We are happy that you are reading this notebook! This is made for you to explore the Finnish Youth Institute as well as to the City of Mikkeli. In this guide, we have tried to provide you useful and practical information of Finland, Mikkeli and in general about this preparation course. Some of the information may already be familiar for you. 

 Please do not expect this booklet to be perfect ‐ it isn’t! It is only a brief introduction what to expect! 

 You are cordially welcome to Finland and we would be happy if you choose Finnish Youth Institute as your place for a preparation course! We will do our best to make your course pleasant, successful and rewarding as possible, too.

Why to study abroad?

Why to study in Finland?

Finland is a beautiful little state in Fennoscandia which offers wonderful opportunities in higher education. Finland has, at present, 21 university level institutions and 30 univeristies of applied sciences. Finnish education and science policy emphasizes quality, equity, internationalism and efficiency. It contributes the competitiveness of the Finnish welfare society. Degree and exchange students together compose nearly 5 % of the total student enrolment in higher education.  One of the main reasons why a high amount of international students choose Finland to their studying country is a great range of international study programs taught in English language. These studying fields are intended for both international and Finnish students.  Also an attracting reason for choosing Finland as a studying country is its amazing natural and clean environment. Finland is famous for its thousands of lakes, green forests as far as the eye can reach, beautiful white winter time and celebration of light, when the summer in Finland is at its best.   Another strong reason is also the modern studying facilities and advanced technology in the Finnish universities.

Mikkeli has a famous market place in the town centre which is a popular gathering place  for people around Finland, especially at summertime. The town centre has also an observation tower “Naisvuori” where the visitors can climb to the top to see beautiful city of Mikkeli. Mikkeli has also airport for domestic flights, the railway and bus station and beautiful concert hall “Mikaeli”.  

 

The largest employer in the town at the time is the University of Applied Sciences. It employs about 400 full time teaching staff and around 900 support and services staff.  Other employers in Mikkeli are the forestry, printing, paper, farming and other manufacturing sectors.

Finnish Youth Institute (FYI) is an elegant and safe school only 230 km’s from Finland's capital, Helsinki. It has 89 years' experience of providing quality teaching in warm and friendly learning environment. With experienced and qualified teachers FYI offers excellent studying facilities in beautiful surroundings near the center of Mikkeli. Finnish Youth Institute’s relaxed and student oriented environment offers the students two modern computer rooms, library, gym, saunas, washing houses, lounge / poolroom and two cosy dormitories.

Course fee includes

Tuition,  approximately 25 hours / week  Full board: 

o Accommodation in Finnish Youth Institute’s dormitory in double rooms (also at weekends) o Towels and bed linen o Breakfast and two meals at working days  o Free coffee or tea at coffee breaks at working days 

Group pick‐up from Helsinki‐Vantaa airport on arrival day  Comfortable accommodation Finnish Youth Institute offers you convenient accommodation in dormitory which is located in school’s garden area. Housing cost is included to your course fee so you don’t have to worry about your accommodation. This is made for you simple and easy.   The dormitory room is meant for two students. The room has basic furniture: beds, working desks, chairs, cupboard, mattresses and bed linen. Every room has its own shower and toilet. The dormitory has its own lounge with a TV and a common kitchen where you can easily cook and keep your groceries in the fridge.   Finnish Youth Institute has a wireless internet for your use; just bring your laptop with you. Silence is to be respected between 22.00 – 07.00. Smoking is not allowed in the school area or anywhere else in the premises.  Please note that you are responsible of cleaning your own room as well as common areas. Finnish Youth Institute’s cleaning staff will do the general cleaning and the towel and bed linen changes. The schedule will be announced in the beginning of the studies.  Breakfast and two meals at working days

You will have breakfast, lunch and dinner every working day.  This all includes to your course fee. 

At weekends and holidays the school is closed so you have to provide your meals by yourself.  But it is easy as near the school is a hypermarket with two big grocery stores providing wide range of groceries. Also the dormitory has its own kitchen where you can prepare the kind of food you like. 

Free coffee or tea at coffee breaks

Your course fee includes also free coffee on school’s coffee breaks. Normally the students have two coffee breaks a day; in the morning and in the afternoon.  

At weekends and holidays you have to provide the coffee or tea by yourself. In the dormitory there is a coffee maker for your use so you only have to provide the filter paper and coffee powder  

Group pick-up from Helsinki-Vantaa airport on arrival day  When you arrive to Finland we will pick you up from Helsinki‐Vantaa airport to Mikkeli.  Please notice that we will not pick single student, the minimum amount of group is 7 students. That’s why you should book the air tickets with other selected students for the same day if possible.  

What doesn’t the course fee include?

    Studying materials    Meals on weekends and holidays    Travelling costs, except pick‐up on arrival day from Helsinki‐Vantaa   airport (only group pick‐up)
