Healthcare in a broader sense is not just merely people taking care of others but rather making a difference in someone’s life. Whether you are a doctor, nurse, or clinical support, the tasks you perform in healthcare will significantly contribute to helping people which will positively influence their lives. This is what motivated me to choose a career in the healthcare industry and continuously develop my role in healthcare by studying at Westford University College.

On the other hand, being a healthcare worker is not easy especially in this challenging period.

COVID 19 has created a negative impact on our health as well as mental and emotional stress especially for frontliners who have to deal with extreme circumstances. During the start of the pandemic, everyone experienced fear and it has been a difficult time for all. As a healthcare professional who has been working away from home, this pandemic has made me think about aspects such as contracting the virus myself and passing it on to others, the safety of my loved ones whom I have not seen for a long time, the economy and job uncertainty, financial burdens, work exhaustion while pursuing studies and so on. I asked myself are we still safe at this point? How are we going to overcome this COVID 19 pandemic? At the peak of COVID 19, we felt extreme pressure due to increase workload and lack of manpower as we need to cover up the work-load of our colleagues who have contracted the virus.

Added to this are the exhaustion from wearing a mask, physical distancing, lockdowns, and fear of being COVID 19 positive. To balance the risk with the urgent needs of the job, I always keepmyself aware of the best practices which must be implemented in terms of protecting myself andsupporting others to prevent transmission of the virus. This includes hand hygiene, regularlycleaning the workspace, participating in risk assessment, infec-tion control, and crisis management,

communicating with my colleagues, and at the same time promote active listening and peer support. While the way we work has significantly been impacted by the pandemic and the word work-life balance has long been a myth, it is important to be positive amidst the situation and manage the stressors at work to achieve productivity while maintaining a healthy lifestyle. I take measures such as regular sleeping and eating patterns, communicating with my family through video call, reading books or maga-zines as well as engaging in physical activity. Being resilient and moving forward is important to cope up with the negative consequences of Covid 19. Safety is always a priority and to overcome this pandemic which seems to have no end, it is not just your battle but It is a collaborative effort of doctors, nurses, administrative staff, support service, patients and every-one who are behind the scene putting their entire effort and initiative to conquerthis fight against the pandemic. “We are all in this together.”

It was my aspiration when I was young to become a doctor; to take care of people and I am always fascinated about doing surgery (until today). Being in the average income family bracket back home, my parents couldn’t afford medical school, thus being a nurse was the nearest thing that could enable me to care for people. Through nursing, I discovered that there is more to this profession than meets the eye. It is the heart of the healthcare industry and I’m glad and proud to be a nurse.

While in the healthcare industry, I was always leading for quality, patient safety and accreditation. COVID-19 was a challenge as best practices are put to test and are changed now and then due to factors such as manage-ment of infected people including staff, shortage of resources and staff due to sickness or quarantine periods, and many more. Communication is another major challenge within and outside our facilities. If an organiza-tion in itself is not united, cooperation, coordination and decision-making are compromised. But that was when I was part of Admin.

Today, with my new role as COVID-19 Response Nurse, I consider myself in the frontline and one of the many arms helping the UAE’s fight at this time of the pandemic. I, as a nurse, have specialized in doing the PCR test in this role. I am most of the time on call to respond whenever my service is required. I can see and feel the pandemic effect – people stuck/quaran-tined, can’t go home to their countries, businesses are affected, activities disrupted, etc. But on the other hand, this situation had brought me to realize what’s most important – the health of my family and friends that I care about.

I know that my job is one of the pieces that completes the puzzle, and if I don’t do it, then who will? I believe I am at the right time and place and this is my purpose. On the other hand, being extra careful and following protocols are keys to being safe and decreasing that risk of the job I do today.

There are a few moments that I could proudly share:oSuccessfully lead a World Quality Week in my previous organization (the first) with lots of activities and involvement from doctors, nurses, and admin, led several successful JCI Accreditations, some were the firsts; such as some hospital and medical clinics/centers in Saudi and UAE (Dubai, Fujairah, Ajman)

Conducted mass PCR testing and swabbed 231 persons in just 4 hours as part of the COVID-19 program of Abu Dhabi.

