2016/2017 ANNUAL REPORT 5

There’s little doubt that when it comes to writing an annual report it certainly gives you a great opportunity to reflect on the many wonderful achievements of this amazing club and its members over the past season. Once again the “little club that could” continued to punch well above its weight on every front with our Lifesaving, Surf Sports and Junior Activities sections collecting numerous accolades to ensure Sunshine Beach’s status as one of Queensland’s leading surf lifesaving clubs. The club claimed an unprecedented six awards at the Branch Excellence in Lifesaving Event 2016, taking out Club Captain of Year - Scott Summers, Surf Sports Coach of the Year - Jo Redwood, Rookie Surf Sports Coach of the Year - Brock Redwood, Team Manager of the Year - Craig Law, and the Aggregate Best Surf Sports Club Award, along with our highest ever placing in the prestigious Buhk-Wilkes Trophy with a third place finish overall. At the Branch AGM 2016, a very special personal honour was bestowed upon one of lifesavings most dedicated members with Bill Twigger receiving a Life Membership of the Sunshine Coast Branch. This is a tremendous acknowledgement of Bill’s dedication to both club and branch activities over many years. While at the State Excellence Awards Dinner 2016, Brock Redwood took out the “Qld Rookie Surf Sports Coach of the Year” Award to cap off a wonderful achievement for such an outstanding young man who was also this season selected as the Pool Rescue Coach for both the Sunshine Coast and Qld Cyclones Representative Teams. On the club front, this season was certainly one of great change across many of our committees with a number of new members joining the Executive, Junior Activities or Surf Sports ranks. And while many of our new members lacked previous committee experience all excelled above and beyond my expectations with their dedication, passion and enthusiasm to the respective portfolios that each undertook. And through these new members came fresh ideas, new policies and procedures that will see our club’s long term sustainability maintained well into the future. To my fellow Board Directors, Deputy President - Bryan O’Connor, Administration - Michelle Smallman, Finance - Yvette McKinley, Lifesaving - Scott Summers, Junior Activities - Heather Mackay, Surf Sports - Dan Moore and Peter Nolan, Youth and Cadet - Jarrad Greentree

PRESIDENT – Craig Law

and Brooke Finney my personal heartfelt thanks for your sterling efforts over this past season. Your support of me and the commitment to your roles was second to none. Only a few of us can truly understand the amount of hard work that goes on behind the scenes to ensure the smooth running of a club, and I have no hesitation in saying that each of you dedicated countless hours to guarantee yet another successful season for our club. Thank you to our Lifesaving staff, Administrator Terri Atkin, Sponsorship Manager Dave Gleeson and Finance Officer Deb Scotney for the continued support of our Board and its members yet again. Your commitment and hard work is greatly appreciated and valued by all concerned. Congratulations and well done once again to our Supporters Club Committee of President - Warick Redwood, Deputy President - Johnny Gooderham, Finance - Peter Brewer, Administration - Jane Peeters and Active on Committee - Kim Grove who continue to provide outstanding guidance and support of our award winning Club Manager Tim Johnson, Chef Darren Sandilands and their very dedicated staff who were recently inducted into the Club’s Qld “Hall of Fame” following it’s treble “Best Club of the Year” Awards. Our Lifesaving department under the leadership of Director Scott Summers, continues to perform above all expectations with our Active Membership reaching the highest ever number of patrolling members at 203. I must also acknowledge the efforts of Chief Training Officer Natalie McMaster and First Aid Officer Jane Fraser whose commitment and dedication to training has ensured our ability to achieve these record numbers within the patrolling ranks. My thanks also to officers Andrew Fraser and Jamie Gordon, and our Patrol Captains and Active Members for ensuring yet again that the “zero preventable deaths between the flags” mantra remains steadfast on Sunshine Beach. The continued growth in active members, upgrades, training qualifications and the integration of our young nippers into the patrolling ranks places our club in tremendous shape for the future, and I thank each of you who have contributed in some small way from Age Managers and Water Safety to our Trainers and Assessors for your passion and commitment to the Lifesaving section.

