SCORERS - EYE PROTECTION EDUCATION Scoring the game of cricket in an accurate way is not only important for clubs and leagues to determine tables and averages, scorers are almost always relied on to provide detail on a individuals performance with the bat, figures with the ball or to clarify the number of balls bowled in an over by umpires.

The ECB ACO tell us that there are 800 registered scorers, as well as the many other hundreds that operate on a more casual basis for clubs, schools and universities up and down the country.

WHY YOU SHOULD PROTECT YOUR EYES AND THE EFFECTS OF THE SUN?The important thing to note is that scorers are active well before the first ball of the game is delivered, to well after the final delivery has been bowled, with the potential of up to 7 hours exposure to the sun during a match.

This includes times during peak period for Ultra Violet (UV) radiation between 10am to 4pm, which means that your risks of exposure to (UV) radiation is considered to be high.

Studies have shown that by the age of 60, you will have been exposed to 90% of your lifetime UV damage which can sometimes result in UV related conditions such as, Cataracts and Age-related Macular degeneration (AMD). In severe cases this can result in cancer of the eye, eyelid and surrounding area.

All three of these conditions can cause loss of vision and therefore the ability to be able to contribute to the game.

It is important to know that UV rays aren’t only present when it is sunny, they are present all year round in both strong and low sunlight, additionally as a scorer you could be in direct sunlight, in a score-box or under a parasol, UV rays will still reach your eyes in all these environments.

Therefore as a scorer it is crucial you keep your eyes protected during all weather conditions and in all environments when scoring the game.

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO PREVENT THE HARMFUL EFFECTS OF THE SUN?We all regularly apply sun tan lotion to our skin to protect from burning when going out in the sun, the same should apply to how we protect our eyes, the simple solution is to wear sunglasses which offer the protection you need to avoid damage to the eyes.

The ECB ACO tell us that currently, the average age of a scorer is 57 years old, so many scorers could require prescription sunglasses which will not only offer protection from the sun but will also allow normal vision in all light conditions.