I have strong faith in God to keep going; that all that happens is intended and is for a reason. I am a very positive and full of hope kind of person. My mindset is very important to me, I believe that we are what we think – so I always think positive, happy and hopeful. The mind is very powerful, and can you imagine if all people will think like this? Well, that’s for you to answer. Mental health is as important as physical health and it should come from within to have a healthy mind. Again, we are what we think. Family and friends are most important for me and there are few platforms that we can use to still be connected. I make sure that I stay busy – that’s why I enrolled in the MBA program now that I have plenty of time on my hand. I also enjoy sports, either running or badminton at least once a week.

Becoming a doctor was my childhood dream. It did not change even when I encountered so many obstacles. I remember telling my friend before that I cannot picture myself doing anything else in the future other than becoming a doctor.

Since the pandemic started in March 2020, I was assigned to a Covid clinic in Abu Dhabi. I was also sent to rural areas to do Covid mass test-ing. At first, I admit I was apprehensive to accept the assignment because of the danger I might bring home to my family. Eventually, the passion and drive to be of service, knowing that this is the profession I chose for myself, kept me going.

With the help of the people that surrounded me, I was able to perform well in our daily grind. We made sure we looked out for each other especially in the middle of toxicity. Everyone was exposed and we couldn't guarantee that we would be protected all the time. Even after practicing the ultimate precautions, we could not totally rule out the risk of exposure and contraction of the virus. With that risk in mind, we rely on our colleagues that we all give our best shot to not just protect ourselves but everyone around us, at the same time perform our duties to serve the patients.

At the height of the pandemic, when everyone seemed down and hope-less including our team, everyone was scared of their own safety. Every day, I see increasing numbers of positive patients with mild to moderate symptoms, but I have never heard any of my team members saying that they are going to give up. Everyone is still willing to go to work, even extending their working hours just to accommodate the needs of each patient. I know being in the healthcare industry is one

of the noblest professions, but in times like these,I realized having this opportunity to serve despite our circumstances and challenges is a gift. It made me feel blessed and proud to be given such an opportunity. Aside from taking necessary precautions, (vita-mins, PPE, and presence of mind all the time) I make sure to protect my mental health. I made it a habit that the stress and pressures at work remain at work. Once I’m home, I focus on being a mother and a wife. In that way, it keeps me distracted from negativity and keeps me motivat-ed to go to work the following day.

To be honest, I always thought of myself as a leader since I was a kid. Maybe in my field in dentistry, it is a little bit difficult, as our main objective is to treat people. This changed when I was appointed in AL Garhoud private hospital when I met our medical director who was a specialized emergency doctor, and he shifted his career to a more administrative role. He was a confident and assertive individual. He reflected all the attributes of a good leader. At that point, I said to myself that is what I want to be in the next 5 years, and if he was able to do it why can’t I. Therefore, I started searching for the means to start my first steps in achieving that goal, and I eventually found that getting an MBA in healthcare management would be the right step to pursue my dream.

Being a dentist means that you are in direct contact with your patients. In normal circumstances, a dentist should wear a pair of gloves and a mask to protect himself and the patient. However, during the Covid 19 pandemic this was not enough. In the first weeks of the pandemic, we were forced to stop working because of the fear of contamination. Later we were treating the patients while wearing full PPE like disposable gowns, double masks, double gloves, and a face shield. In the beginning, we performed only urgent cases, but now we are doing elective proce-dures as well with all our precautions.

It is challenging to be a dentist in such a difficult period. You come every day risking yourself and your loved ones as the danger of acquiring the deadly virus is still very much there. Nevertheless, I have always kept in

mind my identity and my role in life which is to help to mitigate the pain and discomfort of others. Many patients cannot withstand dental pain and hence, it is my duty with fellow dentists to relieve their suffering despite the stakes of the pandemic crisis. I believe the best experience a doctor can have is when the patient is happy and relieved from pain. When I do root canal treatments, for example, the patient comes to me with severe pain that he cannot do anything unless this discomfort is removed. Therefore, when I treat the infected tooth and the patient feels well, this gives me a massive sense of content and satisfaction.

I remember one elderly female patient began to pray for me because I treated her tooth, it was truly a joyful and proud moment.

