Grant Edwin Denton passed away on Aug. 1, 2018. He was born in Ashurst, Arizona on Aug. 17, 1932, to “Whistling” John Calvin Denton and Minnie Pearl Hawkins Denton. Grant was the 11th and youngest child. His family had traveled from Texas by covered wagon before he was born, they settled in Arizona and here they stayed. At a young age Grant learned to rope and ride. By the 7th grade he left home to work on ranches. He started at Kennecott at the age of 18. At the age of 19 Grant was drafted into the US Army. He was stationed at Camp Hamford in Washington State. After he completed his military service he moved back to Arizona and continued to work for Kennecott Copper Corp. in Ray and later Asarco. Grant worked there for 42 years. While working for Kennecott he met and married Elizabeth Brown. Together they had three daughters, Carrie Denton Power, Carlene Denton-Roach, and Katherine Denton Willis. Grant later married Frankie Gillette and became a father to another daughter, Jodi Denton Tomerlin. Grant had eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren who all love their “Cowboy Grandpa”. Grant has many family members and many friends who will miss him dearly.

Micaela R. “Micky” Morales was born March 8, 1920 in Sonora, AZ to parents Manuel & Francisca Reyes. Our heavenly father called her home on Aug. 1, 2018 in Superior, AZ. She passed away peacefully surrounded by her family. Micaela is preceded in death by her husbands, Gonzalo Esquivel Sr. and Eduardo Morales, as well as 2 children, Gonzalito and Albert.

Grant Edwin Denton Grant loved all of his daughters greatly. Carrie helped him with his medical needs and had him up and dancing after some knee treatments. The last nine months of his life Grant spent in Kearny living with his daughter Carlene. Together they went on many adventures like visiting where he was born and baptized, and snake hunting. Katherine took him fishing often, he loved to fish and loved it even more with her. Jodi visited him often and helped him with all of his paperwork, they enjoyed reminiscing of old times and future plans. He thoroughly enjoyed his time with them Grant’s true love was the Rodeo and Working Ranches. He roped and rode until one year before his death. Grant was a true Cowboy and was honored at “Night Of The Cowboy” in 2016. Grant has won many saddles, belt buckles, and truly enjoyed teaching other cowboys to rope and ride. Many of these men still remember all of his knowledge and appreciate his wisdom that he passed on

to them. His favorite event was team roping and traveled many places to compete. He also worked on many ranches and felt of that as real Cowboying. Please join his family and friends to celebrate his life Aug. 11. Viewing will be at 9 a.m. and Services at 10 a.m. at the Kearny, Arizona, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 200 Hammond Dr. The service will be followed by grave side services. Superior Police Report

The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office is looking for professional volunteers to provide services to veterans in our HUMV unit. In November the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office Adult Detention Center launched Housing Unit for Military Veterans or HUMV. Any individual who is booked into our jail will get their veterans status verified through Veterans Affairs. If they are a veteran, they can opt to join our veterans unit. This unit will consist of veterans from different branches of the military. These inmates will have access to mentors, councilors and educational opportunities that will help them once they are released. The mentorship program continues once veterans are released to ensure they get the services they need. “The idea is to return these inmates back to the best versions of themselves. We want to teach them coping mechanisms and life skills that will give them the foundation they need once they leave our facility,” said Chief Matthew Hedrick, Pinal County Sheriff’s Office. This program is modeled after the HUMV program created by Middlesex County Sheriff Peter J. Koutoujian. The Middlesex

County Sheriff’s Office launched its program in January 2016, and it is open to both pretrial and sentenced inmates who have served at home or abroad. The program is situated in a unit reminiscent of a military barracks and features programming specific to the needs of military veterans. The results have been extremely positive, dramatically reducing the recidivism rates of veterans. Since its inception, 165 individuals have gone through the unit. Among the 111 men who spent a minimum of 30 days in HUMV, the reconviction rate is in the single digits. “Why reinvent the wheel? The program has seen great success in Middlesex County, so I wanted to bring it here. At some point, we will be able to expand the program opportunities to other inmates to help reduce recidivism across the board,” said Sheriff Mark Lamb, Pinal County. Many of our HUMV inmates have endured experiences that are still negatively affecting them today. These experiences are manifesting themselves as issues such as a lack of healthcare, limited job opportunities, homelessness, emotional disorders and other invisible wounds stemming from military service.

