School lunch? Problem solved!

By Terry KUKard

WhAT the heck am I going to make the kids for school lunch? Your dilemma is solved!

Jackie Venter from Leach Pharmacy has come up with a novel idea to provide you with a healthy, bal-anced, tasty and affordable alternative to your prob-lem. On a daily (school) basis, Jackie will deliver a lunch to your child’s school that has a variety of healthy and delicious treats. Each day is a different menu with the emphasis being on fresh fruit and veg-gies disguised to ensure that your special little person gobbles it up with glee.

“The idea came to me a few months ago when I re-alized that the sandwiches that I was making for my pre-schooler came back on a daily basis. he had de-cided that he doesn’t eat bread, so what I was making was a total waste of time and money. To crown it all, my kid was going hungry!” said Jackie.

For the pre-school kids, each participating child gets two soft cooler bags (lunch boxes) with their name written on it. A lunch box is delivered to the pre-school every day and the used one from the pre-vious day is collected. For the older kids, a paper

packet containing their lunch and with their name written on it is delivered to the school office for col-lection each day.

None of the food is deep fried or cooked in any oil at all, the menu is as follows:

Monday – 1 x mini pizza, 4 x veggi donuts, 4 x cheese grillers, 2x fruit.

Tuesday – 1 x chicken burger, 4 x cheese and bacon donuts, 1 x yoghurt, 2 x fruit.

Wednesday – 2 x fish cakes, 4 x veggi donuts, 2 x 50g hashbrowns, 2 x fruit.

Thursday – 1 x bacon and cheese rooster brood, 4 x cheese grillers, 1 x yoghurt, 2 x fruit.

Friday – 2 x muffin sweet potatoes, 1 x savoury pan-cake, 1 x yoghurt, 2 x fruit.

If your child has a particular dislike, Jackie is pre-pared (within reason) to adapt the menu to your child’s specific needs. At the very reasonable cost of R20.00 per meal, this is a great opportunity for busy moms and dads to ensure that their child is well fed, not eating ‘junk’ or going hungry without it becoming a monotonous routine every morning.

For further information contact Jackie on: 084 677 0191.

Do You Really Want A Large Dog?SPCA COLUMN SPONSORED By BUCO

EVERY year, thousands of individu-als and families bring home a mem-ber of a large dog breed, only to discover in a short time that it is not the right fit for their home and life-style. Most of these unwanted dogs eventually end up at the SPCA.

Of course this sudden realization is understandable - why would most people want a canine that reaches 100 pounds and is taller than the children? however, it was not a re-sponsible decision in the first place to buy a large breed of dog without doing the research needed to ensure it was a perfect match for you and the family.

Beware Of That Adorable “Little” Puppy

Too many people see that oh-so-cute pup in the store or walking around the neighbor’s yard, and are suddenly drawn to have one. Why? Cute ears, puppy breath, that harm-less wobbly walk – but you know what - all puppies are cute!

Let’s take some breeds for ex-ample that have characteristics that many people are not privy do when purchasing: A beagle is one of the cutest puppies there is, but most likely will run away most of the time without lots of training. A Labrador is cute and will be big, but due to its genetic makeup must have a large outside area to explore and run when it is older. It is a tracking and scenting dog.

It’s All In The Genes, So Take Time To Read Up On The Breed

Big dogs all have unique “big

dog personalities” and somehow they must blend with you and your home. There must be a fit. They can put a huge demand on you and your home if the family is unprepared to handle it.

The characteristics bred into ca-nines by humans will determine if a big dog can be a good companion in your situation. The expenses are often greater, if not only in food, and you must be committed to caring for them. Big dogs are also hard to find new homes for once they are older so if you change your mind then it will be the poor animal that suffers down the road.

Once You Have Decided A Big Dog Is Right For You

So you want to have a dog in your life, have done all the research you

can on the breed, understand its size potential as well as its needs for living and care.

You have also been honest with yourself and determined why you want a big dog and that you have the proper environment set up. You are well funded enough to do so and you just don’t want a compact mini model dog – you must have a big one!