2016/2017 ANNUAL REPORT 6

PRESIDENT REPORT Cont.

It seems that every year something special happens in the Surf Sports world, and this season once again certainly delivered. Thank you to Director Dan Moore for your efforts once again, and his trusty sidekick Peter Nolan who assisted with the Surf Sports portfolio towards the back end of the season. My thanks to Pauline Gleeson who took on the lion’s share of surf sports administrative duties which assisted greatly throughout the season also. The appointment of our first ever full-time Head Coach certainly proved a successful one, with Clint Robinson leading an outstanding coaching team of Kerri Thomas, Ryan Paroz, Alex Austin, Jo Redwood and Pauline Gleeson who’ve all been instrumental in ensuring our Surf Sports program is one of the best in the business. “Team Sunshine” again claimed numerous Branch, State and National titles, along with having some twelve members selected in the Sunshine Coast Representative Team. Congratulations to both Ruby Nolan and Nick Sloman who were also selected in the Qld Cyclones Team, and also Olivia Emanuel on her recent selection in the Australian Youth Development Squad. It’s a tremendous honour to be selected to represent either your state or country, and each of these athletes has done both the families and club proud. And finally, those hardworking Team Managers Gun Meskanen, Bryan O’Connor, Peter Nolan, Ron Greentree and Tania Lewis, thank you for your continued efforts throughout another long carnival season. Thank you to our Junior Activities Director Heather Mackay and her hardworking Committee, Age Managers, Water Safety and parent helpers who all ensured that our Nipper program continues to shine. With a greater emphasis on Club Sunday activities and participation this season, the Nipper program shapes as a tremendous nursery for our future patrolling ranks for many seasons to come. I’d also like to make special mention of our Uniform Coordinator Tara Lees for her outstanding work this season with the new club uniform and swimwear range. Tara along with her “partner in crime” Michelle O’Connor worked tirelessly to ensure all of our members were outfitted in the new gear and there’s no doubt that our crew certainly nailed it in the fashion stakes on the beach this season. Of course much of our club’s ability to function is due in large part to the partnerships and relationships we have established and maintain with both our Sponsors

and Sunshine Coast Branch. My personal thanks to all our clubs Sponsors who continue to assist us in our objective to deliver a quality lifesaving service to the local beach going community. Our thanks also to the SLSQ – Sunshine Coast Branch, in particular Branch President John Thorpe, Administrator Tanya Duncan and their respective committees and staff for the support and guidance where required. As volunteers we all dedicate countless hours to the proudest volunteer movement in this great country of ours. In doing so, we often forsake that valuable family time with our loved ones, who continually support our passion for lifesaving. To my very understanding wife Abby, along with my children Jackson, Ash and Nate, thank you once again for affording me the many hours needed to fulfil the multiple Club, Branch and State roles I’ve undertaken this past season. You guys rock! And finally, to all of our Active Members and your very supportive families, thank you from the bottom of my heart once again for your commitment and dedication to our club. It is only through your efforts that we continue to punch well above our weight in all areas of Lifesaving and Surf Sports, which truly makes us the envy of so many other clubs throughout Queensland. UNITY IS STRENGTH!

2016/2017 ANNUAL REPORT 7

With my first year as Deputy President completed, I have been fortunate to be part of a great team that is dedicated to continuing on the success of our predecessors. I have thoroughly enjoyed the group of people I have worked with across all levels that make Sunshine Beach SLSC the great Club it is. I have personally had a huge learning curve and whilst we have seen some changes in personalities and positions within our Club and committees, we still see the hard work on the beach by our volunteers, the awesome results by our competitors and the success of our licenced club continuing to prosper. On the Beach, our patrolling numbers continue to grow as well as the development of the skills of our members. The commitment by our Club Captain, trainers, assessors and patrol captains is nothing less than inspiring and is critical to the future of the Sunshine Beach Surf Lifesaving Club. I have great admiration to the time and effort that all our volunteers put into being patrol members and the massive work behind the scenes that is done by a few quiet achievers to ensure we have the appropriate gear and equipment to perform our duties on the beach week in week out. Scott Summers has pulled together some fantastic individuals and has built up our patrol numbers to ensure that volunteer lifesaving at Sunshine Beach is in a very good place for years to come and that Sunshine Beach continues to be a safe place to swim. I also had the pleasure this year to be more actively involved in the surf sports program as a team manager for the opens team at a number of carnivals. Whilst we only had a small contingent of competitors in this age group, it was again ever present on how much our little club punches so much higher above its weight against those bigger clubs time after time. With the departure of our Head Coach Clint Robinson at the end of the surf sports season, I wanted to take the opportunity of thanking him for bringing a new dimension of training, competiveness and professionalism to our surf sports program and wish him all the best for his future endeavours. At a management committee level, as an active member and a parent I want to highlight and acknowledge the benefits that our Surf Sports program provides to all our competitors. The self-discipline,

