Park as well as other local hiking venues. Join Bob as hetakes you through the scenic heights of Orangetown and enjoy nature’s beauty.Registrants should wear appropriate clothing and footwear and bring along water andeasy to eat snacks. All Hikes are approximately 2 hours in length. Participants mustprovide their own transportation to each site. As of the writing of this brochure, CoachBob Hudson was still plotting out our schedule and so we don’t have the dates yet forthe rest of the year. Those that register will receive an email with the new dates as soonas they are available. No Fee - Registration form required or on-line registration required

AM STRETCHCome de-stress with this gentle one hour class set to soothing music. This class will targetall muscle groups through a combination of yoga and athletic stretches. This classpromises to improve both your flexibility and strength. This class will be under thedirection of Laura Hudson, a certified group fitness instructor. ORANGETOWN WALKING CLUBAs we age, muscles become shorter and lose their elasticity. Stretching and walking is anexcellent way to relax and relieve tension. It becomes very important for adults andseniors to maintain range of motion and the ability to move all joints normally duringyour daily activities. This program will also allow for use of the ½ mile track around thecomplex that will include light aerobic and exercises. This class will be lead by fitnessenthusiast Bob Hudson. Participants should bring their own exercise mat. This class will meet from time to time at other exercise sites such as the Joe Clarke RailTrail to introduce students to other venues in town. A schedule will be handed out atthe first class. When weather conditions are bad, this program will move indoors tolocal facilities.

ORANGETOWN SANTA CLAUS 5K ROAD RACEThe 29th Annual Santa Claus 5K run and kids races will be held on Sunday, December13,2020 at 10:30am. The race will begin and end in Veteran’s Memorial Park inOrangeburg. For additional information or to receive a registration form please call 359-6503 or log onto www.orangetown.com after October 1st. The layout of this race iscurrently under discussion pertaining to the Covid crisis. More race details will be availableafter October 1st as we gauge the current pandemic conditions and make the necessaryarrangements to keep both runners and staff safe.

DISCOUNT SKI PARK TICKETS The Orangetown Parks and Recreation Department will offer discounted tickets for skiresorts in the area much like our Spring/Summer Theme Park Ticket program. A flyer with prices and resorts will be available by November 15th on ourwebsite www.orangetown.com.

PICKLEBALL NET RENTALSince the game of Pickleball has gained in popularity over the last few years, theOrangetown Office or Recreation and Parks will offer Pickleball net rental to Orangetownresidents only. Pickleball nets will be available to sign out at the Office of Recreation &Parks Monday to Friday 9:30am to 4:30pm. The nets will be available for 90 minute rentalsand the resident using the net must leave their driver’s license with the Office while theequipment is in use. The equipment will not be available outside of the hours listed above.The program will end on November 15th.

GOLF IN ORANGETOWNBoth Blue Hill and Broadacres Golf Courses are open for business . Services related to GolfOperations are now handled through the respective Pro Shops at Blue Hill Golf Course andBroadacres Golf Course. Town Parks & Open Space AreasThe following is a list of Town Parks and Open Space areas, as well as other facilities thatthe Town leases for park purposes, and a brief synopsis of what is available at each site.

**Each of the Town’s villages (Grandview, Nyack, Piermont and South Nyack) have theirown park and recreation facilities. Contact their village halls for additional information.

Azalea Court—Undeveloped walk along theNauraushaun Brook.Borst Gardens—Gardens and apple orchard onproperty donated to the Town by Dr. Henry Borst.Suitable for picnicking and passive park activities.Braunsdorf—Memorial park area in Pearl River,with monuments and sitting areas.Cherry Brook—Adjacent to Franklin Avenue School,the site includes handball and tennis courts, as wellas a multi-use asphalt court, children’s play areaand walking path.Clarke Trail—A walking trail developed fromabandoned rail line in the Town. It begins inTappan, and runs through Sparkill, with a spur pro-ceeding into Piermont and the main trail proceedingnorthwest through Orangeburg and into Blauvelt. DeMeola—Leased from the South OrangetownSchool District, this site includes baseball andsoccer fields.Elliott—Passive parkland bordering TackamackPark.Greenbush Center—Playground and playfieldlocated at the former Greenbush school.Independence—Lighted tennis and basketballcourts are the major feature of this site, which alsoincludes a playground and paths.Kennedy-Reedy Fields—Two ballfields on landleased from the South Orangetown School District.Named for two Town Police officers who died in theline of duty.Nike Site—Hiking, open space and scenic viewsare the main features of this site, which formerlyserved as a Nike Hercules radar tracking station forthe U.S. government. Includes 50 additional acresowned with Rockland County and Scenic Hudson.Pascack North and South—Open space area alongthe Pascack Brook, preserved for fishing, walkingand passive enjoyment.Pilgrim Court—A children’s play area and openplay space are featured in this neighborhood parksite.Return Home Park—Dedicated in May 2005, thisarea is at the intersection of Bataan Road andWestern Highway and features a monument andplantings dedicated to those who passed throughCamp ShanksSchaefer—An undeveloped 25 acre parcel,providing open space in a highly residential area.Schuyler—Natural area adjacent to Blauvelt StatePark.Shanks Memorial—A memorial and sitting areacommemorating Camp Shanks, featuring theWalkway of Heroes.

