Literacy: Can follow instructions involving several ideas or actions. PE/ D: Handles tools and equipment effectively. Maths: Explores the characteristics of everyday objects and uses mathematical language to describe them. Science: (UW) Talks about features of their immediate environment; Makes observations of plants & animals. Design & Technology (EAD): Safely uses and explores a variety of materials and techniques; Represents their own thoughts and ideas through design and technology. Resources Natural materials such as large branches, sticks, logs, & foliage etc, (If you have no access to natural materials, you could use crates, pipes, sheets, pegs, chairs, etc instead). Associated Risk Assessments Generic Site RA; Collecting & Handling Natural Materials RA; Stick Activities RA; Building Shelters RA. Session Outline • Talk about how we can work together well as a group of superheroes. • Explain we are going to work together to build a superhero hideout to shelter us from our enemies. (Depending on your numbers, you may want to build 2 or 3.) • Demonstrate safe selection, lifting, carrying, releasing and placing of materials. • Work together with the children to create a group shelter/ superhero hideout. • Discuss how we can manage our own safety (age & ability specific) Differentiation LA- Assist with carrying and placement. HA- Can they use experimental learning to work out the best way to place the materials and equipment? Extension Free play for the children as superheroes in their hideout, once you have checked its stability and adapted as necessary.