DEPUTY PRESIDENT – Bryan O’Connor

commitment, time and effort put in to compete for our Club ensures they will be better lifesavers and valued members of our community well beyond their competitive lives. Finally, I would like to acknowledge President Craig Law who continues to work tirelessly across all aspects of the Club with an unbelievable attitude and a “just get it done” approach. Craig devotes countless hours every week to making sure we have a great place for our members and ensure the standard of volunteer lifesaving at Sunshine Beach is second to none!

2016/2017 ANNUAL REPORT 8

It is with immense pleasure that I present the financial statements of the Sunshine Beach Surf Life Saving Club that are attached in this Annual Report for the year ending 30 April 2017. The 2016/17 season has been another outstanding year for Sunshine Beach Surf Club with our highly valuable patrolling members ensuring that between the flags were fatality free, our surf sports competitors producing sensational results and the club topping last year’s results by producing another record profit. The strong financial position which the Club now finds itself in has been a huge team effort. Congratulations to our club manager Tim Johnson and his team who continue to run a great club. Following the winning of Best Surf Life Saving Supporter’s Club (Small) for Queensland in 2014, 2015 and 2016, Sunshine Beach Surf Club was welcomed into the Hall of Fame in 2017. This is an amazing achievement which is a testament to the strong leadership and the club’s ongoing commitment to excellence. The Actives Board of Directors and the Supporters Committee have continued to adhere to a strong “budget culture”. To the Nippers, Surf Sports, Youth and Cadet and Lifesaving and sub committees well done and thank you for working hard to manage your spending through the season. Thank you to our largest sponsor the Supporter’s Club which has been pivotal in its funding of our actives club. Our sponsorship of course runs beyond the Supporter’s Club and we must also acknowledge and thank the many local businesses that continue to sponsor our club to ensure that we maintain the essential community service of providing a patrolled beach. Financial highlights for the 2016/17 year include:

Net Profit of the Supporter’s Club before donations to the Surf Club increased from $897K in 2015/16 to $962 in 2016/17

Total net cost of funding Surf Club core activities including administration and surf lifesaving activities (the Beach) $200K

Net investment in our future lifesavers (Nippers, Youth and Cadets) $20K (including purchase of new gear and equipment.

Net investment in Surf Sports activities $95K (including specialised coaching, carnival costs)

DIRECTOR OF FINANCE – Yvette McKinley

A special thank you to Lisa Worthington and other club members who have continued to work hard to secure grants and donations for the club. These grants and donations are essential to ensuring we have the best gear and equipment for Lifesaving, Surf Sports and Junior Activities.

Grants and donations received for 2016/17:

Annual Department of Emergency Services Grant $22K

Donation used to purchase a new ATV for beach patrols $19.5K

Queensland Government Department of Community Safety/Surf Life Saving Queensland Sustainability and Extension of Services Grant of $3.5K

Australian Government Beach Safety Grant $5K (First Aid Equipment)

As all members are aware the coming year, 2018, is going to be a huge one for the Club as we undergo a major renovation to transform the club into one being prepared and ready for the future. It is critical that we reinvest in the venue to ensure an adequate and long term source of cash flow to the Surf Club. Obviously budget adherence is crucial in this renovation stage but our strong financial foundation enables us to take this very exciting progression. Personally, I would like to thank my fellow committee members and also thanks to Deborah and Terri for your support, guidance and assistance this year as I have “found my feet” in the role of treasurer. Thanks also to Peter Brewer for sound advice and the ongoing supply of money from Supporters to Actives Club. I look forward to the coming year with great anticipation and excitement in the knowledge that I now know what I am doing!

