Every single day, every moment of the day, every child is better off because of his/her interactions with every staff member. Hello PWSSD Team! Welcome to August as we begin our final preparation for the start of the 2018-19 school year! I hope you are having an opportunity to relax a little and spend time with family and friends. Thank you to everyone who worked throughout the summer to close out last school year and begin preparing for this school year (cleaning and preparing classrooms; handling student registrations and parent questions; participating on interview teams; involvement in professional growth and training; setting up classrooms; and working with construction contractors). I always look forward to the start of a new school year to welcome our students back and our new staff members as we bring our entire staff back together again for another exciting year. Opening Day Schedule Opening day for all staff members is Monday, August 27 th at 7:45 a.m. We will have an unusual venue for the morning session as we come together to celebrate our students and another school year. Since the auditorium will still be under construction, we will begin at the Bandshell in the Port Washington Veteran’s Memorial Park along the lake. If it rains, we will be in the high school gymnasium. If we need to move indoors, that decision will be made on Friday afternoon and posted on our website and sent to all staff via email. As you can tell from the schedule, our opening morning will have a fitness theme (fitness attire or comfortable clothing is appropriate), as we celebrate our togetherness in this special place in preparing for our students’ arrival. Also, please bring a lawn chair. Welcome New Staff Members Let’s all welcome our new staff members. The list of new staff is attached. They are all personable, upbeat, and genuinely care about kids. You will enjoy working with them. Youth Mental Health First Aid Class Please note that we are offering another Youth Mental Health First Aid class, in response to the Board’s goal of training all staff members. It will be on August 23 rd at the District Office. Please contact Dan Solórzano, Jen Eason, or Julie Dornburg if you are interested in a very informative and enjoyable experience. In-House Graduate Course Offering The very popular in-house course entitled, “Effective Responses to Student Bullying” is full for this fall semester, and it will be offered again second semester. able to facilitate some book studies for people who do not need the credit. The expectation is for all of us to follow the philosophies and approaches outlined in this course being taught by Duane Woelfel, Chris Surfus, and me. DPI’s Changes to Educator Licensing The Governor’s 2017-19 state budget established new requirements for the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) regarding educator licensing. The DPI licensing website continues to provide the most current information as these changes are enacted. Please review the most recent Lifetime Licensure Updates at: https://dpi.wi.gov/news/dpi-connected/lifetime-licensure-updates. Please note that is no longer necessary for staff members’ to send a copy of their educator licenses to the Superintendent’s Office, because this information is publically accessible online. However, it remains the responsibility of all certified staff to be aware of their licensure renewal requirements and to meet DPI’s application deadlines. Heidi Belohlav (Ext. 6005) can answer many general questions regarding educator licensing. For additional assistance, you can email a DPI representative at: https://dpi.wi.gov/support/contact-us Additional Attachments You will find the following additional attachments in this Welcome Back Packet:

IN-HOUSE GRADUATE COURSE OFFERING

Effective Responses to Student Bullying January–March, 2018

Course Description: This is a three-credit graduate-level course offered to interested PWSSD staff members. The course is accredited by Colorado State-Pueblo University, and taught in-house by PWSSD administrators. Course Concept and Content: In order for educators to effectively respond to “bullying,” they need to understand the distinction between rude behavior, mean behavior, and actual bullying. Each of these types of behavior require different responses to be effective in supporting students’ well-being and positive decision-making. Using this concept as a base, this course will explore knowing bullying when you see it; establishing connections with kids; stopping bullying; dealing directly with cyber-bullying; building social and emotional competence; turning bystanders into helpers; and reaching out to kids who bully. We will explore a variety of activities to help students better understand the difference between the three types of behavior, and we will analyze several case studies. The end results will be a much stronger understanding of the concept called “bullying,” specific strategies to assist students, and the development of more confidence in your ability to observe and redirect negative student behaviors. Instructors: Dr. Michael R. Weber, Christi A. Surfus, Duane A. Woelfel Required Text: 8 Keys to End Bullying – Strategies for Parents & Schools by Signe Whitson Recommended Supplemental Resource: 8 Keys to End Bullying Activity Book – Companion Guide for Parents & Educators by Signe Whitson Course Schedule: Sessions will take place in the District Office Board Room from 3:45-5:15 p.m. on the following dates:

1) Thursday, January 24, 2019 2) Thursday, February 7, 2019 3) Thursday, February 21, 2019 4) Thursday, March 14, 2019

Registration: Registration information and instructions will be available beginning approximately December 3, 2018 on the District website at www.pwssd.k12.wi.us. The class is limited to 25 participants. Dr. Michael R. Weber, Superintendent of Schools Port Washington-Saukville School District 262-268-6005 • [email protected]