Well, I try my best to be focused all the time in the clinic because my actions could be detrimental to people’s lives. To do that, I ensure to have a good night's sleep for approximately 8 hours a day, maintain a healthy diet as much as possible, and exercise for 4 days a week. Also, family time on weekends is precious as spending quality time with my children is a priority. These are the essential factors that keep me ener-gized and concentrated on the upcoming tasks.

Healthcare is one industry that never has enough resources no matter how many physicians, hospitals, clinics come into existence. Throughout the world, there is a severe shortage of healthcare professionals, health-care specialists are especially sought after during new epidemics and pandemics. Ever since I was a child, I have observed that no matter who you are you need good healthcare providers to take care of you in some of the most troublesome times of your life. The Healthcare industry becomes part of people's lives when they are the most helpless and in dire need. I chose healthcare so that I could be the one who could take care of others and do my bit in where it mattered the most.To be honest the COVID -19 pandemic has been like a roller coaster ride experience for me. Initially, it was very scary as everything was new, so many sick patients, no proven treatment, the fear of contracting the illness, the fear of transmitting it to my family, the fear of not being able to breathe properly due to the PPE’s. Soon after that, I adapted to the situation, the pandemic picked up speed it seemed like the task of providing support was an endless one. The patient’s kept coming in leading to a lack of beds in almost every hospital. Makeshift arrangements were made to accommodate them. Then this became the new normal and all regular work was put on hold, the PPE became our new uniform, the pressure sores on our face became our pride and staying in isolation at home became essential.

Ever since COVID, I have never removed my mask at work. At work, we have set up strict norms of not sharing common places ever. Getting areas sanitized before use so that we don't spread infec-tions to colleagues is something the hospital is very particular about. At home, I maintain social distancing. If I suffer from any cold or COVID-re-lated symptoms, I wear a mask and stay in isola-tion at home to prevent further spread to my family.I have seen several families who have abandoned patients in the fear of contracting the illness. Families don't turn up for the last rites as well. While we being completely unrelated, strangers to the patients stood by them and didn't let them feel that they were alone. The very thought of not leav-ing them alone and just being there for them made me feel very proud of being in the healthcare industry. We didn't let our fears come in between our relationship with the patients in contrast to related family members.Regular intake of vitamins helps in boosting my immunity, adequate hydration helps me meet my losses due to the PPE’s. Good sleep when I am off duty, lots of greens and a high protein diet keep me active. Most importantly good family time keeps me motivated to continue to perform my duties.

Bowling compitition is an annual bowling competition that Westford organizes for all undergraduate students. Westford has been doing it excellently until last year, how-ever this year it had to organize this event keeping in mind the new normal i.e. social distancing with masks on and other necessary precautionary measures of Covid-19. It was a delight to see students so passionate and enthusiastic and geared up for the competition.

This competition witnessed participation from all our students; new joiners, students from the morning, after-noon, evening, and weekend batches. Students proudly turned up in their red Westford Shirts and hurriedly took their places near their lanes. It was ensured that appro-priate lanes were allocated to the students maintaining social distancing norms. Snacks and drinks were served at their relevant tables closest to the allocated lanes for individual groups. The students had a great time meeting their friends after a long haul and enjoyed spending time outside of their homes. They wanted to play more rounds of the competi-tion and showed no signs of tiredness or willingness to get back home! Finally, we had our winners for the boy's team first place was secured by Team Low gravity followed by THE MVP’s and the PINS. For the Girls Team, first place was secured by team AMIGAS Followed by PHEONIX & TEAM N7. The best player in the boy's category was Wali Naeem and the Best player in the girl's Category was Naineb Nawab.

“The day of the Bowling Competition has been one of the great days in the year 2020. Even after the pandemic, the university organized such a fun event where several teams both girls and boys played. Our team saw it as an opportunity to enjoy the game and see everyone else from the university after a long time. However, between this enjoyment, our team “Amigos” scored about 309 points and won the event among the girl's teams. This was such an unexpected victory. The two hours at the Dubai Inter-national Bowling Center were the best ones where we helped each other learn and score in the game and met our friends after a long time. I would like to thank West-ford University College for providing us this opportunity even during the pandemic and letting us enjoy the day to the fullest.” -Banmeet Kaur

Westford Bowling Championship 2020

“I'm so grateful to Westford for planning this event as I got to spend quality time with my friends after so long! We all had so much fun bowling and had no intention of winning at all so the win was an absolute surprise for all of us. Can't wait to go back next year already!” -Sanaz Abid

“I am thankful to Westford for organizing this event during such a difficult time. I really enjoyed every moment spent with my team members at the bowling Centre. It was an amazing experience.”