2016/2017 ANNUAL REPORT 9

Once again Sunshine Beach SLSC has had a fabulous year and we added another 41 members to our family.

As a part of the executive team I would like to extend thanks to our 188 patrolling members and our tireless volunteers across various areas of the club who ensure we continue to deliver strong Surf Lifesaving, Surf Sports, Youth and Cadet, and Junior Activities programmes. I had not completely grasped the hours volunteers contribute to this club until I became involved at board level this season.

They say it takes a village to raise a child; it certainly takes a community to run a surf club. In my first year in this role, I would like to thank our support staff for keeping everything running so smoothly and particularly Terri Atkin for efficiently managing club administration on a daily basis, especially during my transition into the role.

A significant proportion of administration is given to managing communications. In this regard Facebook has become be a popular way to share information. Club activities, training schedules, patrol swaps, carnival information, general news and photos are all shared in Facebook groups. We have also begun posting the Sea Eagle. If you are yet to join one of our closed Facebook groups I would strongly encourage you to do so as it provides easy access to lots of useful information.

For members who do not engage on Facebook we will continue to email a link to the Sea Eagle as published and it can be accessed on our Actives Noticeboard webpage. During the patrol season a hard copy is also available to peruse in a folder in the patrol trailer.

I urge all members to access our website regularly http://www.sunshinebeachslsc.com.au/ It is easy to navigate and well worth taking some time to familiarise yourself with the resources available. The SLSA Members Portal https://portal.sls.com.au is also a very useful resource where you can review your awards, patrol hours/roster and update your personal details. You can also view SLSQ/SLSA news and circulars.

2016/2017 ANNUAL REPORT 10

DIRECTOR OF LIFE SAVING – Scott Summers

Another successful year on our beach with zero lives lost in our local waters. Well done to all for the hours on the sand!

This season we were blessed with some fantastic weather during our busy holiday periods which in turn led to large numbers on our beaches keeping us busy. As you will note in the beach statistics (previous page) our beach population has remained fairly steady with 46,667 visitors recorded this season.

New technology is gradually influencing and improving the way we work on patrols. Statistics were collected electronically for the first time this season via the new LIMSOC system which was well received and made collation of information far more accurate. We also replaced one of our Yamaha ATVs with a new Can-Am Defender. The Can-Am is far better suited to our conditions and who doesn’t love the power steering! During the off season, we will be replacing our other Yamaha with another Can-Am in readiness for the start of next season.

Our biggest challenge this past season was meeting IRB crew and driver requirements and this remains my greatest concern in the coming months. It is a common theme throughout the Sunshine Coast with most other clubs also reporting their concerns to Branch. As most of you know, Craig and I are working in the background to address this issue. We have put a proposal to Branch and State Centre to consider the inclusion of a wave runner as part of our approved Patrol equipment. Watch this space as Craig and I continue to lobby this topic seeking a solution.

During the year many people expressed gratitude to me personally for the work done to keep our club performing as it does. Well I’ll let you in on a secret I have a dedicated team of worker bees committed to keeping the wheels turning smoothly. With that, my personal thanks to the following people: *Chief Training Officer Natalie McMaster for her work coordinating and liaising with Branch to ensure our Lifesavers are professionally trained and competent to wear the Red and Yellow with confidence.

*“Ninja Jane”! Our First Aid officer Jane Fraser ensured that our First Aid equipment was always stocked, serviced and accessible to support our operations. Jane was also involved in every Bronze/SRC course run this season, either as a trainer or an assessor, and she was on the beach for every one of our Skills Maintenance sessions; thank you Jane for your dedication and commitment.