Now all you have to do is decide want length fur you want and what breed is most suitable for you and your family. When you bring the new pup home make certain you train and socialize the big guy well. And above all, enjoy your big dog!

Talk to your friendly SPCA staff and visit the kennels before you make a decision. Email us at [email protected] or call us on 046 624-1919.

hOSPICE is extremely grateful to have had the support of the NSRI at its 2013 Spar Kowie River Mile. What made the NSRI contribution to both 2012 (inaugural) event and the 2nd event last year so special, was that NSRI not only played a vital role in ensuring the safety of the swimmers but actually got involved by assisting the organisers with the starts of all five events and by keeping in regular contact with all of the officials, for example informing and advising whether the swimmers left the water early etc. They played an integral part in the proceedings! Juan Pretorius and the NSRI team are a phenom-enal group of people of whom Port Alfred is exceptionally proud.

hospice decided to use some of the funds sponsored by Spar to donate an amount of R2500.00 to the NSRI in appreciation of their support. Karen Long, chief organiser of the event said: “The Kowie River Mile will grow exponentially each year and with that comes increased funds raised. hospice undertakes to continue donating money to the NSRI each year and as our funds increase, so will our donation. What is unique about this is demonstrating how a charity can also give back to those incredible people who keep our commu-nity safe on the river and in the sea.”

Hospice pays it forward

Karen Long (Hospice fundraiser), Juan Pretorius (Station Com-mander NSRI) and Zelda Elliott (Hospice Manager) took the time exceptional effort to clamber aboard one of the NSRI boats to pose for this photograph.

“You should pray for a healthy mind in a healthy body.Ask for a stout heart that has no fear of death, and deems length of days the least of Na-ture’s giftsthat can endure any kind of toil, that knows neither wrath nor desire and thinksthe woes and hard labours of Hercules better thanthe loves and banquets and downy cushions of Sardanapalus. What I commend to you, you can give to yourself; For assuredly, the only road to a life of peace is virtue.”10th Satire of Juvenal

When I was a child way back in the sixties, a relative of mine had, what was referred to in whispered tones by the family, a “nervous breakdown”. She disappeared off into a men-tal hospital somewhere and came out a month or six later all jittery, constantly wringing her hands and unable to look anyone in the eye. no-body spoke about it and I think the family pretty much avoided the poor relative from then on!

Although many more people make use of the services of psychologists nowadays than was done in the past, there is still a great deal of stig-ma and misinformation about “going to a psy-chologist”. Whilst it is true that certain psychol-ogists are trained to deal with mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, psy-chosis etc., the majority of psychologists in pri-vate practice deal with ordinary people who are experiencing problems of daily living – prob-lems which could happen to anyone at any given time. examples of these include stress, anxiety, trauma, bereavement, relationship conflict, work conflict, burnout, substance abuse etc. I doubt very much that there is anyone who can truthfully say that they have never experienced any of these problems and, whilst most people are able to deal with such problems on their own, there are times when they are unable to cope and the problem becomes overwhelming. Some turn to unhelpful measures, such as alco-hol, food or even spending to try to numb away the problem…and then find that they now have TWO problems to deal with!

Just as it is wise to be proactive in terms of our physical health, we also need to be proactive about our mental health. If we have a pain or a lump or bump somewhere, we would go to the doctor or clinic to get it checked out and treat-ed. And if our mental or emotional problem is affecting us in a way that stops us from func-tioning as we would like to, we would do well to book an appointment with a qualified, regis-tered psychologist or social worker. This does not mean that we have “lost it”, are “going round the bend” or are “weak”! On the contrary, it is the healthy thing to do and, since opening up to a complete stranger about “all your stuff” can be quite daunting, it often takes a lot of courage to make that appointment.