Sparkill Memorial Park—A veteran’s monumentand the DiFrancesca Playground are at this site,which adjoins the Town’s Rail-Trail.Stoughton Park—A small playground area locatedin the Tappan Military Housing restoration project.Tackamack North and South—Open space whichadjoins county and state parklands, and including aportion of the Long Path.Tappan—Land leased from the South OrangetownSchool District, with a ballfield and playgroundarea.Tappan Memorial—A passive park with paths,benches and a pond area.Veteran’s Memorial—The Town’s most active parksite with athletic fields and courts, playgrounds, aconcession stand, jogging paths and two ponds.Whitton Field—A ballfield leased to the Town,located at Tappan Zee Elementary School.

County Park AreasClausland Mountain Park—Hiking and Open spacearea, containing a portion of the Long PathButtermilk Falls—Open space area for hiking andpassive enjoyment.

State Park AreasTallman Mountain—Ballfields, swimming pool,hiking and scenic Hudson River vistas are availableat this site.Blauvelt—Open space area for hiking, including aportion of the Long Path.Call 786-2701 for additional information.

Other Park AreasBlue Hill Golf Course—27 hole golf facility on theshore of Lake TappanBroadacres Golf Course—9 hole golf facility on theformer RPC PropertyCentral Ave. Field—Owned by the Pearl RiverSchool District, this area contains a playground,ballfield, gazebo and other site amenities main-tained or operated by Pearl River Park and ActivitesInc.. Site of many community celebrations. Lake Tappan—Suez NY operates a watershedRecreation Program, making the lake and surround-ing land available for fishing, hiking, etc. on apermit basis.Long Path—Stretching from New Jersey to GreeneCounty, the Long Path stretches through a numberof the sites listed here.

COTTAGE LANE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL120 Cottage Lane, BlauveltTake Orangeburg Road east to 4th traffic light. At4th traffic light make left turn onto WesternHighway. Take Western Highway to 3rd traffic light.At 3rd traffic light make right hand turn on ErieStreet. Take Erie Street to first left turn. Make leftturn onto Cottage Lane. School is located at end ofCottage Lane.

DANCE CENTRAL25 South William Street, Pearl RiverTake Orangeburg Road west past the reservoir tothe 6th traffic light. Make a right turn onto SouthMiddletown Road. At the end of South MiddletownRoad make a left turn onto East Central Avenue.Make a left onto William Street at the first trafficlight and Dance Central is located on the west sideof William Street.

DOMINICAN COLLEGE HENNESSY CENTER470 Western Hwy., OrangeburgTake Orangeburg Road east to 4th traffic light. At4th traffic light make left turn onto WesternHighway. Continue on Western Highway through1st traffic light. Hennessy Center is located on righthand side just after 1st traffic light.

EVANS PARK SCHOOL40 Marion Place, Pearl RiverTake Orangeburg Road west past the reservoirthrough 5 traffic lights. After 5th traffic light roadturns into Gilbert Avenue. At first traffic light makeright hand turn onto Old Middletown Road. TakeOld Middletown Road to stop sign. Continuestraight through stop sign to second right handturn. Turn right onto S. Middletown Road.Continue straight through first traffic light. Afterfirst traffic light road becomes N. Middletown Road.

Take N. Middletown Road through one traffic light,after traffic light make first right hand turn ontoPearce Parkway. Take Pearce Parkway to first rightturn Marion Place. Evans Park School is located atthe end of Marion Place.

FRANKLIN AVE. SCHOOL48 Franklin Ave., Pearl RiverTake Orangeburg Road west past the reservoirthrough 5 traffic lights. After 5th traffic light roadturns into Gilbert Avenue (stay straight). Continueon Gilbert Avenue through 2 traffic lights to secondright hand turn. Turn right onto S. William Street.Take S. William Street to end. Make right hand turnonto Franklin Avenue.