*Our dedicated team of trainers and assessors: Warick Redwood, Bill Twigger, Steven Boyd and Phil Stephens who also assisted with education this season and to Heidi Farquharson-Selby who answered our call to join the team this year. I will forever remember Bill’s comments to a fresh-faced group of IRB trainees “You’re having fun; you just don’t know it yet!”

*Huge thanks to our ATV Officer Andrew Fraser for his dedicated help with our ATVs and Tractor. His knowledge and persistence in making sure our ATVs were so well looked after has been a huge help and ensured that they were kept in a pristine condition throughout the season.

*Jamie Gordon, when he is not lifting heavy things, has been our IRB officer and go to guy for the mundane tasks of taking motors for servicing and the fiddly little jobs that keep our IRBs ship shape during the year, thanks Jamie.

*James Ross; about half way through the season James offered to take over the job of ensuring we always have the fuel cabinet full and ready to support our IRB and ATV pit stops. I look forward to next season with James taking on the role of Deputy Director of Life Saving. His support might just save my sanity.

*Our Club Administrator Terri Atkin is the worker behind my stupid ideas. She has a great deal of patience and provides me with feedback and guidance when needed and always helps with a smile. Thanks Terri for your support and commitment to this great club.

*And finally, the Patrol Captains; you are the muscles that hold together the backbone of lifesaving at the Club, providing the mentoring, command, control and incident management at the sharp end of the stick. Thanks to you all for your commitment to ensure that our waters remain safe for our bathing public.

The future, next year will certainly bring some big challenges for our club and us as Life Savers when the refurbishment commences, we need to remain focused and remember our number one task is to patrol the beach, as hurdles present we will tackle them and hopefully ensure a smooth transition from the club as we know it now to the best facility on the coast.

I intend to run as your Director of Lifesaving again next season and with your continued support I truly feel that we are and always will be the “best little club that could”.

2016/2017 ANNUAL REPORT 16

Well, as we see another year come to an end I see a season of ‘firsts’ finishing! First female chairperson of the Junior Activities Committee and, I imagine, the first time for a JAC who has never been on a committee before. A first for our new coaching structure and while it was probably not the first time Max didn’t coach at the Club it is the first time that I can remember! It was a first for our U7s being managed by cadets, a first for our new awards presentation structure, and our first nipper Grand finale day. Some of these firsts were a success and some of them not so much, but as the JAC I am proud to have been a part of this year of ‘firsts’. If it weren’t for ‘the first times’ then we would never experience new things and we would not be able to critically and knowledgably assess situations to enable us to make informed decisions going forward. Thank you to the committee for having faith in my ability to do the job and thanks for enabling me to do it without any major blunders! Huge thanks to all the people who helped to make the season such a success; Nippers could not have functioned without you. Sign on day was a success, resulting in 165 Nippers for the season. A good number of these Nippers are in the younger age groups so we look forward to a strong Nipper base for the coming years. We also streamlined our proficiency process which meant the majority of our Nippers were proficient for our first Club Sunday and our first carnival, with minimum stress. The loss of our Activities Coordinator as the season began led to us being a bit slow in this field to start with but Sophie Olver came on board and things quickly changed for the better. The importance of having major positions filled before the new season begins cannot be overemphasised.

DIRECTOR OF JUNIOR ACTIVITIES – Heather Mackay

The Tin Shake was a successful fundraiser with many new families helping out. I see this continuing to be a stress free fundraiser for the early part of the season and a relatively easy way for new families to become involved. 10 Grand in the Hand was our other major fundraiser as usual, and although we had a late start, it was a success. Having said that, there is always room for improvement and I know we are on to that already. This season we had a few age managers on the committee which I consider to be a huge plus. Junior Activities is all about Club Sundays and having a few people who manage age groups involved in decision making meant for happy nippers. As a result our Sunday activities changed and everyone benefitted. The age managers managed to use the breadth of the beach to ensure that age groups weren’t impeding each other, and of course we made sure there was enough water safety! Sunday mornings were always busy, answering questions, helping out, or just chatting, mostly with the newer parents. This was my favourite part of nippers and an important part of making new members feel welcome and included. It did however lead to a problem. As the U14 age manager, I was too busy to ‘manage them’ and Jim Selby, our other U14 age manager, was also busy as water safety officer, another ‘hands on’ job! I would suggest that the JAC does not take on any other role! I had in mind for our last day of Nippers to be a Grand Finale; an event that the kids would remember and want them coming back for more and our Activities Coordinator did a fantastic job of making this happen! I had a terrific experience as JAC and had the pleasure of working with some very supportive committee members. I wish the next chairperson just as much enjoyment; you will be working with a great team.

