Renderplas PVCu beads aremanufactured locally from 100%recycled materials for white, and upto 96% in other colours; offcuts arerecycled, and all of the PVCu we use

is recyclable. Our PVCu beads also assist Part Lcompliance by eliminating the cold bridges thatcould be caused by steel beads.

Renderplas has also taken the lead in providingEcopoint calculations for its products to assist thespecifier in lowering carbon production. Anindependent environmental profile awarded ourPVCu beads an “excellent” Ecopoint rating of just0.004 per kg installed.

2 AestheticsRenderplas beads are designed to provide an unobtrusive, smartinstallation. The extremely narrow arris makes them ideal forscratched or scraped finishes. Weoffer a wide choice of profiles forstraight, durable joints, sharp linesand clean corners. RenderplasPVCu beads are guaranteed neverto rust and they will not stain likemetal beads can do.

3 StrengthRenderplas PVCu beads are impactresistant and dissipate shockwavesreducing impact damage. They canoften be re-rendered without choppingout the bead, which is very unlikely inthe case of metal. Renderplas’ superiorY shape design with an arrowheadarris provides the maximum renderthickness and strength. Metal cornershave a large folded arris reducingrender thickness at the mostvulnerable point.

1 DesignThe superior design of Renderplasbeads greatly reduces the occurrenceof capillary action and therefore wateringress between the bead and therender system. Less well designedbeads can include ‘channels’ that maynot be completely filled with renderand after a few years of freeze-thawaction spalling may occur whichweakens / cracks the render system.

PVCu drylining beads

Renderplas PVCu drylining beads offer the perfect solution for skimplastering and drywall applications. Because they are made locally fromcost-effective recycled PVCu, they offer a value for money alternative tometal products. They are guaranteed not to stain during a lengthy dryingout process or in situations with high moisture or salt such as kitchens,bathrooms and pool enclosures. They are particularly well suited toschools, prisons and hospitals as they do not provide any threat to safetyeither after a heavy impact or if pulled out of the wall.



ApplicationCorner beads provide a clean edgeand impact protection on externalcorners. Arch beads create smoothcurves in arched reveals. Edgebeads provide a clean attractivestop to plasterboard where it meetsanother finish, such as a brick wallor door frame, and preventcracking. Architrave beads providea shadow gap between the walland ceilings, skirting boards anddoor frames.

PerformanceLike all Renderplas products, thedrylining range is manufactured fromexterior grade, impact resistant, UVstable unplasticised PVCu. Theyoffer several benefits over metalbeads whilst still giving excellentprotection from impact and providingclean edges that often do not needpainting. PVCu beads areguaranteed never to rust and theywill not stain like metal beads can doin lengthy drying periods. They arethe perfect choice in situations withhigh moisture or salt such askitchens, bathrooms and pool

enclosures, but are equally suited toall general plasterboard applications.

Health & SafetyPVCu beads are completely safe tohandle during application and do nothave the razor sharp edges of cutmetal. They are also preferred inschools, hospitals and prisons asthey do not provide any threat tosafety either after a heavy impact orif pulled out of the wall.

Renderplas PVCu beads are all made locally from exterior grade UV resistantPVCu so they can be installed both inside and out. They are fast and easy toinstall and perfect for all renders including sand and cement. Standard industrypractice can be used on blockwork, timber frame and external wall insulationsystems to cut and fix the beads which are safer to handle than cut metal.

BlockworkOn blockwork, beads are set onto render dabs to therequired depth and plumbed straight. Adhesive mortarcan also be used for faster drying and to preventslipping. Larger profiles, particularly Powerbeads, can befixed with non-corrosive mechanical fixings alone as theflexible wings take up irregularities in the background,with the strong arris remaining straight. Nail clouts orhammer-in plug fixings are suitable for this.

Timber frame and external wall insulation systemsOn timber frame and external wall insulation systems,there is no need to set the beads onto render or adhesivemortar if the surface is level. Suitable fixings should bechosen depending on the background.

Assess the substrate forlarge irregularities. Theseshould be dubbed out withmortar which is thenallowed to set hard prior toapplication of beading.

1 Cut beads to the requiredlength. Tin snips arenormally used, or a finetoothed saw for precisionmitres or cutting largermovement joints.

2 Trowel on render dabs ontothe background surface.Adhesive mortar can beused instead to increasethe level of grip and reduceslipping.

Set stop beads into therender dabs and push intoreveals against windowand door frames. Pushcorner beads ontoexternal corners and tapto level.

4 Once the beads arealigned, apply render over the wings and allow to set hard.

5 Fix bellcast beads onto acontinuous line of renderdabs, or better still, ontoadhesive mortar to preventslipping.

Alternatively nail clouts orhammer-in plug fixings canbe used along the lengthof the bellcast bead every300-700mm.

7 The beads are rigidenough for one person tofix alone. When usinghammer-in fixings, thestrong arris helps preventthe bead from deflecting.

8 At a change of finish, stopbeads can be fixed eithermechanically or ontorender or mortar dabs.

Leave a gap of 8-14mmbetween bellcast beads ata movement joint and fixthe bead over the top onrender dabs, adhesivemortar or with mechanicalfixings and plumb straight.

10 Once the render dabs ormortar have set hard, thesystem is ready forrendering.

11 Where beads meet,compound mitres give thebest even finish especiallyin highly visible areas, butwings can be overlappedinstead to save time.

Sand and cement render is applied to the requireddepth. Through-colourrender is applied 2-3mmthicker than the requiredfinish.