-Radhika Parkash

“I had an amazing time with all my team members and faculty in the bowling competition. It was a pleasure for me to join this team because we had teamwork, confidence, and cheered each other. We are glad to know that we are in a university that has good facili-ties and organizes competitions throughout the year. I was the very excited to participate in the bowling com-petition. Thank you for giving me such an opportunity!”

- Rakshan Altaf Salah

“The experience in the bowling tournament was great and the last time I played my team came second in this tournament and this this time we wanted to come first and we manged to achieved that, so I am really happy and thanks for my team which gave 100 percent. Thank you, Westford, for this wonderful and sporty experience.” - Joe Vass

“The moment I stepped into the bowling alley, I could feel the thrill of the competition around me. As an individual, competition encourages me to go that extra mile and that's exactly what I did. As a sports-man, discipline is the key, that's what me and my team had to maintain. We stayed disciplined, motivated each other after every ball was rolled and ended up winning the competition. Overall, it was a great expe-rience, full of intensity especially after the pandemic, all the students were eager to showcase their skills. I would like to congratulate my team and give a shout out to Westford for organising an amazing bowling tournament. I look forward to participating in more events like this in the future. Thank you!”

Emirates Environmental Group is a non-governmental, professional working group that educates and inspires future generations on matters of environmental conservation. Annual-ly, they host the Green Initiative "For Our Emirates We Plant.".

This year's campaign was held in Al Qudra on December 20, 2020. The event recognized and supported individuals, and organizations that successfully pursue recycling programs regularly. That same day, Westford University College, along with other organizations, planted 11 trees, each with a variety of environmental benefits. Westford joined the EEG program to aid in their 2000 tree planting activities, and to celebrate 11 years of their successful operations in the UAE.Because the initiative was organized during the pandemic, they were aware of all the standard precautions and social distancing that everyone was very appreciative of.

The Emirate Environmental Group continues its legacy by establishing an open green space in the UAE. Under the umbrella of the project, which started in 2007, EEG has man-aged to plant more than 2,098,669 native trees in the UAE since the program was initiated. This has led to CO2 depletion of 12 375 MT in UAE.

It has been Westford’s initiative to bring the best in the class learning experience to its learners. Mr. Andrew Stotter Brooks joined us on Saturday, the 12th of December for a webinar. An HR professional with more than thirty years of senior Human Resources Manage-ment practice in Retail, Hospitality, Leisure, and Avia-tion- Andrew talked to us about how the role of HR would evolve post the COVID situation. Such sessions facilitate the programs that Westford offers.

Before joining Abu Dhabi and Etihad Aviation Group, he worked for seven years with Alshaya Group as the Head of Learning, supporting the career development of more than 90,000 team members in 19 countries. In addition to his professional development work with Alshaya, Hilton, YUM and P&O, he has been an Executive indus-try coach for American University Dubai, Greenwich and Nottingham Universities, Rolls Royce and Bass. People development is his passion, cles to achievement, whilst creating an environment of trust and the ability to avoid ambiguity.

Having such a rich experience Andrew stressed upon a wide range of topics- from Leadership to Coaching to Business Agility to a few tips to sustain and emerge stronger from the global pandemic. “Coaching is differ-ent from teaching.” Andrew highlighted the imperative of knowing when and why to coach. He said, “If you're trying to fix an engine on an airplane we have more than just one tool. Coaching is like that- you have numerous tools. In reality, the biggest challenge is understanding which tool to use when.” As businesses cope financially and emotionally from the global pandemic, Andrew confirms that the role of a Leader gets placed right at the top- as the most critical. The ability to be a great leader comes from being a good listener and being empathetic. He shared insights from his 30 years of experience and stated, “a leader must be a Master of the Process and not the Master of a Problem.” He further stressed on the importance of Agility that must seep into businesses and its people. Considering that change is necessary, he said change is much an outcome of realization- where the role of a leader and a coach comes in.