As mentioned before, some psychologists are trained to deal with mental illnesses – these are called Clinical Psychologists. Those who are trained to deal with the problems of everyday living are called Counselling Psychologists. The academic training of a Clinical and a Counsel-ling psychologist is basically the same, but Clinical psychologists would generally do their internships in a psychiatric institution, such as a psychiatric hospital, whilst Counselling psy-chologists would do their internship in a com-munity setting such as a school, hospice, or Counselling Centre. Whether Clinical or Coun-selling, a qualified, psychologist should listen to you with empathy, warmth and non-judgement. So if you are struggling with a particular prob-lem, don’t let lack of knowledge or fear of what others might say keep you from getting the help you need.Counselling Psychologist

Ndlambe young guns vie to become next go-kart star

Jarryd PaULS

A group of excited 9 to 10 year-old learners from around Ndlambe were given their chance behind the wheel of a go-kart outside the Port Alfred Civic Centre, last Saturday. The event served as a trial in which the learner who showed the most promise was afforded the op-portunity to join the Border Go-Kart Club and race for the club this season. The lucky learner will also be given the opportunity to compete in the Ndlambe Go-Kart Challenge later this year.

Applications were open to 18 different schools in the Ndlambe district. Each school was given a list of certain criteria that the ap-plicants should meet and was allowed to submit two names. Mr Mluleki Ncapayi form Ndlambe municipality was involved in the criteria for this selection process. Brendan Kelly, a former For-mula One Powerboat racer, will train the chosen youngster. his son, Cameron (13), has been rac-ing go-karts since the age of four.

“Today was about having a look to find a po-tential driver. It is important to gauge how well the drivers know their left from right,” said Kelly.

“The kart was detuned today to allow every-one to get used to it, but next weekend the cho-sen racer will compete in the first round of the Border Championship,” he added.

Kelly hopes that with the help of his son, who will act as a mentor, they will be able to get the racer onto the national circuit after only one season on the regional circuit. however, this will require a few months of regular, fairly intensive training.

Darryl Kukard, the race organiser, extended his thanks to the Ndlambe Municipality for al-lowing the parking lot of the Civic Centre to be used for the trials on such short notice, as well as to the Traffic Department for its assistance. he also expressed his gratitude to the schools

And the winner of the development driver selection is ………Sibongakonke Mbolekwa from Bathurst Primary School.

which entered participants. Kart racing has become something of a stepping-stone for all

drivers who aspire to compete at the top levels of the most presti-gious motorsports. Leeroy Poulter, who raced in this year’s Dakar Rally, is just one of many who have used go-karting as a spring-board to greater things.

With preparations in full swing and excitement building for the Ndlambe Go-Kart Challenge in October later this year, 2014 contin-ues to be a ground-breaking year for sport on the Sunshine Coast.

Any businesses wishing to become involved in the sponsorship of this event can contact Darryl Kukard on 082 428 4558.

SUNShINE Coast hospice are thrilled to once again host the King-swood College Concert Band on Sun-day 30 March from 12h30 – 14h30 at 43 Air School. Tickets are avail-able at Leach Pharmacy or Sunshine Coast hospice No. 1 Alfred Rd. Bring along your picnic basket, chairs and refreshments and enjoy what promises to be a very special perfor-mance! The Concert Band lost fif-teen of its oldest members last year that’s almost half the membership. But we rallied.

Five players from the Junior School joined the Band: Naomi Bo-swell (first clarinet), Lucia Opper-man (third clarinet), Kuhle Gonshi (bass clarinet), Peter-John hamilton (third trumpet) and Danielle Gri-esel (second flute). It is difficult for

juniors to play in the Concert Band as the rehearsal times clash with Junior School activities. Despite this obstacle, the players made the best of it and contributed positively to the Band.

At the annual Grahamstown hos-pice Concert last year, the band raised R12 500 the most funds raised by the band to date. On tour to the South Western Cape we gave four concerts, all in aid of commu-nity projects. Emma haines (who sang with the Jazz Band) generously agreed to join us on tour. her singing was a great success. We joined in the annual St Andrew’s College and DSG Music Festival. The Concert Band was invited to play at a Wyvern luncheon for the President’s Award 30-year Celebration in October, at-

tended by its patron, Prince Edward. The Eastern Cape Youth Orches-

tral Experience in Port Elizabeth (Oct 2013) has involved eighteen Concert Band members this year, our biggest group yet. (musicians have to audition and if accepted are chosen for the Eastern Cape Youth Orchestra and the Eastern Cape Wind Band, so 18 Kingswood mem-bers is not bad!)

