Super Hero Databases
Lesson 2
Lesson 2 Aims…
To know different data types.To understand why it is important to put the correct data in the correct data type.To be able to a flat file database table using correct datatypes.
Starter 1
• Explain to the person next to ‘what you think ‘Top Trumps’ is.
Starter 2
• With the person next to you...–What skills do you think a superhero
would have a on ‘Top Trump’ card?• Make a list and record it on the slide in your
Superhero Evidence PPT.
Activity 1 – MS Access
• Using MS Access, create a new database - ‘Top Trump Superheros’.
Activity 2 – Super Hero Categories
• Decide as a class which categories (max 6) you will use for your ‘Superheros’ – e.g.:– Strength– Team Spirit– Size– Power– Skill– Costume
Activity 3 – Creating a Table
• Create a table – ‘tbl_Superhero’ in ‘design view’.
• Add the different categories & data types from Activity 2.
Activity 4 – Adding Superheros
• Add the details of your Superheros to your table.
• Remember to keep the scores between 0 and 10
• Save your table.
Extension – Validations
• Find out what a database validation is.
• How you could use this to prevent people from entering a too high or too low number for each of their superhero skills?
• Add a validation to your strength field so that the user cannot enter a number lower than 1 or higher than 25.
Plenary 1
• Add the following database keywords to your ‘Glossary’ slide in your Superhero Evidence PPT.– Record– Field– Table– Database
• Write a explanation for each keyword in your own words.
Plenary 2
• With the person next to you, discuss...– 3 things you did learnt today in the
lesson– 2 things you think you did well– 1 thing you would like to do or be able
to do better.