2016/2017 ANNUAL REPORT 18

To say the past season has been eventful would be a gross understatement. The season started with the Club announcement of a new Head Coach. Installed into the position was Clint Robinson, whom the season prior, had held the position as Ski Coach. Clint brought with him a wealth of experience at the highest level and a desire and plan to achieve results and create new standards amongst our Club’s competitors. Joining Clint was Kerri Thomas, a champion Iron woman in her competitive days and a person that understands, what it takes to achieve. Alex Austin continued in his role as board and iron coach. As always, Alex was sensational with our younger competitors and an asset to the coaching team. Ryan Paroz took on a more hands on role, especially with the ski sessions and at carnivals. Ryan was an invaluable help to Clint throughout the season. Pauline Gleeson continued to nurture, encourage and above all facilitate our beach competitors to achieve the best results for themselves. Pauline also assisted in cross training and transitions with all competitors. Jo Redwood once again led the Pool Rescue and Surf Rescue Teams to great success. Her dedication to these forms of competition has been second to none over a long period of time. On behalf of the Surf Sports Committee, I would like to thank each of the coaches for their time and efforts over the 2016/17 season. As a result of the dedication, commitment and high standards set by the coaching team our Club achieved some sensational results across all disciplines of Surf Sports and the coaches earned the respect and gratitude of competitors and parents alike. It would be remiss of me at this time not to thank our previous Head Coach, Max Pettigrove. For numerous seasons, at countless training sessions and carnivals, Max was the mainstay of our coaching team. I couldn’t count how many competitors, be it Nippers, Seniors or Masters, that have been effected and influenced in a positive manner by Max. His results over a long period of time have been second to none. So Max, thank you for all your time and efforts over such a long period of time.

DIRECTOR OF SURF SPORTS – Peter Nolan

Speaking of results, the 2016/17 season was certainly

successful one. The Pool rescue squad once again performed extremely well at both Branch and Aussie Titles.

The U8-15’s attended the annual Rainbow Beach carnival season on mass to launch their competition season. The U8-10’s age groups are meant to be non-competitive, however these nippers continue to give their all and do so with a smile on their faces. Their season finished up at Redcliffe with the U8-10 Branch Titles. Huge thanks to Tania Lewis who has taken on the role of Team Manager for this age group and has been an asset to the Surf Sports team. The U11-13’s have continued to grow in strength and were part of the highly successful Junior State team which finished 5th overall in the State. One of my pleasures this season has been to watch these kids continue to grow and improve their skills. A fantastic sense of camaraderie and the ability to push each other along has ensured this age group is a force on both the sand and in the water. Thanks to Ronnie Greentree as Team Manager for the ongoing support within Surf Sports. The U14-15’s age group continues to be floating between the Nippers and Senior competitors when it comes to carnivals. This age group had a very successful season, culminating with medals at the Australian Titles. A bronze to Zac Bromage, two individual silvers for Ruby Nolan and another silver along with Sophie Boulton, Charli McKinley and Charlotte Crowe in the Cameron Relay. Sophie and Flynn Ross also both won silver in their respective Champion Life Saver events at the Aussies. The U14’s often competed alongside the U15’s at the Seniors carnivals, gaining invaluable experience for future years. The U17’s-Opens had a very solid season on both the beach and in the water. Unfortunately, their Australian Titles were cut short, as a result of the aftermath of Cyclone Debbie but not before Nick Sloman took out the gold medal in the U19 surf swim. The remaining competitors looked to be hitting form at exactly the right time prior to the carnival being cut short. Thanks to Melissa Emanuel for taking on the Team Manager role for Aussies.