David Jones (violin) performed for the SANYO Concert Orchestra at the 2013 National Arts Festival. Da-vid is the bass guitarist in the Con-cert Band. he was awarded Music honours in October 2013.

The band will also perform in Grahamstown on the 04 April. Con-tact Karen Long 046 624 4107 for further details.

croQueT cornerAs we have so many new and in-teresting developments happen-ing at the Croquet Section of the Port Alfred Bowling and Croquet Club, it seemed a good time to delve into history. The original Port Alfred Croquet Club was part of the Kowie Sports Club, which played on the old Hospital grounds. They became affiliated to SACA on 1 July 1989. In a letter to the chairman, Mrs Meryl Abbott, SACA agreed to waive the annual affiliation of R10 plus R2.00 per member levies for three years, to enable the Club to ‘build up mem-bership & resources’! In January 1991, however, the croquet lawns were to be demolished, due to the access double carriage road, being

built to the new Kowie Hospital. Frank Copeland, the current chair-man of the Croquet Club, wrote to Tom Michie, chairman of the Port Alfred Bowling Club, to see if they could accommodate them.Tom, suggested a meeting of the two clubs to discuss the situation on 26 February 1991. Tom, Rus-sell Geard & Iain Tee (Secretary) met with Frank, Arthur & Hazel Hawkin and it was agreed that, ‘D’ Lawn, at the Port Alfred Bowl-ing Club, would be available for croquet. They would pay the same subscription and green fees as laid down at the time to the Bowling Club. The croquet members would enjoy the full privileges of the Club and the greens would be main-

tained by the Club Green Keeper. Eight members played their first croquet game on the 2nd of March 1991. So we’ve actually just turned 23 years old!! PACC had 10 mem-bers in all - Jill & Allan Wilson, Joey Shield, the Hawkins, Meryl Abbott, Malcolm Monroe, the Werneckes, Wyn Lofsted & Mollie Wessels. At that time only Association Cro-quet was played! More next time! How super to have had few Cro-queteers at the monthly Ladies Birthday Lunch. There were 14 of us in all at Wharf Street Brew Pub. PS Don’t forget Birthday Night on Tuesday 11 February after play. Bring a plate of eats to share, un-less you are celebrating your birth-day in March!!

Bugs & butterflies and their role in our fragile ecologyCOME listen to a farmer from Bedford (huntly Glen is the historic home of the family of Thomas Pringle, leader of the 1820 Scottish Settler Party, and 5th gen-eration Ernest Pringle) who will enthral and intro-duce us to the fascinating lives of insects, butterflies, moths and incredible plant life.

Ernest Pringle has studied the lives and habitats of all of these for many years and is recognised as one of South Africa’s foremost experts in their often unseen and unknown worlds.

he has assembled the largest collection of indig-enous butterflies and moths in South Africa and of great importance to lepidopterists.

he also has South Africa’s largest collection of birds’ eggs and lithops. Lithops, for those who don’t know, are also known as stone plants or pebble plants because they uncannily resemble pebbles which is in fact their prime defence against being eaten. In their natural environment of a stony soil they do sometimes blend in so well as to be difficult to notice. Lithops are indigenous to southern Africa and are a genus of the family Aizoaeceae, or ice plant. Typically, one species

of Lithops will be found in one small location. About a thousand

populations have been identified.

And so, even if you are scared of creepy crawlies, please come along. No live ones will be present and the talk will be riveting.

SA National rock & Surf ChampionshipsSTaff rePOrTer

U16 & U21 SA National Rock & Surf Championships were held in Jeffrey’s Bay from 11 to 13th February 2014. Nine provincial teams of 6 anglers participated in the Championships. Both EP teams won Gold respectively of which Brendan Marais Captained the U21 team.

Amongst others, Brendan’s main catches during the Champion-ships were:

• Ragged Tooth of 76kg• Duckbill Ray of 54kgBrendan finished in 3rd position overall in SA and was selected

to represent the Protea (Springbok) Team to fish against Namibia later this year. Only 6 anglers are chosen to represent SA at an International Event. The selection process is determined by the in-dividual performance at the Annual National Championships over a 3 year period. Brendan finished in 4th position at the National Championships held last year in Natal.