13 Care should be taken topush the render into theedges of the beading toeliminate air pockets.

14 When scraping backthrough-colour render, takecare not to make contactwith the flexible membraneon the movement joint asthis will cause it to fail.

The render should be leftlevel with the edges of thebeads which are exposedto give a neat finish.

16 Movement joints comewith a protective strip overthe flexible membrane.This is removed as therender is going off butbefore it sets hard.

17 All beads can be wipeddown where necessary.The end result is asuperior finish, evenwithout painting.

The award-winningcontractor has used over 3,000metres of Renderplas beading forvarious new build and refurbishmentcontracts, from hotels, luxury

Based in Islington, North Londonsince 1987, David AndrewsConstruction has gained experiencein all types of plastering and relatedservices, including specialistplasterwork for listed buildings andexternal insulated render systems, aswell as acoustic ceilings and fireprotection partitioning. RenderplasPVCu beads ensure a reliable result,whatever the application, says thecompany’s Project Manager, IanEnglishby. “We use them on aregular basis because they are so

versatile and perform equally wellwith standard and specialist plastersand rendering systems,” hecomments. “Their flexibilitycompared with metal alternatives isideal for curved rendering, such asarches, which were a feature in arecent refurbishment project at theVictoria and Albert Museum.”

Major barracks improvements forservice personnel at Tidworth,Wiltshire, feature external wallsnewly rendered with militaryprecision using Powerbead PVCubeading from Renderplas to ensure well-regimented joints,corners and edges.

Powerbead is Renderplas’ newgeneration of PVCu beading,offering the contractor significanttime and cost savings. ConcreteRepairs Ltd, specialist in externalenvelope renovation, selectedRenderplas to supply the 6.5km ofbeading needed for rendering atTidworth as part of ProjectAllenby/Connaught.

Aspire Defence, a joint venturebetween Carillion and KBR, is delivering ProjectAllenby/Connaught, the largestinfrastructure PFI ever let by theMinistry of Defence. The quality oflife for over 18,700 soldiers, 20% ofthe British Army, is improvingthanks to the provision of modern,high quality, fully serviced andpurpose built living and workingaccommodation across thegarrisons of Aldershot andSalisbury Plain.

The Project is already significantlyimproving the lives of soldiers, atwhat is a crucial time for many,with more than 4,100 soldiershaving already moved into theirown single en-suite livingaccommodation. The new andrefurbished buildings include JuniorRanks Single Living

Accommodation (JRSLA) blocks,eight-man houses, dining facilities,mess halls, offices, stores,workshops as well as sports andleisure facilities which incorporate

high performing materials in theexternal envelopes to improveoverall efficiency.

Olu Ogunwale, Contracts Managerat Concrete Repairs, says energyefficiency of an external walldepends on materials and theiruse. “When selecting the optimumwall covering solution, we choosehigh quality materials and applythem exactly to specification. Even small details like using wiremesh or a metal bead can ruin the performance in critical areas by introducing potential thermalbridges.”

Mr Ogunwale says Concrete Repairschose Renderplas as the onlypartner able to deliver exactly whatwas required. “We needed someoneto supply a bead that would work

equally well on refurbishment andnew-build walls. We consideredtraditional stainless steel beading,but we knew there would beperformance issues and we were

aware of its high cost, the difficultyof cutting it, and the potential forextra maintenance costs that occurif the arris is exposed.”

Powerbead was selected as itmeets MoD requirements onsustainability and value for money. It is a second generation PVCubead design, with beads fixeddirectly to the substrate withoutmortar, to save time and money.The beads’ extremely strong edgeshold their straightness, while thewings flex to take up anyirregularities in the blockwork.

Mr Ogunwale says: “Beware oflesser PVCu beads – Powerbead isthe stiffest bead with the widestwing, which makes it so easy towork with. It’s simple to cut to sizeand it doesn’t flex when render istrowelled on. We have also foundthat its design saves render, asdepth-setting is more accurate.”

Renderplas PVCu render beads arecontributing to the weather-tightexternal envelope of oak framebuildings by Welsh Oak Frame.Providing ultra strong straight edgesand easy fixing, bellcast beads fromthe Renderplas Powerbead rangeare being used in conjunction with aweatherproof render finish toprevent rainwater penetrating theunderlying substrate of Welsh OakFrame’s patented single wallsystem, comprising composite infillpanels on an oak frame.

Welsh Oak Frame’s highspecification system utilisesmodern materials to replicate amedieval method of constructionthat allows the attractive oak framestructure to be viewed from theinside as well as the outside of thebuilding. Based in Caersws, mid Wales, WelshOak Frame designs and buildsunique oak frame homes andextensions that comply with BuildingRegulations and come with fullNHBC warranties. Manufactured off-site, the company’s composite infillpanels are delivered to site once thebuilding’s skeletal oak frame iscomplete and installed by Welsh OakFrame’s skilled team. Renderplas15mm bellcast Powerbeads arestapled to the panels prior to a two-coat finish of either a microporouspre-mix render or a traditional sandand cement render to a depth of upto 17mm, depending on the project

specification. Welsh Oak Frameestimates that up to 500 linearmetres of Renderplas Powerbeadscan be used in the construction of anew oak frame house.

A second generation of PVCubeading developed by Renderplas,Powerbeads can be fixed directly tothe substrate, saving time andmoney on site. Extremely rigidedges keep the PVCu bead straightwhilst it is being fixed and theflexible wings and back plates takeup small irregularities in thesubstrate without the need to dub out.