The year 2020 is registered in history due to the impact of the COVD-19 pandemic which adversely affected the work and lives of the global community. The extremely dangerous coro-navirus created a ripple effect in the education industry forc-ing the closure of schools and colleges across the globe, taking a huge toll on the normal functioning of the academic institu-tions with unprecedented changes. Remote work, campus closure, and strain in day-to-day operational activities were common during these times. The time required an adequate address to maintain a balance for keeping oneself safe, while also assuring an uninterrupted transition in students’ academ-ic journey. In such times, Westford University College (WUC) stood strong with its record of 10 years of indisputable success in Online and onsite education. Digital learning became the core of educational fundamentals with support from all stake-holders. With persistence as the key attribute, WUC celebrated many of its new partnerships and courses in 2020 with impactful plans for 2021:

BA (Hons) in Business by Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) and B.Sc. (Hons) in Business Management by Canter-bury Christchurch University (CCCU), UK are the prestigious programs added to the array. One myth that always seems to attach itself to the idea of minimalism is perhaps the very image that may pop up in most people’s minds when they think of minimalism, which is just pure emptiness. Loads of space and complete neglect for all kinds of possessions besides the very essen-tials. Buying into the latest trends isn’t on the agenda of any minimalist, neither is wasting time or energy on fleeting fashion. Perhaps this has brought upon the myth that choosing to be a minimalist or embracing the lifestyle is willingly giving in to being ‘boring’. Minimalism is a lifestyle choice that has made its relevance known in all parts of our lives. It is a sort of personal protest to the maximal and needlessly extravagant lifestyle, comprising of fast fashion and other equally destructive practices. With a rise in popularity of popular sub-styles like Scandinavian and Japanese minimalism as well as decluttering gurus like Marie Kondo, there is no surprise as to why it has become so well-known.

However, minimalism does not equate to not caring about anything material or detaching oneself from everything that brings joy. In fact, a minimal lifestyle usually comes with the benefit of utilizing all the time that may otherwise be spent acquiring material possessions for something far more rewarding. It also means practicality and can help curb overspending and hoarding. There is a self-removal of sorts from things that ultimately, do not serve much of a purpose. Owning less and not feeling the need to pursue every new thing may seem boring to some, but ultimately, it is a lifestyle that brings satisfaction and contentment, a lifestyle far removed from transient joys.

Very early in my career, just after completing my undergraduate degree, I received an offer from an organization that was certified as a “Great place to work”. I was deeply saddened that I couldn’t accept the offer because of location constraints. I joined another institution and felt quite settled in academia. I decided to take up the job at Westford in 2020 and while I was in the process of moving to Westford it was certified as a “Great place to work”. I felt like the entire universe conspired to make my former dream come true.

I joined 4 months back amidst the pandemic and but was very confident about having made the right decision. It has been a wonderful experience with team Westford, everyone welcomed me warmly. A very positive work environment I must say. I feel I am being entrusted with responsibilities every day and there there is always something new to learn which is the kind of workplace I wanted to be in. Proud to be a Westfordian!

It has been Westford’s initiative to bring the best in the class learning experience to its learners. Industry expert conversations provide a platform for our learners to indulge in in-depth QnA’s and confirm a range of solutions and outcomes. Keep-ing in line with this objective Westford organized a Masterclass on Branding and Visual Merchanding Strategies for its HND Art & Design (fashion) students who were undertaking the Branding & Identity module as part of their course.

"I have found one of the most crucial elements necessary at the beginning of a new business venture that often goes overlooked or in some cases completely unheard of, is Branding!” It is nearly impossible for new-age designers to mark their place with the whirlpool of creativity this industry runs with- season by season. From the colors, lighting to the fragrance and displays - branding in the fashion industry is up and beyond just cuts and sews.

While there are multiple contributing factors to this dilemma, the biggest one is that most designers are not spending enough time creating an experi-ence around what they’re offering. To throw some light on this- Mr. Rafi Nissar conducted a workshop with our HND Art & Design learners. With Visual Merchandising as the theme, Mr. Rafi explained how brand identity is the entire experience of your brand, not just the visuals, but rather its core, its foundation, integrity and values. There are obvious visual elements that pull a brand together, the web design, logo, packaging, and font that are undoubtedly important features do define a brand in certain ways, but really…"BRANDING IS THE FEELING PEOPLE HAVE ABOUT YOU."