Prior to this event Brendan was lying in first position in the U21 division of EP Rock & Surf and 10th position in SA. Brendan is an active member of the Port Alfred River & Ski Boat Club.

Andrew du Toit represented EP in the same U21 National Cham-pionships. Scott Knight was a reserve for the U16 team at this event

Deon Marais will be accompanying the EP A Team who will be fishing in their National Championships in Struisbaai from 24th to 28th February. Deon Marais will be coaching the team.

Niel van der Linde is the captain of the Eastern Province A team.Port Alfred's Brendan Marais one of only six South Africans cho-sen to represent South Africa against Namibia later this year, seen here with a Ragged Tooth of 76kg which he caught during the U21 SA National Rock & Surf Championships.

Port Alfred High School Swimming GalasPAhS recently held their Championship Gala sponsored by First National Bank. The Intermediate Splash Gala was a lot of fun despite the inclement conditions. Some parents even stuck it out in the rain for the whole gala! The boys and girls didn’t notice a thing and went for it like a herd of

ticklish turtles! One girls couldn’t swim but was dying to, so Mrs Pearson granted her, her wish and got her across the pool.

The Senior Inter house Gala was well supported and again, the weather damp-ened spirits as far as fancy dress was con-cerned but there was no lack of enthusi-asm. For the record, hobson romped away with the overall result, leaving Orffer in second and harvey a distant third.

Lots of participation and a special con-gratulations to Jacque Labuschagne who set a new record in the 25m freestyle event for Under 7’s. Names which I no-ticed putting in good times were Kaine heny, Jemma Booysen, Lisa van der Berg, Tiaan Labuschagne, Luke Lemmer, Lile Potgieter. Kyle Lax showed that he has what it takes and Cameron Reeder proved that surfers can do it in the pool too.

Cricket: PAhS 1sts played Westering 2nds at home last weekend and batting first, we totaled 145 runs all out. Kurt Nelson made 37 and Shilo Funde 38. Westering battled against our bowling attack and were all out for 111. (What is it about Nelsons?) Kurt Nelson was the Man of the Match as he followed up his batting per-formance with bowling figures of 4 wickets for 15 runs off 8 overs.

Swimming: Great news is that two of our junior school swim-mers have qualified at Level 1 as a result of their successes re-cently. Tiann Labuschagne and Luke Lemmer continue to make waves in the water.

Athletics: PAhS Juniors trav-elled up to GOG (Good Old Gra-hamstown) to

take part in the Ndlambe Field events. They came away with no fewer than five 1st places: D Shone (X2), N Pea-cock, E Msesiwe and R Linforth. There were three 2nd places: K Waters, B Burger, R Elliott and E Msesiwe. C Njavana, L Knott and A Swaartz all achieved

3rds. At the Cacadu trials held in Port Elizabeth recently, Dominique Shone had a terrific day with a 4th in Long Jump, a 3rd in Shot Put and a 1st in high Jump.

In the Senior School, no fewer than 10 of our athletes were se-lected for the Ndlambe Athlet-ics Squad, to attend the Cacadu Trials. This after they achieved no fewer than seven 1st plac-es: L Dingela, L Ndike (X2), A Runeli, L Chipumuro (X2) and Q Mali. Taylor du Plessis took two 2nds and Sharne Keeton a 3rd and a 4th. L Dingela, S Ndike, A Runeli, L Chipumuro, Q Mali, T du Plessis, S Solz, A Quma, T Ngesi and D Mpuku are the 10 Ndlambe representatives.

Tennis: PAhS U15 girls trav-elled to GOG to play DSG U15 B and C’s. DSG won by 49 games to 39. Our Juniors took on Shaw Park at home and won by 47 games to 25. Angling: Duke Lee and his team of fishermen from the Ski Boat Club klapped a win over teams from Port Elizabeth, St Francis Bay and Cannon Rocks in the Eastern Province League.