The next meeting of the Town of Superior Community Working Group (CWG) will be held Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2018 at 6 p.m. in the Superior Chamber of Commerce meeting room. The group will review community ideas that have been collected for preserving the area’s historic mining and cultural resources after demolition of old Magma west plant structures and smelter stack, and will develop priorities for cultural heritage projects for funding consideration. Superior area residents are encouraged to offer suggestions for this project at: http://superiorazcwg.org/comment-form/ The CWG includes residents and stakeholders from the Town of Superior, Queen Valley, Hewitt Station, Globe, the San Carlos Community and around the area. The group deals with the social and environmental issues, science and policy, and the pros and cons

of the proposed Resolution Copper Project. Topics include environmental impacts, health, safety, natural resource issues, engineering, water quantity and quality, geology, economics, air quality, community investments, recreational changes and other related subjects. Meetings are held at the Superior Chamber of Commerce at 165 W. Main in Superior from 6-8 p.m., most often on the second Wednesday of each month. Parents, teachers, students and staff arrived prepared and energetic for the 2018-19 school year on Aug. 1. The week ended with the Meet the Team night for the Superior Panther football team and a Back to School bash hosted by the Town of Superior Youth Council at the pool. Arizona Youth Partnership along with Pinal County Probation and the Superior Optimist Club donated school supplies that were given out during the event. Red Bear Outfitters helped to prepare hamburgers and hot dogs for those attending the Meet the Team Night. School administration and teachers worked throughout the summer to develop and implement a stronger strategy to strengthen the school and work towards long term school improvement. One of those changes includes the weekly late start days on Wednesdays. This schedule change means that teachers and staff will have collaboration time to work together and analyze important data to help students succeed in their classes. During the school board meeting the evening of Aug. 1, the board was presented with a certificate that the Superior High School once again was awarded their North Central Accreditation. The school has been accredited for 88 years. The NCA accreditation is important as it certifies that the coursed offered at the high school will be recognized by higher education institutions and trade schools.

The Superior Optimist Club hosted another successful Magma Royale fundraiser. This event is the group’s primary fundraiser. “Our event is a huge success due to the investment of those local businesses and

corporations who contribute generous sponsorships along with those who provide prizes and donations from throughout the region,” said JoAnn Besich, the Optimist Club Treasurer. Attendance reached over 100 guests

who enjoyed a night of Vegas style fun, a delicious buffet, and lots of fun throughout the evening. The live auction item, which was an underground tour donated by Resolution Copper mine, created a huge bidding war, which the

highest bidder won the tour for $400. Mark your calendars for the 2019 Magma Royale event for Saturday, Aug. 3, 2019. You really don’t want to miss this event. Laissez les bons temps rouler!

PHOENIX – To improve access and parking, reconstruction at the Desert Wells Multi-Use Area requires the popular off-highway-vehicle riding area to be closed starting Aug. 1 for up to 90 days, State Land Commissioner Lisa Atkins announced. The entire Desert Wells Multi-Use Area will be closed during reconstruction, as the work in-volves its only entrance, near mile marker 207 on U.S. 60 southeast of Gold Canyon, Commissioner

Atkins said. The grading and leveling of the entryway and parking area is funded by grants from Arizona State Parks & Trails and the U.S. Highway Administration’s Recre-ational Trails Program. Desert Wells is the only off-highway vehicle riding area with designated trails on Arizona State Trust Land. While public use of Trust land is not prohibited, it is regulated to ensure protection of the land and its resources and compensation to the beneficiaries for its use. Today the Arizona State Land Depart-ment pro-actively manages more than 9.2 million acres of Trust land, which is 13 percent of the land within the State of Arizona.