2016/2017 ANNUAL REPORT 19

DIRECTOR OF SURF SPORTS Cont.

Not to be outdone the U17 Patrol Comp Team consisting of Freya Clare, Alice Tilleard, Jonty Redwood and Tom O’Connor took home the bronze. Thanks to Jo Redwood for guiding and managing this team. The Masters with a small but dedicated group had strong results at all carnivals they attended. Special mention to Tania Lewis and Clare Derrington for their medals at the Australian Titles. Thanks to Gun Meskanen for taking on the Team Manager role for the Masters this season. Within Surf Sports it is very easy to take things seriously and the pressure is often evident amongst competitors, coaches and of course parents. However sometimes in life, things happen that help to put things back into perspective. While holidaying with family and friends in Bali, our Director of Surf Sports Dan Moore experienced one of those moments and it certainly put things in perspective for his loved ones, friends and fellow Clubbies. Whilst doing what he loves, surfing, Dan was attacked by a shark, causing major damage to his right forearm and hand. Thankfully Dan’s son Max was able to paddle back and assist his Dad into shore and further out of harm’s way. On behalf of Surf Sports I would like to wish Dan all the very best with the ongoing rehabilitation. Dan is an integral component within our Surf Sports program. His wealth of experience and his ability to pass his knowledge on to our competitors is priceless. Dan may have stepped down as Director of Surf Sports but his ongoing input within the program and presence on the beach is invaluable.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank all those who have contributed and helped out throughout the season. That includes all the officials and those who assisted with Water Safety at both training and carnivals. Everyone that transported or helped carry tents and other equipment. Tent managers and of course the Age Managers that are so vital to the running of carnivals, our team that coordinated our uniforms, Terri in Admin for all her support, and of course the Executive Committee for their ongoing support of Surf Sports.

Most of all I would like to thank all the athletes for their dedication and hard work. Each of you represents your Club with distinction, regardless of where you finish in your race. We are all very proud of how you conduct yourselves and the sportsmanship that you demonstrate whilst representing Sunshine Beach SLSC. I am very much looking forward to the upcoming season and once again watching our wonderful competitors giving their all. Whether they be U8’s bringing big smiles to their parents, right through to the Masters that still love the sport.

2016/2017 ANNUAL REPORT 28

SPONSORSHIP REPORT – David Gleeson

During the last year the sponsorship revenues of our surf lifesaving club have continued to grow as we continue to adapt our offerings and actively seek out new and increased sponsorships from current contacts and new businesses. Attrition rate has been very low with barely any losses in sponsors or significant sponsorship dollars. With our sponsorship officer only working part time (<10 hours per week) this result has been pleasing and represents a significant increase in total sponsorship value from a couple of years ago. Along with delivering great value and ensuring that our sponsors are well communicated to and kept in the loop with goings on at the club, we have also run several sponsorship events which have helped to build closer relationships and make sponsors feel that they are part of the club family. These events, (golf day, sponsors breakfast, networking meetings, Christmas party) have been well received amongst both the club directors and sponsors and these face to face catch ups help to improve our personal relations with sponsors. In terms of actual funds our sponsorships now represent a total of $120,000 being $88,000 in cash and $32,000 in contra. This is an increase from approximately $65,000 2 years ago. All contra arrangements have been revised and now all contra are used 100% and directly benefit our fundraising efforts (EG: prizes for raffles) – NB: raffle revenue is not included in the above figures. Along with keeping existing sponsors happy, prospecting for new business and coordinating/organising events, our sponsorship officer also ensures that we get good local publicity from local media. Over the 2016/2017 season we had significant coverage in both local papers (Noosa Today and Noosa News) along with support from their associated social media/websites and other local websites and social media. We also received exposure in Sunshine Coast Daily, radio ZINC FM, HOT 91.1FM for our initiatives and events. This ongoing and regular exposure is vital to keeping our brand and reputation strong not only in the surf sports and nippers areas, but also in our core business of volunteer lifesaving. We are pleased to hear that several new members have been recruited simply from reading/seeing information in local media about

our call for volunteers and these new members have become bronze medallion holders and vital members of our lifesaving patrols. Looking forward we have an exciting period in the clubs future coming up which will no doubt present a few short term challenges to the sponsorship area, and with the club closing its doors for several months due to renovations we may see some sponsors decide to put their sponsorship support ‘on hold’ until the renovation is complete. However we will be working to minimise this potential loss by creating value added packages over the next 12-18 months. In summary, the sponsorship situation at the club is currently going well however as always, we welcome new interest so if any club members wish to sponsor our club in any way, or know of any local businesses who may do so, we appreciate your referral!

