The second-ranked Superior football team made it fourth-consecutive appearance in the 1A semifinals last Saturday at Maricopa High School, and after trailing No. 3 Mogollon 14 – 0 at the end of the first quarter, a second-straight berth in the 1A championship game was in doubt. It didn’t last long. Behind senior quarterback Steven Ybarra’s six touchdowns – three rushing and three passing – the Panthers outscored the Mustangs 50 – 6 over the final three quarters to earn the chance to win their first football state championship since 1954. “It’s not how we start but how we finish,” Ybarra said after the 50 – 20 win. “That’s probably the best second half I’ve ever played in my football life.” Ybarra’s 17-yard touchdown run midway through the second quarter got the Panthers on the scoreboard. He later tied the game just before halftime with a one-yard touchdown pass to senior Cedric Mendoza. That play proved to be a 14-point swing following Adam

Navarrette’s interception in the endzone that prevented the Mustangs from increasing their lead. The Panthers took the lead for good in the opening minutes of the third quarter, when Ybarra found Navarrette for a 93-yard touchdown. It was all Superior from there. After allowing a couple of big plays, the Panthers’ defensive performance was as it’s been all season – dominant. “I think (Mogollon) came out and surprised us,” Superior head coach Ryan Palmer said. “We got our second wind; down 14 – 0, we (outscored them) 50 – 6 over the last three quarters. I couldn’t be prouder of our kids for their grit and toughness.” Mendoza finished with a team-high six tackles in addition to six receptions for 101 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Daniel McConnell (2) and Gabriel Castillo combined for three sacks, Sammy Lopez, who had three tackles, also recovered a fumble. Gabriel Otero rushed for 120 yards and a touchdown. Navarrette led the Panthers with seven catches for 126

yard and a touchdown. Ybarra totaled 432 yards on offense, including 239 passing, 165 rushing and 28 receiving. The Panthers will play Hayden for the second time this season for the opportunity to bring the state title back to Superior for the first time in nearly 65 years. The Panthers defeated the Lobos in September, 46 – 6. “It’s going to be a tough, physical game,”

Palmer said. “We’ve come too far, we’ve worked too hard, so we’re going to focus on ourselves. We’re going to play at a championship level leave no doubt who the best team in 1A is. “We’ve been too close too many times and this group is going to do it.” Saturday’s kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Maricopa High School.

The United States Forest Service conducted the International Mining Symposium in October. Twenty five delegates from 18 different countries participated in the symposium. The week long seminar included a comprehensive look into the American mining regulations, permitting, community engagement. The symposium provided an in depth look at the Resolution Copper project along with other mining projects in Southern Arizona for the international students. In addition to meeting with officials from Resolution Copper and the Tonto National Forest, they also met with members of the Apache Stronghold who oppose the Resolution Copper project, and they met with members of the Community Working Group who shared how the CWG provide input to Resolution

Copper management. The Town of Superior hosted the international delegates during their tour. Mayor Mila Besich, Councilman Bruce Armitage, Sue Anderson, Superior Chamber of Commerce/Rebuild Superior Inc. President and Todd Pryor, Town Manager hosted a round table panel discussion for the students, the topics ranging from how does the Town manage the mining projects and what is the Town working on to plan for the construction and development of the Resolution Copper mine. “This is our third year hosting the delegates, it is fascinating to hear some of their stories and learn from their experiences. Each year we have more to share with the delegates. They are often impressed at how much volunteerism there is in Superior,” said Mayor Besich.