“Branding & Visual Merchandising Strategies”

Cases of Zara, Coach, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Burberry were discussed during the session- giving a deep dive into how every brand has a story to tell. He said, "Visual Merchandising is like silent selling" and long before the customer knows- Visual Merchandising establishes com-munication with them. The windows truly give you a peek into the store. Mr. Rafi also gave a peek into the UAE market that is much driven by grandeur and glitter. He stressed upon knowing the pulse of the market, the audi-ence, and the aim of merchandising.

Zainab Shabbar, an HND Art & Design learner asked, "why would one go into a Pull&Bear when you get a similar apparel at a Splash?" To this, Mr. Rafi explained how "Branding plays a part in positioning and making a mental image for customers. The quality, material and variety differ ultimately making a value statement for those who choose a Pull&Bear."

The learners also indulged in a quick activity in sketching a store layout.

University is traditionally a place where you can fly out of the nest and assert your independence, away from the confines of family life. So what happens when you end up in the same university as your nearest and/or dearest?

Of course, most people who go to the same university as their siblings do not go there because their family member studies there, they choose it for the course or location. One of the main things that attracted my brother and me to Westford University College was its assignment based evaluations for each of the modules which made our learning experience more fun and flexible and gave us a chance to explore different areas of expertise other than just academics. In the bachelor's course as well in the MBA program, the classroom interactions between the students and professors are what made the learning experience more enjoyable for both of us. Having my brother study in the same college made it only easier for us as we did share

Westford Sibling Story

similar module structures so whenever one of us needed a little guidance we were always there to support each other. While onsite and online learning sharing the same professors during a particular module was also nice as it would be exciting to see reactions of those who were not aware of the fact that we were siblings and them saying how our personalities were the complete opposite, and running into each other on campus was fun as well.

Even going for industry visits together was fun it felt like we were learning more about the corporate world together. Studying in the same school for 14 years made it easier to transition en route the college life. So all in all, studying in the same college has been a unique experience and we’re glad we got to share these experi-ences at Westford University College.

“Wings of Fire” is a memoir published by APJ Abdul Kalam, former president of India and Indian space researcher, in 1999. It is an autobiography of APJ Abdul Kalam covering his early life and his work in Indian space research and missile programs. This book talks about his story as a young boy who came from a humble background and then went on to become a main player in the Indian space research and later on became the President of India.

The initial chapter of "Wings of Fire" provided interesting glances of religious harmony that existed before India's parti-tion. It was an interesting read, to understand how democracy took shape in the context of India. Later in the chapters, Abdul Kalam talks about his early days and dreams as a child, he wanted to be an air force pilot, but he couldn’t clear his interview, disappointed Kalam during this time got an opportunity to meet Swami Sivananda and his impeccable words gave a new meaning to Kalam and shaped his future:

"Accept your destiny and go ahead with your life. You are not destined to become an Air Force pilot. What you are destined to become is not revealed now but it is predetermined. Forget the failure, as it was essential to lead you to your destined path. Search, instead, for the true purpose of your existence. Become one with yourself, my son! Surrender yourself to the wish of God."

Book Review -WINGS OF FIREBYAPJ ABDUL KALAM

Ms. Shivani VakkielHND – BABM

“Wings of Fire” covers Kalam's personal life only briefly which is strange for an autobiography. However, some areas in the book still left us wanting for more such as his personal life and why he decided to remain single or his activities outside space research (although we can conclude in the end that he was married to science and technology) yet, his reasons to the question why was left for us to prod over. One of the main things that stood out throughout his book is how optimistically he led his life and how simple he made his life. The secret to his success is to ignore the negativity around him.

Often, we become so busy in the chaos of our lives that we make a matrix web around us and get stuck in it like a spider, never are we able to come out of it. APJ Abdul Kalam’s simple life experiences with the help of this book taught us that complexity might bring adventure but simplicity brings purpose to one’s life.

It is indeed a wonderful book to read for anyone who desires to understand that “one should be willing to accept what they cannot change and then change in such a way with that acceptance that no one accepts that they are the same person.” This book according to me gets 5 stars.