2016/2017 ANNUAL REPORT 35

The Sunshine Beach Surf Life Saving Supporters Club enjoyed another year of substantial sales growth and outstanding profitability, continuing to deliver high quantities of quality food and beverages of choice with excellent customer service.

Again the club made the journey to the prestigious Clubs Queensland Awards Night and this year was extremely proud to be recognised for sustained excellence and being inducted into the Clubs Queensland “Hall of Fame”, being only the third licensed Surf Club to receive this honour.

The 2016-17 year also saw the formation of a building sub-committee, endorsement by the Life Saving and Supporters Club Boards, with the charter to initiate the renovating or replacing our ageing venue. Their tireless efforts and energy see the club poised (at time of writing) to commence building works in February 2018 that will see a new venue that meets the needs of modern consumers whilst aesthetically appealing with a Sunshine Beach/Noosa “feel”. Our members should be justifiably excited in anticipating a new club to enjoy for years to come.

Bar Sales in 2016-17 increased by a very encouraging 6.7% and the club having only exceeded $2 million (ex gst) in sales for the first time last year, increased that to record $2.141 million sales (ex gst) over the past 12 months.

Similarly our restaurant sales rose by a very satisfying 9.1% from $2.471 million to $2.7 million (ex gst) which is testament to the quality and affordability of the food offered here at Sunshine. The Board take the opportunity to again thank Darren and his team for another year of excellence in preparing and presenting large volumes of meals for eager members and guests.

Market conditions and community perceptions of gaming over the past twelve months have seen some contraction in poker machine revenue for clubs on the Sunshine Coast, however we are pleased to report that net revenue from gaming was a very strong $402,000 in 2016-17. Contributing significantly to our annual profit from fifteen machines in a small gaming room is a strong result.

In the competitive functions/weddings space, our club continues to excel and 2016-17 set new records in functions held at the Club. With thanks to the great work of Deb Court (part year) and Jen Grayson, satisfaction levels remain high which ensures word of mouth referrals continue to drive our high enquiry rate and subsequent bookings.

SUPPORTERS CLUB COMMITTEE REPORT

Total Association net income exceeded $3 million (ex gst) for the second year in succession, enjoying a 2.4% rise on 2015-16 and committee was pleased that through management control measures we saw total expenses actually decrease by 6% against this with salaries and wages controlled to come in at less than the previous financial year.

The logical result of increased income and a strong grip on expenses is increased operating profit, and the Board is pleased to confirm that this is certainly the case in 2016-17. The audited operating profit before depreciation of $1,014,940 compared to last year’s impressive $938,452, gives rise to suggest that our Supporters Club has the same traits as our wonderful surf competitors in “punching above our weight”.

Our recorded Operating profit inclusive of depreciation is $962,503 versus last year’s $897,002

The Supporters Club is very fortunate to have a stable and long serving Board and we are indebted to President Warick Redwood, Secretary Jane Peeters, Treasurer Peter Brewer and Ordinary Member Kim Grove for years of guiding the licensed club, whilst welcoming and thanking first year Vice President Johnny Gooderham for bringing his hospitality and business experience and acumen to the table.

The club and Board also recognise that our staff play a key role in driving and maintaining standards and passes on our thanks to Club Manager Tim Johnson, Functions Managers Deb Court (part year) and Jen Grayson, Operations Manager Craig Spencer and all our staff for their efforts in making Sunshine Beach Surf Club a friendly and memorable place to come for a drink, meal, function or gaming experience.
